B
My earliest memories are of having two very old parents. My mother was 42 when I was born, which back then was seriously old to have a baby, and a little risky too. My oldest brother was 14 years older than me and the middle brother ten years older. When I was quite small they had both left home. I grew up almost like an only child. I tended to amuse myself and play in the garden and draw and paint and shoot. I suppose you do learn as an only child that you’re going to have to get on with life by yourself. You’re going to have to find things that excite and move you.
I was shipped off to Sunday school in Edinburgh when I was seven years old. I felt a proper Charlie, because I was the only little boy among the Sunday school children who was wearing a kilt I also felt rather threatened by the stories we were taught. Old-school Christianity was filled with punishment and anger that I didn’t really enjoy. For the rest of my attendance at Sunday school, I didn’t get closer than climbing a tree outside the church and hiding in the branches, waiting until the children came out, then dropping down to join the school team and walking out of the church to be met by my parents, who were then reassured that I’d been to Sunday school as I was supposed to.
When my parents moved to Blackpool, my aunt, who came to live with us, took me to two or three concerts. I got to see Cliff Richard, Adam Faith and the early Rolling Stones performing at Blackpool’s ABC Theatre-which, when I was 12 years old, was an important moment of recognising that that isn’t what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, because the music they played was not what I was enjoying. I was drawn to the blues and Black American folk music. It felt very real and human.
4. What do we know about the author’s childhood
A. Many things moved him. B. He had to do many things on his own.
C. He liked playing in the garden. D. He got on badly with his brothers.
5. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined phrase “a proper Charlie” in paragraph 2
A. A real fool. B. An independent child.
C. A capable student. D. A clever student.
6. What experiences did the author have in his Sunday school
A. He liked wearing a kilt. B. He often studied in the trees.
C. He was threatened by others. D. He was often absent from school.
7. What can we infer from the text
A. His brothers were not important to him. B. He never walked into the church.
C. His parents took him to some concerts. D. The blues caught his interest.
B 5. A 6. D 7. D
根据第一段“I tended to amuse myself and play in the garden and draw and paint and shoot. I suppose you do learn as an only child that you’re going to have to get on with life by yourself. You’re going to have to find things that excite and move you.(我喜欢自娱自乐,在花园里玩耍,画画,射击。我想,作为家中唯一的孩子,你确实学会了必须独自生活。你必须找到让你兴奋和感动的东西)”可知,作者童年不得不自己做很多事情。故选B。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“because I was the only little boy among the Sunday school children who was wearing a kilt (因为我是主日学校孩子中唯一一个穿着苏格兰方格呢短裙的小男孩)”可知,作者是主日学校里唯一一个穿苏格兰裙的小男孩,所以作者觉得自己像个傻瓜。 故选A。
根据第二段“For the rest of my attendance at Sunday school, I didn’t get closer than climbing a tree outside the church and hiding in the branches, waiting until the children came out, then dropping down to join the school team and walking out of the church to be met by my parents, who were then reassured that I’d been to Sunday school as I was supposed to.(在我去主日学校的其余时间里,我爬上教堂外的一棵树,躲在树枝里,等孩子们出来,然后下车加入学校的队伍,走出教堂,迎接我的父母,然后我向他们保证,我已经按照预期上了主日学校)”可知,作者在主日学校的其余时间里,都躲在树上等着下课,可得出作者经常缺课。
根据最后一段“I was drawn to the blues and Black American folk music.(我被蓝调和美国黑人民间音乐所吸引)”可推知,蓝调引起了他的兴趣。故选D。
C
Scientists have reported that the sea ice in Antarctica (南极) is at a record low level. Antarctica is a great, icy land, surrounded (围绕) by the huge Southern Ocean. The ice in Antarctica doesn’t just cover the land. There’s also a large area of sea ice on the ocean’s surface.
Every year, the sea ice at the South Pole goes through a cycle. In the summer, the huge sea ice melts (融化) to its smallest point. Over the colder winter months, the sea ice grows and grows until it covers a wide area. Usually, the sea ice covers the greatest area around September 23, as winter ends at the South Pole.
Scientists have been measuring the area of the sea ice in Antarctica since 1979. For most of this time, Antarctica has seemed to be almost unaffected by the changing weather conditions experienced in other parts of the globe. That began to change around 2016. Now, for several years, the area of Antartica’s sea ice has been shrinking.
This year, the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) reported that Antartica’s sea ice covered its greatest area on September 10 — almost two weeks earlier than normal. And the sea ice was at a new record low-not just by a little bit, but by a lot.
The last time Antartica’s low sea ice set a record at the end of winter was in 1986. And this year, there’s about 398, 000 square miles less sea ice than in 1986.
Scientists are still trying to understand what is driving the change in Antarctica. One likely direct cause for the change is the rising temperatures of the world’s oceans. Ted Scambos, a research scientist at the University of Colorado, says Antarctica’s ice levels have always changed some, but the sharp loss this year is “pointing towards warmer ocean conditions around the continent.”
The new low record has concerned the scientists. Scientists are working hard to better understand Antarctica. They don’t know yet if this is just a short-term problem, or part of a long-term shift (转变) towards less sea ice in Antarctica.
8. What does the underlined word “shrinking” mean in Paragraph 3
A. Getting smaller. B. Being flat. C. Observed. D. Measured.
9. Why does the author mention the record in 1986
A. To give an example. B. To make a comparison.
C. To make a summary. D. To offer an argument.
10. What is the possible direct reason for the change in Antarctica’s sea ice
A. The changing weather conditions. B. Human activities in Antarctica.
C. Increased volcanic activities in the area. D. The increasing temperatures of the global oceans.
11. How do scientists feel about the low record
A. Worried. B. Annoyed. C. Excited. D. Satisfied.
A 9. B 10. D 11. A
根据第一段“Scientists have reported that the sea ice in Antarctica (南极) is at a record low level.(科学家报告说,南极洲的海冰处于历史最低水平)”以及第三段“Scientists have been measuring the area of the sea ice in Antarctica since 1979. For most of this time, Antarctica has seemed to be almost unaffected by the changing weather conditions experienced in other parts of the globe. That began to change around 2016.(自1979年以来,科学家们一直在测量南极洲的海冰面积。在这段时间的大部分时间里,南极洲似乎几乎没有受到全球其他地区气候变化的影响。这种情况在2016年左右开始改变)”可知,大部分时间南极的海冰没有受到全球其他地区天气变化的影响。但是从2016年往后出现了变化,说明海冰开始减少,变得更小了。故划线词意思是“变得更小”。故选A。
根据第五段“The last time Antartica’s low sea ice set a record at the end of winter was in 1986. And this year, there’s about 398, 000 square miles less sea ice than in 1986.(上一次南极洲的海冰在冬末创下纪录是在1986年。今年,海冰面积比1986年减少了39.8万平方英里)”可推知,作者提到1986年的记录是为了拿现在和之前的数据作对比。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段“One likely direct cause for the change is the rising temperatures of the world’s oceans.(造成这种变化的一个可能的直接原因是全球海洋温度的上升)”可知,一个可能的直接原因是全球海洋的温度上升。
根据最后一段中“The new low record has concerned the scientists.(新的最低记录引起了科学家们的担忧)”可推知,科学家对此非常担忧。故选A。
D
In many restaurants worldwide, there’s a new sight — child-sized robots. These robots can welcome guests, show them to their tables, deliver food and drinks, and even transport dirty dishes back to the kitchen. Some believe these robot waiters could be a solution to today’s worker shortages (短缺,不足) in the restaurant industry, with tens of thousands of them now in use.
But other people think that robots can’t replace (取代) human workers. Robot waiters can’t take orders, and they struggle with steps, limiting their abilities.
Although there are disadvantages, their use is growing. For example, in Madison Heights, Michigan, Li Zhai faced difficulty finding enough workers for his restaurant. To address this, he bought robots from Pudu Robotics. These robots have been a success, with one leading guests to their seats, another delivering food, and a third transporting dirty dishes.
Zhai found that using these robots reduced his need for employees. Three robots now do the work of what used to need five or six people. And a robot costs around $15,000, while a human can cost 5,000 to 6,000 per month. These robots also have a surprising benefit—they free up human servers to spend more time with customers, resulting in increased tips. Additionally, diners (用餐者) often share videos of the robots on social media, attracting more visitors to the restaurant.
However, not all restaurants have had the same success. For example, Chili’s (奇利斯餐厅) introduced robot servers in 2020, but were criticized (批评) for their slow movement and getting in the way of human servers. A survey showed that 58% of guests believed the robots didn’t improve their overall dining experience.
12. What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To discuss the advantages of hiring human workers in restaurants.
B. To describe the shortages of child-sized robots in restaurants.
C. To show the success of robot waiters in restaurants.
D To introduce a survey about robot waiters.
13. What does the underlined word “address” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. narrow B. solve C. face D. explore
14. According to Paragraph 4, what is Zhai’s attitude towards robot servers
A. Uncaring. B. Dissatisfied. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
15 What can be inferred from the passage
A. The use of robot waiters still has a long way to go.
B. All restaurants with robot servers are successful.
C. The restaurant industry is not affected by worker shortages.
D. Restaurant bosses won’t employ robot waiters.
C 13. B 14. C 15. A

