I first visited the UK on a vacation as a curious 15-year-old in 2013. The rich culture of London, the beautiful highlands of Scotland and the sunny beaches of Wales deeply attracted me. I decided then that I wanted to carry on my university education in the UK.
Fast forward to 2016 and I arrived at the University of Bristol. The first couple of weeks were great. But after my first month, I started missing my parents, my little sister, the food and the warm, sunny weather.
There was also another problem. Having always studied an Indian curriculum (课程), which is objective, learning based and strict, I found it difficult to adjust to several aspects of the British education system. The freedom of choosing which lectures (课) to go to, the highly subjective and thought-encouraging discussions at tutorials (辅导课) and a large amount of reading I was expected to do caught me off-guard.
It was not until my first end of term exams were over in January 2017 that I could slow down and think carefully about the things that I was doing wrong and the things that I got right. The week after my exams ended, I realized how little time I had spent outside the university libraries and my living place.
So I tried new cafes in Clifton, and going for walks near the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge. I also started watching British TV shows. And I evolved socially too. I finally found the societies I wanted to join. I also realized the importance of staying in touch with my tutors and not being afraid of needing and asking for help. I made some amazing fiends in Bristol. Had it not been for the people around me, my first year would not have been as good as it was.
Overall, my second term ended on a much more relaxed and happier note than the first. I wrote my final exams in May and, before I knew it, I had finished my first year of university.

26.Which of the following did the author consider important for her after her first exams
A.Staying in touch with her family.
B.Spending time at the library.
C.Building strong relationships.

27.What would be the best title for the text
A.The UK is a wise choice for studying abroad
B.My first experience of culture shock
C.Education is the key to success
D.My first year as an international student
C
At the beginning of every school year, I feared coming home with the heavy homework of the first day after a summer of fun. And I feared getting another teacher who had a long list of rules and a stare that could kill a cat.
But there was always one part of beginning a new school year that I enjoyed. I always liked going to the store to arm myself with new school supplies—even if I didn’t need them.
Sure, my pencils, erasers and notebooks from the previous school year may have had some life left in them. But this didn’t matter. Every year, Dad would pile us into the car, take us to Wal-Mart and let us buy the newest and coolest pencils, rainbow-coloured erasers and spiral notebooks.
Besides school supplies, many parents also take their kids on annual shopping spree for new clothes and book bags just in time for school. During the whole process, children are in high spirits, buying a lot of stuff and are back home exhausted.
Every year, most of my classmates and I show up to school on the first day with something smelling like a new car. We’d put our new stationery(文具) on top of the desks, just to make sure others see them.
Leftover supplies from past years were always stuffed into the living room desk. Used clothes that had lost their appeal were sent to second-hand shops, where they would be sold for 50 cents a piece.
However, all of the new stuff could only make us excited about going to school for one week, after which the usual boredom and fear come back.
28.What is NOT TRUE about the author at the beginning of a new school year in the passage
A.He often has to face a new teacher.
B.He doesn’t enjoy the load of work from school.
C.He doesn’t appreciate strict teachers.

29.Why do the students look forward to getting new pencils every year
A.Because the old ones are used up.
B.Because it’s required by the school.
C.Because they want to show their new stuff off.
D.Because new pencils help them to study better.
30.The underlined word “spree” in the passage probably means _________.
A.competition B.wild celebration
C.emotional pain D.considerable embarrassment
31.How are the old supplies dealt with
A.They are put aside and forgotten. B.They are given to poorer children.
C.They are sold online . D.They are treasured by the students.

The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, Choquequirao is 161km west of Cusco. It’s an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina where tourists camp for the night. Waking early, tourists then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. The next morning, it’s another 2km walk up to the ruins, 3,100m above sea level. To get back Well, it’s the same way you come.
“I’ve had people in their 60s and 70s do it,” said Juan Barrios, a guide from the Adventure Life company. “But some people come out thinking that because it’s only 28km from the destination, they can do it in a day. They are totally wrong! Six or seven days for the hike is best.” It makes sense then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season (June through pare that to the 2, 500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu. But for those who make the journey, the rewards are great: beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu, in 1445, Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru’s other lost city and researchers are still unearthing new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of its unique scenery and civilization. Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710, the ruins still make you feel as though you’re the first to find them. The question is what if more tourists flood in (大量涌入) in the future.
32.What does the first paragraph center on
A.The height of Choquequirao. B.The hard trip to Choquequirao.
C.The transport to Choquequirao. D.The amazing views of Choquequirao.
33.According to the author, how many days for the hike is best
A.1 day B.2-3 days C.4-5 days D.6 or 7 days
34.In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu
A.Choquequirao is older.
B.Choquequirao is smaller.
C.Choquequirao is quieter.
D.Choquequirao is better known.
35.What is the author’s attitude towards Choquequirao’s future
A.Positive. B.Concerned. C.Negative. D.Indifferent.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。(如果所用的答题卡没有E、F、G选项,则选E涂A、B,选F涂A、C,选G涂A、D。)
Most of us think we have very little time, but the truth is that we actually have a lot — on average, five hours 49 minutes each day, which means we typically have somewhere between 36 and 40 hours available to be spent every week however we want. So why don’t we feel time — rich _____36_____
One is that we earn more, so time feels more expensive. Then there’s the way we’ve come to see busyness as a status symbol: important people are busy, so we want to be busy, too. Add to that the flood of incoming emails and texts, along with the endless ocean of possibilities, and it’s easy to see where time goes.
A second factor is the comparison we make between what we can do and what others are doing, making us anxious. ____37____ This fools us into thinking we’re being more productive with our work time, so we try to do it with our leisure time, too. When we’re playing with our kids, we check Facebook. When we’re hanging out with one group of friends, we post pictures to show another._____38_____
We’re also addicted to our devices. In 2007, the amount of leisure time we spent on devices like smart-phones could be measured in minutes. Now, we spend on average 3.5 hours a day online. _____39_____
You might be wondering why you need help deciding how to spend your free time — after all you know the sort of things you enjoy, so what could be so difficult Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has a surprising opinion on it. “The popular assumption is that no skills are involved in enjoying free time, anybody can do it. Yet the evidence suggests the opposite; free time is more difficult to enjoy than work.” Worryingly, scientists have found that people are often no happier after a holiday than if they’d never taken one. ____40____ The question still remains unsettled.
A. This is something sociologists call “polluted time”.
B. So we try to push back the tide and keep up by multi-tasking.
C. No wonder people say they’re too busy to see friends, exercise or sleep.
D. Would it surprise you to hear that we have more leisure time today than ever
E. How can we learn to spend time in a way that’s more likely to lead to happiness and success
F. It’s something that economists have been puzzling over and they’ve identified several reasons.
G. Then you will have fewer empty experiences and far more that are worthy of your precious time.

Make winter Holiday More meaningful
Winter holiday is coming. For many, the true meaning of winter holiday lies in spending time with loved ones and sharing traditions. For some of us students, we can choose to go about this differently, thus making a difference to others. From providing food for people in need to assisting in a nursing home, there are many wonderful things for us to do. In fact, there are many great organizations that love having volunteers during this holiday! Besides, you can encourage your neighbors and friends to organize an interesting activity for the whole community.
Make this winter holiday more meaningful and you’ll see that the world is becoming much better!
