Miles away from home, senior Nanuka Dudashvili notices the heat of the Texas as she waits for her host family. Dudashvili thinks about what they will be like and what being an exchange student will bring her later in life.
On Sept. 11, Dudashvili arrived in the U.S. as a foreign exchange student from the Republic of Georgia. She wanted to participate in the foreign exchange program because it’s her last chance to get involved this year. “I think everybody’s exchange family is different because it depends on what kind of school, what state, and what kind of host family you have,” Dudashvili said.
Dudashvili was used to how close everything was in her hometown but coming to the U.S., she realized the distance of everything around her. She came from a small country between Asia and Europe, where the schools were smaller and the classes they teach were different. When she first started school in the U.S., she noticed the size and friendly environment of the buildings. “I was amazed by the school. I was actually walking with a map all week,” Dudahuili said.
It wasn’t hard for her to get comfortable in a new place, for her classmates made her experience in the U.S. more enjoyable. Dudashvili’s host parents also helped her develop some of her favorite experiences. One of them being New Year’s since in the Republic of Georgia they don’t observe Christmas, her host parents celebrated all of the traditions for the holidays.
However, things can turn out a little bumpy sometimes. A challenge Dudashvili faced as an exchange student was the use of technology in classrooms. Sometimes she would take twice the amount of time submitting assignments on an electronic device than she did writing them by hand.
Dudashvili believes being a foreign exchange student has completely changed her life because it has helped her grow as a person. “I always wanted to change something in my life and I felt like this was the best thing to do, Dudashvili said, gave me everything and meant lot to me.”
4. Why did Dudashvili want to take part in the program

A. It requires students to take a map.

7. What does the underlined word “bumpy” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Tough. B. Opposite. C. Dull. D. Plain.

"Our coffee is loved by millions worldwide." Do you often see this kind of advertising in your country Statements like these that no one can prove are called puffery. Puffery is legal, even though it cannot be proved. In fact, puffery has been called "a license to lie", as it is regarded as an opinion rather than an objective statement.
Using puffery to raise awareness of products and to increase sales, is a common advertising method. Some people, however, worry about puffery. One of the concerns is whether consumers are misled by false advertising. Therefore, advertisements containing puffery sometimes can be tested in the courts, and the decisions that are made help to tell the difference between acceptable puffery and illegal advertising.
On the one hand, if a company tells the public that it sells the country's best-loved" or favorite product, this is thought to be puffery, rather than an objective description of market share. Similarly, the company does not have to produce proof that such puffery is actually supported by numbers or facts. In other words, advertisements such as the world's best cup of coffee" are impossible to prove. They are too good to be true and thus it is expected that any consumer will understand how subjective they are. Such advertisements are therefore not thought of as misleading. In fact, puffery like this in these advertisements is often considered to add to the entertainment value.
On the other hand, a company that states their products is the safest" or cheapest" needs to show proof, because statements that are objective need to be supported by proof or statistics. Consumer rights organizations can run tests to examine whether or not such statements agree with the panies should thus be very careful when making factual statements about a product.
A primary function of advertising is to create product awareness. As consumers, we need to know -about competing products, so we can make wise decisions on which one to buy. While it is important that advertisers are monitored to ensure they do not mislead consumers, it can be argued that puffery is a good way of raising awareness of new products. As long as there are effective ways of monitoring advertisements to prevent deliberate deception (欺骗) in safety and quality, it seems that most puffery is relatively harmless. Rather, it has become part of advertising, which most consumers can laugh at rather than being misled.
8. By “ Our coffee is loved by millions worldwide", the passage intends to ______.
A describe a fact B. introduce the topic
C. present an argument D. provide background information
9. The function of puffery is mainly to help______ .
A. describe products' market share B. raise awareness of new products
C test the advertisement in the courts D. run tests to examine the new products.
10. What does the author think of puffery
A. It is acceptable with effective monitoring.
B. It is misleading for it uses the false information.
C. It is harmful for it plays tricks on consumers.
D. It is convincing for it helps consumers to choose wisely.
11. Which can be the best title of this passage
A. Functions of Advertising B. Puffery in Advertising
C. Consumers and Advertising D. The Art of Advertising
D
The Forbidden City is well known for being full of Chinese cultural and historical relics. But Masters in the Forbidden City(《我在故宫修文物》)does not just focus on the stories of the past.
Instead, the documentary movie, which came out in Chinese cinemas on Dec. 16, focuses on ordinary people-the restorers(修复者)of relics and antiquities(古董).
The stories are told at a slow and relaxed pace, reflecting the restorers’ work. Restoration of cultural relics and antiques can be time-consuming, and sometimes boring. Yet these restorers’ patience and peace of mind are especially precious in a society where everything is changing so fast.
“If you choose this job, you have to stand hours of work sitting on a chair. You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet,” says Wang Jin, an ancient clock repair expert.
A touching part of the documentary is the spirit of craftsmanship(工艺)in the restorers. “Years of humdrum work requires not only skill, but also faith and spirit,” China Daily commented. “Looking for preciseness and perfection, devoting yourself to work, patience, endurance(忍耐), loneliness…All these qualities come from the craftsman spirit. ”
But unlike the popular idea of serious experts who sit around being serious, the documentary shows off the enthusiasm of the restorers. They play their guitars and make jokes about each other after a long day of restoration work.
One scene that has been very popular with Internet users features a young female restorer riding a bicycle through the empty Forbidden City on a Monday. While she is doing this, a narrator says, “The last person to do this was Puyi, the last emperor of the Oing Dynasty.”
Masters in the Forbidden City has proved wrong many people’s ideas about antique restorers, allowing them to realize that they are not old, dull professors, but people in their 40s, 30s and even 20s who can be quite pleasing to the eye.
12. According to the text, what’s the main purpose of the documentary Masters in the Forbidden City
A. To show people how antiques are restored
B. To display relics seldom seen by ordinary people
C. To draw attention to Chinese antique restorers’ lives
D. To praise the craftsmanship of Chinese antique restorers
13. What can we learn from what Wang Lin says in paragraph4
A. He often gets tired with his work B. There is no need to do restoration work fast
C. Antique restorers need to be patient and peaceful D. It takes years of hard work to adapt to antique restoration
14. What does the underlined word “humdrum” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Boring B. Different C. Relaxing D. Unusual
15. What is the purpose of the bicyle-riding scene in the documentary
A. To remind the audience of the last Qing emperor
B. To show the strange hobbies of young antique restorers
C. To encourage the young to consider a career in antique restoration in the future
D. To show that the documentary breaks from the old, dull image of antique restorers

