Chinese auto industry hits milestones in 2023, in vivid show of high-quality development
China's vehicle industry reached milestones in 2023, with record production and sales, according to industry data released on Thursday, paving the way for the country to potentially become the world's largest car exporter. The momentous development of China's auto industry is a vivid display of not only the success of China's industrial upgrading, but also the country's vast potential for high-quality development, experts noted. It also offered a powerful rebuttal to narratives of "China economy collapsing" or "China peaking," which are prevalent in the Western world, they said.
China's car output exceeded 30.16 million units in 2023, up 11.6 percent year-on-year, and sales exceeded 30.09 million units, up 12 percent, according to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). Both output and sales set new records, according to the CAAM. Cui Dongshu,
secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association, said that the record numbers were a milestone for the Chinese auto industry, but more importantly, underscored vast potential. "The total output and sales figures set new records and also represented the new space for development, which has increased our expectations for market growth and the potential for promoting consumption," Cui told the Global Times on Thursday.
Also crucially, China's auto exports hit 4.91 million, up a whopping 58 percent year-on-year, the CAAM data showed. With such robust figures, China is expected to become the world's biggest car exporter. "It took China 55 years to increase the number of automobile exports from one to 1 million. In 2021, they exceeded 2 million, and in 2023, they reached 4.91 million, approaching 5 million," Fu Bingfeng, executive vice president and secretary-general of the CAAM, was quoted by China Media Group as saying.
Since its start in 1953, China's auto industry has achieved one milestone after another. In 1956, China's first domestically made Jiefang truck rolled off the production line, ending the long history of China being unable to make cars. In 2009, output and sales both exceeded 10 million for the first time, surpassing the US to be the world's biggest car producer and seller, a title China has held for 15 years.
Before 2023, Japan was the world's biggest auto exporter, but data during the year showed that China had overtaken Japan to become the world's top car exporter. With an impressive number of 4.91 million in car exports for the full year, many believe that China surpassed Japan in 2023. Li Yong, a senior research fellow at the China Association of International Trade, said that the record production and sales figures also represented a milestone for China's entire manufacturing industry. "The development of the auto industry is a crucial indicator of a country's manufacturing capabilities and its overall strength," Li told the Global Times on Thursday, noting that the rise of China's auto industry is a microcosm of the rise of China's advanced manufacturing industry and its overall national strength. More than just record production and sales numbers, China's auto industry is steadily rising to the top in terms of technologies, particularly in the new-energy vehicle (NEV) industry, experts noted.
In 2023, China exported 1.203 million NEVs, up 77.6 percent year-on-year, according to the CAAM. China became the world's largest source for patents in the area of electric vehicle powertrain batteries in the second quarter of 2023, according to GlobalData, an industry data provider. In September, Chinese NEV makers dominated an auto show in Munich, Germany, drawing global headlines. In the fourth quarter of 2023, Chinese carmaker BYD Co overtook US-based Tesla Inc to become the world's biggest electric carmaker. The rise of the NEV industry is a microcosm of the achievements made in China's upgrade of its vast manufacturing industry, export sector and domestic market - all crucial to China's high-quality development, experts said.
Li said that China's robust NEV sector also propelled the country's pursuit of renewable energies and green development, and supported the upgrade of China's export industry. "NEVs became one of the top 'new three items' of China's exports, with the other two being batteries and solar panels. It also highlighted China's booming digital economy and high-quality development," Li said.
28.What milestones did China's vehicle industry achieve in 2023, according to the industry data released on Thursday

C. Overtaking the US as the world's biggest car exporter.
D. Achieving breakthroughs in electric vehicle technologies.
29.What is the significance of China's auto industry reaching milestones in 2023, according to experts
A. It indicates China's decline in industrial upgrading.
B. It suggests China's potential for high-quality development.
C. It highlights China's struggle with economic collapse.
D. It confirms China's decline in the global car market.
30.What area of China's auto industry showed significant progress in 2023, and how is it considered a microcosm of China's overall achievements
A. Traditional car production; it reflects China's advanced manufacturing industry.

