Nithu Carthikeyan is a junior at Irvington High School in Fremont. During his freshman year in 2017, a school project about recycling electronic waste inspired him to create his own organization and spread awareness about recycling properly.
In 2019, the teen said his organization collected 20, 000 pounds of e-waste. Through his website Keep Bay Area Beautiful, the 17-year-old creates drop-off drives at local libraries or parks in Fremont or Milpitas. His first drop-off location was the Milpitas Library. His donation box would be overflowing on a daily basis, so the library asked him to kindly take it out and they posted a list of nearby recycling centers instead.
“Thanks to the community, I was able to collect all of the electronic waste because the people took action, so it was not just me; it was a collective effort,” Carthikeyan said. Carthikeyan says he doesn’t blame anyone for recycling e-waste improperly, but hopes people become aware of what happens if they do.
“The danger of e-waste is really underrated. It’s so impactful (影响深远的) in developing countries because electronic waste is not properly disposed of (处理). Kids who have to work in landfills (垃圾填埋地) go near the chemicals in the electronic waste, such as lead and mercury ( 汞), which can lead to death. So the problem is not very many people know about it,” Carthikeyan said.
With the help of his website and social media, he posts when he’s holding drop-off drives at local parks or he coordinates with people when he can personally pick up old TVs, laptops, microwaves or any other e-waste materials. Depending on what is disposed of, he’s even sold parts online through eBay or Amazon and donated the money to House of Grace, a homeless shelter in San Jose.
Carthikeyan feels his generation has a platform to take a stand and help the environment. “I think with the younger generation, especially with technology, they have a voice that no other generation previously had.”
24. What made Carthikeyan found his own organization
A. Local libraries.
B. An online website.
C. A recycling project at school.
D. Children in developing countries.
25. What can we learn about Carthikeyan's organization
A. It meets with public disagreement.
B. It is located at the Milpitas Library.
C. It failed to collect a large amount of e-waste.
D. It set up many drop-off boxes in public spaces.
26. What may Carthikeyan agree with
A. Recycling is not the answer to the e-waste crisis.
B. Teens have no voice in environmental protection.
C. Community should be to blame for e-waste pollution.
D. People should know about the dangers of e-waste pollution.
27. What does Carthikeyan do with some of the e-waste materials he picks up
A. He sells them online.
B. He sends them to landfills.
C. He gives them to homeless people.
D. He donates them to local communities.

With advances in robotics and artificial intelligence continuing to surprise us, there probably is not a single industry being left untouched by these technologies. Though some believe that robots are dangerous for our society and could gradually make humans obsolete, the reality is far less dramatic. Today, tech companies are developing smart robots suitable for a variety of services. One such innovation comes from the French robot developer, Hease Robotics.
The company’s robotic solution, called Heasy, can be used in shopping centres, train stations, or airports. This autonomous robot is designed to greet, inform and guide customers. Thanks to its smart AI algorithms (算法), the robot will navigate (穿行) safely through crowded environments without bumping into people or objects. The machine is battery-operated and can run for eight hours on a single charge. 85% of people who interacted with Heasy said they were satisfied with the service provided by the robot.
The age of human-robot coexistence has come, and this doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. There are many ways we can turn this to our advantage. Take home robots, for example. The U.S. robotics firm Anki has created a robot called Vector to add fun to our daily routines. Vector is a small, autonomous companion equipped with a camera and machine learning tech. The robot won’t sweep your floors or take out the garbage. It will, however, serve as an adorable (讨人喜爱的) addition to your household.
If you’ve always wanted to have a pet, but weren’t allowed to own any, then Vector might be the right solution. When you call the robot, Vector will activate and turn to you, carefully listening for commands. You can simply ask for a weather forecast and the robot will respond in a second. And in case you forget to charge it, the robot will go to its charging dock by itself.
Both AI and robotics have come a long way. Robots are becoming smarter, and while people still have mixed feelings about this technology, the truth is that we can’t go back. Instead of fearing these innovations, we should accept them — after all, there isn’t much we can do to prevent the ongoing advancement of technology.
28. What does the underlined word “obsolete” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Outdated. B. Comfortable. C. Ashamed. D. Knowledgeable.
29. What do we know about Heasy
A. It can charge up all by itself.
B. It works eight hours every day.
C. It is popular with shopping assistants.
D. It can work in a crowded environment.
30. What is Vector mainly used for
A. Cleaning houses. B. Teaching children.
C. Looking after pets. D. Entertaining people.
31. How does the author look at the development of AI and robotics
A. Critically. B. Cautiously.
C. Objectively. D. Doubtfully.

