I remember starting to stare at myself in the mirror when I was 16 years old. Before then, I would spend most of my free time walking and reading outdoors, watching television, or writing. Then, after I turned 16 I became increasingly aware of my appearance, especially my face. I started reading fashion magazines, and comparing my appearance to the models' in the magazines. As a result, I found that my eyes were too small and close together, my nose too large, and my forehead too short. Also, though I was small, my legs looked out of proportion to (与……不成比例) the rest of my body.
Throughout college I was a good student, though I struggled with feelings of low self-confidence and a little depression. After college, I managed an art gallery in Boston and found it extremely stressful being on my own for the first time. I spent hours in the morning and evening staring at my face in the mirror and picking at my skin. At one point, the picking caused a small facial mark. I remember collapsing on a stairway later that day in tears, saddened by the terrible mark I had caused, convinced it would never go away.
Then, one day while waiting in line at a grocery store, a magazine cover caught my attention. On the cover I noticed an article titled “Hate your looks What it means when your mirror lies.” The title caught my attention because my friends and family members had always insisted I looked fine to them, which was opposite to what the mirror told me.
Inside the magazine was an article about body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) ( 身体畸形恐惧症). The article described the symptoms, possible causes, and treatment for it. Also, I was happy to read that those with the disorder are often considered to be quite attractive, even while believing that they are ugly.
That article provided me with the information I needed. As a result, I referred myself for treatment. After being in clinical treatment for two years, my symptoms improved. My anxiety about my ugliness became manageable. I stopped staring at my face in the mirror for hours every day.

27. What did the author do after reading the article
A. She got clinical treatment.

Located in the tropical rainforest of the Petén Basin in northern Guatemala, Tikal was one of the largest cities of the ancient Maya civilization during its Classic Period, which ran from approximately 200 CE to 900 CE. Although Tikal reached its height during the Classic Period, some of the architecture at the site dates back to the fourth century BCE. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, the Mayans abandoned the city around 900 CE. Due to the growth of the jungle, archaeologists did not rediscover it until 1848. The part of the city now excavated (发掘) is quite impressive. Approximately 3,000 sites have been uncovered and nearly 10,000 still need to be uncovered.
At the center is the Great Plaza. In time, other structures were built surrounding the Plaza. These include the North Acropolis and the Central Acropolis. The North Acropolis holds seventy slabs of stone, called stelae, which stand in a double row with altars (祭坛) set in front of them. Some are carved with images of rulers and hieroglyphs (象形文字). The Central Acropolis includes 700 feet of long buildings with many rooms, often called palaces. There are six temple pyramids, with the tallest one standing 65 meters high.
In addition to the towering temples and other unique architectural works, Tikal is well known for the carved inscriptions ( 碑文) and exceptional ceramics ( 陶器) found there. The Mayans engineered reservoir and culvert (排水渠) systems to help with the storage and usage of water. Another innovation used by the Mayans were sacbes, which were raised causeways paved with lime-based cement, connecting Tikal's ceremonial nodes.
Scientists are not sure whether war, disease, famine or some other reason caused the Mayans to leave Tikal. However, they left a part of themselves behind in the ruins. The city and surrounding area is now a protected national park, and visitors are welcome to explore the ruins. Much can be learned through seeing, touching and exploring this ancient city once inhabited by the Mayans.
28. What can we learn about Tikal
A. It was ruined due to war.
B. It has been fully excavated.
C. It reached its height in the fourth century BCE.
D. It is a historic site of the ancient Maya civilization.
29. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Altars. B. Stelae. C. Palaces. D. Temples.
30. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How Tikal was built.
B. The history of Tikal.
C. The cultural objects unearthed at Tikal.
D. Why Tikal was abandoned by the Mayans.
31. What's the current situation of Tikal
A. It is left unprotected.
B. It is a national park now.
C. It is not open to the public now.

In a study of 4,000 people, 56% of women described being unhappy with their physical appearance. Furthermore, 89% wanted to lose weight, and 15% had used weight loss strategies for at least 5 years of their life.
The fact that 89% of women want to lose weight shows how unattainable ( 难以实现的) the measures of feminine ( 女性的) beauty are. For genetic and biological reasons, there are many different kinds of beauty. If we compare ourselves to the impossible measures that only 10% of the population can achieve naturally, we will always be “ugly”. Even models who measure up to the “ideals” of beauty and fashion have also expressed dissatisfaction with their bodies. For example, Irina Shayk said that she feels insecure and ugly.
Women who don't feel beautiful develop a style of passive emotional coping when faced with their image. Conversely (相反), active emotional coping refers to actions taken to gain control of the situation. This coping style involves the psychological activation of our resources to do things such as stress management.
Current studies show that women are less influenced by their body mass index, and more influenced by the image they have of themselves. Therefore, a woman with model features who has a passive coping style when it comes to her body may not feel beautiful. However, a woman with less “popular” features, using an active coping method, may feel more beautiful.
Really, the western beauty standard is detrimental because extreme thinness is the prototype ( 典型) for what women should look like. This beauty ideal, as unattainable as it is extreme, has been internalized by many women. In return, women have experienced negative effects in the way they see themselves.
Negative self-concept influences the manner in which a woman faces her self-image. We develop our self-concept through interactions with others. If, every day, women receive information about how their bodies should look, our self-concept will diminish (降低). This is especially true if we don't try to control our own resources and strengths.
32. Why is Irina Shayk mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. To explain what beauty means.
B. To encourage women to learn from her.
C. To prove that ugly women can be models too.
D. To show some measures of beauty are hard to achieve.
33. What can be inferred from the current studies
A. Confident women may feel more beautiful.
B. A passive coping style can be found in most women.
C. Women pay more attention to their weight than their image.
D. Women with model features are less influenced by their image.
34. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Official. B. Unlimited. C. Achievable. D. Harmful.
35. What plays an important role in developing our self-concept
A. Experience. B. Knowledge. C. Judgment. D. Appearance.