WATER BATTERIES
The machines that turn Tennessee’s Raccoon Mountain into one of the world’s largest energy storage devices—in effect, a battery that can power a medium-size city—are hidden in a cathedral-size cavern deep inside the mountain. But what enables the mountain to store all that energy is plain in an aerial photo. The summit plateau is occupied by a large lake that hangs high above the Tennessee River, so close it looks like it might fall in.
Almost half a century ago, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the region’s federally owned electric utility, built the lake and blasted out the cavern as well as a 329-meter-tall shaft that links the two. “It was quite an
effort to drill down into this mountain, because of the amount of rock that’s here,” senior manager Holli Hess says dryly. The cavern holds a candy-colored powerhouse, filled with cherry-red electrical ducts and vents and beams in a pale grape. Four giant cylinders, painted bright green and yellow, are the key machines: Each one houses a turbine that becomes a pump when it spins the other way, and a generator that is also an electric motor.
At night, when demand for electricity is low but TVA’s nuclear reactors are still humming, TVA banks the excess, storing it as gravitational potential energy in the summit lake. The pumps draw water from the Tennessee and shoot it straight up the 10-meter-wide shaft at a rate that would fill an Olympic pool in less than 6 seconds. During the day, when demand for electricity peaks, water drains back down the shaft and spins the turbines, generating 1700 megawatts of electricity—the output of a large power plant, enough to power 1 million homes. The lake stores enough water and thus enough energy to do that for 20 hours.
Pumped storage hydropower, as this technology is called, is not new. Some 40 U.S. plants and hundreds around the world are in operation. Most, like Raccoon Mountain, have been pumping for decades.
But the climate crisis is sparking a fresh surge of interest. Shifting the electric grid away from coal and gas will require not only a lot more solar panels and wind turbines, but also a lot more capacity to store their intermittent output—to keep electricity reliable when the Sun doesn’t shine and winds are calm. Giant versions of the lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles are also being deployed on the grid, but they’re too expensive to do the job alone. Dozens of new technologies, including different battery designs, are at various points on the road from lab bench to commercialization.
Pumped storage, however, has already arrived; it supplies more than 90% of existing grid storage. China, the world leader in renewable energy, also leads in pumped storage, with 66 new plants under construction, according to Global Energy Monitor. When the giant Fengning plant near Beijing switches on its final two turbines this year, it will become the world’s largest, both in terms of power, with 12 turbines that can generate 3600 megawatts, and energy storage, with nearly 40,000 megawatt-hours in its upper reservoir.
31.What is the primary purpose of the machines hidden in Raccoon Mountain
A. To generate electricity. B. To extract minerals.
C. To pump water into the lake. D. To create a large cavern.
32.What is the function of the large lake on the summit plateau of Raccoon Mountain
A. To provide water for the Tennessee River. B. To cool the machinery inside the mountain.
C. To serve as an Olympic-size swimming pool. D. To store gravitational potential energy.
33.What sets pumped storage hydropower apart from giant lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles for grid storage
A. Pumped storage is more expensive.
B. Pumped storage uses turbines and generators.
C. Lithium-ion batteries are not suitable for grid storage.
D. Lithium-ion batteries are more environmentally friendly.
34.What is the main purpose of the pumps mentioned in the article in relation to Raccoon Mountain's energy storage process
A. To drain water from the Tennessee River.
B. To fill the lake with water during the day.
C. To generate electricity during the night.
D. To propel water up the shaft for energy storage.

