When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals and other projects began to be built in my village, “Who are they ” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied.
Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.
Thank those good men who have devoted themselves to the development of our countryside.

But in the old days it was a poor and backward (落后的) little town. Many people had no work. They lived a hard life. There was no tall building and the only street was narrow. But trees and flowers made the town beautiful. Just outside the town, there was a river. You could see different kinds of fish swimming in the clear water. People here lived a simple life.
Since a new policy (政策) was taken by the government, great changes have taken place there. The streets have been widened. Factories, schools, hospitals, cinemas and theatres have been built one after another. People’s life is greatly improved. You can see tall buildings, big department stores and factories everywhere. Different kinds of cars and buses are running in the wide streets.
But with the development of the industry (工业), we have fewer trees.Air and water pollution is becoming more and more serious. And there are also other problems. We should try our best to make it richer. At the same time, we must do something to stop pollution and make our town even more beautiful.

I have returned to my hometown of Wilson Creek after an absence of 10 years. So many things have changed around here. When I left Wilson Creek, there was a small lake in the south-east of the town. They have filled in the lake and built a large shopping mall and a swimming pool there. They have also built a new post office just across from my old school.

In the past, 398 residents (居民)in the village of Ushkaplun in Xinjiang had difficulty in getting safe drinking water. They had to walk along the mountain road for two hours to the nearest water source. The water was not clean. They used only gauze (纱布)to filter the water. It was not a strange thing for the residents in the village to fall sick after drinking the water.
Now, however, all the villagers can enjoy clean drinking water straight from the tap at home. Taking a shower used to be something of a luxury (奢侈), but now the villagers can enjoy one every day. The tap water has made their lives much more convenient.
The change happened in 2018. The local government spent almost 9 million yuan building a project to provide water for the village. It took water from a spring (泉) at an altitude of 3,500 meters. There were huge difficulties in building the project because large machines could not enter the area. The workers had to depend on horses to move materials in. Sometimes, they had to carry materials themselves.
This was one of many projects to provide clean drinking water for the residents in the countryside. Before 2020, in southern Xinjiang alone, the residents in 67 villages couldn’t use tap water. To supply them with safe drinking waters the workers had to overcome lots of difficulties. First of all, there was no suitable local water source because the water there wasn’t fit for drinking. After a long period of surveying and researching, they decided to get water from more than 100 kilometers away to meet the needs of the 470.000 residents in Payzawat .
The great project began in May 2019. and on May 20, 2020, the last part of the project was completed. A time of safe drinking water began for the residents in the area. More than 90 percent of the residents in the countryside now use tap water, up from 71 percent in 2015.

Xuwen, a small town in the south of Guangdong, is called the “hometown of pineapples (菠萝)” in China. One in three pineapples sold in the country comes from this place. There, farmers produced nearly 700,000 tonnes of pineapples in 2021. But what makes Xuwen so successful