The next morning. I carried a kitchen rubbish bag outside only to find Susan’s carpet lying there. I immediately reached in and pulled it out of the rubbish can. After giving it a brushing. I brought it into the house and put it away.
Before Holly’s birthday, Susan had been a regular visitor in our home. But suddenly I realized that it had been nearly three weeks since we’d heard the mention of Susan’s name. I missed her warm smile very much.
“Susan invited us to go to her house after school tomorrow. “Holly said as soon as she arrived from school. From her voice I sensed she was pleased with the invitation.
We were traveling along the winding country road that led to her house the following day. On the way Susan talked nervously about her foster mom and the seventeen cats they had taken in and cared for.
When we came to a stop, Susan’s foster mom — who introduced herself as Glenda — gave us a warm welcome. Susan guided us through the house. She proudly showed us her room, which was only decorated with some shabby used furniture.
I followed Susan’s foster mom, Glenda, into the kitchen. After clearing a small area, Glenda poured us each a cup of black coffee with her trembling hand. Then she began to relax as we drank our coffee and chatted about her cats.
Her eyes shone as she showed her fondness for Susan. But her expression turned blue when she referred to the girl’s past In an instant, I came to respect this warmhearted woman who had opened her home to a younger girl and tied hard to make a difference in her life.

12. According to the text what’s the main purpose of the documentary Masters in the Forbidden City
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. A 15. D

【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段第一句和第二句“If you choose this job, you have to stand hours of work sitting on a chair. You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet”(如果你选择这份工作,你必须坐在椅子上工作数小时。你需要安静,习惯于安静)可知,古董修复师的工作需要长时间安静地坐着。根据第五段倒第二句 “Looking for preciseness and perfection, devoting yourself to work, patience, endurance, loneliness…”(追求严谨和完美,致力于工作,耐心,忍耐,孤独……)可知,古董修复师的工作需要耐心和忍耐,是很孤独的。所以古董修复师的工作是枯燥无聊的,humdrum意为 “枯燥无聊的”。故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Masters in the Forbidden City has proved wrong many people’s ideas about antique restorers, allowing them to realize that they are not old, dull professors, but people in their 40s, 30s and even 20s who can be quite pleasing to the eye.”(《我在故宫修文物》证明了许多人关于古董修复者的想法是错误的,这让他们意识到他们不是老而乏味的教授,而是40多岁、30多岁甚至20多岁的人,他们可以非常讨人喜欢。)可知,纪录片中骑行场景的目的是为了表明这部纪录片打破了古董修复者陈旧呆板的形象。故选D。

【答案】As daylight began to fade, we offered our thanks for the visit and said goodbye. Holly sat quietly in the car on the way home, pressing her forehead against the window as if lost in thought. All the way we didn’t say even a single word. No sooner had we come to a stop in the driveway than she threw open the back door and flew straight to the side gate of our house. I followed her silently and my throat tightened as I observed my daughter standing by the rubbish can looking inside. Soon she puffed, paused for a second or two, and walked inside, seeming slightly anxious and irritated.
“Is this what you were looking for ” I asked her in a gentle voice as I drew out the carpet from the cupboard and placed it in front of her. She gazed at me with absolute surprise, which soon turned to wild joy. “Thanks. Thank you mom, but... “She nearly screamed out when I threw open my arms and hugged her tightly just as she did with the carpet. I could see tears shining in her crystal eyes, a drop or two splashing onto the dark blue carpet. Magically, what she once didn’t even want to refer to now turned out to be her precious birthday present.
