All of these will influence your shopping experience and make you buy more or something you don’t plan to buy.
The supermarkets want you to spend as much time as possible in the shop. They know that the longer you stay, the more you’ll see and want to buy. How do they do it Once you enter a supermarket, it is not always easy to get out again. Most supermarkets have only one exit (出口). To find the way out, you’re forced to walk past many goods (货物) that are on sale.
Once you’re in the door, the first part you’ll see in most supermarkets is the fruit and vegetable area, which is full of smells and colors that make you hungry. So don’t go shopping when you’re hungry. And music also makes you want to buy more. One study found that people spend 34% longer shopping in shops where music is played.
In most supermarkets, many expensive goods are kept on shelves (架子) at eye level, where they are easily seen and reached. Cheaper goods are placed closer to the floor, so you have to bend down to get them.

(2024·安徽芜湖·一模)Critical thinking(批判性思维)is one of the most important skills that we need to develop. It can help us better understand others’ opinions and also create new possibilities in problem-solving. Then, how can we develop our critical thinking skills
Be open-minded. Critical thinking means being open to new ideas. You may not have considered them before, but some of these ideas may bring surprising results. Being open-minded allows people to find more possible solutions(解决方案)to a problem.
Listen more. Listening is an important part of learning. If we keep talking about our own ideas, how can we learn about anyone else’s Good critical thinkers are interested in others’ ideas. They want to learn more so that they can think differently. They often try to solve problems in different ways.
Focus on yourself. Critical thinking asks a person to look at the world in different ways. Schools in some places pay more attention to critical thinking. For example, younger students are asked how their lives would be different if they were born in another country. Besides, history majors(专业学生)are advised to put themselves in the place of people living in ancient times. This helps them better understand historical events.

(2024·安徽滁州·一模)Are children smarter than adults The answer is “yes” when they learn new things. A new study shows that kids pick up new knowledge and skills faster than adults.
The study was carried out by famous scientists around the world. In the study, some kids and adults learned the same lessons of new information and skills. The children were 8 to 11 years old. And the adults were 18 to 35 years old. The scientists looked at their GABA (Y-氨基丁酸) levels before, during and after these lessons. GABA is a chemical (化学物质) that our brains produce. It helps us remember newly learned information.
According to the study, the GABA levels in the children’s brains increased quickly during the lessons. This increase lasted for several minutes after the lessons were over. In the adults, however, there was no change in their GABA levels during or after the lessons.
The scientists tested their learning. The results found that the children did learn better. They learned more in the same amount of time than the adults.
This study encourages people to give children more chances to learn new skills. It could also be used to help adults learn faster. “We might develop a new technology, for example, to increase the amount of GABA in adults’ brain,” said one of the scientists.

(2024·安徽滁州·一模)Scientists say they have found plastic particles snow in the Arctic (北极地区). The snow isn’t only made of water
German scientists have recently found microplastics (微塑料) in Arctic snow. Microplastics are pieces of plastic that are smaller than 5 millimeters (毫米) in length. They’re found not only in our air, but in our water. They end up in our wastewater when we use washing machines to wash clothes with plastic fibers (塑料纤维). The scientists found 1,800 pieces of microplastics per liter of Arctic snow.
How do microplastics travel so far According to scientists, they fall off plastic objects and are moved by the wind, just like dust. They mix with ice in the air and fall to the ground as snow.
Finding these plastics in Arctic snow means that we may breathe them in our air. There are even more of these plastics in the snow around cities.
Are they bad for us Scientists cannot answer this question for now, according to the World Health Organization. We all know that our bodies can’t take in big pieces of microplastic. But if the plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time. This can be bad for our health.

