In our meditation (冥想) group on Monday morning, one of the ladies asked if the group leader could take us through meditation to ease worries.
Later that day, I thought that I would reach out to her just to let her know that I was there for her. I must admit all sorts of reasons why I shouldn’t reach out came to mind, but I allowed myself to get rid of my weakness and sent an email anyway.
It was through one of those messaging type things that I could see the other person was reacting. I could see that quite soon after, the lady was writing a reply. However, she must have changed her mind and decided to give it up and not send it after all.
Anyway, 2 days later, this morning, she sent me a nice message which opened up a short talk about our past and present experiences and we found a common connection. In the end, I invited her to an online group where we could meet every Sunday just to connect and chat. She promised to join us. I knew that she was glad that I had reached out.
Afterwards, I realized that I did have a new friend. When I learned about her difficult life, I offered to help her get through difficulty. When I had problems, she was always there. What a real lucky thing is to step into someone’s life situation and come together with them on their journey. I always think it is the most pleasant thing in the world! I’m so thankful to have had a new friend today!

A. To communicate regularly.
B. To replace the former activity.
C. To set up a commercial project.
D. To join the same meditation group.
7. What does the author want to express in the text

B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C. A friend without faults will never be found.
D. A friend to everybody is a friend to nobody.

If you want to become a fluent English speaker you should take some advice: There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammars or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example, in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.
8. According to the author, which should you improve first among the four skills
A. Reading and listening. B. Reading and writing.
C. Writing and speaking. D. Speaking and listening.
9. The underlined phrase “come across” in Paragraph 2 can probably be replaced by “________”.
A. meet by accident B. discover
C find on purpose D. look for
10. The author seems to agree with the view that ________.
A. everyone should listen to VOA or BBC programs every day
B. you needn’t practice listening if you keep on reading every day
C being good at reading is helpful in improving your listening
D. you should take notes of whatever you are hearing
11. The passage is mainly about how to ________.
A. choose suitable listening materials
B. deal with new words in reading
C. improve your English as quickly as possible
D. become fluent in speaking and writing English
D
One million species face extinction, more than ever before in human history, according to a UN report released in May. And humans should be responsible.
The researchers based the assessment (评估) on some 15,000 sources considering the causes and results of environmental changes over the past 50 years.
The findings are clear and alarming. The researchers have found that about 25 percent of the world’s plants and animals are at risk of extinction. These include sea and land animals. Even the domesticated (驯养的) animals are at risk: Over 9 percent of the domesticated animal species used for food and agriculture might have been lost.
There are some big problems. This rapid decrease of the natural world endangers global food safety and quality of life. For example, about 4 billion people rely on natural medicines, produced by the disappearing species, for their health care.
The researchers identified five drivers responsible for the bad news. They think at the top of the list is the change of land and sea use. The change in ecosystems towards agriculture, aquaculture and other human developments has led to changes in the natural living space of species. It is followed by the direct overuse of creatures (harvesting crops, cutting down the trees, hunting and fishing) and climate change, including rising sea levels and increasing extreme-weather events, wildfires, floods and droughts. The final causes of species extinction are pollution, especially plastics, and the spread of non-native species that can kill native plants and animals. In fact, good ecosystems can promote the growth of species.
The researchers say it is time for humans to act. They think maybe a new global way to save food and refuse waste in our life can turn the tables. Whether that is possible is an open question.
12. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph
A. To introduce the topic of the text. B. To introduce the schedule of the report.
C. To introduce humans’ sense of responsibility. D. To introduce the history of human development.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly show
A. The reliability of the findings. B. The species of animals worldwide.
C. The seriousness of species’ reduction. D. The risky experiences of the researchers.
14. Which word best describes the relationship between species and ecosystems
A. Narrow. B. Interdependent. C. Competitive. D. Unrelated.
15. What does the underlined phrase “turn the tables” in the last paragraph mean
A. Change the situations. B. Ask the open questions.
C. Pollute the environments. D. Turn the tables upside and down.

For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.

【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了100万个物种面临灭绝,人类应该对此负责。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“One million species face extinction, more than ever before in human history, according to a UN report released in May. And humans should be responsible. (联合国5月份发布的一份报告显示,100万个物种面临灭绝,比人类历史上任何时候都要多。人类应该对此负责)”可知,该段主要引出了本文的主题:人类对物种的灭绝负有责任。故选A。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“The findings are clear and alarming. The researchers have found that about 25 percent of the world’s plants and animals are at risk of extinction. These include sea and land animals. Even the domesticated (驯养的) animals are at risk: Over 9 percent of the domesticated animal species used for food and agriculture might have been lost. (研究结果清晰而令人担忧。研究人员发现,世界上大约25%的动植物面临灭绝的危险。这些动物包括海洋和陆地动物。即使是驯养的动物也处于危险之中::过9%的用于粮食和农业的驯养动物物种可能已经消失)”可知,第三段主要说明了物种减少的严重性。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“The change in ecosystems towards agriculture, aquaculture and other human developments has led to changes in the natural living space of species.
根据最后一段中“The researchers say it is time for humans to act. (研究人员表示,现在是人类采取行动的时候了)”可知,人类应该采取行动;再结合划线词上文“They think maybe a new global way to save food and refuse waste in our life can”可推知,此处解释采取行动的意义是什么,应该是可以“扭转局面”。故选A。
