All the Beauty in the World, Patrick Bringley’s memoir (回忆录) about his 10 years working as a guard at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art(Met), brings new meaning to the term “art appreciation”. During 8-12 hour shift s spent among the galleries, he takes advantage of the gift of time to study the masterpieces he’s been hired to protect and to think about the role of art throughout history.
Bringley is not the only Met staff to write about the institution. But Bringley’s “guard’s-eye view” is unique, and he presents his personal story with sincerity. After his brother Tom’s death from cancer in 2008, Bringley gave up his job as a journalist for a job in which “I was happy to be going nowhere”. He explains, “I had lost someone. I did not wish to move on from that. In a sense, I didn’t wish to move at all.” Bringley doesn’t say when he decided to channel his experience of finding peace into art, but this story about jumping off the career ladder in order to find the space for quiet reflection is surprisingly suited to our times.
All the Beauty in the World offers well-chosen facts about the museum to support Bringley’s personal tale. As interesting as these facts are, it’s Bringley’s reflections on dozens of individual paintings, photographs, sculptures and ancient artifacts that turn this book into a tribute(致敬) to the power of art. Discussing Alfred Stieglitz’s photographs of his wife, he writes, “I think that sometimes we need permission to stop and adore things, and a work of art gives us that.” In a Vermeer portrait(肖像) of a dozing maidservant, he is moved to see that the artist caught “that feeling we sometimes have that a private setting possesses a holiness of its own. It was my constant feeling in Tom’s hospital room”.
As rich in moving insights as the Met is in treasures, All the Beauty in the World reminds us of the importance of learning not about art, but from it. This is art appreciation at a high level.
21.What makes All the Beauty in the World different from other books by Met staffs
A.Its author’s personal sad story. B.Its well-chosen facts about the museum.
C.Its author’s unique point of view. D.Its detailed introduction to the artworks.
22.Why did Bringley decide to become a guard at the Met
A.To remember his dead brother. B.To enrich his journalism career.
C.To study the artworks more closely. D.To find some peace and quiet in art.
23.How does Bringley tell the museum stories in his memoir
A.By interviewing retired museum staff members.
B.By relating museum facts to his personal life.
C.By presenting the background of each masterpiece.
D.By engaging visitors in the discussion of the artworks.
24.What does the author think of the book as a whole
A.It reveals the inner world of the author. B.It deserves to be read for some peace and quiet.
C.It tells little-known facts about the museum. D.It offers new insights into art appreciation.

If there was an app on your phone that claimed to improve your memory, would you be willing to try it It’s hard to resist the idea of having a better memory. After all, our memories are delicate and can be affected by various factors such as diseases, injuries, mental health conditions, and aging
In response to this perceived need, the brain training industry has grown rapidly, offering a wide range of accessible and affordable mental exercises through smartphone and tablet apps. Many researchers have found evidence suggesting that well-designed exercises can improve mental abilities and even lead to better scores on IQ tests. They compare the brain to muscles, suggesting that targeted repetition of memory exercises can strengthen and condition our memory processes, similar to how athletes engage in strength and conditioning by repeatedly exercising specific muscle groups.
In contrast to everyday activities like reading a detailed article or solving a complex puzzle, memory training apps are specifically designed to provide a more challenging workout for the brain. These apps typically involve tasks that require tracking a large number of objects while being distracted by a secondary task, such as mental calculations or exploring a game’s landscape. If this brain training proves effective, it could be beneficial for individuals with brain-related disabilities or those recovering from conditions like cancer.
Critics, though, argue that while the concept is appealing, the overall evidence fails to demonstrate significant improvement in core brain processes. Additionally, despite the claims made by many apps and brain training companies, scientists have yet to identify the key factors that make an intervention truly effective or determine the best ways to address the diverse needs of individuals seeking help.
While the question is still open to debate, there is evidence suggesting that short-term working memory training can benefit high-functioning individuals, such as college students. However, it’s important to note that brain training, like diet and exercise, is unlikely to have identical effects on every individual.
25.In what way is the brain similar to muscles according to many researchers
A.In testing results. B.In work processes.
C.In training methods. D.In bodily functions.
26.What is the main feature of the typical tasks in memory training apps
A.Detailed. B.Effective. C.Demanding. D.Complicated.
27.What do critics think memory training apps lack
A.Legal claims. B.Appealing concepts. C.Tailored services. D.Proven effects.
28.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Can our memory be improved B.What does the brain training industry bring
C.What have scientists found about memory D.Does brain training actually work

