1. Eating Disorders
An eating disorder is a kind of illness in which a person does not eat in a normal or healthy way.
In the United States, restrictions for COVID-19 (新冠管控) are loosening, however eating disorder cases are on the rise. Experts warn that being alone and feeling anxious can increase the harmfulness of eating disorders.
"We are certainly seeing great increases," said Jennifer Wildes who is an associate psychiatry professor (精神病学副教授) at the University of Chicago Medicine. She told the reporter that some patients are waiting to five months to get mental health treatment and medical cares. Before COVID-19, she added, wait times were usually only a few weeks. Recently, Wildes' program treats about 100 patients. Before COVID-19, the number of patients was half that number.
Another treatment program for eating disorders at the University of Minnesota is experiencing the same thing. Daily calls to its program from people asking for treatment have doubled. In 2019, there were about 60 calls a day. "Since COVID-19 began, that number is up to 130 calls a day, "said Jillian Lampert, who is one of the leaders of the program.
Because of COVID-19, some people make themselves eat a lot as a way to deal with the feeling of "out of control". Other people are doing the opposite of things. They are taking the message of "don't gain COVID - 19 weight" too strictly. They are reducing their meals to the point of anorexia (厌食症). Bulimic (贪食) is also a kind of eating disorder. Bulimic people eat large amount of food and then force themselves to throw it up.
A study of electronic medical records from about 80 U.S. hospitals found a 30 percent increase of eating disorder starting after March 2020, compared with numbers from 2018 and 2019. The leader of the study, Dr. Dave Little said that the COVID pandemic has given society, and in particular young people, a lot of mental health difficulties.
Here are some signs of eating disorder from the U.S. National Eating Disorders Organization.
◎Thinking about weight, body size, and food too much.
◎Seem uneasy eating around others.
◎Restrictions against types of food, for example, bread or sugar.
◎Avoiding usual friends and social activities.
◎Extreme change in mood and behavior.

2. A young Chinese illustrator (插图画家),who loves traditional Chinese culture, has created many interesting drawings. The artist's online name is Jiao Xiangyue. She often posts her works on the Internet and the creative illustrations have won her more than 300, 000 fans.
Jiao's book, Da Tang Feng Su Zhi, came out in October 2018. The book, with beautiful pictures and writings, shows interesting daily lives of people in the Tang Dynasty. On the last day of 2019, Jiao posted the drawings she had created during the past year online. Since then, the illustrator and her works have caught the attention of the public.
"I'm deeply impressed by the people, culture and art of the Tang Dynasty," Jiao says. In her drawings, most people have round faces. Her best-known series include drawings of women from the Tang Dynasty and classic images (形象) from Dunhuang art. In fact, many of her drawings are based on classic paintings from the Tang Dynasty, as Jiao hopes her works will help develop people's interest in Chinese history and traditional art in this way.
Jiao pays a lot of attention to details. She has bought lots of books and studied ancient paintings to make sure she can draw things correctly. "Once a person told me that the pipa of Tang Dynasty had four or five strings (弦) while the pipa of today has only four," she says. Through her works, people will realize that images from ancient times can also be cool and cute.

3.The Sport of Concentration Every day, it seems a new gadget (设备) promises to help me increase the distance and pace I run, or the number of hours I sleep, or the rate of my heartbeats. It will make me a "better me," or so the story goes.
Maybe some of them actually help to do these things, but nonetheless, I still decided to sell all of my sports gadgets a few months ago and simply record my running times with a pen and a notepad. Soon after, I began to train for a marathon the old-fashioned way, without something on my wrist telling me my pace and current heart rate. As it turned out, running without knowing all that information was a great pleasure.
In the past, whenever I was running slower than my smartwatch said I should be, I'd force myself to speed up, even if it was clear that my body didn't want to. But this time, I ran the way I wanted to.
On more than a few occasions, when I'd look at my notepad following key workouts (锻炼),I was shocked to see that I'd had some real breakthroughs (突破),running much faster than I thought I could. I was so shocked about these numbers and thought that if I'd seen them during the workout itself, I would have probably slowed down. Yet, because I was blind to them, I just kept on running.
Another positive thing about getting rid of all my running gadgets is that it's helping me concentrate (集中注意力) more on the running itself. Since I no longer feel like I need technology to run well, I can go out and run without worrying about whether everything has enough battery power.
So, what's the lesson here?Well, we could very easily replace the example of running with writing, studying, or anything else. No matter what it is the more time we spend worrying about how to make ourselves better at something, the more our performance is affected.
Should you stop using technology to "improve" your performance?Of course, that's up to you. However, if I were to be asked that question, I'd certainly say that I'm better off without it.