A restaurant where robots serve tea and cakes probably sounds like a sci-fi movie scene, but it’s soon to be a reality. The Tea Terrace is investing big on tech while it awaits the end of lockdowns in the U.K. All bars, cafes and restaurants closed on March 20 to stop the spread of COVID-19. But even when businesses are free to welcome customers again, Ehab Shouly, the managing director who started the Tea Terrace in 2010, doesn’t think it will be the same as before.
The Tea Terrace will space out its tables at all of its four locations — two in London and two in Surrey. The customers’ concern about coming into contact with employees, however, required a more complex solution. Shouly and his company began to research ways that would make guests feel comfortable about returning to their tea rooms. The outcome When the Tea Terrace opens its doors again, there will be robotic waiters serving the food.
The Tea Terrace is not a new adopter of robots. The restaurant introduced a robotic waitress, named Theresa (after the former prime minister), at its Cobham branch in Surrey last July — becoming the first restaurant in the U.K. and Europe to do so.
Shouly and his team decided to bring in Theresa last year because at the Cobham location, there were a lot of bookings for events and celebrations. Serving large groups meant very heavy orders for employees to carry, so the company introduced Theresa to do it. Plus, a robot with a wig serving afternoon tea is a sight to see. “We wanted to have an entertaining factor for the customers but also something that will help our waiting staff,” Shouly says.
The tea room chain decided then to invest even more into tech by signing on to become the main distributor (分销商) for the manufacturer of Theresa in the U. K. and Europe. Shouly’s company created a new trading division that handles this aspect of the business and researches new technologies. “We see it as a growing opportunity,” Shouly says, “not just with the robots but in terms of looking at all the technologies that we’ve been using and bringing them to a larger-scale audience.”
32. What did Shouly give a lot of thought
A. How to serve food properly.
B. How to reduce customer-staff face time.
C. How to space out the tables in the restaurant.
D. How to come into contact with his employees.
33. What can be learned about Theresa in Shouly's restaurant
A. She is named after a place.
B. She is sent to work in different branches.
C. She is favored by the former prime minister.
D. She is the first robotic restaurant waitress in the U.K.
34. What effect did Shouly expect Theresa to have
A. Reducing the cost of labor.
B. Bringing the customers some fun.
C. Giving a hand to the customers.
D. Communicating with the customers.
35. What will Shouly's company do next
A. Promote its innovations.
B. Produce Theresa in great numbers.
C. Test Theresa in a more complex scene.
D. Use the restaurant space to do other business.

As an industrial engineer, Guillermo Martinez is an innovator. The proudest achievement of his career came after he browsed ( 浏览) YouTube for fun ways to use his new 3D printer.
After purchasing a 3D printer in 2017, Guillermo began researching how to build robots and stumbled across ( 偶然发现) a program for prosthetic limbs (假肢). “ 36 Then I thought to myself, ‘What if this can actually help someone ’” Guillermo said.
Guillermo was about to leave on a trip to Kenya, so he got in touch with the NGO Bamba Project beforehand to see if anyone there could benefit. 37 A flood of messages came in from people asking for prosthetics. Guillermo realized he had the power to change their lives. That’s how his project Ayúdame3D came into being.
38 Fortunately, Guillermo’s prosthetics cost only $50 to make — but he gives them out for free.
Made of plastic, the 3D-printed arms allow users to pick up and hold items weighing up to 22 pounds, making everyday tasks much easier.
“There are everyday things we do in our daily lives that we take for granted,” Guillermo said. “ 39 For others it’s a struggle, and that’s why I set up Ayúdame3D to do my own bit, however small.”
Guillermo has been working tirelessly to make his prosthetic limbs available to people around the world at no cost. What’s more, Guillermo is also teaching children how to use 3D printers so they can eventually make prosthetic limbs, too! 40 He’s a leader, a humanitarian, and, most importantly, a hero to everyone he helps.
A. Life is hard for all of us.
B. The response blew him away.
C. We don’t realize how lucky we are.
D. However, he didn’t receive any orders.
E. I started making many 3D-printed hand prostheses for fun.
F. Through his work, Guillermo has proven himself so much more than an engineer.
G. While many people are missing their arms or legs, very few can afford prosthetics.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After gymnastics on Friday, I waited by the front door of the gym to walk home with Jemma. Then I saw her going out the side door with some other girls. They looked at me and started giggling (咯咯地笑). I knew right then that my best friend wasn’t my best friend anymore.
On Saturday morning, my mother asked, “Simone, what are you and Jemma planning today ”
“Who’s Jemma ” I shrugged (耸耸肩), feeling rather upset.
My mother felt a little bit surprised and immediately realized what had happened, but she didn’t say anything. A little while later, she asked me if I could take some magazines she had packed up over to Nana. And I nodded silently.
I was halfway down the block when a new girl in the neighborhood stepped out from behind a gate. She looked like she was going to say something, but I quickened my steps and pretended that I didn’t see her.
Nana was just putting the phone down when I arrived at her apartment. When I sat on the sofa, she brought out a class photo of kids in old-fashioned clothes. She pointed to a girl with short hair. “That’s Beth Lambert,” Nana said. “She was my best friend back then. At least, she had been, until a week before the photo.”
Suddenly, I knew it was my mom that Nana had been talking to on the phone. “I have to go,” I said.
“Simone Gower,” Nana said firmly, “you stay right here.” She handed me a cup of coffee and continued, “Beth and I were best friends in school. We did everything together. Then one day she made new friends and said she didn’t want to hang out with me anymore. It hurt more than almost anything.”
I didn’t say anything. I knew I’d start crying if I opened my mouth.
Nana put down the photo and hugged me.