Some businesses are working on technology to determine customer satisfaction through facial expressions. But facial expressions might not be reliable indicators of emotion, research indicates. 36
“Some claim they can detect whether someone is guilty of a crime or not, or whether a student is paying attention in class, or whether a customer is satisfied after buying something,” professor Aleix Martinez said. “What our research showed is that those claims are completely ridiculous. 37 ”
The danger, Martinez said, lies in the possibility of missing the real emotion in another person, and then making decisions about that person's future or abilities. For example, a teacher might expect a student to smile if the student is paying attention. 38 It would be wrong for the teacher to judge that student because of the student's facial expressions.
The research team concluded that it takes more than expressions to correctly detect emotion.
Facial color can help provide clues. “When you experience emotion, your brain gives out hormones (激素) that change the blood flow and the face changes color,” Martinez said.
Context plays a key role as well. In one experiment, Martinez showed participants a picture cropped (被裁剪) to display just a man's face. The man's mouth is open in a scream; his face is bright red. Martinez said, “ 39 But when participants saw the whole image, they saw that it was a soccer player who was celebrating a goal.”
40 “In the U. S., we tend to smile a lot,” Martinez said. “But in other cultures, if you walked around the supermarket smiling at everyone, you might get smacked (掌掴).”
A. And worse, they can be dangerous.
B. Cultural background plays a role, too.
C. Participants think the man is delighted.
D. We can judge another person just by a facial expression.
E. When people looked at it, they would think this man was angry.
F. In fact, it might be more accurate to say we should never trust a person's face.
G. But maybe that student, for some reason, is listening carefully, but not smiling at all.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I have a brother and a sister named Tex and Indi, who are five-year-old twins. One day, Tex was playing with his friend Sammy. They were building a space station out of Legos, and I was sitting nearby, so I could hear their conversation.
“I'm putting a jetpack on this guy,” said Sammy, “so he can fly from the space station to the spaceship.”
“You know, my grandfather invented jetpacks,” said Tex.
“Really ” said Sammy.
Tex nodded, “And, my grandpa lets me use a jetpack whenever we visit him.”
I could hardly believe my ears. I knew that Tex had a great imagination, but I'd never heard him tell a lie before. Then I realized I'd better talk to him privately, so I asked him to meet me in the kitchen.
“Why would you lie to your friend ” I asked.
Tex said, “Sammy always gets to do cool stuff that I wish I could do. I wanted to be the one talking about cool stuff for a change.”
“Well, you should apologize to Sammy,” I said. “And from now on, always tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. OK ”
“OK,” Tex replied.
He went to apologize to Sammy while I patted myself on the back for being the world's best big sister. But it wasn't long before I realized that my helpful advice wasn't actually that helpful.
The next morning, while I was singing along to my favorite song on the radio, Tex popped his head into my room and said, “I don't think your voice sounds very good with that song.”
“Nobody asked your opinion,” I said.
“I was just telling the truth!” said Tex.
That afternoon, Indi ran into the house after her art class and said, “What do you think of the horse I made out of clay ”
“It's ugly,” said Tex.
“That wasn't nice,” said Indi, crying and leaving the room.
“But it's true,” Tex said.
Then, at dinner, our mom said, “I tried a new recipe for buckwheat noodles. It took me forever to make. I hope you like it.”

第一节
One possible version:
Is appearance important
Many people place a high value on appearance, because a physically attractive person can impress people. For example, a good-looking actor or actress can get noticed quickly. Moreover, a good appearance can boost our self-confidence. We feel good if we look good. However, there is a danger of attaching too much importance to appearance, as it does not always indicate what kind of character one has, or what skills one may possess. So in my opinion, we should take care of our physical appearance, but “Never judge a book by its cover.”
第二节
One possible version:
Tex put one forkful in his mouth and said it tasted terrible directly. Our mom was shocked and said the way Tex said that hurt her feelings. Our dad also said that was an unkind thing to say and he asked Tex to apologize to Mom. Hearing this, Indi and I also said Tex had made us feel bad. When our mom asked Tex what had happened, Tex said it was me that told him to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I sighed and explained I just meant not to tell lies.
Throughout the rest of dinner, we had a big family conversation. We all agreed being honest is very important. But it does not mean speaking out whatever is on your mind and hurting someone's feelings. If no one is asking for your opinion, you can keep it to yourself. And if someone asks what you think, you should try to consider that person's feelings when you answer. There's almost always a way to be truthful and kind.

63. to practice。考查不定式。sb. is said to do sth.是固定搭配,表示“据说某人做某事”,故填to practice。
64. association。考查名词。设空处作宾语,且其前有形容词性物主代词their修饰,故填association。
