Jia Ling Stuns with Toned Abs in “YOLO”
Jia Ling, known for her comedic prowess and infectious personality, has long been a fixture in the Chinese entertainment industry. She’s also cemented her foray into directing and now returns with YOLO. It’s her second major screen production, following a massive success in her directorial debut film Hi Mom in 2021.
Jia Ling’s latest film has finally hit the big screen as part of the Spring Festival movies in 2024. But it’s not just the movie itself that’s causing a stir—it’s the 41-year-old actress’s stunning physical transformation. In the early teasers for YOLO, which follows a complete homebody who takes up boxing, audiences caught glimpses of Jia Ling’s dedication to her role as a boxer. She had shed an impressive 50kg (60 to be exact) in a span of six months. However, it wasn’t until the movie’s release that viewers truly got to witness the extent of her transformation.
In the new poster for YOLO, viewers finally see a clear glimpse of Jia Ling’s fruits of labor. She reveals a toned figure after adopting a high-intensity fitness regimen that not only slimmed her down but also sculpted her physique. Jia Ling’s abs actually trended number one on the Weibo hot search. Despite having a slim figure in the past, the actress-director gained prominence in the comedy scene, known to carry extra weight for years, making her recent transformation all the more remarkable.
It’s not uncommon to see transformations for the sake of the storyline. Actors can wear prosthetics or others go the extra mile with extreme weight transformations. Jia Ling’s journey to shed weight was not just about
slimming down; it was about building muscle and strength and she’s remained steadfast in her commitment. However, Jia Ling has been adamant that YOLO is not a film about weight loss. Instead, it’s a story about empowerment and self-discovery—a message that resonates deeply with audiences of all ages.
24. What is the main focus of Jia Ling's latest film "YOLO"
A. Weight loss journey. B. Comedy and laughter.
C. Empowerment and self-discovery. D. Physical transformation for a role.

