So is ChatGPT a benefit or a trouble
8 Some universities have banned it due to the warning that it could cause more students to cheat, especially in exams. 9 Andreas Schleicher, director of education and skills of the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development, for instance, said he welcomes ChatGPT because “it gives people a chance” to concentrate less on tasks that technology can perform equally well.

(22-23高二下·北京昌平·期中)Getting Lost in a Good Book Can Help Keep You Healthy
I’m a novelist and it’s obviously in my interest to encourage people to read. But there’s increasing evidence that reading isn’t just for pleasure, or merely a way of improving literacy skills and factual knowledge. 11
Firstly, reading helps to lengthen attention spans in children and improves their ability to think clearly. 12 It is essential to learn this skill as a small child. The more they do it, the better they get at it.
Also, reading can help people learn to empathize(产生共鸣). A recent study at the University of Michigan found that there had been a 48% decrease in empathy among college students. 13 In a computer game, you might have rescued a princess, but you don’t care about her, you just want to win. But a princess in a book has a past, present and future, she has connections and motivations. We can relate to her. We see the world through her eyes.
As a matter of fact, reading is far from a passive activity. Reading exercises the whole brain. When we read and imagine the landscapes, sounds, smells and tastes described on the page, the various areas of the brain that are used to process these experiences in real life are activated, creating new neural(神经) pathways. 14 This doesn’t happen when we’re watching TV or playing a computer game.
Getting sucked into a good novel appears to be beneficial to our mental health too. 15 Reading not
only avoids feelings of loneliness, it helps us to wind down, de-stress and forget our own problems for a while.
A.Encouraging reading could overcome this.
B.As the old saying goes, “ You’re never alone with a book.”
C.But those who did not enjoy these activities had lots of loss.
D.It might actually be good for our mental and physical health too.
E.When we read a good book, we’re trying to find out its main idea.
F.In other words, our brains model real experiences, just as if we were living them ourselves.
G.Stories have a structure that encourages their brains to think in sequence, to link cause, effect and significance.
(22-23高二下·江苏宿迁·期中)The unpredictable nature of disasters is stressful. 16 Here’s what you should do in specific types of disasters.
Hurricane
When a hurricane is approaching, people in its direct path are often all heading in the opposite direction, which means the traffic on the way out can be extreme. 17 If you don’t have a car, make plans to go with friends or family. What’s more, it’s very important to pay attention to all government warnings before and during a hurricane.
Winter storms
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, winter storms create a higher risk of car accidents and several health conditions such as heart disease. 18 Besides, remember to dress warmly, prepare for power outages (断供期), and keep an eye out for signs of serious health conditions. If you have to risk going out, remember to stay warm. 19
Flood
20 Try to bring some water and food with you. If you live in a one-story home, put mattresses (床垫) on top of a dining room table for extra height in case water rushes inside. But be careful about going inside an attic (阁楼). You may find that you don’t have a way back out.
A.So, if you’re going to leave, leave early.
B.That’s why having an action plan in place is so important.
C.To help minimize your risk, you’re advised to stay indoors.
D.Cover as much skin as you can with hats, warm socks, gloves, etc.
E.During a flood, it’s best to go to a high floor, ideally near a window.
F.You can see if your home has a high flood risk through the flood maps.
G.It’s important to ensure that all family members “know the plan inside and out.”
(22-23高二下·浙江宁波·期中)Tears can ruin make-up, bring conversation to a stop, and give you a runny nose. 21 However, crying is a fact of life, and tears are very useful. Even when you’re not crying, your eyes produce tears. These create a film (薄膜) over the eye’s surface. This film contains a substance that protects your eyes against infection.
Tears reduce stress, but we tend to fight them for all sorts of reasons. “ 22 They’re afraid that once they lose control, they’ll never get it back,” explains psychologist Dorothy Rowe.
Almost any emotion—good or bad, happy or sad—can cause tears. 23 Tears help you when you feel you are ready to explode because of very strong feelings. It may explain why people who are afraid to cry often suffer more heart attacks than people who cry more freely.
When some people become very stressed, however, they can’t cry. They may be feeling shock, anger, fear or grief, but they control the emotion. “Everyone has the need to cry,” says psychotherapist (精神治疗医师) Vera Diamond. 24 They practice crying so that they can get used to expressing emotion.