A recent study has found that using wood for construction instead of concrete and steel can reduce emissions. But Tim Searchinger at Princeton University says many of these studies are based on the false foundation that harvesting wood is carbon neutral(碳中和). “Only a small percentage of the wood gets into a timber(木料) product, and a part of that gets into a timber product that can replace concrete and steel in a building,” he says. Efficiencies vary in different countries, but large amounts of a harvested tree are left to be divided into parts, used in short-lived products like paper or burned for energy, all of which generate emissions.
In a report for the World Resources Institute, Searchinger and his colleagues have modelled how using more wood for construction would affect emissions between 2010 and 2050, accounting for the emissions from harvesting the wood. They considered various types of forests and parts of wood going towards construction. They also factored in the emissions savings from replacing concrete and steel.
Under some circumstances, the researchers found significant emissions reductions. But each case required what they considered an unrealistically high portion(一部分) of the wood going towards construction, as well as rapid growth only seen in warmer places, like Brazil. In general, they found a large increase in global demand for wood would probably lead to rising emissions for decades. Accounting for emissions in this way, the researchers reported in a related paper that increasing forest s between 2010 and 2050 would add emissions equal to roughly 10 percent of total annual emissions.
Ali Amiri at Aalto University in Finland says the report’s conclusions about emissions from rising demand are probably correct, but the story is different for wood we already harvest. “Boosting the efficiency of current harvests and using more wood for longer-lived purposes than paper would cut emissions,” he says. “We cannot just say we should stop using wood.”
29.What is wrong with previous researches according to Searchinger
A.They got wrong statistics. B.They were applied in limited countries.
C.They included too many factors. D.They used an incorrect concept.
30.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.The process of the new research. B.The background of the new study.
C.The challenge of the new research. D.The achievements of the new study.
31.When will the emissions drop off greatly according to the new study
A.When the rising global demand for wood is completely met.
B.When the increasing forest harvests are widely restricted.
C.When a high portion of wood is used for global construction.
D.When wood is fully efficiently employed for lasting purpose.
32.What is Ali Amiri’s attitude toward the new result
A.Favorable. B.Doubtful. C.Objective. D.Critical.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
The rise of social media has revolutionized human connectivity, but its overuse can make people feel increasingly unhappy and isolated (孤立的). 33
One significant problem with frequent social media use is comparing ourselves to others. Many individuals experience “Facebook envy”. 34 Gradually, it may result in self-doubt. To boost self-confidence, it is essential to reduce time on others’ profiles, and focus on self-reflection.
Social media can also make it hard to form real friendships. Constant online interaction may make us feel lonely when we see others having fun online. Stina Sanders, a former model, explained “When I see my friend’s photos of a party I didn’t go to, it can make me feel quite lonely and anxious”. 35
Quality sleep is essential for mental health, but excessive (过度的) phone use before bedtime can severely disturb it. The anxiety and envy caused by social media content can keep our brains alert, making it challenging to fall asleep. 36 Avoiding the phone for at least 40 minutes to an hour before bed can improve sleep.
“ 37 However, it can also change the way we recall our life. If we direct all of our attention trying to take the perfect photo, less will be available to enjoy other aspects of the experience in real time,” said Dr. Bono. To decrease these effects, practicing self-discipline and limiting phone use can help us to stay focused and clear-minded.
If you feel like social media is beginning to affect you, why not consider distributing less social media time The slight change can do you a lot of good.
A.Regular use of Facebook can keep good relationships.
B.Social media offers a convenient way to record memories.
C.This can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction with themselves.
D.Plus, the blue light that is given off by screens affects our sleep.
E.Therefore, it’s important to develop genuine offline relationships.
F.Social media can lead to serious physical and mental health issues.
G.The reliance(依赖) on it can negatively impact people’s mental health in the long run.