Gigantopithecus blacki extinct after failure to adapt to environmental changes
Chinese, Australian and US researchers have revealed more about the extinction of the Gigantopithecus blacki great ape in their latest joint study, which was published in Nature on Thursday. The study found that Gigantopithecus blacki became extinct between 295,000 and 215,000 years ago due to being unable to adapt its food preferences and behavior, as well as being vulnerable to the changing climate, the Global Times learned from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
With a height of about three meters and weight of about 250 kilograms, Gigantopithecus blacki is the largest primate that has ever existed on the Earth. It is a very distant human ancestor. Gigantopithecus blacki once roamed the karst plains of southern China and became extinct before humans arrived in the region, leaving around 2,000 fossilized teeth and four jawbones among the only signs of their existence. "The story of Gigantopithecus blacki is an enigma in paleontology - how could such a mighty creature go extinct at a time when other primates were
adapting and surviving The unresolved cause of its disappearance has become a mystery in the field," said Zhang Yingqi, a Chinese paleontologist from the IVPP and co-lead author of the study.
According to Zhang, the IVPP has been excavating for Gigantopithecus blacki remains in southern China for more than 10 years, but could figure out the cause of its extinction through consistent environmental analysis. Definitive evidence revealing the story of the giant ape's extinction came from a large-scale evidence collecting project on 22 cave sites spread across a wide region of South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. "It's a major challenge to present a defined cause for the extinction of a species. At first, we should figure out the exact time when a species disappears from the fossil record so that we can conduct an environmental reconstruction and behavior assessment," said Kira Westaway, a geochronologist associate professor from Macquarie University who is another co-lead author of the study. "Without robust dating, you are simply looking for clues in the wrong places," Westaway said.
Six different dating techniques were applied to analyze the cave sediments and fossils. Luminescence dating, which measures a light-sensitive signal found in the burial sediments that encased the Gigantopithecus blacki fossils, was the primary technique, supported by uranium series (US) and electron-spin resonance (US-ESR) dating of the Gigantopithecus blacki teeth themselves. By direct-dating the fossil remains, the scientists confirmed the fossils' age aligns with the luminescence sequence in the sediments where they were found, providing a comprehensive and reliable chronology for the extinction of Gigantopithecus blacki.
Using detailed pollen analysis, fauna reconstructions, stable isotope analysis of the teeth and a detailed analysis of the cave sediments at a micro level, the team established the environmental conditions when Gigantopithecus blacki went extinct. Then, using trace element and dental microwear mark textural analysis (DMTA) of the ape's teeth, the team built a comparison model between when it was flourishing and when it was close to extinction. According to scientists, tooth tissue contains rich information related to species' feeding behavior that can be used to interpret in depth whether they are facing survival pressure, the diversity of their food, the regularity of their feeding behavior and their activity range.
The findings show Gigantopithecus blacki went extinct between 295,000 and 215,000 years ago, much earlier than previously assumed. Before that time, Gigantopithecus blacki flourished in a rich and diverse forest environment. However, by 700,000 to 600,000 years ago, the increased seasonality in the forest led to diversification of the environment and change in the structure of the forest communities. Orangutans (genus Pongo) - a close relative of Gigantopithecus blacki - adapted in size, behavior and habitat preferences as conditions
changed. However, Gigantopithecus blacki relied on a less nutritious food source when its preferences were unavailable. At the same time, they grew larger and bulkier, and their geographical range for feeding was greatly reduced. Therefore, its population faced long-term survival pressure and continued to shrink, eventually becoming extinct.
It was Gigantopithecus blacki's stubbornness and conservatism that led to its demise, Zhang noted. As the specter of a sixth mass extinction looms over us, we urgently need to understand why species become extinct. As with the story of the extinction of Gigantopithecus blacki, exploring unresolved extinction events in the past will help us to understand the resilience of primates and the fate of other large animals in the past and into the future, Westaway noted.
28.According to the joint study published in Nature, what were the primary factors that led to the extinction of Gigantopithecus blacki
A. Lack of suitable habitats.
B. Inability to adapt food preferences and behavior.
C. Competition with other primate species.
D. Overhunting by humans.
29.How did the researchers determine the age of Gigantopithecus blacki fossils
A. By analyzing the size and weight of the fossils.
B. Through detailed pollen analysis.
C. Using luminescence dating and other dating techniques.
D. By studying the geographical range of Gigantopithecus blacki.
30.What environmental changes contributed to Gigantopithecus blacki's extinction
A. Increase in seasonality in the forest.
B. Adaptation of orangutans in size, behavior, and habitat preferences.
C. Availability of a less nutritious food source.
D. Growth of Gigantopithecus blacki population.

