Scientists have not found any signs of life on Mars yet,but they say a robotic vehicle called “Curiosity” is helping them learn a lot about the planet’s history and climate.
Curiosity landed on Mars in August 2012 after travelling through space for more than eight months. It was sent to Mars by scientists from NASA in the United States.
Curiosity is about the size of a car and has six wheels. It also has a robotic arm, cameras, and instruments that allow it to examine things it finds on the surface. Then it sends the information back to the earth.
Curiosity’s main task is to find out if anything could live on Mars, either now or in the past.On Nov.2,NASA scientists held a press conference (新闻发布会) to discuss what Curiosity had found in its first two months on Mars.
Curiosity has found soil that is similar to the sand formed by volcanoes (火山) on the earth.Scientists say that studying the minerals in Martian soil will help them understand what conditions were like on the planet in the past.Curiosity also found smooth stones like the ones found on river beds and seashores on the earth, where their rough edges have been worn down by water.Mars is very cold and dry now,but scientists say the smooth stones tell them that a river used to run through the place where they were found.
Curiosity has been testing the atmosphere around Mars for a type of gas called methane (甲烷),but so far it has not found any.On the earth, most methane is produced by plants or animals.Methane on Mars might indicate that some type of tiny plants or animals lived there.

Have you ever wanted to see your dreams after you woke up Artificial intelligence (AI) technology may help you do this in the near future!
Researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AI system to recreate images in people’s heads. The pictures AI has created include a teddy bear, an airplane and a clock tower. The technology is 80 percent accurate, reported Science magazine.
Previously there have been AI models that can turn a word or phrase into images. The AI has studied lots of images and their text descriptions. Over time, the AI can find patterns and recreate pictures if you first input text.
This time, the researchers took a step further. They trained the AI to link people’s brain scan data with images. They asked four people to look at 10, 000 different images, and let the AI find patterns of blood flow in the brain. Then the patterns can be related to the images.
If people looked at an airplane, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very cloudy airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text - to - image” model. By feeding the keyword “airplane”, the AI would improve the image and make it more real.
“It’s a new method that combines textual and visual information to ‘decipher the brain’”, Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University told Science magazine.
Researchers said the technology could someday help people with paralysis to communicate. It might also help scientists understand dreams or even how other animals see the world.
46.What do we know about the AI system mentioned in Paragraph 2
A.It can help train people’s minds. B.It can fully present people’s dreams.
C.It was created for drawing people’s heads. D.It can recreate pictures in people’s heads.

One morning in July 2011, a taxi sat wandering outside Petco Park stadium in San Diego. And Wade LeBlanc, a baseball pitcher (投手) for the Padres, climbed in. “To the airport, please,” he told the driver. LeBlanc was headed for Tucson, Arizona, home of the club’s A-level branch organization at the time. He’d been sent down to the minors. Again. For the eighth time in three years. It seemed everything was turning dark.
“You’re Wade LeBlanc,” the taxi driver said.
“Right.”
“You got some good stuff.”
This surprised the pitcher, after the previous night’s disastrous performance.
“I think there are some things you should think about trying” the driver continued. “I don’t know; I’m not a player. Maybe something like going over your head in your windup
Wait, what This guy was offering... advice Earlier in his career, LeBlanc might have laughed. Or been angry. But today, he just listened. He couldn’t afford to miss anything. His career was on the line.
The next day, in Tucson, LeBlanc met his pitch coach. He said he was thinking about improving his windup. His coach agreed. Instead of keeping his hands tight to his chest at the beginning of his delivery, LeBlanc raised them briefly over his head, as the taxi driver had suggested. LeBlanc mixed the new move into his next start. And he was smart, allowing only one hit over seven periods. It was the turning point in his career. Eight years later, LeBlanc is a pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. He signed the first contract extension of his Major League Baseball career—at age 33.
The funny thing about advice: we so often take it from the wrong people. That is, we overvalue the advice of experts while undervaluing the input of common people. A.He said sorry to his coach. B.He started to change his moves.
C.He decided to go to a new team. D.He thought back to his last game.

A.Don’t waste time. B.Don’t look down on anyone.

“You’ve got to know your own value, know what you want, and stick with it.” That’s what T. McDowell’s advice to others is, and it’s certainly worked for him. This high school senior is currently the owner of Immersion Imaging, a successful company specializing in Internet commerce solutions and online financial databases.
McDowell launched the company in 2012, which was originally called 4th Dimension Graphics. Two years later, it was recognized as Immersion Imaging. Surprisingly, he didn’t begin the company with the assistance of any partners, but instead founded it on his own with the experience and contacts that he already had.
“It’s always been a one-person operation. I could easily take on partners or scale up the business some more, but I want to keep it this way for now,” McDowell said. “I don’t lack any contracts right now. I like it because it’s flexible, so that if I need more income, I can do more; and if I take a break for a while, I don’t have any problems.” If McDowell spends between 30 and 60 hours a week working, Immersion Imaging will offer him a steady income.
Part of the reason McDowell ended up in the computer industry might be explained by the exposure he had as a child. However, he spends his free time on more than just computers. His real interest lies in aviation (航空). With his business spirit and success, McDowell won’t have a problem realizing his dreams of the sky one day.
56.What does McDowell’s company focus on (no more than 10 words)

