At 10, Kishan Shrikanth won a place in the Guinness World Records as the youngest director of a professional feature film. By 12, he had also acted in 26 movies. He lives in Bangalore, India.
If I am going to school, I wake up at 7.30 am. If I have other work — acting or directing — it might be earlier. In a month, I will spend at least 10 days in my school, and the other 20 or so days on my shoot.
I was in fashion shows when I was three. A year later a friend of my dad's chose me for his movie in 2001.
On the days I go to Camlin English School I start at 8.30 am. I like playing football, volleyball and basketball. My sister goes to the same school. She always comes first in dancing and singing, but she doesn't want to be in a film. She wants to be a doctor. I enjoy being on stage.
The idea for the first film I directed, Care of Footpath, came to me when I was six. I saw homeless children on the streets selling newspapers to earn money as they had no parents. I felt bad. I wrote a story about it, and my father's friends read it and felt I should direct it. So I wrote the outline of the story and some journalists wrote the screenplay. Today the government gives free food and education to children, but slum (贫民窟) children still do not study. I hope the film encourages them to go to school. The film took about 60 days to shoot, and my parents were the producers. In June it won the jury prize (评审团奖) at a children's film festival in Italy.
And directing isn't the same as acting; when I am directing it is a very long day. One day I started at 4 am and ended at 3 am the next day. I wasn't tired. I've got lots and lots of energy.
The earliest I go to bed is 11 pm. I don't like sleeping. Before I sleep I have some milk, and then I go to bed.
24. What can we learn about Kishan Shrikanth when he was small

C. He shot his first movie in 2001.
D. He spent most of his time at school.
25. Why did Kishan Shrikanth shoot his first film
A. To record his friend's life.
B. To help homeless children.
C. To compete at a film festival.
D. To ask the government to settle social issues.
26. Which of the following can best describe Kishan Shrikanth
A. Childish and creative. B. Productive and humorous.
C. Far-sighted and talkative. D. Hard-working and caring.
27. What is the purpose of the text
A. To introduce a normal school child.
B. To show a highly-competitive career.
C. To describe a young director's life.
D. To explain how to become a professional film-maker.

People often let Jeannette Walls know that she should be angry at her parents. As told in her 2005 best-selling memoir (回忆录)“The Glass Castle,” Walls grew up in extreme poverty (贫穷) as part of a nomadic (流浪的) family. Her parents would not consider feeding the children and would give them a star in the sky rather than a present for Christmas.
But Walls refuses to agree with people, because Walls chooses to look on the bright side. Her parents dared their kids to dream.“I'm a big fan of facing the truth,” says Walls. “We all have these things, and if you face them they cannot hurt you, and they're the better part of you. If you're running from them and don't want to acknowledge them, you can't benefit from them.”
Walls's father was going to build the family a mansion (公馆) and power it with solar energy. “That's why I called the book ‘The Glass Castle,'” Walls says. The family was always on the move, with the father chasing his dreams.
The upside of parents not taking care of her and her siblings (兄弟姐妹) was they learned to take care of themselves. Walls could get through anything — including writing a book.
Walls figures it took about 20 versions to pen “The Glass Castle” to her liking. “It was the most difficult thing I've done in my life,” she says. “I couldn't bring myself to do it. I didn't know what to do with this story ...”
She had some enlightening incidents. Heading to a “fabulous party,” she saw her mother on the street and avoided being noticed. It made her think about facing the truth.
“My story is fascinating, and some people see it as tragic, while others see it as uplifting and inspirational,” Walls says. “It's all of the above.”
“The Glass Castle” spent more than five years on The New York Times bestseller list. “I believe it is a choice what we choose to focus on,” she says. “There are gifts that are wrapped up in the worst experiences.”
28. What can be learned about Walls's parents
A. They were easy to anger.
B. They had no great ambitions.
C. They were interested in the universe.
D. They cared little about their children.
29. What did Walls learn from her parents
A. How to write a book.
B. How to look after herself.
C. Dare to follow her dreams.
D. Dare to acknowledge imperfections.
30. How did Walls feel about her experience of writing“The Glass Castle”
A. Discouraging. B. Challenging. C. Satisfying. D. Inspiring.
31. What is“The Glass Castle”about according to Walls
A. Love and loss. B. Hope and change.
C. Heartbreak and recovery. D. Acceptance and compassion.