A Four-legged Guardian Angel
Snow had just melted off the ground that April day at our house in Regina Beach, Saskatchewan. I had just cleaned up the pool in preparation for selling the house. The year before, I had lost my job with the provincial government, and now our financial situation was severe. In despair, I had finally put the home on the market, and a real estate (房地产) agent was due to show up later that day. Even worse, I would have to give up my beloved Great Dane (大丹犬), Brigitte, because I could no longer afford the cost of feeding it. The thought of losing the dog and our beautiful home was almost more than I could bear.
Deep in despair, I sat typing up resumes and cover letters. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see my thirteen-month-old son, Forrest, as he lay on the carpet, playing near our big. gentle nanny-dog. Brigitte. It seemed as if Brigitte was always meant to be in this family and she turned out to be a perfect companion.
Brigitte came to our house on Christmas Eve when the doorbell rang and I was sure some of my Christmas packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful Great Dane sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there Perhaps, someone had found the puppy somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed I would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
Thinking of these, I couldn’t help heaving a sigh(长叹一口气) and went straight back to work. However, I hadn’t typed more than two sentences when Brigitte began barking fiercely and running back and forth to the sliding glass door overlooking our pool.
I raced to see what was happening and noticed that the sliding door was slightly open. Suddenly, I realized Forrest was nowhere to be seen. In panic, I opened the door and ran outside.

Boys and girls,
I’m honored to present the result of the survey about ways to relieve stress. 80% of the respondents said they favored watching videos to relax, followed closely by listening to music. Comparatively, only a small number of students chose exercise or talking to others.
While videos and music are fun, spending too much time on them can make us rely too much on our phones and ignore more important things. There are actually better options available. For example, doing exercise or talking with friends not only relieves stress but also brings us closer to each other.
So, if we are feeling a lot of stress, it’s a good idea to try different ways to relax. But most importantly, we should focus on things that help both our body and mind.
Thank you for listening!
【参考范文2】
Boys and girls,
I’m honored to present the result of the survey about ways to relieve stress. Surprisingly, approximately four fifths of the respondents regarded watching videos as their preferred way to ease stress, closely followed by listening to music. In contrast, only a small percentage of individuals chose sports or chatting with others as means of reducing their psychological burden/ In contrast, the number of students preferring sports or chatting accounts for 30% and 40% respectively.
While videos and music offer amusement and fascination, excessive indulgence(过分沉溺) can intensify our dependence on smartphones, thus distracting our attention from our daily lives. In fact, alternative approaches, such as sports and social interaction, can offer greater benefits. Not only does participating in sports promote physical well-being, but interacting with our friends and parents can also provide comfort as well.
Therefore, I suggest that senior three students adopt a combination of stress-relief methods, prioritizing(优先考虑) those that enhance both our physical and mental health.
Thank you for listening!