25 It’s good to hold back tears during a tense business discussion. “But once you are safely behind closed doors, don’t just cry,” Diamond says. She suggests that you act out the whole situation again and be as noisy and angry as you like. It will help you feel better. “And,” she adds, “once your tears have released the stress, you can begin to think of logical ways to deal with the problem.”
Tears are a sign of our ability to feel. You should never be afraid to cry.
A.People worry about showing their emotions.
B.The more you cry, the healthier you will become.
C.Crying is a way that we release built-up emotions.
D.Sometimes patients participate in crying exercises.
E.They can leave you embarrassed and without energy.
F.In certain situation, such as at work, tears are not appropriate.
G.Many people get uncomfortable when others cry in front of them.
(22-23高二下·辽宁大连·期中)Reading is an essential part of my work, and most importantly, it’s my favorite thing to do.
But reading takes time, and most days, I can’t read as much as I’d like. As I was writing Better Than Before, I adopted several new habits to help me get more reading done. 26 .
Quit reading. I’d developed the habit of finishing every book I read, because a “real” reader finishes books. I know I wasn’t alone. According to Goodreads, 38 percent of readers always finish a book. 27 What a
relief! When I let myself abandon a boring book, I have more time to read what I love.
Scan. Especially when reading newspapers, magazines and news on the Internet. 28 Also, even if you spend many hours a day reading, you may feel as though you don’t have any time to read. The habit ensures that low-value reading doesn’t crowd out high-value reading.
29 It’s satisfying to stretch. Try setting aside some time each week to read books that are a bit challenging. I used the habit-formation Strategy of Scheduling to form the habit of doing “Studying Reading” each weekend, to ensure that I make time to read books that I may not glad read.
Try audio-books. Listening to a book can be a way to experience it in a terrific new way, and makes books available in situations where it’s impossible to read—say, when driving. Also, if you’re trying to form a habit, it’s also a great way to use the Strategy of Pairing. If you don’t particularly enjoy going for a daily walk, but want to get that exercise, try pairing your walk with an engaging audio-book. 30 .
A.You’ll find the time will fly.
B.Keep a reading list, and keep it handy.
C.Set aside time to read demanding books.
D.Consider whether these habits might work for you.
E.Certain kinds of materials don’t need to be read carefully.
F.Whenever I hear about a book I want to read, I add it to my library list.
G.However, I’ve adopted the habit of putting down a book as soon as I lose interest.
(22-23高二下·黑龙江哈尔滨·期中)We clearly live in an era with little patience. Entire TV series are available at once on streaming services, and burning questions are solved in seconds via a search engine. This instant satisfaction, undoubtedly, is killing our ability to wait. 31 . Here are some strategies to pick up that magic mix if you weren’t born with it.
Visualize success
There’s no need to set a real situation where you wait in a super long grocery checkout line to test yourself. Simply visualizing it helps a lot. See yourself smiling and breathing as you wait for the line to move. 32 . For example, you could say, “it’s not bad to enjoy this magazine while waiting”. Your mind will start to process the picture as a real experience and help to set you up for future successes.
Slow down
Racing around is not necessarily the only way to get what you want. 33 . Most adults do not feel happy when they’re rushing, and children are even less capable of doing it with a good attitude. Instead of sweating through your routine, turn on some background music you like and move at a normal pace.
34
The ability to let your mind wander, whether daydreaming or actively applying your imagination, is a skill that improves patience. 35 . Take a break and do something that could free your brain from the task that takes tons of energy. This helps you build up your staying power, so next time you might be more patient and more likely to focus on your task.
A.Learn to distract yourself
B.Add some positive words if possible
C.You don’t have to get the task done in one go
D.Therefore, we are getting more and more impatient
E.But sometimes, a fast pace can improve our working efficiency
F.We get so caught up in hurrying that we get stuck in that mode
G.Thus, the loss of this mixed quality of tolerance and calmness is unavoidable
(22-23高二下·山东潍坊·期中)You've come back from your holiday and you feel amazingly recharged. 36 Then, you open your inbox. You have hundreds, if not thousands, of unanswered emails. Suddenly, your calm starts to disappear and your blood pressure starts to rise. Yet, that's no way to start your first day at work after a holiday. Here's what you do to keep your stress to a minimum after a break.
37 Take this time to unpack and do some housework. Do whatever you need to do to wrap up the holiday bits and slowly start getting back into your daily routine. When you do this, you're much more likely to suffer from less stress. You will also feel more prepared going back into work.
