“Show, Not Tell”------ What and why
“Show, not tell,” becomes incredibly significant when dealing with emotional writing.Telling is simply stating an emotion, such as, ‘Riley was sad.’ Whereas showing involves providing the reader with enough descriptive details to infer the emotion, like, ‘Riley’s shoulders slumped, her gaze fixed on the floor.’ Showing allows the reader to experience the emotion alongside the character, fostering a deeper connection.
The technique follows describing the sensory details of characters and the actions or the situation occurring in the story encouraging readers to involve their own minds and senses in experiencing emotions.
