The Caofeidian Wetland lies in Tangshan, Hebei Province. It is an important place for migratory(迁徙的) birds.

Ⅲ阅读理解
语篇类型:说明文 主题:人与自然(动物)
难度: 词数:约290 用时:7分钟数:
In order to watch oriental white storks, I went to the Caofeidian Wetland on November 10. Luckily, as soon as I got there, I found a large number of oriental white storks looking for food in the wetland. They were too far away from me. I couldn't get close to them. So I used a pair of binoculars(双筒望远镜) to see them more clearly.
They were about 1.2 metres tall with long hard black beaks and broad wings. They had long red legs and long thin necks. Their bodies were covered with white feathers, and their wings were grey and black. They looked so beautiful that I couldn't help taking many photos of them.
The oriental white storks used to be common in East Asia several hundred years ago. We could see them in the wild easily at that time. They lived in wetlands and they mainly caught small fish for food. In winter, they flew to the wetlands along the Changjiang River in China.
However, as the population grew larger and larger, the space for them became less and less. They couldn't find enough food to eat. What's worse, some people even killed them for money. As a result, the number of them has become very small. At present, there are only about 9,000 oriental white storks in the world. They are in great danger.
The good news is that they are now strictly protected by law. And more and more people have already realized the importance of protecting them.

A new study said, hundreds of animal species are dying out(灭绝) because it takes them a long time to get help from CITES. Over a quarter of animals are among the world's most seriously endangered animals. They are on the IUCN's Red List, but they are not protected by CITES.
CITES is an important tool for stopping animals from dying out in the international wildlife trade. It was set up in 1975 in order to regulate(规范) trade in wildlife products, and stop people from selling and buying endangered animals or their body parts.①
The study showed that some species wait for a long time to get recognition(认可) of CITES. Even among the endangered animals on the IUCN's Red List, 62 percent of those protected by CITES waited as long as 19 years for recognition. Some of them are still waiting to be listed up to 24 years after being first considered.②
The researchers said the slow recognition of CITES was the same even for the most endangered species. The team collected information on 958 endangered animals in the international wildlife trade. They wanted to know how the animals were put into different groups by the IUCN and treated by CITES. Later, they found 28.2 percent of species on the IUCN's Red List were not listed by CITES. The researchers said the result was striking.
They couldn't believe it when they knew it at first.③
I think that's because CITES might have information that the IUCN doesn't have, or because there may not be enough workers or tools at the IUCN. However, I consider it a serious problem because it will make a great number of endangered animals die out. We should try our best to protect them.④

Dinosaurs weren't the only animals that lived millions of years ago. Other creatures also lived on Earth. But then a huge planet hit the Earth. Dust from the explosion(爆炸) filled the air, forming a cold and dark environment around creatures for a long time. Green plants died, so animals could not find any food to eat. As a result, the dinosaurs died, but some fish and birds are still alive. One of them is a large fish called sturgeon(鲟鱼).

Sturgeons can live more than 100 years or even longer. They can weigh as much as 800 pounds and grow to 14 feet long. Most of the sturgeons live in rivers and lakes. They are bottom-feeders. They eat small creatures that live in sand and earth. Even in the very cold weather, sturgeons can find food. In this way, they have lived on Earth for millions of years.
The past 100 years have brought a new challenge for these fish. People around the world like to eat delicious eggs of some fish. These eggs are called caviar. The most popular kind of caviar is sturgeon eggs. Since people ate millions of sturgeon eggs, few baby sturgeons were born.
By the 1990s, sturgeons almost disappeared. But luckily, the government passed some new laws to stop overfishing and control the selling of caviar. Protections like these help the number of sturgeons grow again, but it will take a long time. These ancient fish have been around for millions of years. Let's work together to make sure they still live on Earth. So we can see more sturgeons in the future.
