Charity walk talk The Sunshine Youth Fund organized a charity walk around Tai Shek Lake on 17 September. It was very hot on that day, but over two hundred people came and joined the event. We raised $120, 700. The money will go to Project Oasis in Malaysia, which will help provide clean water for some faraway villages. The people in those villages will have a stable water supply from now on. In some faraway villages in Malaysia, women and girls are tasked with gathering water from faraway springs, rivers, and ponds. On average, they walk over an hour each time, often through forests and over mountains. Mesalech, her husband, four of their sons, and their one granddaughter live in a village. Every day, Mesalech's granddaughter gathers water at the spring half a mile from her home. At eight years old, she carries one gallon ( 加仑) each time she travels to the spring, and she journeys to the spring three times before the sun goes down. “I want my granddaughter to get educated,” Mesalech said. “I want there to be safe water in my village.” When you give safe water, you give children the opportunity to go to school. A British family of four are leaving South West London for the world's smallest nature reserve to launch a coral farm to save the reef. Karolina and Barry Seath have sold their house and are now preparing to move to Moyenne Island, part of the Seychelles.
Barry, a 47-year-old former policeman, said, “We are just a normal husband, wife, and two kids, living the sort of life that most others do. But we both felt the need to make a positive change. So we have sold our home and parted company with most of our goods.”
On several holidays to the Seychelles, the Seaths saw how the coral was deteriorating over time as they swam around the coastline. Now, around 90% of the island's coral has died. The couple were eager to make a difference and to show their daughters, Georgina, 11, and Josephine, 7, a different way of life. They've teamed up with experts at the Marine Conservation Society Seychelles, whose staff specialise in corals.
Building the farm is scheduled to take just three months with all the equipment, costing 25, 000. Once complete it will be the first land-based coral farm in the Indian Ocean. They aim to grow around 10, 000 corals a year. A diverse range of corals will be grown and then replanted in the local reefs. The process involves cutting an individual coral into small pieces, which then encourages their growth rates. The corals will be grown in temperature-controlled tanks for up to nine months, before being replanted in the local reefs. Whilst in the tanks, the corals will also be kept in warmer temperatures, enabling them to adapt at a young age to the ever-increasing sea temperatures they will face when returned back into their natural habitat.
Georgina and Josephine will study at a new school on Mahé island, just a 15-minute boat trip from Moyenne. Josephine said, “I'll miss my friends, but I'm really eager to see lots of different animals and help my dad look after the coral.” Georgina added, “I'm really excited to have this opportunity to move abroad and learn more about the world. I hope we can make a real difference.”

After searching for more than a quarter century, archaeologists may have finally located the capital city of Sak Tz'i', a Maya kingdom that's referenced in sculptures and inscriptions ( 碑铭) from across the ancient Maya world. But it wasn't archaeologists who made the find. A local man discovered a tablet near Lacanja Tzeltal, a community in Chiapas, Mexico. The tablet's inscriptions are a treasure trove ( 宝藏) of mythology, poetry and history that reflect the typical Maya practice of weaving together myth and reality.
Sak Tz'i' probably wasn't an especially powerful kingdom, said Charles Golden, an associate professor at Brandeis University. Despite being surrounded by stronger neighbors, evidence suggests that the kingdom's capital city was occupied for more than a millennium after being settled in 750 B.C.E. The kingdom's longevity ( 长寿) may be due to the defenses that surrounded its capital city. The researchers found evidence that the city was protected by a stream with a steep valley on one side and defensive walls on the other. The team members added that the kingdom may have benefitted from forming strategic peace deals with its more powerful neighbors, as evidenced in texts.
There's a figure of a dancing ruler carved into the bottom of the tablet. This ruler is dressed like the god Yopaat, who is associated with violent tropical storms. The figure holds a lightning-bolt ax (斧) in his right hand and a stone weapon used in ritual ( 仪式的) combat in his left hand. What's more, the researchers found another sculpture that appears to tell of a fire that destroyed part of the city during a violent conflict with one of its neighbors.
The discovery marks a major step forward in the study of the ancient Maya world. The researchers hope further analysis will offer new insight into the politics, economy, rituals and warfare of the Maya civilization's western regions. The team is especially interested in how kingdoms such as Sak Tz'i' managed to exist for so long, despite apparently never becoming as powerful as other kingdoms in the region.
28. What did the local man mentioned in paragraph 1 find
A. The location of Sak Tz'i'.
B. A community in Chiapas, Mexico.
C. A treasure trove in Lacanja Tzeltal.
D. The historical records of a Maya kingdom.

A. It had strong military defenses.
B. It had aggressive foreign policies.
C. It was occupied by its neighbors in 750 B.C.E.
D. It was in conflict with its neighbors for a thousand years.
30. What can we imply from the figure of the dancing ruler
A. The ruler was a great musician at that time.
B. The kingdom had experienced natural disasters.
C. The kingdom had defeated one of its neighbors.
D. The ruler was to blame for the fall of the kingdom.
31. What do the researchers want to know most
A. The story behind the discovery.
B. The extent of the Maya civilization.
C. The reason behind some kingdoms' longevity.
D. The role of Sak Tz'i' in the ancient Maya world.