第一节
One possible version:
Good morning, everyone! It is my honor to share my opinions on whether robots replacing teachers is a good thing.
In my opinion, robots can never be as good as teachers. Firstly, a teacher's role is not just to teach, he also looks after the students in the class. Secondly, people are social animals. We like to learn in groups and learn from other people. Thirdly, teachers' ability to inspire is likely to be irreplaceable. Last but not least, while teaching facts and theories is one thing, relating the things you teach to everyday life is quite another. Therefore, it's better to use robots in classrooms as learning tools, not as teachers.
Thank you.
第二节
One possible version:
Nana said it happened to everyone and it was not my fault. She said sometimes friends grew apart. She told me that she didn't talk to anyone for three days, and then, she met a boy. Nana found another old photo and pointed to a boy with glasses. She said he lived near Beth and her. Each time Beth and she saw him, he'd smile at them, but they didn't pay much attention. Then, a few days after Beth said she wasn't Nana's friend anymore, Nana was walking home by herself and this boy was, too.
Nana said “Hello”, and she and this new friend started walking together. They immediately found they had much in common, and they got along very well with each other. Nana told me that one word is all it took. I finished my coffee, and then headed home. As I got near my home, that new girl appeared again. When I almost reached her, I said “Hello” to her, and she smiled back.

语言运用
第一节
主题语境:人与自我——生活
本文是说明文。教授John Williams介绍了未来的人类生活。
Unfortunately, it looks quite likely that the climate ... more flooding及fuel for heating or air conditioning will probably become much more expensive与our houses will certainly have to become much better ...
44. C。45. A。46. B。根据本段中的so we will need more adaptable furniture和we will be able to fold it away into wall cabinets及Houses could have moveable walls可知,我们会需要更多可折叠的、节省空间的家具,当我们不“使用(using)”它们的时候,就可以把它们折叠起来收入壁橱里。房子里的墙壁也可以移动,这样我们就可以根据需要自由“安排(arranged)”不同的空间大小。由此可以推测出,未来的房屋并不会很“大(big)”。
47. A。根据本段中的New technology will make us more self-sufficient及Kitchens may have fish tanks ... providing fish to eat可知,未来的厨房能让人类自给自足,配有鱼缸可以养鱼,还可以自己“种植(produce)”新鲜的蔬菜。
48. C。根据本段中的The plants will ... oxygen for the fish可知,鱼缸里的植物可以为鱼“提供(provide)”氧气。
49. B。根据本段中的These tanks will be powered by household waste and create ... which can then be used to run the family car可知,家里的废弃物会给这些鱼缸提供动力,而这些鱼缸还可以产生“能量(energy)”,这些能量能为家里的汽车提供动力。
50. D。本段中的which can then be used to run the family car与we might not all have cars之间是转折关系,故填though(虽然)。
51. D。根据本段中对家用机器人的描述可知,未来我们“一定(certainly)”会在家中配备更多的机器人。
52. A。该空后的to clean the fridge or open the curtains是对前面small robots的功能的描述,所以此处应填一个表示“设计”的动词,四个选项中只有designed符合此意。
53. D。54. C。根据本段中的fridges will tell us when food is about to go out of ... and even suggest recipes可知,冰箱能告诉我们食物何时“过期(go out of date)”,还能为我们推荐菜谱,由此可以推测出未来的冰箱是“智能的(Clever)”。
55. D。根据空后的by mobile phone可知,未来的房屋具有与人通过手机“交流(communicate with)”的功能。
