US forests could become a "substantial carbon source" by 2070, suggesting that forests could worsen global warming instead of easing it, a new Agriculture Department report says.
US forests currently absorb 11 percent of US carbon emissions (释放), equal to the combined emissions from 40 coal power plants. The report predicts that the ability of forests to absorb carbon will start declining after 2025 and that forests could emit up to 100 million metric tons of carbon a year as their emissions from decaying (腐烂) trees go beyond their carbon absorption.
The prediction suggests that this will require the US to cut emissions more rapidly to reach net zero, according to Lynn Riley, a senior manager of climate science. "Eleven percent of our domestic emissions. That is a really significant portion," Riley said. "As we work to decarbonize... forests are one of the greatest tools available. If we were to lose that, it means the US will contribute that much more" in emissions. The report also assesses and predicts the extent of renewable resources provided by the nation's forests and undeveloped landscapes, including farmlands, wetlands and grasslands.
According to the report, the loss of carbon absorption is driven in part by natural disasters which are increasing in frequency and strength as global temperatures rise. Development in forested areas, which the report predicts will continue to increase, is having the same effect as people increasingly move to the so-called wildland urban areas. Aging forests also contribute as older, mature trees absorb less carbon than younger trees of the same species, and the US forests are rapidly aging.
More aggressive forest management can help by cutting down a small portion of aging forests to make ways for younger trees that absorb more carbon. A thorough study of each forest should be done before removing older trees, Riley said.
1.Why could US forests become a "substantial carbon source"
A.They fail to absorb enough carbon.
B.They begin to emit carbon increasingly.
C.They may emit more carbon than absorb.
D.Mature trees outnumber young trees.
2.Which of the following may Lynn Riley agree with
A.US forests have lost their role in carbon absorption.
B.It is urgent for the US to reduce carbon emissions.
C.The US has contributed to 11% carbon emissions.
D.The loss of forests contributes to less carbon emissions.
3.What leads to the loss of carbon absorption
A.Improper tree species.
B.Removal of aging trees.
C.Decreasing urban development.
D.Frequent severe natural disasters.
4.Which could be a suitable title for the text
A.Aging Forests —a Major Emitter of Carbon.
B.Growing Forests —a Solution to Carbon Emissions.
C.Reducing Forests —a Threat to Global Warming.
D.Decaying Forests —a Consequence of Global Warming.

During the past several years, fake news has been a frequent topic of real news, with articles considering the role of social media in spreading fake news. Something less well-known, though, is that fake news has also become a topic of scientific investigation.
In a paper published in March in the journal Science, David Lazer, Matthew Baum and 14 co-authors consider what we do and don't know about the science of fake news. They define fake news as "made-up information that imitates news in form but not in process or intention".
The paper makes a persuasive case that the investigation of fake news is timely and important. One conservative (保守的) estimate is that in the month before the 2016 election, the average American was exposed to somewhere between one and three articles from a known publisher of fake news. Another alarming result is that when it comes to political topics, tweets containing false information spread more rapidly and broadly on Twitter than those containing reliable information.
Researchers mentioned in the paper that in the face of fake news and its spreading by social and other forms of media, "A new system of safeguards is needed." But what kinds of safeguards can individual news consumers put into place The simplistic answer is "be more reflective". Don't believe everything you read, but consider the possibility that it's false. We need to foster standards of discussion in which it's OK to challenge what others say without the conversation immediately turning into abuse. The most effective lab meetings are like that: If someone disagrees with the presenter, they say so in a polite way. And by doing so, they might be saving the presenter from embarrassment in a more public forum. A community that encourages individuals to point out when statements are false or unclear benefits everybody by helping detect the truth.
In the long run, the truth will win out. Our preferred society encourages the truth to win out before great damage is done.
5.What can we infer from the third paragraph
A.The investigation proved fake news is persuasive.
B.The spread of fake news has become an alarming issue.
C.The use of social media might help fake news to spread.
D.Fake news on political topics received more attention.
6.What safeguard is suggested to individuals according to the passage
A.Reflecting on what you read.
B.Neglecting the false information.
C.Challenging what others say.
D.Helping others detect the truth.
7.What is the author's attitude to the future of news
A.Skeptical. B.Unclear. C.Indifferent. D.Optimistic.
8.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A.Do Not Believe in Everything
B.The Truth Will Finally Win Out
C.The Truth About Fake News
D.The Spreading of Fake News