There I was surprised to see Brigitte, who was terrified of water, div e into the pool. Then to my horror, I caught sight of Forrest’s yellow sleeper Brigitte was bravely doing her best to keep him afloat by holding on to his sleeper with her mouth. At the same time, she was desperately trying to swim to the shallow end Only then did I realize that Forrest had somehow opened the door, wandered out and fallen into the pool In n split second (刹那间), I dove in, lifted my precious baby out and carried him inside. Hands shaking, I called 911 and we were rushed to the hospital immediately, where the doctor kept him for observation for one night.
Finally, the doctor said Forrest was all right and could be released from hospital. Back home, the instant Brigitte saw him, she basked with apparent joy and wouldn’t let Forrest out of her sight. She eventually settled down, but remained dedicated(热忱的,一心一意的) to Forrest and followed him everywhere, concerned about his safety. Even when Forrest was asleep. Brigitte crammed(挤) herself under the crib(摇篮), watching over him. Our dog was indeed an angel, erasing(消除) any despair I might have had about losing our home. A house could always be replaced, but knowing we had each other around was the greatest blessing of all. I was grateful she was part of our lives, who I couldn’t bear parting with.
【参考范文2】
There I was surprised to see Brigitte, who was terrified of water, div e into the pool. Breathless and astonished, I watched Brigitte mustering her courage (鼓起勇气) to swim towards my son, who was struggling desperately in the icy water. Almost meanwhile, I sprang into action(紧急行动起来). With every powerful stroke(划水), I got close to where Forrest was floating. Fortunately, Forrest was about to sink when I grabbed his hair and dragged him to the shallow end of the pool, with Brigitte paddling alongside, concern obvious in her big and intelligent eyes. The moment I got him out, our beloved dog bounced around him, constantly licking his pale face as if to warm him. Voice trembling, I called 911 and soon we were rushed to the nearest hospital. Every second counted!
Finally, the doctor said Forrest was all right and could be released from hospital. At this, I breathed a sigh of relief. On arrival home, our dog Brigitte leaped high up to give us warm and wet kisses, wagging her tail cheerfully. Looking directly into her eyes with gratitude and a bit of guilt. I scooped her up(抱起,捧起) and held her close to my chest, unwilling to let her go for a single minute. It was then that I suddenly became aware that life sometimes can be cruel and miserable, but there was always someone or something guiding you, protecting you, and accompanying you with unconditional love and loyalty. Our dog was just our guardian angel, shattering(粉碎) my despair about losing our home and guiding us out of trouble. How could I give her up

M: I don’t mind, really All the male roles seem pretty cool. What about you
W: I’d be happy with any of the parts, other than Anita I think that would involve far too much dancing for me! I love performing, particularly singing (12) But I’ve got two left feet!
M: You see. I’m the opposite.(12) My voice probably isn’t strong enough for a theater show like this.(11)(12) but I’m hoping my dancing will see me through!

M: So, what are we doing for you today (13)
W: Just tidy it up. I don’t want to lose too much of the length.(13) I’ve got a job interview next week, so I need to look smart.
M: How exciting! And color (13)
W: Same as usual, I think.(13)
M: Okay. great! So, tell me about the job.
W: It’s a position for a social media manager for a health and fitness magazine.
M: Oh, wow! Is that similar to what you’re doing now
W: Yeah, I’ve been working in social media for the past few years. Before that, I was working in sales.(14)(16)
M: Sales That always seems like an exciting career.
W: Yeah, I got a sales job straight out of school. My high school career advisor suggested it to me probably because I was such a chatty and confident kid!(15) And it was fun. But I was never ambitious or competitive enough to really make it to the top.
M: So, you retrained
W: Yes, and I haven’t regretted it for a moment. This job still allows me to use my people skills, and I love that. Unlike sales, it really allows me to use my creativity.(16)
Text 10
Welcome parents, students, and fellow teachers. It’s so great to see so many of you here tonight to learn about our school’s new band exchange program! For those who don’t know me, I’m Rojas, the head of the school language department, teaching Spanish and French. As this is a musical exchange, I’m running the program alongside the school’s Head of Music, Mrs. Carson.(17) It has long been my ambition to start an international exchange program. As the son of a Venezuelan mother and an American father, (18) I was educated in international schools all over the world. While moving around so much wasn’t always easy, my international school experience really made me who I am today. It introduced me to friends from all around the world and opened my eyes to so many different cultures.(19) Now, I want to give that same gift to our students. Students from both schools will almost certainly improve their playing and their Chinese or English language skills. But my real hope is that they will come away with a deeper awareness and respect for the way others live.(20) Though our lifestyles may be very different, it’s always possible to find common ground and friendship.