To mark the end of Teacher Appreciation Week, we thought we'd take a moment to think deeply about the most influential books we picked up thanks to a teacher. We asked several writers.
Maria Semple, the best-selling author of “Where'd You Go, Bernadette,” chose “The Great Gatsby.” “Through ninth grade, I read novels mainly for fear of getting busted (被降级),”she said.“That changed when David Webb assigned ‘The Great Gatsby.’ I vividly remember the day Mr. Webb told us how he understood the book, explaining the deeper meaning of the green light at the end of the dock (码头), and I was delighted to discover that a novel could be more than its plot. It's a joy I've been chasing (追求) ever since: as an English major in college and a novelist myself.”
Priya Parmar, the author most recently of “Vanessa and Her Sister,” recalled, “In 11th grade, I took a class called Romantic Poetry. Our teacher Ms. Sidebotham brought her new baby, Susannah, with her. There were nine of us, and all that spring we sat in a circle on the floor and read poetry. When it got warm, we sat out on the grass under the trees. It was the kind of rare, special magic that happens when a class becomes something else. We became more than a class. Summer came. We cried when the year ended. I asked Ms. Sidebotham for a book that would carry that feeling of collective magic forward. She gave me‘A Tree Grows in Brooklyn’by Betty Smith. I carry it forward.”
Veronica Chambers, the author of “Queen Bey,” found comfort in her Spanish literature course. “Nacu an Saez, my professor, handed me Isabel Allende's ‘The House of the Spirits’ that year.” Immediately, Chambers fell down the rabbit hole that took Alice to Wonderland and set foot in the wonderland of timeless literary works. “He gave me book after book after that. The books taught me everything.”
And now we'd love to hear from you: Was there a book a teacher recommended that you'd never have picked up on your own but ended up loving Which assigned book made the deepest impression
32. In what way did Mr. Webb influence Semple
A. He helped her improve her grades.
B. He taught her about the key role of plot.
C. He persuaded her to become a novelist.
D. He let her enjoy the pleasure of reading novels.
33. Which of the following was the most unforgettable for Parmar
A. The time spent with Susannah.
B. The feeling of collective magic.
C. The poems read by Ms. Sidebotham.
D. The teamwork among her classmates.
34. What does the author probably mean by saying the underlined words in paragraph 4
A. Chambers was doubtful about her literature course.
B. Chambers decided to create a story about rabbits.
C. Chambers was attracted by Allende's book.
D. Chambers preferred Alice's story.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. How famous writers look at their teachers.

Getting their fishing gear (装备), Francesco and Brian rode to the abandoned quarry (采石场). They settled down at the edge of the bank, cast their lines, and waited patiently for a bite.
They spent hours searching for unusual rocks to add to their collection for Miss Bailey's rock project. Suddenly, Francesco saw something unusual. “Look at that rock,” he said as he reached for it. “It looks like the trilobite (三叶虫) in Miss Bailey's fossil book.”
Brian took a look and saw that it was a trilobite.
“We could donate it to the museum, and we'll be on the news! We'll be famous,” said Francesco.
Just then, they heard Emily and Anna coming.
“Quick, hide it,” whispered Francesco. “If they see it, they'll tell everyone.” Francesco placed the stone in some tall grass on the bank. Then the boys went back to their fishing. “Let's leave it there for now,” Brian said. “We'll come back and get it after supper. Then we'll decide what to do with it.”
Francesco agreed. They picked up their fishing gear and headed back.
When their paths parted, and Francesco was riding home, he thought, “I want that fossil. I saw it first. It's mine.” He immediately turned around, rode back, picked up the rock, and put it in his pocket. He felt good riding home.
Brian could hardly eat his supper, thinking, “I want it for myself. I'm going back for it before Francesco does.” After supper, he rushed out. Arriving at the spot, he searched and searched, but the fossil wasn't there. He knew the girls didn't take it; they were too far away to see it. “It's gone! Did Francesco beat me to it ”He thought angrily.
As soon as Brian saw his friend riding up the path, he shouted, “You took the fossil! YOU STOLE IT!” “So what ” Francesco said. “I found it ... it's mine! I knew you were going to come back for it.” Francesco gave Brian a hard push. Brian stumbled over (被……绊倒) some rocks, and then fell backwards into the quarry.

One possible version:
Good afternoon, my respected teacher and dear classmates.
The novel I want to share with you is Anne of Green Gables written by Canadian writer Lucy Maud Montgomery.
The work is a charming coming-of-age story about a spirited and unconventional orphan girl Anne Shirley, who is sent to an elderly brother and sister by mistake. Her sunny nature and unusual imagination win the hearts of everyone in the community.
Mark Twain called Anne “the most lovable child in fiction” since Lewis Carroll's Alice. What inspires me most is she lives life with a heart that is wide open — to life, to love, to friendship, to experience.
Thank you.

One possible version:
Francesco froze in horror. He could not believe what had happened. He ran to the edge of the bank, but he couldn't see Brian. “Brian, you're a good swimmer! Why aren't you coming up He must have hurt his head.” At that thought, he dived into the quarry and soon was struggling to get hold of Brian's arms in the water. He quickly pulled him up to the surface.
Swimming to the bank, the two rested there. Coughing and catching their breath, they sat without talking, unable to look at each other. Then their eyes met, and they suddenly broke into laughter. Francesco took the fossil from his pocket and handed it to Brian. After staring at it for a few seconds, Brian handed it back, saying, “It's yours. You found it.” Francesco looked at the rock and said, “Come on! Let's take it to class together. We'll win that rock project.” The two boys headed home, agreeing on improving their rock project, and realizing their treasure was with each other.