The rhino census (犀牛普查) is out, bearing good news for the greater one-horned rhinos! In September, 2022, the International Rhino Foundation (IRF) documented in a report that there is a baby boom in this population, representing an increase of 167 percent.
According to the report, there are a total of 4,014 greater one-homed rhinos living m India, Nepal, and Bhutan. Although this is positive news, their IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) status still remains vulnerable.
In India alone, the home to 70 percent of the world's greater one-homed rhinos, there was an increase of 274 rhinos since the last bi-annual census, according to the organization Rhino Review.
An important reason for this baby boom is the fact that Assam, India, has enlarged Kaziringo National Park, home to the world's largest one-homed rhino population. The park went from 430 square kilometers to 1,040 square kilometers. This gives more breeding areas for the things, and they are closed to visitors during breeding season.
India and Nepal are also protecting the rhinos by enforcing wildlife crime laws. To reduce rhino death by poaching (偷猎), the IRF donates vehicles and equipment, plus education including guard training and crime investigation.
The IRF data for other rhino species is not as promising, although the greater one-horned rhino numbers are encouraging for future conservation. According to the report, there is a decline in Sumatran rhinos, Africa's white rhinos, while the Javan rhino population is stable and threatened by loss of habitat.
The State of the Rhino report offers hope for these other species. Given that the greater one-horned things were once close to extinction, with fewer than 100 living in the world, their recovery is incredible. This demonstrates that there are solutions when organizations and people work together. It is hoped that this successful rhino baby boom will affect other endangered wildlife species around the globe.
9.What contributes to the baby boom of one-homed rhinos in Assam, India
A.Extending the protected areas for rhinos.
B.Raising fund to set up more reserves for rhinos.
C.Leaving the one-homed rhinos alone in the wild.
D.Keeping visitors away from the Kaziringo National Park.
10.IRF helps protect the one-homed rhinos mainly by .
A.Cooperating with other organizations.
B.Enhancing anti-poaching efforts.
C.Transferring the rhinos to other habitats.
D.Guarding the rhinos with new equipment.
11.What can we learn from the rhino report
A.Rhinos are no longer a vulnerable species.
B.Rhinos will affect other wildlife in the world.
C.Everyone can play a role in protecting nature.
D.It is possible to protect other endangered species.
12.What is the purpose of this text
A.To inform good news on the greater one-horned rhinos.
B.To show the measures of the greater one-homed rhinos.
C.To introduce an endangered species-the greater one-homed rhinos.
D.To indicate the decline of other species of rhino population.
Russia is launching a new module (舱) for the International Space Station(ISS), after more than a decade of delays. The Nauka module is set to lift off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on top of a Proton-M rocket at around 15:00 GMT today, along with a new robotic arm for the station created by the European Space Agency.

More than 11,000 scientists are warning that the Earth, in their words, "clearly and decidedly faces a climate emergency". The scientists represent diverse fields of study and come from countries around the world. They approved a report that appeared in the publication BioScience. The new report, titled "World Scientists' Warning of a Climate Emergency", warned that the world will face "untold human suffering" if it does not make deep and lasting shifts in human activity that influences climate change.
This is the first time a large group of scientists have jointly used the word "emergency" when talking about climate change. "Despite 40 years of global climate negotiations… we have generally conducted business as usual and have largely failed to address this predicament," the report said. "The climate crisis has arrived and is accelerating faster than most scientists expected."
The report identified six areas that the world needs to deal with immediately. The scientists appealed to nations to use energy more efficiently and cut their use of fossil(化石) fuels. They suggested that lawmakers approve taxes on the burning of carbon-based fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas. The scientists expressed support for women's rights and "making family planning services available to all people". They said this would help to reduce sudden or unexpected changes in the size of the world population. The report urged people to move toward more of a plant-based diet. Other areas of concern included preventing the destruction of forests and permanent loss of some plant and animal species. The report noted that the public would most likely require politicians to approve lasting policy changes.
The scientists added, "We believe that prospects(前景) will be the greatest if decision makers and all of humanity promptly respond to this warning and declaration of a climate emergency, and act to sustain life on the planet Earth, our only home."
17.How should people deal with the climate emergency according to the scientists
A.Take immediate action. B.Learn about its causes.
C.Understand its influences. D.Have more global negotiations.
18.What does the underlined word "predicament" in paragraph 2 mean
A.Advocacy. B.Problem. C.Suffering. D.Business.
19.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.Cause for six areas of concern.
B.Urgent shifts in human activity.
C.Main contents of the new report.
D.Importance of using energy effectively.
20.What is the scientists' attitude toward the future of the Earth
A.Uncertain. B.Negative. C.Hopeful. D.Unworried.

US forests could become a "substantial carbon source" by 2070, suggesting that forests could worsen global warming instead of easing it, a new Agriculture Department report says." US forests currently absorb 11 percent of US carbon emissions (释放), equal to the combined emissions from 40 coal power plants. The report predicts that the ability of forests to absorb carbon will start declining after 2025 and that forests could emit up to 100 million metric tons of carbon a year as their emissions from decaying (腐烂) trees go beyond their carbon absorption.("美国森林目前吸收了美国11%的碳排放量,相当于40个燃煤发电厂的总排放量。
The prediction suggests that this will require the US to cut emissions more rapidly to reach net zero, according to Lynn Riley, a senior manager of climate science."
According to the report, the loss of carbon absorption is driven in part by natural disasters which are increasing in frequency and strength as global temperatures rise."
US forests could become a "substantial carbon source" by 2070, suggesting that forests could worsen global warming instead of easing it, a new Agriculture Department report says."

The ISS is composed of modules and equipment from different space agencies including Europe, Japan and Canada, but the major part of the station is composed of two main sections, a Russian part and a US part. At 13 meters long and weighing more than 20 tonnes, Nauka, also called the Multipurpose Laboratory Module, will be among the largest in Russia's half.
After launch, Nauka will take eight days to reach the ISS. Once attached, it will act as a new centre for the Russian part of the station. "It's a science laboratory, and it also provides a lot of important service systems," says Anatoly Zak, editor of a website. Planned research includes biological and materials science experiments. "It's a step in making the Russian part more independent (from the US part)." This includes a new toilet inside the module and sleeping rooms for the crew.
The launch of Nauka has been a long time coming, with construction of the module beginning in the 1990s. Technical and supply issues since then, such as the loss of components from Ukraine following the Russian annexation (兼并) of Crimea in 2014, have seen development stumble (蹒跚而行).