As much as possible, limit your meetings and scheduled commitments the first week back. 38 The worst thing you can do is have back-to-back meetings the first few days with little or no time to actually catch up on what you've missed. Keep your calendar as clear as possible and get started on categorizing your unread emails. Split them into categories like urgent, non-urgent, quick responses, and no action needed. 39
Up your fun the week you're back. Go out for a meal with your friends. Walk your favorite route in your neighborhood. Look at the pictures from your holiday. 40 Hence, make a little time for play your first week back-and the weeks that follow. This will help you to feel happy and energized even though your holiday is behind you.
A.This enables you to deal with your overflowing inbox.
B.You've got a spring in your step and a smile on your face.
C.Remember, there will be plenty more holidays in the future.
D.So the first week back at work will be more tiring than usual.
E.Give yourself at least half a day before you jump back into work.
F.Then, start the urgent ones before diving into the quick responses.
G.Post-holiday blues can be very common if you go straight into all work.
(22-23高二下·河北唐山·期中)Sometimes you may be faced with homework stress and doing homework every day even becomes a heavy burden(负担). However, it can be a satisfying experience if well organized. 41
Pick a proper time and workplace. Each student is different. Some students are used to doing their homework right after school, while others prefer to start later after a short rest. Different students work best at different time. 42 A good learning environment will also help you concentrate well, so too comfortable or uncomfortable chairs, strong smell or extreme temperature should be avoided.
43 Figure out how much homework you have to do every day. And list all your homework you have to do in a note book or a day planner. Focus on one task at a time. It’s not a good idea to do several tasks at a time as you can’t concentrate on several things at the same time. Always do the most important thing first, or you will get stressed if you leave it until the last minute.
Set reminders. As you have got a lot of things going on, it’s easy to forget about some tasks. 44 In this way, you can never miss deadlines(最后期限).
Balance your study and life. 45 You need enough time for sleep, well-balanced meals and regular exercise to develop your body and improve your brainpower. Only when you keep a healthy life style can you be more active in your school work.
A.Make a schedule.
B.You are not a machine.
C.Here are some tips to help you.
D.Join a study group.
E.You’d better turn the Wi-Fi off while doing homework.
F.You just find a period of time when you can concentrate well.
G.An alarm clock or a mobile phone to set daily reminders is necessary.

Be honest with yourself
Behind every fancy purchase is a desire for status and recognition. You secretly want to be noticed for wearing a new watch or carrying a designer purse. 51 So before taking action towards any attempt, such as making an expensive purchase or pursuing a job promotion, ask yourself, “Who am I doing this for ” 52 However, if you are pursuing something with the hopes of attracting attention, then you need to say no to yourself.

53 Trying to please everyone makes you vulnerable (脆弱的). The truth is you have limited energy and time. It is important that you are wise with your resources. The importance of honoring your limits is
highlighted by the Greek mythological story. The story is a reminder that pushing yourself too hard for too long ultimately comes at a cost.
Stop comparing yourself to others
People will engage in behaviors that trigger you. It might be tempting to enter an undeclared competition with the Joneses. This approach does not work because there is always someone out there who has more of what you desire.
Stop comparing yourself to others. 54 Focus on living a meaningful life that is consistent with your values and goals.
55
You are likely your worst critic. You secretly say things to yourself that you would never have the heart to tell others. Remember to have realistic expectations of yourself. With pressure and competition rising in education, students nowadays are eager to find the best methods or tools to improve their academic scores. So, questions like “What is the best study method ” or “How can I learn knowledge faster ” arise in their minds. 71 .
Play the role of a teacher
A useful way to remember lessons is to explain them aloud to yourself. Once you learn a study material, try to explain it to yourself or your friends as your teachers explain it to you. This will help you to clear your confusion related to the lesson. 72 . This will not only help the details stick in your mind but help you to be well prepared for your exams.
73
Many students face a challenge like “Why can’t I remember what I’ve studied ”. 74 . A tired brain is a barrier to learning. Exercise before studying helps to lift your mood. In fact, physical activity helps wake you up so you feel ready when you sit down with your books.
Absorb information in smaller chunks (块)

Last but not the least, these tips on how to study effectively can only work if there is enough motivation and willpower to do well. You have to motivate yourself to reach the study goals.
