Brownie and Spotty were neighbor dogs. They loved each other and played together so they made a road through the grass between their houses.

He felt the need to do something. So he started the company Chop Value in the same year. The company collected used chopsticks from restaurants, schools and shopping centers in Canada and the US and turned them into furniture(家具)and other artworks. Now, with the rapid growth of the company, Bock employs 40 people, and using his special methods of steam(蒸汽)and press machines, he has recycled 32 million pairs of chopsticks.
Bock takes pride in his work. And he hopes the idea behind Chop Value will help people rethink what they see as waste. “I believe every small action can help,” he said. “And I am happy that my business provides a new way for people.” Hundreds of restaurants across North America pay some money to Bock for the recycling of their used chopsticks. 78-year-old Li Zhenhai has been greening mountains for over 30 years. In all, he has completed the afforestation(植树造林)of more than 2,000 mu of land and has planted more than 600,000 trees. Over the years, he has donated young trees worth more than 4 million yuan. He was awarded the title of National Model of Greening and Afforestation in 2006, and received the National Green Gold Great Wall Medal in 2018.
Li was born in 1944 in Shandong province. In 1973, he came to Daur to visit relatives. To pass time, he collected mushrooms, fungus and hazelnuts and earned more than 300 yuan a week. That was what he used to earn in his hometown in a year. So he decided to stay there a live a better life.
In the following years, Li and his wife lived a quiet and comfortable life by farming. But a sudden rainstorm in 1980 washed away their land. Therefore, he decided to plant trees to make a living and protect the local environment.
Seeing he was strong-willed, his wife decided to go up into the mountains with him.
Life in the mountains was very hard. There was no electricity and mosquitoes were everywhere. There were no vegetable fields, so they had to pick wild vegetables to feed themselves. They had little for rest. Planting trees in spring is the hardest. Every morning, they had to move the young trees up to the mountain, and work for more than 10 hours every day.
What’s worse, because of a lack of(缺乏)technology and planting experience, less than 10% of the young trees could survive in the first seven years. So Li began to read various forestry magazines. Their hard work attracted support from the local government including technology and money. Thanks to that, more than 95% of the pine trees could grow well.
They have also put their experience in planting trees in a guidebook to share with the villagers, to encourage others to take up afforestation.
And now Li Zhenhai’s biggest wish is that everyone plants a few trees every year. He believes the desert will finally become an oasis by doing this.

Like all the planets in our solar system, Earth and Mars go around the sun. But Earth is closer to the sun, and therefore revolves along its orbit(轨道) quickly. Earth makes two trips around the Sun in about the same amount of time that Mars takes to make one trip. So sometimes the two planets are on the opposite sides of the Sun, very far apart, and other times, Earth catches up with its neighbor and passes relatively close to it.
Since Mars and the Sun appear on opposite sides of the sky, we say that Mars is in “opposition”. Mars oppositions happen about every 26 months. Every 15 or 17 years, opposition occurs within a few weeks of Mars’ perihelion(近日点).
An opposition can occur anywhere along Mars’ orbit. When it happens while the red planet is closest to the sun (called “perihelic opposition”), Mars is particularly close to Earth. If Earth and Mars both had perfectly stable orbits, then each perihelic opposition would bring the two planets as close as they could be. So, with all these added factors, some bring us closer together than others. The 2003 opposition was the closest approach in almost 60,000 years!
Mars’ orbit is more elliptical(椭圆的) than Earth’s, so the difference between perihelion and aphelion(远日点) is greater, Mars’ orbit has been getting more and more elongated, carrying the planet even nearer to the Sun at perihelion and even farther away at aphelion. So future perihelic oppositions will bring Earth and Mars even closer. Our 2003 record will stand until August 28, 2287!

On the north coast of Brazil, scientists once found something very strange—lost penguins (企鹅), far from home! The scientists did not know why the penguins were lost. Perhaps a warm current (水流) took them north. But penguins cannot live for long in the warmer waters of the north. It was time to save the penguins.
Sadly though, some penguins were too sick to travel, and some were dying. The scientists took the healthy birds and put them on a large aircraft. They flew to the south coast of Brazil. Many people came to watch the birds. But at first, the birds just looked at the water. Then some of the braver ones swam about in it. It was cold. It was good.
And so they began the last part of their journey. People cheered loudly as the younger penguins started swimming behind the older ones. Together, they were on their way home at last.

Would you like to have an electric car We will see this kind of cars soon in America. These quiet, clean cars run on electricity. Carmakers will start selling electric cars in 2011.
The world’s population will jump from 6.8 billion to 9 billion by 2050. The need for cars will jump with it. But the oil(石油) won’t keep up with the number of cars on the road. So the price of oil will go up.
Electric cars aren’t perfect just yet. It can take eight hours to charge(充电) a car for only 100 miles of driving. And the distance(路程) that cars can go depends on driving conditions(条件). How far it travels depends on the weather and traffic.
Price is a problem, too. Electric models cost much more than oil-powered cars. The good news is that electric-car technology is getting better. As it does, the prices of this kind of cars are dropping.
To charge the car, the US Department of Energy is paying for at least 10,000 charging stations around the country. Private businesses are also getting ready for it. It will cost about $3 for each charge.
Carmakers are coming up with other ways to make the car cleaner and cheaper. Cars may run on clean diesel(柴油). So who knows what will power the car you may be driving in 10 years The chances are that it will be something that’s clean and easy.

B.nobody knows what will power the cars in 10 years
C.electric cars will be used by most people in 10 years
Plants are a very important kind of life. Plants cover most land. They can be big or small and come in many colors, but they are not animals. Trees, flowers, grasses, and bushes (灌木) are common plants.
How are animals and plants different Plants usually can’t move. Plants breathe a different kind of air than people and animals do. Plants make their own food from water, sunlight, and the soil. Plants can’t talk. Plants don’t think. Plants usually make more plants, or reproduce, with seeds (种子).
How are animals and plants the same They both have body parts that do jobs. Animals eat food, but plants “eat” sunlight with their leaves and “drink” with their roots (根). Animals grow from babies to adults (成人), and plants grow from seeds to adults.

40.This passage mainly tells us ________.
A.something about plants B.where plants come from
C.how plants grow into adults D.the differences between animals and plants
Plants are very important living things. Life could not go on if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. Therefore animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us.
If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants.
Flowering plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit.
Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores (胚芽). Spores are very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as seeds. When these spores are all on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants.

A.plants are important for life
B.plants cannot grow without air
C.there are many plants in the world
D.we can not live without water
42.What can we infer(推断) from the passage