(2024·安徽滁州·一模)To fight against climate change, scientists have suggested whales as a solution. It turns out that whales are excellent at controlling CO .
Whales remove (清除) CO from the air in two ways. First, they move nutrients (养分) from their eating areas deep in the ocean back to the surface, where they let go of them in their waste. Those nutrients help the growth of plants which take in CO from the air. Second, whales themselves collect CO in their bodies when they eat other animals. The total amount of the gas adds up to about 33 tons over a whale’s lifetime. When whales die, they take all that CO with them down to the ocean floor.
At one time, millions of whales were in the world's oceans. Unluckily, whaling brought many whales to death. Though many whales have been saved nowadays, they still face serious dangers. They are influenced by pollution from chemicals (化学品), noise, and lots of plastics that end up in the oceans.
Whales are important to the future health of our planet. If whale populations increased to what they were before whaling, whales could take in about 1.7 billion tons of CO each pare this to the high costs needed to plant forests, and you will see why whales might be an amazing solution. It might be difficult to realize, but it’s worth fighting for.

(2024·安徽滁州·一模)Year 2023 marks the 20th anniversary (纪念日) of China’s first manned space mission (任务). Since Yang Liwei became the first Chinese astronaut (宇航员) to go to space, another 17 astronauts have reached for the stars. In fact, training an astronaut is very difficult. That’s because the human body doesn’t fit space life. The changes in gravity (重力) can have an influence on astronauts’ bodies. The human body reacts to changes in gravity during space travel by experiencing body changes. Living in a small spacecraft for months is bad for their spirit.
To make sure that Chinese astronauts complete their missions and return to the Earth safely, they will experience eight kinds of training, including over 200 subjects of training. In addition to physical fitness training, it also includes basic scientific knowledge, spirit health and so on.
Among them, the most tiring one is underwater training. It’s made for astronauts to get used to the microgravity environment in space. Nie Haisheng once reported a two-kilogram loss in weight after one underwater training exercise. Each astronaut accepts training for at least three and a half years before having the chance to go to space.

(2024·安徽·一模)Sitting in the garden, Newton watched an apple fall from a tree. He began to wonder if the same force that pulled the apple down also kept the moon-circling the earth. Newton believed it did. He called it “gravity (重力)”.
This story has become one of the most popular examples of “eureka” moments. But when we cheer for the great discovery, the whole process of creative thinking shouldn’t be forgotten.
Newton studied mathematics for long to have a better understanding of the world. He always enjoyed finding new ways to solve problems. The falling apple was only the fruit of years of hard work before. It also started the train of thought that continued for the next twenty years.
Newton began to examine “gravity” carefully. He experimented. Then he studied the results and used what he had learned to do new experiments. In 1687, the greatest scientific work ever written came out.
The whole process of creative thinking works the same in our life. In school, we prepare ourselves for the right moment. (2024·安徽·一模)Green is more than just a color. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment. How to decide whether a product is green Here is what we may keep in mind.
The materials of a product are usually our first focus. Green products are made of more natural materials which are free from harmful chemicals, so they can be good for our physical health.
Packaging is important. We’d better choose glass, metal and paper packaging, as these can be reused or more easily recycled. We can also look for less packaging or even choose unbagged products whenever possible.
Location (地点) matters. Think about how much energy was used to get it. To us, try to choose local products. When it comes to food, it is a good idea to order directly from local farmer, shop at markets and buy fruits in season.
Look into what the company tells us about their product. It’s easy to say that a product is “green” or “all natural”, but the words may be too good to be true. So, much of the information about a product should be taken with a grain of salt.
Better than buying is choosing to leave an unnecessary product in the store. It sends a message to the producer, keeps money in our pockets, reduces waste and keeps the planet healthy.

According to scientists from Duke University, US, our brains degrade (退化) and change over time. This change makes us take in and process (加工) new information more slowly.
Babies, for example, move their eyes much more often than adults because they’re processing images (图像) faster. They take in a lot of information and do many things in a single day. This makes them feel like a single day lasts for a long time.
However, as people’s brains degrade over time, fewer images are processed in the same time. Therefore, older people receive less information during a day than the younger. This causes things to seem as thought they’re happening more quickly.
In addition, people may also “feel” time differently for psychological (心理的) reasons. People may measure time by the number of memorable events that can be recalled within a certain period.

