Farmers and hunters are calling for an extension (延期) to the Victorian duck hunting season, saying certain species are doing great harm to crops and waterways and need to be controlled. This season runs from 8:00 am today and will end in 20 days, down from the usual 12 weeks, with a bag limit of five listed game ducks per day.
Wayne Shields grows leafy greens on the Mornington Peninsula and he said the decision to reduce the duck hunting season would take its toll on farmers. “The wood ducks are the ones causing all of the damage; the black ducks are no problem around here. The wood ducks come in at night and they just clean me out completely and they’ve done it a number of times over a number of years,” he said.
Mr. Shields and his wife, Natasha, run Peninsula Fresh Organics and he said there was nothing he could do to stop the invasion (入侵). “I nearly went broke a few years ago. Back then I was planting 10,000 lettuce (生菜) a week and they would quite happily eat 10,000 lettuce a week.” Due to the damage caused by the wood ducks, Mr. Shields said there should be a year-round open season on the wood ducks and farmers should be allowed to shoot birds.
Professor Richard Kingsford, Director of the Centre for Ecosystem Science at UNSW, said although the wood ducks ate crops, extending the duck season may not achieve what farmers wanted. He is calling on the government to invest more in research to address the threat certain species of waterbirds caused for some farmers, so other nonlethal (非致命的) ways to destroy the birds can be found.
24. What is the difference about duck hunting this year
A. Duck hunting is prohibited. B. The duck hunting season is shortened.
C. The duck hunting season is prolonged. D. Duck hunting is limited to a bag of ducks.
25. What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A. Farmers suffer a huge loss from wood ducks.
B. Farmers actually approve of keeping black ducks.
C. Wood ducks wake farmers up completely at night.
D. Farmers support the reduction of the duck hunting season.
26. What did Mr. Shields suggest concerning the wood ducks
A. Making more investment in wood ducks. B. Making shooting birds permitted for farmers.
C. Doing nothing to stop the invasion. D. Planting more lettuce on the farm.
27. What does Richard Kingsford think of the hunting season extension
A. Indifferent. B. Neutral. C. Favorable. D. Opposed.
B 25. A 26. B 27. D

根据第一段中“This season runs from 8:00 am today and will end in 20 days, down from the usual 12 weeks, with a bag limit of five listed game ducks per day. (本季从今天早上8点开始,将在20天内结束,而不是通常的12周,每天最多只能携带5只在列表的野鸭)”可知,今年的猎鸭季被缩短了,不同于往年的时长。故选B项。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“The wood ducks are the ones causing all of the damage; the black ducks are no problem around here. The wood ducks come in at night and they just clean me out completely and they’ve done it a number of times over a number of years (木鸭是造成所有破坏的罪魁祸首;黑鸭在这里不是问题。木鸭在晚上进来,它们把我的东西都吃光了,在过去的几年里,它们已经做了很多次了)”可知,木鸭多次吃光农民种植的东西。由此可知,木鸭给农民带来了巨大的损失。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Due to the damage caused by the wood ducks, Mr. Shields said there should be a year-round open season on the wood ducks and farmers should be allowed to shoot birds. (Shields先生说,由于木鸭造成的破坏,应该有一个全年的木鸭开放季,农民应该被允许射击鸟类)”可知,Shields先生认为农民应该被允许猎杀包括木鸭在内的鸟类。故选B项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Professor Richard Kingsford, Director of the Centre for Ecosystem Science at UNSW, said although the wood ducks ate crops, extending the duck season may not achieve what farmers wanted. He is calling on the government to invest more in research to address the threat certain species of waterbirds caused for some farmers, so other nonlethal (非致命的) ways to destroy the birds can be found.