China commits to establishing region-specific environmental management system by 2025
China recently rolled out guidelines on building a system for region-specific environmental management by 2025. This system establishes comprehensive environmental goals for different regions to meet, while also allowing
for flexibility in implementing measures that are tailored to local conditions. Experts believe that this move signifies a shift toward a more nuanced and sophisticated approach to environmental management in China.
The guidelines were jointly issued by the general offices of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday.
It is important to adopt a region-specific approach to environmental management, and to enforce red lines for the protection of ecosystems, the quality of the environment, and rational resource utilization, according to the guidelines.
By 2025, the system for region-specific environmental management should be established, and the system will be full-fledged and functioning efficiently by 2035, the guidelines noted.
The guidelines include 18 detailed policies covering six aspects, including facilitating high-quality development, ensuring high-level protection of the ecological environment, and strengthening supervision and assessment.
The guidelines call on regions to make their own environmental protection plans, based on the principle of sticking to national guide, obey the coordination from provincial level.
The previous ecological environment management systems were relatively extensive, with a one-size-fits-all approach that did not take into account the differences in development stages and the nature of problems in China, Li Wei, a professor from school of environment, Beijing Normal University, told the Global Times on Monday. Li had participated in making of the region-specific environmental management system.
For example, the system said that under the red lines listed for the protection of ecosystems, areas with high pressure for improving ecological environment quality, as well as high intensity of resource and energy consumption, should identify the areas where development conflicts with protection, and determine the key ecological environment control units.
Li said the new system achieves precision in ecological environment management through the differences in various regions. And unlike the previous environmental protection systems, which focus solely on certain area, the new system also manages to integrate elements such as water, air, soil, and ecology, as well as resources and environment, in a coordinated manner.
The new system also highlights the integration and innovation of new technology, artificial intelligence into environmental protection. It calls for the improvement of online government services and smart decision-making functions, in addition to enhance service efficiency.
In January, The Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council have issued guidelines to comprehensively promote the development of a "Beautiful China."
This development must be given prominence in the construction of a strong country and in the process of achieving national rejuvenation, according to the guidelines.
By 2027, China will have seen a continuous decrease in the total discharge of major pollutants and improve the quality of its ecological environment.
By 2035, green methods of production and ways of life will have been developed broadly, carbon emissions will have peaked and be in steady decline, and the country's ecological environment will have improved fundamentally.
31.What does the Ever Shining Cinema charity program provide for people with vision loss
A. Free cinema tickets. B. Audio descriptions for movies.
C. Braille books. D. Visual aids for theaters.
32.What is the timeframe set for establishing a system for region-specific environmental management in China
A. By 2025 B. By 2035
C. By 2027 D. By 2030
33.How many detailed policies are included in the guidelines for region-specific environmental management
A. 10 B. 15
C. 18 D. 20
34.What approach does the new system for environmental management in China adopt, according to Li Wei, a professor from Beijing Normal University
A. One-size-fits-all approach B. Extensive management approach
C. Region-specific approach D. Global management approach
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)

Adults are often embarrassed about asking for aid. It’s an act that can make people feel emotionally unsafe. 35 Seeking assistance can feel like you are broadcasting your incompetence.
New research suggests young children don’t seek help in school, even when they need it, for the same reason. Until recently, psychologists assumed that children did not start to care about their reputation and their friends’
thoughts about them until around age nine.
But our research suggests that as early as age seven, children begin to connect asking for help with looking incompetent in front of others. At some point, every child struggles in the classroom. 36
To learn more about how children think about reputation, we created simple stories and then asked children questions about these situations to allow kids to showcase their thinking.
Across several studies, we asked 576 children, ages four to nine, to predict the behavior of two kids in a story. One of the characters genuinely wanted to be smart, and the other merely wanted to seem smart to others. In one study, we told children that both kids did poorly on a test. 37 The four-year-olds were equally likely to choose either of the two kids as the one who would seek help. But by age seven or eight, children thought that the kid who wanted to seem smart would be less likely to ask for assistance. And children’s expectations were truly “reputational” in nature-they were specifically thinking about how the characters would act in front of others. When assistance could be sought privately (on a computer rather than in person), children thought both characters were equally likely to ask for it.
38 Teachers could give children more opportunities to seek assistance privately. They should also help students realize asking questions in front of others as normal, positive behavior. 39 Parents could point out how a child’s question kicked off a valuable conversation in which the entire family got to talk and learn together. Adults could praise kids for seeking assistance. These responses send a strong signal that other people value a willingness to ask for aid and that seeking help is part of a path to success.
A.Kids could be afraid to ask their parents for help.
B.Seeking help could even be taught as socially desirable.
C.In another study we told them that only one kid did poorly.
D.Such reputational barriers likely require reputation-based solutions.
E.The moment you ask for directions, after all, you reveal that you are lost.
F.But if they are afraid to ask for help because their classmates are watching, learning will suffer.
G.We then asked which of these characters would be more likely to raise their hand in front of their class to ask the teacher for help.
第三部分 书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。
Most companies use advertising to promote their brands, sell their products, and increase their income. For years, businesses have used different strategies in advertising to sell their products or services through written or visual messages.
When creating advertisements, companies tend to design some parts that appeal to our emotions or can be connected to our own lives. This is called memorable advertising. Our brains often pay attention to those parts that appeal to our emotions and forget about the rest of the information we see. So, one way to make memorable advertising is by adding an emotional or personal aspect to the most important part of the advertisement. As a result, there is a greater chance that viewers will remember that. If the scenes that appeal to our emotions manage to, at the same time, highlight the brand and its benefits, viewers will be more likely to build a connection with the brand, which can increase sales.
A good example is an advertisement from a leading consumer goods company. The advertisement showed people of all ages and from all parts of the world. In the advertisement, an artist drew pictures of what people thought they looked like—and compared those pictures to pictures of what their friends thought they looked like. This showed that people often perceive themselves negatively compared with reality—usually people criticize their looks too much. The advertisement encouraged people to see the positives in their looks, rather than the negatives. In this way, the advertisement triggered very strong emotional responses, achieved attention worldwide, and so made more people remember it.
Another way to make memorable advertising is by creating a fictional character that represents the brand. Think of the Michelin Man. The human-like figure consists of stacked white tires. The mascot gives customers a friendly, fun personality to connect and build a relationship with. It is much easier to connect with the friendly fat man than with a faceless tire company.
40. What is memorable advertising