The Spanish town is most famous for its unusual cave (洞穴) houses which are built directly below the rocks of a deep canyon (峡谷). The canyon was formed naturally by the water from the Rio Trejo river below, creating this unbelievable wonder. Many of the town’s people live in their cave houses.
The unusual structures are believed to have been inspired (启发) by the ancient Arabic (阿拉伯的) tradition. There are underground cave houses to fight against the high heat. The Moors (摩尔人) built the town in the 12th century. Rather than building the whole homes, they made natural caves bigger in the canyon and added a few more walls.
The cave houses are inexpensive and keep people inside cool during the hot summer months. They can protect the people inside from the earthquakes and it is impossible to catch fire.
The main street in Setenil de las Bodegas is called Caves of the Sun. This beautiful, sunny street is home to many cave restaurants. It’s like when your friend gives you a pen as you search your pockets, or when a classmate leaves his seat to help you pick up your book as it falls onto the floor. Researchers say these small acts of kindness are common and are found in all cultures.
The study found that people usually agreed to the requests (请求) and were happy to help others they knew. However, it did not focus on kindness between strangers.
Helping others is a general part of human nature. The researchers studied videos of more than 350 people in Australia, Ecuador, Ghana, Italy, Laos, Poland, Russia and the United Kingdom. They tried to answer the question: Does kindness come mainly from different cultural traditions, or does it come from common human action Earlier studies of kindness usually focused on cultural traditions, such as Indonesian whale hunters (捕鲸人) sharing their meat or rich Kenyans paying for village roads. The new study found that people from all cultures are similar in the ways they show kindness. The study showed that cultural differences are less important than people’s general “tendency (倾向) to give help when needed”.

To be honest, I’m not interested in art paintings at all. I know very little about European art. So, at first, I refused to go to the exhibition. But finally I became excited to see the artworks of the famous artists like Monet and Van Gogh. The exhibition included 52 artworks. It was really a different experience to see them face to face.
My friend was happy to see so many different painting styles in one place. The visit made her remember the trip to Paris several years ago. She told me that art could be found in every corner of the city.
Most of the visitors, I thought, had limited (有限的) knowledge about art, too. They were just busy taking pictures, and then showed everyone on WeChat that they had been there. Under the influence of my friend, who is an art lover, I began to look at the paintings carefully. One painting that moved me most was Van Gogh’s Long Grass With Butterflies. Those things such as grass, butterflies were quite common in my life. However, I had never thought they were worth attention. I had usually followed the crowd to see what was “special”. 秋词(刘禹锡) 自古逢秋悲寂寥, 我言秋日胜春朝。 晴空一鹤排云上, 便引诗情到碧霄。 Song of AutumnLiu YuxiSince olden days we feel in autumn sad and drear, But I say spring cannot compete with autumn clear. On a fine day a crane cleaves the clouds and soars high; It leads the poet’s lofty mind to azure sky.
Poems from Tang and Song dynasties, operas from Yuan dynasty, and novels from Ming and Qing dynasties are very famous in China’s history. Today, I’d like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the poems by Liu Yuxi (772-842), a famous poet and writer in the mid Tang dynasty.
Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu’s eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better than spring morning. He describes the bright scene of a crane riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky.
With his poems paying special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of common people, Liu wrote poems with beautiful music-like words. You may feel it in this poem. Though being translated thoughtfully by experienced Xu Yuanchong, the poem still reads not so beautifully as that in Chinese. I personally think that English is sometimes not so powerful as Chinese.
Here is another example, in Liu’s essay An Eulogium on a Humble Cell (《陋室铭》), with less than 100 words, he shows a lively picture of his house. However, it also shows how he was pleased with the poor and simple life. People may find it strange that one can feel happy living in such a simple house. Learning from his famous sentence, “be fragrant because of my virtues” (斯是陋室,惟吾德馨), I think to be a respectable man is more important than to live in big houses, to wear beautiful clothes, to enjoy delicious food, and even to gain knowledge.
85.How was autumn in Liu’s eyes at that time
A.He thought it was a sad time. B.He thought autumn was a hopeful season.
C.He thought spring was better. D.He thought that autumn was rather cloudy.