Once upon a time, we were all question-asking experts. We started asking our parents numerous questions as kids. By preschool, our inquiries even reached the depths of science, philosophy, and the social order. Where does the sun go at night Why doesn’t that man have a home like we do Why do rocks sink but ice floats 35
Why does the child’s urge to ask questions grow inactive in so many adults An important factor is how the social environments surrounding us change as we age. Schools transform from a place for asking questions to one funded by our ability to answer them. 36 And we recognize that society rewards the people who propose to have the answers.
37 We can be braver about asking questions in public and encouraging others to pursue their curiosity, too. In that encouragement, we help create an environment where those around us feel safe to ask questions.
When it comes to how we phrase questions, we are advised to open with less sensitive questions, favor follow-up questions, and keep questions open-ended. We can also practice asking questions of and for ourselves by keeping a running list of questions in a journal. 38 Finally, we could set aside time to ask absurd questions like “How would you accomplish a week’s work in two hours ” This type of questions forces us to break the boundaries of our comfort zone.
In the world that does not look much as it did years ago, we must ask questions. 39 Great questions can open up our capacity to change because they allow us to draw people in, opening them up to sharing knowledge, ideas, and opinions. And they are also our primary means of learning about the world. In short, asking questions is the best way to deepen our understanding of the things that matter to our life. As any child could probably tell us if we asked.
A.Then, at some point, our inquiring desires disappear.
B.It is a high-payoff behavior especially in times of change.
C.The questions we ask depend on our attitudes as well as the situations.
D.But as we grow up, asking questions fills us with worry and self-doubt.
E.As such, one way to renew our inquiring spirit is to change the atmosphere.
F.We learn to sell ourselves on the job market by what we know, not what we don’t.
G.It not only removes the publicity from question asking, but offers us a place to experiment.

Upgrade your problems
In 2017, I spent all my money buying my first flat—which meant I had no money to fix my first homeowner's problem. I was sleeping on an air mattress because I couldn't afford furniture. Then I noticed a leaky pipe under the bath, which created a wet puddle (水坑). I couldn't afford a plumber (水管工) but I didn't want to introduce myself to the neighbour by crashing through their wet ceiling.
The only option left for me was that I had to solve the problem on my own. I took the bus to a nearby store and talked with the nice guy behind the counter. He explained how to fix it and sold me a pipe cutter and a bit of pipework. I went back home, pushed my head under the bath, and got the job done.
It taught me a lesson that has since become a bit of motto for me: Upgrade your problems.
Having a wet bathroom floor is a problem—and the day before I bought the place, I would have had a landlord to call. But once the place was mine, this became my problem. I saw this as progress: You must own your own property to take care of this sort of situation.
Years later, when I founded my professional services company with my business partner, Adam, this motto became core to how we approach the business. There have been many problems, and there will continue to be new
ones. However, we remember the reason we have these problems—it's because we run our own business! A late-paying customer is a problem, but it's one we encounter only if we have paying customers.
That is why I still keep the pipe cutter on my desk today. It reminds me that, no matter my level of frustration (挫败), I am fortunate to face the problems I do. The more I solve them, the more I upgrade to even better ones.
40. What did the author notice in his first flat
41. How did the author solve his problem with the bath
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The author still keeps the pipe cutter on his desk today because it reminds him of his success in business.
43. What else would you do when you encounter problems in life (In about 40 words)

11.styles 12.what 13.were inspired
故填what。
故填were inspired。
14.found 15.has declined 16.Rising 17.when
故填has declined。
Rising。
when it comes to是固定短语,意为“当谈到”,因此空格处是when。故填when。
18.but/yet/while 19.under/beneath 20.where
结合句意可知,前后句是转折关系,可用连词but/yet/while连接,故填but/yet/while。
根据“about 30 centimeters of snow”可知,此处指“在30厘米厚的雪下面”,用介词under或beneath。故填under/beneath。

Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association, said that the record numbers were a milestone for the Chinese auto industry, but more importantly, underscored vast potential.
Li Yong, a senior research fellow at the China
Association of International Trade, said that the record production and sales figures also represented a milestone for China's entire manufacturing industry.

30.What area of China's auto industry showed significant progress in 2023, and how is it considered a microcosm
of China's overall achievements

“It was quite an effort to drill down into this mountain, because of the amount of rock that’s here,” senior manager Holli Hess says dryly.

There have been many problems, and there will continue to be new ones.
