(21-22七年级下·江苏无锡·期中)When Dorothy woke up — she did not know how much later — the house was on the ground. It was in a field full of flowers, and there were hundreds of beautifully colored birds flying around and singing. Not far away, there was a stream with clear, fresh water.
Dorothy was still under her bed. She got up and left the house. She was surprised to see three little men and a little woman walking towards her. They were very strangely dressed. The men’s clothes were blue as their hats, but the woman’s clothes were white and had little stars all over them.
When they saw Dorothy, they walked up to her and bowed.
“Welcome to the land of the Munchkins,” one of the little men said. “We thank you for killing the Wicked Witch of the East. Now our people are free.”
“I’m afraid you are making a mistake,” Dorothy said. “I didn’t kill any witch.”
“Your house did,” one of the little men said. “ Look!”
He pointed to the house. Dorothy saw two feet sticking out from under it.
“Oh!” Dorothy shouted. “The house fell on her. What can I do ”
“There is nothing to do,” the little woman said. “The Wicked Witch of the East is dead, and the Munchkins are grateful to you.”
“Are you a Munchkin ” Dorothy asked.
“No, but I am their friend,” the little woman said. “I am the Witch of the North.”

(22-23七年级下·江苏盐城·阶段练习)The Lion took them on his back to jump across the ditch(沟), and he was tired after his five big jumps. Later in the afternoon they came to a wide river. They could see a beautiful country on the other side of it. There were green fields and a lot of flowers. They could also see the yellow brick road.
“Hòw can we cross the river ” Dorothy asked. “There isn’t a tree tall enough to fall across this river.”
“Easy!” the Scarecrow (稻草人) said. “The Tin Woodman will use his axe to build a raft(木筏).”
And this is what the Tin Woodman did. And while he was busy making the raft, Dorothy found some wild fruit and nuts, she ate hungrily. Then, because it was taking the Tin Woodman a long time to finish the raft, Dorothy lay down and went to sleep.
The night passed without any problems, and the next morning the raft was ready. They all got on the raft. The Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow had very long poles(杆子). They pushed their poles into the mud(淤泥) at the bottom of the river and the raft moved. But the water was flowing(流动) very fast. It took them down the river and far from the yellow brick road on the other side. The Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow couldn’t touch the bottom with their poles any more.
“This is very bad,” the Tin Woodman said. “We’re going towards the land of the Wicked Witch of the West” “We must go back and find the yellow brick road,” the Scarecrow said. He pushed his pole very hard into the mud but it got stuck. He couldn’t pull it out again! The raft moved away and he was still holding his pole in the middle of the river.

“Breaking in” means to teach a horse to wear a saddle and bridle, and to carry a person on his back. He mustn’t speak to other horses, or bite, or kick, and he must always do what his master says.
I hated wearing a bit (马嚼子) in my mouth. It was horrible, like a metal finger between my teeth. The saddle was not so bad. One morning, my master rode me around the meadow (草坪). I was proud to carry him, and I soon got used to it. But I didn’t like the iron shoes. They were very stiff and heavy on my feet. But in time I got used to that too.
My mother told me, “There are good men like our master, but there are bad men too. I hope you have good masters. But remember: always try your best.”
Early in May a man took me to Square Gordon’s home. My new stable (马厩) was large and comfortable. There was a fat grey little horse next to me.
“How do you do What is your name ” I said.
He said he was Merrylegs and he hoped I was good-tempered and that he didn’t like horses that bite. He looked over at a tall chestnut horse. In the afternoon, when she went out, Merrylegs told me about her.
“That’s Ginger,” he said. “She bites. One day she bit James, the groom (马倌). She says no one was kind to her before. But James and John Manly, our grooms, are very good to us, and Square Gordon doesn’t whip (鞭打) his horses, so I think she’s going to like it here.”