41. According to the passage, what are the two ways to make memorable advertising

42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
In the advertisement of a leading consumer goods company, it encouraged people to see their negative aspects and triggered very strong emotional responses.

43. Are you usually influenced by advertisements when you go shopping Why or why not (In about 40 words)

Gigantopithecus blacki extinct after failure to adapt to environmental changes
Chinese, Australian and US researchers have revealed more about the extinction of the Gigantopithecus blacki great ape in their latest joint study, which was published in Nature on Thursday. The study found that Gigantopithecus blacki became extinct between 295,000 and 215,000 years ago due to being unable to adapt its
food preferences and behavior, as well as being vulnerable to the changing climate, the Global Times learned from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
"The story of Gigantopithecus blacki is an enigma in paleontology - how could such a mighty creature go extinct at a time when other primates were adapting and surviving The unresolved cause of its disappearance has become a mystery in the field," said Zhang Yingqi, a Chinese paleontologist from the IVPP and co-lead author of the study.
Then, using trace element and dental microwear mark textural analysis (DMTA) of the ape's teeth, the team built a comparison model between when it was flourishing and when it was
close to extinction.
Orangutans (genus Pongo) - a close relative of Gigantopithecus blacki - adapted in size, behavior and habitat preferences as conditions changed.

This system establishes comprehensive environmental goals for different regions to meet, while also allowing for flexibility in implementing measures that are tailored to local conditions.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Adults are often embarrassed about asking for aid. It’s an act that can make people feel emotionally unsafe. 35 Seeking assistance can feel like you are broadcasting your incompetence.
New research suggests young children don’t seek help in school, even when they need it, for the same reason. Until recently, psychologists assumed that children did not start to care about their reputation and their friends’ thoughts about them until around age nine.
In one
study, we told children that both kids did poorly on a test.
【答案】35.E 36.F 37.G 38.D 39.B

第三部分 书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。
Most companies use advertising to promote their brands, sell their products, and increase their income. For years, businesses have used different strategies in advertising to sell their products or services through written or visual messages.
When creating advertisements, companies tend to design some parts that appeal to our emotions or can be connected to our own lives. This is called memorable advertising. Our brains often pay attention to those parts that
appeal to our emotions and forget about the rest of the information we see.
参考范文
Dear Jim,
How is it going We plan to form a research-based learning group. I wonder whether you would like to join
us.
Our topic is “A Study on the Differences between British English and American English". We mainly focus on their differences in terms of spelling, pronunciation and vocabulary. The aim is to make us familiar with the underlying causes and effects of the differences so that we can gain a better understanding of the English language.
I know you are a native speaker of British English and you lived in America for several years, so hopefully you can give us some guidance during the research process. Please inform me of your decision by this Friday.
Your involvement will add much joy to our group. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