A Neste fuel station in Finland is currently the only place in the world where you can have your car refueled by a robot. It’s the pilot site chosen by Autofuel, a Danish startup, to test its futuristic refueling system—a robotic arm that can locate a car’s fuel tank door, select the right type of fuel; and operate the pump (加油泵).
“Our technology intends to provide the customers with maximum comfort and safety at gas stations,” Jonas Thor Olsen, CEO of Autofuel, said. “The robotic arm doesn’t need human involvement. It allows them to go to the shop for a coffee or take a short break while the car is refueled.”
Autofuel’s solution consists of a robotic arm housed within the fuel pump, and a series of sensors and cameras designed to keep things running smoothly. Cameras detect the vehicle’s registration number, so the system is able to detect what kind of fuel it requires. Another camera directs the car to stop in a certain area so that the arm can easily reach the fuel tank door. The arm itself then starts to move, opening the door, selecting the right fuel and finally refueling the car.
The whole thing looks great in promotional videos, but after one of them recently became popular online, people brought up a few concerns. First of all, in order for the entire process to work, one needs to have their vehicle registered with Autofuel. That’s information many people have no inclination to share for something as small as refueling. Also, the speed at which the robotic arm operates worries a lot of people as it appears to move much slower than a human.
With robots and AI becoming such a big part of our lives lately, it’s easy to imagine solutions like Autofuel becoming mainstream in the near future. But any new innovation has to be tested and improved over and over again.
28. What is a robotic arm’s promotional advantage concerning car refueling
A. It moves faster than a human. B. It doesn’t need car registration.
C. It can park cars automatically. D. It requires no human assistance.
29. What does the underlined word “inclination” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Opportunity. B. Permission. C. Willingness. D. Ability.
30. How does the author find the robotic arm
A. It is well accepted. B. It is far from perfect.
C. Its structure is strange. D. Its function is meaningless.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. This Robotic Arm Will Refuel Your Car B. An Innovation Has Been Improved Greatly
C. Some Negative Views on a Refueling Solution D. A More Efficient Assistant at the Train Station
D 29. C 30. B 31. A

细节理解题, 根据第二段“The robotic arm doesn’t need human involvement. It allows them to go to the shop for a coffee or take a short break while the car is refueled.(机械臂不需要人的参与。
根据倒数第二段“Also, the speed at which the robotic arm operates worries a lot of people as it appears to move much slower than a human.(此外,机器人手臂的操作速度也让很多人感到担忧,因为它的移动速度似乎比人类慢得多)”可推断,作者认为机械臂并不完美。
通读全文,尤其是文章第一段“A Neste fuel station in Finland is currently the only place in the world where you can have your car refueled by a robot. It’s the pilot site chosen by Autofuel, a Danish startup, to test its futuristic refueling system—a robotic arm that can locate a car’s fuel tank door, select the right type of fuel; and operate the pump (加油泵).(芬兰的Neste加油站是目前世界上唯一一个可以让机器人给汽车加油的地方。这是丹麦初创公司Autofuel选择的试验场,用于测试其未来的加油系统——一个可以定位汽车油箱门、选择正确类型的燃料并操作泵的机械臂)”可知,本文主要介绍了可以给汽车加油的机械臂。由此可知,最好的标题是A选项“这个机械臂将为你的汽车加油”。故选A。

Emotions come in many ways: facial expressions, gestures, tone of voice and so on. Susan Goldin-Meadow sums up how people use gestures with speech in her new book, Thinking With Your Hands. It is a masterly tour through a lifetime’s research.
Virtually everyone gestures. Like words, gestures are fixed within cultures and accompany speech as a second channel of information. Subjects watch a film in which a cat runs but they are told to lie and say it jumps. They do so in words, while their hands make a running motion.
Gesture isn’t sign language. Sign languages have clearly defined words and grammar, and differ geographically just as spoken ones do. Professor Goldin-Meadow spends a lot of time on home sign-systems of signs typically developed by deaf children in hearing families who aren’t exposed to a conventional sign language. Such children are essentially inventing rough but rich languages out of nothing, with features such as fixed word order and grammatical structures much like those in fully qualified languages.
Returning to conventional gesture, the author keeps her focus on child development. Some students who fail at a tricky mathematics problem may gesture to indicate they begin to understand it; they should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they are entirely at sea. Children who still use only one word at a time may combine a word and a gesture; this successfully predicts that two-word phrases are just around the corner. And those taught to move their hands about when discussing a moral question from several angles soon start to see the problem from different points of view.
The final section of the book offers practical advice. Teachers are encouraged to use gestures and to observe those their students make. Parents are taught to fill in the word a child misses when they gesture rather than adding information. Those who gesture less are more likely to need early intervention. Doctors can be trained to look out for gestures meaning that patients are thinking something they aren’t ready to say.
32. What does the text show in paragraph 2
A. Every country has its own gestures. B. A lie detection is used in many areas.
C. Cats are well skilled at using gestures. D. Gestures can reflect human real thoughts.
33. How do the deaf children communicate with family members according to paragraph 3
A. By home sign. B. By sign language.
C. By spoken words. D. By written means.
34. Why should a teacher observe the kids’ gestures in class
A. To predict the final outcome. B. To prevent kids from failure.
C. To conduct the targeted teaching. D. To see the problems from all sides.
35. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. A guidebook to a language. B. An introduction to a book.
C. An essay on the art of gesture. D. A review of sign language.
D 33. A 34. C 35. B

