Having lived in the ho ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )use for so long, we found our kitchen looked _1_ . We decided it was time to _2_ the kitchen, and my husband and I were discussing _3_ colors. The children, sitting nearby, suddenly all spoke together: "Not the measuring stick. ”
"No," I _4_ them. "Not the measuring stick. ”
The measuring s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tick isn’t a (an) _5_ stick but the kitchen side of the door between our kitchen and dining room. Along the edge we‘ve _6_ each child s growth by making a mark showing his or her _7_ on every birthday. Over the years so many colored pens, pencils and _8_ have been used, that now, this white door is somewhat like an abstract painting.
Names and dates show ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) different _9_ ,and I can tell by the script(手迹)who measured whom. An eight-year-old _10_ to measure her three-year old sister, a grandchild measured her grandmother and my husband did the same to me. At our family _11_ ,when this door swung back and forth frequently, friends used to stop to _12_ the names and dates. When they were asked if they would like to be always remembered, they _13_ smiled shyly and went back right up into place, _14_ to be measured.
Many of those _1 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )5_ on the door are still _16_ . Some have stopped. Some re- main with us only in _17_ . When my mother came to see my eldest daughter graduate from university, we measured her, too. It was her last visit to our home.
We haven’ t _18_ the new kitchen color plan yet, but one thing is certain: whatever color we choose, the _19_ of the kitchen door will still remain _20_ ,with lots of names and dates in various colors.

CLOZE 2
Today’s Engli ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sh learner has a wide choice of dictionaries. There are 1 with American English, with British English, with idioms or slang, and 2 with pictures. One of the tnost 3 dictionaries I have seen among many students is the 4 electronic dictionary. All you have to do is to 5 a word in your language and you can see it and 6 it in English. That’s great, right Well, 1 think it’ s great, too.., but only sometimes.
Bilingual electr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )onic dictionaries are fast and 7 They can be ga’eat 8 you are traveling and need information quickly. 9 I am against electronic dictionaries and even bilingual 10 dictionaries in many cases. Let me explain.
When you rea ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ch an intermediate (中学程度的 )level of English, you know 11 of the language to ask the meaning of certain things while using English. Translating between languages in your head 12 time. You should be translating as little as possible and 13 in English as much as possible. I strongly recommend that intermediate and advanced students should 14 an English-English dictionary, that is made 15 for your understanding. For example, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press has good dictionaries for students and 16 publishing houses do, too.
I also feel that pape ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r dictionaries are better for studying than electronic dictionaries. True, they take longer to use. But, for some reason, the information you 17 seems to stay in your head longer. It may be 18 you are forced to spell the word in your head and therefore "see it" more clearly in your 19.
So what do ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )you do if you have checked an English-English dictionary and still don’t understand something Go tc your bilingual dictionary. It is useful sometimes. Just remember to try to 20 in English as much as possible.

Robert Owen was ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) born in Wales in 1771. At the age of ten he went to work. His employer had a large private library so Owen was able to educate himself. He read a lot in his spare time and at nineteen he was given the job of superintendent(监工)at a Manchester cotton mill. He was so successful there that he persuaded his employer to buy the New Lanark mill in Scotland.
When he arrived at ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) New Lanark, it was a dirty little town with a population of 2, 000 people. Nobody paid any attention to the workers' houses or their children's education. The conditions in the factories were very bad. There was a lot of crime and the men spent most of their wages on alcoholic drinks.
Owen improved the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) houses. He encouraged people to be clean and save money. He opened a shop and sold the workers cheap, well-made goods to help them. He limited the sale of alcoholic drinks. Above all,he fixed his mind on the children's education. In 1816,he opened the first free primary school in Britain.
People came from all over the country to visit Owen's factory. They saw that the workers were healthier and more efficient than in other towns. Their children were better fed and better educated. Owen tried the same experiment in the United States. He bought some land there in 1825,but the community was too far away. He could not keep it under control and lost most of his money.
Owen never stopped fighting for his idea. Above all,he believed that people are not born good or bad. He was a practical man and his ideas were practical, too. Never go into a supermarket hungry! This is a good piece of advice. If you go shop- ping for food before lunchtime, you 11 probably buy more than you plan to. Unfortunately, however, just this advice isn’t enough for consumers these days. Modern shoppers need an education in how and how not to buy things at the store. First, you check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out the items that are on sale and decide if you really need these things. In other words, don’t buy anything just because it s cheaper than usual! "New and Improved!” or “All Natural" on the front of a package influence you. Instead, read the list of contents on the back. Third, compare prices: that is, you should examine the prices of both different brands and different sizes of the same brand.
Another suggestion for consumers is to buy ordinary items instead of famous brands. Ordinary items in supermarkets come in plain packages. These products are cheaper because producers don’ t spend much money on packing or advertising. The quality, however, is usually as good as the quality of well-known name brands. In the same way, in buying clothes, you can often find high quality and low prices in brands that are not famous. Shopping in discount clothing stores can help you save a lot of money. Although these stores aren’t very attractive, and they usually do not have individual dressing rooms, not only are the prices low,but you can often find the same famous brands that you find in high-priced department stores.
Wise consumers read magazine ads and watch TV commercials, but they do this with one advantage: knowledge of the psychology behind the ads. In other words, well —informed consumers watch for information and check for misinformation. They ask themselves questions: Is the advertiser hiding something in small print at the bottom of the page Is there any real information in the commercial, or is the advertiser simply showing an attractive image With the answers to these questions, consumers can make a wise choice.

We find that ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) bright children are rarely held back by mixed ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(把……按能力分班)pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all,it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade !
Besides, it is rather unreal to grade pupils just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value person- al qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.
In our classrooms, we ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to deal with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively in order to have the ability to become leaders. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.
Sometimes the pupil ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s work in pairs ; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.

The amount of carbon ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )taken in by growing plants increased from 1982 to 1999 as temperatures rose and the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased. But a new study in Friday’ s edition of the journal Science found a drought-related decline in such plant growth from 2000 to 2009,even though temperatures continued to climb.
As drought caus ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed by warming reduces the land’s ability to take in carbon, the result could be more carbon dioxide left in the atmosphere, and thus more warming, Zhao Maosheng from ,the University of Montana explained in a telephone interview.
" This is a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )pretty serious warning that warmer temperatures are not going to endlessly improve plant growth, "co-author Steven Running, also from the University of Moutaua, said in a statement. "We see this as a bit of a surprise, and potentially significant on a policy level because previous interpretations suggested global warming might actually help plant growth around the world, " he said.
Instead, he ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )and Zhao found a small but measurable decline of about 1%, compared to a 6% increase in the past decade.
Their st ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )udy based on the data collected by NASA satellites found that north areas continued to increase plant growth, thanks to warmer temperatures and a longer growing season.
Someone commented ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ),“ This past decade’s net decline in earthly productivity suggests that a complex relationship between temperature, rainfall, cloudiness, and carbon dioxide, probably in combination with other factors such as nutrients and land management will determine future patterns and trends in productivity.

2. Zhao Maosheng really worried that______ .
A. more and more land will be abandoned
B. the climate becomes warmer and warmer
C.. the emission of carbon dioxide increases
D. drought further reduces the number of the plants
3. We can infer from the passage that _____.
A. global warming will determine the future productivity
B. various factors play a key role jointly on future productivity
C, earthly productivity actually increased in the past decade
D. temperature ri ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )se has had no effect on future productivity patterns
