【Homework】 Read the scene and try to retell the plot. Possible version: A sample for retelling: The two gentlemen had been having a heated argument for a couple of days, and had decided to make a bet which would settle their argument. They were going to find someone to take part in their bet when they saw Henry walking on the street outside. They invited him into their house, where Henry told them he had landed in Britain by sailing. Although he had gone to the American consulate to seek help, he had not received any. Henry hoped that the brothers would offer him some sort of work because he had no money. Henry got upset with the brothers when they seemed too happy about his bad luck. They quickly told him not to feel that way and they gave him an envelope with money in it. They said the letter inside would explain what it was all about, but he had to postpone opening it until 2 o’clock. Henry felt that was odd. The scene ended with Henry leaving their house and promising that he would not open the letter until 2 o’clock. 2. Predict what will happen afterwards and try to write an ending to the story. Possible version: A sample for continuation of the excerpts of The Million Pound Bank Note Act 1, Scene 3: As Henry Adams was back on the street, the cramps in his stomach hurt so much that he had no alternative but to open the envelope in hopes of finding something of value. “Money!” He felt some banknote paper inside and thought to himself. Off he went to a cheap restaurant. His belly filled, he waited for the change after the waiter broke his note. “Sir, there is no way that a gentleman of your wealth will welch on the bill.” Surprised, Henry took a look at the banknote, “ 1,000,000!” Was it a joke Henry hurried to the house, only to find himself made a bet on by the two rich brothers, the content of which could be brought to light in a month. At his wits’ end, Henry decided to make the best of the situation, and got the stuff he needed on the loan. “We can’t possibly break the note.” being the most frequented line he got from the tailor’s, the hotel, etc, Henry lived a flourishing life in London, categorized as a parvenu millionaire until he fell in love with Portia Langham, who married him in the end, when he returned the note in one piece to the brothers, with an earning of 200,000. He became rich because he truly understood the value of money!