C.Picturing blue sky and a crane. D.Describing daily life of young people.
87.Influenced by Liu Yuxi, which of the following does the writer think is the most important
A.To be a respectable man. B.To live in a big house.
C.To wear beautiful clothes. D.To gain more knowledge.
(2024·安徽黄山·一模)You can hardly pay no attention to hunger. Hunger has many different causes, according to Dr. Monique Tello, from Harvard Medical School.
The first cause may be medical problems. “If a person always feels hungry and can’t put on weight or even loses weight, he should go to the hospital. For people with Type 1 diabetes (糖尿病), their body isn’t able to process sugar (分解糖). They eat a lot, but still lose weight and they feel terrible.” Tello said.
If it isn’t a medical cause, the problem could be in the head. It’s reasonable to be hungry every three to five hours. However, you are likely to eat often and a lot after watching food advertisements on TV or social media. Also, the more you eat, the larger your stomach gets, and the more you want to eat. A person’s state of mind can play a role, too. Research has shown that stress can increase levels of ghrelin (饥饿激素). Pressure and worry can send people looking into the fridge when they’re not truly hungry.
Another reason may be the lifestyle. Sometimes the reason why a person is always hungry is that he eats too little, exercises too much, or both.
So, what are the solutions First, reduce your time on watching food advertisements on TV and social media. In addition, say no to food if you’re not really hungry. Finally, change your diet by eating more food high in fiber (纤维), protein (蛋白质) and healthy fats.
88.According to Tello, what should you do if you are always hungry and getting thinner

Let’s look at a family caught in the water crisis. It’s possible that they live on less than a dollar a day. When they’re thirsty, they can’t get a glass of cold water at once. Instead, the women and children go off to collect water. Many walk up to three hours a day to the nearest river to collect water.
Time spent collecting water is time they can’t spend learning to read, write, make money or take care of their family. Some women in Africa spend more time collecting water than on any other activity they do in the day. And the journey to get water is dangerous. Many even get hurt. When they make it home, the little water they’ve collected isn’t clean. Some families know their water is polluted, but what choice do they have

But recently, Huawei faced some difficulties. The US government ordered a ban (禁止) on its sales in America. American officials said Huawei gave information that it collected to the Chinese government. At the same time, the US government planned to stop selling parts and services to Huawei, which was believed to hurt Huawei’s business.
“We have never received such a request from the Chinese government and we have never tried to get into other systems to collect information,” Ren Zhengfei, Huangwei’s founder and president said. “The ban from the US would have little effect on our company. Huawei has enough ability to deal with the problems,” Ren added.
In an interview several years ago, Ren Zhengfei said, “I started Huawei with only 20,000 yuan, but now it has become a $100 billion company. The experience was not as romantic as you imagine.”
Facing the ban of the US, Huawei is growing. Huawei’s smartphone sales around the world rose a lot compared to last year. At the same time, sales from both Samsung and Apple fell. (2024·安徽滁州·一模)Do you know what birds use to build their nests (巢) You may say that birds usually build their nests with sticks, leaves or grass. But do you know that birds are also building their nests with rubbish these years The rubbish includes cigarette butts (烟头) and plastic bags.
A group of European scientists looked into about 35, 000 studies on bird nests. They found that birds have used man-made things in nests almost everywhere on Earth. Some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have special smell, so they can keep insects away to protect the baby birds. Plastic bags are useful in keeping the animals warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger.
However, in the end, human rubbish may only bring more harm to birds. The toxic (有毒的) chemicals in cigarettes hurt the baby birds. They may get sick or have shorter lives, according to a study. To make matters worse, if the cigarette still burns when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. Pieces of fishing net (渔网) may also trap birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. If the baby birds eat other kinds of rubbish by accident, they will also get hurt. Our bird friends in the air are feeling the bad effects of humans polluting the environment.