Then the COVID-19 outbreak changed everything. Her company was closed and she lost her job. "I realized that I really need to rethink about my life," she said. "And then I realized I spent too much."
She wasn t alone. A study reported by a Shanghai newspaper showed that 45% of young people under 30 earned much less during the COVID-19 outbreak. Another survey taken in April showed that more than half of Chinese shoppers under 30 planned to reduce their spending and save money. Saving up has actually turned into a new lifestyle for Aijing and other young people.
She used to meet bet friends in expensive restaurants. Now they cook at home—something she never did before. She started downloading new apps on her phone to buy secondhand things. What s the biggest change Aijing is making, though In a few months, she ll move back to southern Guangxi Province to live with her parents. She expects to find a job that will pay less. But with much lower cost of living, she ll finally be able to save more.
For many young people who plan to leave big cities, it isn t exactly by choice. But Aijing is feeling positive about it. "Although I was paid well in Shanghai, it was at the cost of my life," she said. Now saving money has become a habit for her. 6.Doctors Use Scientific Tools to Repair Museum's Artworks
The conservators(修复员) at the Smithsonian American Art Museum are called "art doctors". They use scientific tools to repair the museum's artworks and often wear white lab coats. However, unlike regular doctors, their patients never shout "ouch".
"We X-ray art to see how it's made and practise preventative care," said Amber Kerr, the head of conservation. "And if something's broken, we fix it."
Kerr is one of the seven conservators who work in the museum's Lunder Conservation Center. The center opened in 2006 as the country's first conservation lab. Before then, museums hid pieces that didn't look their best and repaired them behind the scenes.
In the spirit of sharing, the museum invites visitors to watch the conservators repair artworks from their glass-walled labs on the third floor.
On a recent afternoon, Leah Bright, an objects conservator, was caring for two art pieces at her workstation. A piece of a massive sculpture(大型雕塑) was under a microscope. She pointed out holes in a small part of the aluminum foil(铝箔) that covered the artwork. "Here is the damage. We will record it and try to stop it," she said.
The other item was a stone sculpture of Venus with two broken legs. One of its owners had tried to fix the legs with metal sticks and glue, but the staff had noticed the sculpture rocking back-and-forth at the joints. "It was not safe," Bright said. To stop the swing, the conservators used a special filler. They also used the paint they mixed to match the color of the sculpture.
In another room, Keara Teeter, a painting conservator, was working on two works from William H Johnson's Fighters for Freedom series. The paintings are part of a travelling exhibit. It's planned to reach its first stop, South Carolina, in January. Teeter was preparing them for the journey by retouching areas where small pieces of the paint had come off and adding glass to the frame to protect the works from humidity, dirt, heat, etc.

(2) When did Lunder Conservation Center open

(3) What does the museum invite visitors to do in the spirit of sharing

7. It is well-known that work and play are very important for the development of the mind. Though it may be of the greatest importance for everyone to work hard, it is also necessary to relax from time to time.
Each year a survey, which takes place in about 100,000 households across the country, is carried out by the China Media Group(CMG). The CMG survey pays more attention to the happiness of Chinese people. The survey, which began in 2006, covered many areas, including spare time, holidays and spending habits.
In 2018, it was reported by the CMG that the average amount(平均数) of free time for Chinese people was 2.84 hours per day, higher than 2017's average of 2.27 hours.
This year the survey also shows what people prefer to do during their spare time. Seven in ten people enjoy surfing the Internet, while 55 percent like to watch TV and 45 percent prefer shopping. What's more interesting is that people in different provinces like to do different things. For example, people in Guangxi like reading books. Those who live in Tianjin prefer to go to a concert or movie. People in Jilin Province prefer to exercise.
In general, the survey suggests people are happier when they have more free time. Having enough free time has even become more important than income for Chinese people. However, it is still important to work as well. Working hard during part of the day makes spare time more valuable and enjoyable.
CMG has also found that over the last 10 years, Chinese people have generally become happier. In 2018, over half of Chinese people felt satisfied with their lives, the highest grade since 2009.

Last Sunday, when I was shopping, I met an old friend of mine, Betty. She was looking for something carefully. It was clear that she was not happy. I walked to her and had a short talk with her. I knew that she worked as a cashier (收银员)in a nearby store. What made her sad was that sometimes the customers were rude to her in the store. She said that it even made her a little bit nervous when she worked.
"Well, I think I can understand," I said. "You know, I was a nurse when I was 22 years old, and I had sad moments as well. Sometimes patients and their family members could be very rude, but I tried to understand them. I let the sad moments go and just try to do my job well."
She looked a little relaxed after hearing my words. "How kind and friendly a girl you are!" she said. We talked to each other and then she went to work with a big smile on her face.

But on a day after her 14th birthday, she passed out and was rushed to the hospital. The family learned that the girl had a serious heart disease and that she might die.
At night, she asked her dad," Daddy, have they told you that I am going to die "
The father replied, "No, you will live as long as anyone else."
She was curious, "How can you be sure "
He turned to her and said, "I just know it."
After the girl turned 15, she had a heart transplant(移植手术). After recovering(恢复), she came home. The first thing she saw was a letter on her bed.
It said, "My dearest daughter, if you are reading this, it means that everything went as I told you it would. One day you asked me what I would give you for your 15th birthday. I wasn't sure then. But now you know that my present to you is my heart." The father had given his heart to his daughter.

10. A retired postman from Turkey and a beautiful white swan have been always together for nearly forty years, and the story of their friendship has warmed the hearts of millions.
In 1984 Recep Mirzan was in a car with a group of friends, when he saw a swan that appeared to have a broken wing in an empty field.
Mirzan quickly realized that leaving the bird there was the same as signing its death sentence, as meat-eating animals would have most likely eaten it, so he stopped the car and took the bird with him. He kept it in the car until evening, when he took it home and started nursing it back to health.
"Since I love animals,I said to myself that I should take her home instead of leaving her as dinner to foxes,"Mirzan said," We got used to each other. We never separated."
Even after the swan's broken wing healed(痊愈), it didn't try to fly away. Instead, it acted as a friend to the other animals on Recep's farm, and decided to stick around. Recep named her Garip and now she has been with him ever since.
"She comes when I call. Since 1984, she has never left me, not even during the river floods," the retired postman said." She used to be stronger, but she has grown old now. If she dies, I will make her a nice grave(墓穴) here, but I hope we live more together."
During the day, she is busy following her human friend around, either during his daily chores, or on his evening walks.
