When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Doctor Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard, but was always very kind.
When Doctor Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He had some interesting theories about planting trees. He hardly watered his new trees, an attitude which flew in the face of conventional wisdom.
Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants spoiled them because it made them grow weaker. He said he had to make things tough for the trees so that only the strongest could survive. He talked about how watering trees made them develop shallow roots and how,if they were not watered, trees would grow deep roots in search of water.
So, instead of watering his trees every morning, he'd beat them with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the trees' attention.
Doctor Gibbs died a couple of years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I'd watched him plant some 25 years ago. They were tall and strong.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I often pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to encounter hardship. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is pray for deep roots, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won't be torn apart.

C.Careful and ambitious. D.Strict and devoted.
27.What does the author learn from Doctor Gibbs

Most online fraud(诈骗)involves identity theft. Passwords help. But many can be guessed. Newer phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers often have strengthened security with fingerprint and facial recognition. But these can be imitated. That is why a new approach, behavioural biometrics(行为生物识别)is gaining ground.
It relies on the wealth of measurements made by today's devices. These include data from sensors that reveal how people hold their phones when using them, how they carry them and even the way they walk. Touchscreens, keyboards and mice can be monitored to show the unique ways in which someone's fingers and hands move. These features can then be used to determine whether someone attempting to make a deal is likely to be the device's habitual user.
“Behavioural biometrics make it possible to identify an individual's unique motion fingerprint,”says John Whaley, head of Unifyid, a firm in Silicon Valley that is involved in the field. When coupled with information about a user's finger pressure and speed on the touchscreen, as well as a device's regular places of use-as revealed by its GPS unit-that user's identity can be pretty well determined.
Used wisely, behavioural biometrics could be a great benefit. In fact, Unifyid and an unnamed car company are even developing a system that unlocks the doors of a vehicle once the pace of the driver, as measured by his phone, is recognized. Used unwisely, however, the system would become yet another electronic spy on people's privacy, permitting complete strangers to monitor your every action, from the moment you reach for your phone in the morning, to when you throw it on the floor at night.
28. What is behavioural biometrics for
A.To identify network crime. B.To ensure network security.
C.To track online fraud. D.To gather online data.
29.How does behavioural biometrics work
A. By offering and analyzing the operating system of devices.
B.By spotting and revealing a device's regular places of use.
C. By restricting and detecting the access to an account of users.
D. By monitoring and comparing the ways users interact with devices.
30. What's the author's attitude towards behavioural biometrics
A.Objective. B.Concerned. C.Doubtful. D.Supportive.
31.From which section of a magazine can this text possibly be taken
A.Health and wealth. B.Books and arts.
C.Science and technology. D.Finance and economics.

A recent study suggests that vitamin D pills can help speed up the time taken for burns to heal, and prevent scarring(结疤).The vitamin, which is produced naturally in the body when the skin is exposed to sunshine, is believed to help protect against burning.
Previous studies have shown that vitamin D pills help decrease redness and swelling after sunburn, and may be one of the reasons why the body produces the chemical.
The research from Birmingham University, has found they may also help relieve other types of burn. Researchers monitored 38 patients who had suffered serious burns for a year and recorded their levels of vitamin D. They found that those with the highest levels of vitamin D had better wound healing and fewer scars.
Professor Janet Lord said:“Low vitamin D levels were associated with worse results in burn patients including life-threatening infections(感染),death and delayed wound healing.Major burn injury severely reduces vitamin D levels and adding this vitamin back may be a simple, safe and cost-effective way to improve the condition for burn patients.” Professor Lord and her team are now focusing on finding out why there is a rapid loss of vitamin D inpatients immediately following burn injury and hope that they may be able to prevent this in future.
The amount of reduction in patients' vitamin D levels was not related to the severity(严重程度)of the burn, so levels may also be decreased in minor burn injury, suggesting taking vitamin D pills could also help people with everyday burns. Public Health England now recommends that all Britons take vitamin D pills in the winter because it is impossible to make sufficient quantities in the darker months.
32.What does the new study find
A. People with low vitamin D levels get burned easily.
B. Vitamin D helps with the recovery from burn injury.
C. Vitamin D pills aid in reducing the swelling from burns.
D. Vitamin D is more beneficial to serious burns than minor burns.
33. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A. The severity of one's burn reflects his vitamin D levels.
B. Vitamin D pills are more needed in the autumn months.
C. Minor burns have no effect on patients' vitamin D levels.
D. Burn patients lacking vitamin D are at high risk of infection.
34. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.Vitamin D pills. B.The researchers.
C.Previous studies. D.Some kinds of vitamins.
35.Which of the following can be the best title of the text

参考范文
Carol then found herself in the city with her friends. Carol and her friends went to watch movies. After that they ate delicious food in a restaurant and shopped in a huge mall. Carol was happy that she had the chance to experience the life in the city. Yet at the same time, she understood that everything told by her grandmother was true in the city. There was no peace and no silence; the city life was fast and rushing. The air quality was not satisfying. She could hardly find any animal or even a tree.
Carol's brother Rob was calling her for lunch and Carol woke up. She recalled what happened just now in her dream and realized that her life in the village with her family was far more wonderful than the city life. Carol understood that she was having a more joyful life. She shared her dream with her family while enjoying the fresh fruits and vegetables, and they laughed together. Carol also developed a love for plants, animals and beautiful nature.

Before I came to Finland to attend this meeting two weeks ago, I had no idea what kind of clothes I should take along. Fortunately, my friend Julia has been to Northern Europe. Yes, she was a great help. She bought me some warm suits and dresses, business type of clothes,of course, of dark colours. She also bought me some skirts and blouses so that I could wear the same clothes in several different ways. Lively coloured dresses will give me a nice change from time to time. She also helped to choose a very warm raincoat and a pair of boots. Oh, how lucky I am to have such a helpful friend. She saved me a lot of trouble.