The huge stones at Stonehenge in southern England came from just 15.5 miles away, according to new research.
Most of the sarsens, or sandstone boulders ( 巨石), came from West Woods in the English county of Wiltshire, researchers explained, which they learned from examining the chemical composition (成分) of the stones. The sarsens are up to 30 feet tall and can weigh as much as 25 tons. The research is published in the journal Science Advances.
“Until recently we did not know it was possible to find out the origin of a stone like a sarsen,” said David Nash, the study's lead author, in a statement. “It has been really exciting to use 21st-century science to understand the Neolithic past and answer a question that scientists have been discussing for centuries.”
Portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry ( 光谱测定法) was used to analyze the stones. “Next, the researchers performed inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and ICP-atomic emission spectrometry of samples from a central part previously drilled from one sarsen stone and a range of sarsen boulders from across southern Britain,” the scientists explained, in the statement.
This led the scientists to West Woods. “The reason Stonehenge's builders selected this site remains a mystery, although the researchers suggest the size and quality of West Woods' stones, and the ease with which the builders could access them, may have been factored into the decision,” they explained in the statement.
Stonehenge continues to be a source of interest for historians. Earlier this year English Heritage, which oversees the famous site, noted that parts of Stonehenge are like a kind of an ancient “Lego”.
The first monument ( 古迹) at the site was constructed about 5, 000 years ago. The world - famous stone circle was built around 2500 BCE during the late Neolithic period.
The World Heritage site is known for its link with the movements of the sun — thousands of people travel to the site near Amesbury in southern England to mark the solstices (至日) in summer and winter.
32. What can we infer from David Nash's words
A. The find was thrilling to him.
B. Many researchers were doubtful about his find.
C. Where the huge stones came from remains mysterious.
D. Scientists knew much about the Neolithic culture.
33. How did the scientists draw the conclusion
A. By interviewing the historians.
B. By doing a simple test underground.
C. By measuring the size of stones in England.
D. By comparing the stones' chemical composition with others'.
34. What does the underlined part “the decision” in paragraph 5 refer to
A. Studying the stones in West Woods.
B. Making sure of the quality of the stones.
C. Using West Woods' stones for Stonehenge.
D. Determining how to build the monument.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. The reasons for building Stonehenge remained unclear.
B. Basic facts of Stonehenge were examined by scientists.
C. The ways of transporting Stonehenge's stones became known.
D. Scientists worked out where Stonehenge's huge stones came from.

The mystery of Flight 19
The name “Bermuda Triangle” as it is referred to by some is an unofficial title for the triangular area of the Atlantic between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. The area covers over a million square kilometers of ocean. 36 Among them is the mysterious disappearance of all the planes of US Navy, Flight 19.
37 One is the popular belief that supernatural forces were at play. Some theorize that aliens took away the craft and sent them to another planet. Some theorize that monsters were doing their handiwork. One thing is certain. There were very strange forces at work during these disappearances, and logical theories and explanations have fallen short of satisfying skeptics.
38 This part of the Atlantic is subject to sudden storms. The Gulf Stream, which flows through this part of the Atlantic, can quickly erase evidence of disasters at sea. On the ocean floor, there is a mixture of shoals ( 浅滩) and deep trenches, creating unpredictable conditions. 39 People travel in this area in craft that are too small to withstand the conditions, and are without the experience to respond in a satisfactory way when conditions change.
The US Coast Guard prefers to dispel ( 消除) any idea of supernatural forces at play. 40 They think that human error, natural forces, and coincidence are reasons responsible for these unsolved disasters.
A. They would have run low on fuel.
B. They prefer to accept a logical viewpoint.
C. There are two schools of thought on these disappearances.
D. The disappearance of the search plane was much stranger.
E. In addition to environmental causes is the concept of human error.
F. A more logical way of thinking is to consider the many natural explanations.
G. And it is famous for the unexplained disappearances of many ships and airplanes.

Daud clapped his hands. The monkey clapped his hands. “Stop, Hitam,” Daud said. Hitam stopped. Azimi did a somersault (翻筋斗). The monkey did somersault after somersault. “Stop, Hitam,” Azimi said. Hitam stopped.
“Azimi! Daud!” their mother called from the house. “Your father is fishing today. You need to pick one hundred coconuts ( 椰 子) to sell at the market tomorrow.” “OK, Mom!” the boys shouted. They got the cart ( 手推车) and pulled it to the coconut forest. Hitam followed them. Twenty-five feet above them coconuts hung on the branches.
“That's high,” Daud said. “I wish our father was like Uncle Tahar. He uses monkeys to get the coconuts.”
“We have a monkey,” Azimi said. “He's smart. He will do whatever we do.”
Azimi grabbed Daud's head and bent his ears. “Break it off!” Azimi twisted Daud's head. Hitam reached for the brown fruit and twisted until the coconut broke off the stem. He let go of the coconut. It fell to the ground at Azimi's feet.
“Another one, Hitam! Drop another one!” Azimi called. Hitam dropped another coconut, and another. Hitam picked so many they didn't fit in the cart. Azimi and Daud put them into piles.
Daud looked at the huge piles. “We must have two hundred coconuts,” he said. Azimi looked up at Hitam. “OK, Hitam, come down now.” Hitam climbed down the tree.

One possible version:
“We won't sell that many coconuts tomorrow,” said their mother, standing in the front door. “So we will throw them back in the forest,” said Daud. “We don't waste food,” their mother said. The next day, the two boys went to the market to sell coconuts. To their disappointment, they didn't sell all the coconuts, like their mother guessed. “Lazy boys who don't like to work will have to pay. You will eat everything we can't sell,” said their mother. Azimi and Daud looked at the big pile of coconuts and then at each other. They felt a bit regretful.
All that week, Azimi and Daud ate coconuts. They ate coconuts for breakfast, for lunch, and for supper. They ate them fried and they ate them boiled. They drank coconut milk. They ate them covered with jam. They ate them covered with nuts. They fed pieces to Hitam under the table. “What should we teach Hitam next ” Daud asked. “We will teach Hitam to never touch another coconut,” Azimi said. “Or maybe we will teach him to sell them.”