根据第二段“Then their good relationship broke. It began with a small thing, then bitter words, and then weeks of silence.(然后他们的良好关系破裂了。 故选A项。
根据第五段“I want you to build a fence—an 8-foot fence. I don’t want to see his place or his face any more.(我要你建个栅栏,8英尺高的栅栏。
结合下文“Then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hands. “I’m terribly sorry for what I have said and done. We should be good to each other,” said Farmer Bob.(然后他们在中间相遇,手拉着手。 所以“You’re quite a fellow to build this bridge!(你能够建造这座桥真是个了不起!)” 故选A项。
结合文章内容和最后一段“I’d love to stay,” the carpenter said, “but I have more bridges to build.(木匠说:“我也想留下来,但是我还有更多的桥要建。”)”
D选项“A Fence or a Bridge(栅栏还是桥梁)”概括文章主题。

根据第二段中“Curiosity landed on Mars in August 2012 after travelling through space for more than eight months.(“好奇号”于2012年8月在太空中飞行了八个多月后登陆火星。)”
根据第五段中“Curiosity also found smooth stones like the ones found on river beds and seashores on the earth, where their rough edges have been worn down by water.(“好奇号”还发现了光滑的石头,就像在河床和海岸上发现的那些石头一样,它们粗糙的边缘已经被水磨掉了。)”
根据第五段最后一句“Mars is very cold and dry now,but scientists say the smooth stones tell them that a river used to run through the place where they were found.(火星现在非常寒冷和干燥,但科学家们说,这些光滑的石头告诉他们,曾经有一条河流流经这些石头被发现的地方。)” 故选A项。
根据第六段“Curiosity has been testing the atmosphere around Mars for a type of gas called methane (甲烷), but so far it has not found any. On the earth, most methane is produced by plants or animals. Methane on Mars might indicate that some type of tiny plants or animals lived there.(“好奇号”一直在测试火星周围的大气中是否有一种叫做甲烷的气体,但到目前为止还没有发现。
根据第一段“Scientists have not found any signs of life on Mars yet, but they say a robotic vehicle called “Curiosity” is helping them learn a lot about the planet’s history and climate.(科学家们还没有在火星上发现任何生命迹象,但他们表示,一个名为“好奇号”的机器人飞行器正在帮助他们了解火星的历史和气候。)

根据第三段的“They asked four people to look at 10, 000 different images, and let the AI find patterns of blood flow in the brain. Then the patterns can be related to the images.”(他们让四个人看一万张不同的图像,让人工智能找到大脑中的血流模式。然后可以将图案与图像相关联)”和第四段的“If people looked at an airplane, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very cloudy airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text - to - image” model. By feeding the keyword “airplane”, the AI would improve the image and make it more real.
由文最后一段“Researchers said the technology could someday help people with paralysis to communicate. It might also help scientists understand dreams or even how other animals see the world.”(研究人员表示,这项技术有朝一日可以帮助瘫痪患者进行交流。

由第一段中的“He’d been sent down to the minors. Again. For the eighth time in three years. It seemed everything was turning dark.

由第一段中的“He’d been sent down to the minors. Again. For the eighth time in three years. It seemed everything was turning dark. 似乎一切都变暗了)”和第七段中的“His career was on the line.”可知,Wade LeBlanc第八次被送去培训,觉得人生黑暗,说明他事业岌岌可危,“His career was on the line.”
由第八段中的“The next day, in Tucson, LeBlanc met his pitch coach. He said he was thinking about improving his windup. His coach agreed. Instead of keeping his hands tight to his chest at the beginning of his delivery, LeBlanc raised them briefly over his head, as the taxi driver had suggested.
由最后一段中的“So sometimes people need to do what Wade LeBlanc did: hear what a taxi driver is offering him and accept it as a gift.

由第三段中的“It’s always been a one-person operation. I could easily take on partners or scale up the business some more, but I want to keep it this way for now (这一直是一个人的业务。
由最后一段中的“His real interest lies in aviation (航空). Aviation.

Then we should stay focused and go after our dreams.
61.Dear Chris,
I feel delighted to know that your city is going to hold such a speech competition about Chinese Festival to promote Australians’ awareness of Chinese culture. I’m writing to recommend the Dragon Boat Festival among so many traditional festivals as follows.
The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar. This festival is to be in memory of the death of QU Yuan, an poet and statesman who is said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river.
The most important activity of this festival is the Dragon Boat races. It symbolizes people’s attempts to rescue Qu Yuan. In the current period, these races also demonstrate the virtues of cooperation and teamwork.Besides, the festival has also been marked by eating zong zi . People who are in memory of the death of Qu threw Zong zi into the river to feed his ghost every year. With the changes of the times, the memorial turns to be a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of year.
If you need more information about other Chinese traditional festivals, don’t hesitate to ask me for help.Wish you success in the competition.
Yours,
Li Jin
