A few years ago, I was an English professor, and I asked my students to finish a paper during the holiday. Mike, one of my students, came to class without it. He explained that his safe (保险柜)had been stolen by a worker who was repairing his house. His notebook computer was in the safe, where his paper was. I was sure that he didn’t tell a lie because he had been a really good student.
Then over the two weeks, Mike started to show up to class looking very tired. He said that he was on a hunt for the guy who stole his safe, and he was spending late nights with his cousin driving around looking for the thief because they knew his car. They wanted to find the thief and get the safe back because his living expenses were in it besides the paper.
Then Mike rewrote the paper and turned it in. It wasn’t up to his usual quality, and he still kept coming to class looking like he hadn’t slept all night. One day, he came very happily to my office, and he reported that he had found the thief after a long search that involved experiencing dangerous situations. He said that they found the thief’s car in front of a big super-market, and they caught him and sent him to the police station.
I read the news that Mike had in fact put an end to the thief’s attempt to steal from the supermarket. It turned out that Mike got his money and notebook computer back. I gladly accepted his original paper, and it got a much higher grade than the rewritten one because of his virtues. And I reminded him that he should be responsible for his own safety and talk to me or other teachers first if he met with anything like that.
24. What was the problem with Mike
A. He was often late for class.
B. He always got low marks in exams.
C. He failed to hand in his paper on time.
D. He stayed up too late writing his paper.
25. What did Mike do at night over the two weeks

B. He practised driving with his cousin.
C. He went to the class which the professor taught.
D. He sought for the house repairman who had stolen his safe.
26. What happened to the thief finally
A. He voluntarily admitted the theft.
B. He was handed over to the police.
C. He escaped from a big supermarket.
D. He was reported caught by the professor.
27. Which words best describe Mike
A. Brave and honest. B. Imaginative and creative.
C. Smart but lazy. D. Poor but happy.

Plastic surgery (整形手术) is not only popular in the US, but is also spreading across Asia. It is reported that South Korea is now the world’s largest market for plastic surgery.
In order to change their looks, 20 percent of women aged between 19 and 49 in Seoul said they had gone under the knife. The growth of South Korea’s pop music industry increases the popularity. Many patients visit clinics with photos of singers, asking doctors to copy their noses or eyes.
Joo Kwon, who founded one of the largest clinics in Seoul, recently opened a hotel to better serve customers. People will spend about $ 17,675 in a single visit. An increasing number of customers are non-Koreans, from China, Japan, the Middle East and even Africa. Leaders in South Korea say that this will help the Korean economy.
However, Mr. Kwon warned that young people should be careful when taking such operations. “I think South Korea doesn’t understand the word ‘beauty’, because everyone looks pretty much the same. It is also related to low self-confidence. I think the situation will somewhat become better in the future as the society becomes more different. But it will take quite a bit of time until we get there,” he told reporters.
Last year, a booklet (小册子) was given out to Korean high school students by the government. There was a story that a local woman who was crazy about plastic surgery ended up with an ugly face.
What is the main cause of the increase in plastic surgery in South Korea
A. The increasing understanding of beauty. B. The increasing number of clinics.
C. The rise of the pop music industry. D. The rise of the Korean economy.
29. What is Mr. Kwon’s attitude toward plastic surgery

B. high school students are encouraged to have plastic surgery
C. high school students in South Korea are fond of plastic surgery
D. plastic surgery is bad for people’s health

Bananas have happy superpower. Here’s the science, from a researcher who specializes in the links between nutrition and mood. Ninety percent of Americans say they eat bananas at least once a month, which are followed by apples, making them the most popular fruit in the U.S. Not only are bananas delicious in healthy banana bread and smoothies; but eaten alone, bananas are packed with healthy vitamins and nutrients. Among its various benefits, this sunny yellow fruit has a happy superpower: it can serve as an important mood-booster.
“Due to the state of the world right now, a lot of people are having problems with stress, anxiety, depression, burnout and sleeplessness,”says Shawn Talbott, Ph.D, a nutritional biochemist who specializes in researching the links between nutrition and mood. If you can relate, Dr. Talbott offers his understanding into why our love for bananas is a bright spot in the American diet.
Dr. Talbott explains the main reason bananas may be the basic mood food: one banana contains 20 percent of your recommended daily allowance of vitamin B6. This vitamin is scientifically shown to reduce depression and anxiety, better the effects of stress, and improve mood overall, according to a 2019 study of how B vitamins affect mood, published in Nature.
The trick is vitamin B6’s power to produce serotonin (血清素), a powerful brain neurotransmitter, which is nicknamed the “happy hormone (荷尔蒙).” Dr. Talbott adds that bananas are also high in prebiotic fiber and potassium (钾), which are other nutrients linked to a good mood.
In fact, people who ate a diet higher in potassium showed less depression and a better mood overall, according to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition. Dr. Talbott explains that vitamins, including B6, are one way to help support your body and mind in dealing with all of problems.
32. What are the most popular fruit in the U.S.
A. Pears. B. Bananas. C. Oranges. D. Apples.
33. What problems people are facing according to the text

34. From paragraph 3 and 4, we can learn that.

C. eating bananas can help us become healthier.D. eating bananas can help us become happier.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