(22-23七年级下·江苏常州·期中)(I am Gulliver)
On 20th June 1702, I set off for Surat, on a ship called the Adventure (冒险). And in fact “adventure” was really an appropriate name for that ship, and for everything that happened on the trip.
The first part of our trip went well. But later there were some terrible storms (暴风雨). The winds were so strong that they sent our ship off course (航线). We didn’t know where we were.
At last, when the storms stopped, we saw an island (岛). We had no more drinking water, so the captain (船长) sent me to find some fresh water on the island. I set off with some other men in a small boat. And when we got there, I travelled around the island by myself while the men looked for water.
That was a big mistake. When I went back, there were no men and no boat! Then I saw them rowing back to our ship with a giant (巨人) following them in the sea! They were very afraid. I ran as fast as I could. I then climbed up a big hill and when I looked around, I saw fields. Then I saw other giants working in the fields.
“On my last trip, I was a giant on an island of tiny (小的) people and now I am a tiny person on an island of giant!” It was not a nice feeling. I was so sad and hid behind a big tree. I had to think of a plan, but at that time one of the giants saw me.

When I had a lot of food, I cooked it over a fire or dried(使……变干) it in the sun. This way I would have meat during the rainy months when I could not go out with a gun. I learned to make pots to keep my food in. But I wanted very much to make a stronger pot—a pot that would not break in a fire. I tried many times, but I could not do it.
Then one day, I was lucky. I made some new pots and put them in a very hot fire. They changed colour but did not break. I left them there for many hours, and when they were cold again, I found that they were hard(坚硬的) and strong. That night I was happy. I had hot water for the first time on the island(岛).
By then, I also had my own bread. That was lucky too. One day I found a little bag. We used it on the ship to keep the chickens’ food in. There was still some food in the bag, and I put some of it onto the ground. A month later, I saw something bright green there, and after six months, I had a very small field of corn(庄稼) and I was very happy. Maybe now I could make my own bread!
It was easy to say but not so easy to do. It is a lot of work to make bread from corn. Many people eat bread, but how many people can take corn from a field and make bread out of it without help I had to learn and make many new things, and it was a year before I cooked and ate my first bread.

(21-22七年级下·江苏泰州·阶段练习)My name is Robinson Crusoe, and I was born in the city of York in 1632. My father was a successful businessman. I had two elder brothers. One of them worked in the army (军队) and was killed during the war against Spain. The other was missing one day, and we never knew what had happened to him. “Two kinds of people go to sea,” he said. “They are the very poor people and the very rich people. The poor are foolish, having no other way to live. The rich own ships and can make money with them. You are neither too poor nor too rich. You are in the middle, so you should choose a middle way for your life. Stay at home with your mother and me. “It is a lovely evening, my dear Watson,” says a voice I know well. “How are you ”
The tall thin stranger is at the entrance — it is Sherlock Holmes!
“Holmes! I’m so happy to see you,” I say as get up. “What are you doing here Why are you not in London ” “I’m trying to find out what is happening,” replies Holmes. “And I’ve got some interesting information. Miss Stapleton is not Mr Stapleton’s sister, but his wife.”
“Good heavens, Holmes! Are you sure of this ”
“In your report you say that Stapleton was a teacher. After a little investigation, I discover the teacher is clearly our Mr Stapleton.”
“Look, Watson, you must go back to Baskerville Hall and stay with Sir Henry.”
Suddenly we hear a terrible scream. “Oh, my goodness!” I gasp. “What is it ”
“The hound!” cries Holmes. “Come, Watson! Come!” We run quickly over the moor.
“We are too late, Watson.”
A man is lying on the ground. As we come near, we see the dead body of Sir Henry Baskerville! He is wearing his brown tweed suit.
“Oh, no!” says Holmes,
“It is not Sir Henry — why, it is the escaped prisoner, Selden!”
Then, suddenly, it is all clear to me. I remember that Sir Henry gave his old suit to Barrymore, and Barrymore probably gave it to Selden.
“Then Selden is dead because of this suit,” says Holmes. “Think, Watson! Someone gives the hound some of Sir Henry’s clothes.”
Suddenly we see someone walking towards us. It is Stapleton.
Then he sees the dead body and adds: “Oh no! What’s this Is our dear friend Sir Henry dead ”

There was a sound of quick, light footsteps from inside the curtain of fog. The thick cloud had crept to within fifty metres of where we were hidden.