根据文章第一段“In many restaurants worldwide, there’s a new sight — child-sized robots. These robots can welcome guests, show them to their tables, deliver food and drinks, and even transport dirty dishes back to the kitchen. Some believe these robot waiters could be a solution to today’s worker shortages in the restaurant industry, with tens of thousands of them now in use.(在世界各地的许多餐馆里,都有一种儿童大小的新型机器人。
根据划线单词上文“Although there are disadvantages, their use is growing. For example, in Madison Heights, Michigan, Li Zhai faced difficulty finding enough workers for his restaurant.(尽管有这些缺点,但它们的使用正在增长。例如,在密歇根州的麦迪逊高地,Li Zhai的餐馆很难找到足够的工人。)”可知,Li Zhai的餐馆很难找到足够的工人,结合划线单词下文“These robots have been a success, with one leading guests to their seats, another delivering food, and a third transporting dirty dishes.(这些机器人已经取得了成功,其中一个将客人带到座位上,另一个提供食物,第三个运送脏盘子。)”
根据第四段中的“Zhai found that using these robots reduced his need for employees. Three robots now do the work of what used to need five or six people. And a robot costs around $15,000, while a human can cost $5,000 to $6,000 per month. These robots also have a surprising benefit — they free up human servers to spend more time with customers, resulting in increased tips. Additionally, diners(用餐者)often share videos of the robots on social media, attracting more visitors to the restaurant.(Zhai发现,使用这些机器人减少了他对员工的需求。
根据尾段中的“However, not all restaurants have had the same success. For example, Chili’s (奇利斯餐厅) introduced robot servers in 2020, but were criticized (批评) for their slow movement and getting in the way of human servers. A survey showed that 58% of guests believed the robots didn’t improve their overall dining experience.(然而,并不是所有的餐馆都取得了同样的成功。例如,Chili’s在2020年推出了机器人服务器,但因移动缓慢和妨碍人类服务器而受到批评。一项调查显示,58%的客人认为机器人并没有改善他们的整体用餐体验。)”可知,并不是所有的机器人服务员都取得了成功并列句了实例和调查的结果,由此推知,机器人服务员的使用还有很长的路要走。故选A项。

