Beauty in Common Things
Each different part of China has its own special forms of traditional art. These usually try to show the things that are important in life, such as love, beauty and family. The most common things, from paper to clay to bamboo, are turned into objects of beauty.
According to Chinese history, sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming. He sent them out to ask for help when in trouble. Today, sky lanterns are used at festivals and other celebrations. They are made of bamboo and covered with paper. When the lanterns are lit, they slowly rise into the air like small hot-air balloons for all to see. They are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes. Paper cutting has been around for over 1,500 years.
Paper cutting sounds very easy but it can be difficult to do. The paper, usually red, is folded before it is cut with scissors. The most common pictures are flowers, animals, and things about Chinese history. During the Spring Festival, they are put on windows, doors and walls as symbols of wishes for good luck and a happy new year.
Chinese clay art is famous because the clay pieces are so small but they look very real. The pieces are usually cute children or lively characters from a Chinese fairy tale or historical story. The pieces are carefully shaped by hand from a very special kind of clay and then allowed to air-dry. After drying, they are fired at a very high heat. They are then polished and painted. It takes several weeks to complete everything. These small pieces of clay art show the love that all Chinese people have for life and beauty.

Words in the Snow
In the time of the Yellow Emperor, there were no written words. People recorded things by tying knots (打结)in ropes and carving (雕刻) shapes on stone walls. One day, the Yellow Emperor discussed an event with a wise man named Cang Jie. Cang took out a piece of knotted rope, but found it was rotten (腐烂的). It was impossible for him to remember the event clearly. Then he turned to a stone wall, but could hardly read the shapes on it. They had been carved by another person except himself.
“The ropes will be rotten. And the shapes can only be read by a few people, "the emperor said to Cang. “Can you come up with something better ”
Cang thought over the matter for days and nights. On the morning after a heavy snowfall, the earth was completely white. He saw the footmarks of some different animals by accident. These footmarks helped him to recognize what animals had passed by. Cang suddenly had an idea. He picked a stick and drew on the snow-covered ground. He first drew a tiger and a bear to show that they had passed by. But soon, he found this was taking too much time. He realized that he had to make the drawings easier.
All the shapes on the stone walls flashed through his mind. Cang kept making all kinds of shapes on the ground easier. To show the sun, for example, he used a circle with a dot(小点)in the middle. A half-circle and a vertical line (竖线)made up the moon. And three curves(曲线)were used to show water. Later, the sun appeared. These simple marks shone brightly in the snow.
In the end, Cang created a whole set of symbols to record things. People could easily understand these symbols. Since then, they have been able to record their own history.

Along with firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce and vinegar, tea is considered one of the seven necessities for life in China. Now, it has also become a shard cultural treasure of mankind (人类).
It is said that tea was first discovered by Shen Nong, a famous ruler of ancient China about 5,000 years ago. He was sitting under a tree waiting for his water to boil. Then a tea leaf fell into his pot and became tea. The ancient Tea Horse Road made tea popular around China. Tibetan people needed to sell their horses for tea from other parts of China. Lu Yu (733 -804), a scholar from the Tang Dynasty, is often known as “Tea Saint”. His book Cha Jing is known to be the first written record of tea culture in the world. It teaches people how to choose, make and drink tea.
More importantly, China’s tea culture has social practices. Since ancient times, Chinese people have been planting, picking, making and drinking tea. It is a traditional Chinese custom that a host should welcome visiting guests with boiled tea. Boiling tea is one of the oldest Chinese tea brewing methods (煮沏法). Tea leaves were boiled for a long time and sometimes they were cooked together with different kinds of fruits. During this process, people can enjoy a quiet time.
However, the old method is now making a comeback among Chinese young people. On the app Xiaohongshu, or Little Red Book, there are over 40,000 posts on the topic of “stove-boiled”tea (围炉煮茶). People sit around the stove in a natural setting and have snacks with their hot tea. Some also wear traditional hanfu as if it could take them back to those ancient times. Through “stove-boiled” tea, people can taste a slower life and find their inner peace. As is written in one Xiaohongshu post. “It is very relaxing to drink hot tea and chat with best friends.”