根据第二段“Subjects watch a film in which a cat runs but they are told to lie and say it jumps. They do so in words, while their hands make a running motion.(实验对象看了一部电影,里面有一只猫在跑,但他们被要求撒谎说猫在跳,他们用语言说猫在跳,而他们的手做着奔跑的动作)”可知,实验对象虽然嘴上说猫在跳,但他们的手势反映了他们真实的想法,认为猫实际上是在跑。
根据第三段“Professor Goldin-Meadow spends a lot of time on home sign-systems of signs typically developed by deaf children in hearing families who aren’t exposed to a conventional sign language.(Goldin-Meadow教授花了很多时间研究家庭手语系统,这些系统通常是由听力正常的家庭中没有接触到传统手语的失聪儿童开发的)”可知,失聪儿童是通过家庭手语与家人交流沟通的。故选A。
根据第四段“Some students who fail at a tricky mathematics problem may gesture to indicate they begin to understand it; they should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they are entirely at sea.(一些在棘手的数学问题上失败的学生可能会用手势表示他们开始理解了,对他们的教育应该与那些姿态表明他们完全茫然的人有所不同)”可推知,教师可以通过观察学生的手势和姿态来了解他们对问题的理解程度,从而有的放矢,进行有针对性的教学。
根据第一段“Susan Goldin-Meadow sums up how people use gestures with speech in her new book, Thinking With Your Hands.(Susan Goldin-Meadow在她的新书《用手思考》中总结了人们如何在说话时使用手势)”、第四段“Returning to conventional gesture, the author keeps her focus on child development.(回到传统的手势,作者继续关注儿童的发展)”和最后一段“The final section of the book offers practical advice.(这本书的最后一部分提供了实用的建议)”可知,本文主要是介绍了Susan Goldin-Meadow的新书《用手思考》中所总结的人们如何在说话中使用手势及相关建议。

Leo Ajayi, aged 15, and Jim Green, aged 14, were good friends. Every autumn the two families would go together on a trip to the Rocky Mountains. This year, under the guidance of park workers, they camped on the hillside. After putting up the tents (帐篷), the two boys announced to climb Cathedral Mountain nearby on their own next morning and promised their parents to return before dark
Early the following day, the friends set off with a bag packed with food and water. Along the winding path, they admired a sea of colourful leaves spreading beneath their feet. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less-traveled. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, they felt refreshed from tiredness. How worthwhile the trip was
Having got enough rest, Leo and Jim decided to climb down. Suddenly, trouble began. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Jim fell three metres off the side of the path. Leo climbed down to where Jim was and found him badly injured and not able to move
“Help!” Leo shouted. NO REPLY. “Help! Help!” Leo almost cried. But still no replies. “If only I had brought my mobile phone in the bag,” Leo thought, regretful and sad. Taking a deep breath, he tried to calm himself down. Then he noticed Jim was bleeding. So he cleaned the dirt and blood from Jim’s face and hands, and then tried to help Jim stand up, but Jim’s right leg was hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Leo gave Jim his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. Leo used an extra shirt to keep Jim warm and they rested together against a rock. However, as darkness started to fall, the weather turned cold and windy and help still didn’t arrive.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Feeling low, Jim told Leo to leave him alone and go back himself. But Leo still did not leave. He thought it was too dangerous for Jim to be alone on such a cold, windy night. Cold autumn wind made Leo shivering. Disappointment welled up inside him. Leo knew he had to do something other than staying still. Weighing the pros and cons, Leo finally decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him down the mountain. So, Leo carried Jim on his back and they started the long climb back to the campsite. But the mountainous path was even tougher and more rocky for Leo to climb down, let alone Jim was on his back.
Seeing this, Jim asked Leo to leave him alone again. Leo felt a surge of bitterness and shook his head without a word. Suddenly, a beam of light flashed. Great joy consumed them and Leo shouted his loudest “help”. Out came a park worker with a flashlight, who was searching for the boys. With the help of the worker, they were rescued and reunited with their concerned parents. “I will always remember what Leo did for me,” said Jim afterwards. “He saved my life. That is the greatest thing that a person can do for his friend.”

B. Neutral. C. Favorable. D. Opposed.

29 What does the underlined word “inclination” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
D