After over 10 years of dreaming and planning and 18 months of very serious considering, my husband and I finally bought a farmhouse about a mile from where I grew up. Neither my husband, David, nor myself had any experience with decoration, but we jumped in with much excitement. There was much to be done before the winter came to knock at our door. We rearranged the garden, laid out the lawn (草坪), and set all the furniture in place. Then there remained only one thing to worry us: We didn’t have a fireplace (壁炉) indoors against the extremely winter.
I knew the perfect choice of person for the work is my uncle, Richard Jones. Being a senior construct worker (建筑工人) for almost 40 years, he could do the job better than anyone else. On thinking of the idea that my house would be in my uncle’s hands, my heart was filled with expectation and comfort. The problem was that he lived far away in Florida, about an 18-hour drive from our home in Cortland. Another problem was the cost of building a fireplace. Buying the farmhouse cost almost all our savings, so could we even afford to pay him
Much to my relief, the drive turned out to be no problem at all. On receiving my call, my uncle, at the age of 65, loaded his suitcase and his tools into his truck and headed to our place. When I asked how much he would charge, he replied, “We’ll figure up a price when the job is finished. Just have coffee and cookies ready when I get there. The more you bake cookies, the lower the price will be.”
My uncle wasn’t joking. As long as I had served coffee and cookies, he could work pleasantly. The man was obviously born with a sweet tooth. For two weeks, the coffee machine never stopped, and the cookies often disappeared before I could put them into the cookie box.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The construction was slowly coming to an end.

I found the paycheck (工资) lying quietly next to the coffee machine.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The construction was slowly coming to an end. Finally, a perfect fireplace appeared before our eyes, with its well designed looks. Full of gratitude, we showed sincere thanks to my uncle, who was engaged in the construction for two weeks. In spite of his refusal, we insisted on him receiving a paycheck. Several days later, he loaded his tools and left our farmhouse, leaving us warmth and love against the bitter winter. After seeing him off, I headed for the living room for a cup of coffee, but what I spotted astonished me.
I found the paycheck (工资) lying quietly next to the coffee machine. Beside it was a note which read, “Dear, you have paid for the fireplace with all the delicious coffee and cookies.” Seeing that, tears of gratitude welled up in my eyes. Holding the paycheck, I could feel the deep love and care from my uncle. Every time we gathered around the fireplace enjoying the warmth, I would thought of the man with a sweet tooth. It was my uncle that taught me the value of giving, which I would treasure forever.

A. Worried. B. Annoyed. C. Excited. D. Satisfied.

D. To introduce a survey about robot waiters.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The construction was slowly coming to an end.
