Climate change continues to affect us. Many small islands around the world face the risk of
disappearing into the _41_ . In Fiji, an island country in the Pacific, hundreds of communities
need to relocate(搬迁 ) because of climate change, including the village on Serua Island. _42_ ,
most of Serua Island's people have chosen to stay because they love their land and their _43_ .
“Our ancestors(祖先) chose to live and stay on the island _44_ they could be close to our
chief(酋长),”one local told the Conversation Media Group.
The decision to stay is because of a deep sense of _45_ to their chief, their ancestors and the
ocean. For many people there, the ocean around Serua Island is not just a source of making a
living—it is a source of belonging(归属感) and cultural significance(意义).
Moreover, relocating also might change who they think they are and their way of life. Each
family's connection to the land is marked by a foundation(基础) stone, symbolizing(象征着) their
_46_ and traditions.“In the past, when a foundation of a home was created, they named it, and that
was _47_ our ancestors were buried(埋葬) as well. Their ___48_, sweat, tears, hard work are all
buried in the foundation,”a local told the website phys.org .
Serua Islanders are worried that relocating to other places would _49_ the bond(纽带) they
have with their chief, and the ocean. They fear relocation would lead to loss of theiridentity,
culture and love for their hometown.
These hard decisions are not just limited to Fiji, but _50_ . As climate change quickens,
governments must realize that relocation is not always the answer. Relocation

Chester Zoo has announced the birth of a critically endangered(严重濒危的 ) western
chimpanzee.
The male chimp is in good health and is spending the first few weeks of his life bonding (建
立互信关系) with his mother, Zee Zee, and the other 22 members of the zoo's chimpanzee group.
He has been named after the pop star Justin(Biber), like three other baby chimpanzees
previously(先前) born at the zoo——Bob(Dylan), Alice (Cooper) and Annie (Lennox).
“We’re incredibly proud to see a precious new baby in the chimpanzee troop. Mum ZeeZee and
her new arrival instantly bonded and she's been doing a great job of caring for him closely,”said
Andrew Lenihan, team manager of the primates section at Chester Zoo.
“A birth always creates a lot of excitement in the group and raising a youngster soon
becomes a real family event.”
“You’ll often see the new baby being passed between other females who want to lend a
helping hand and give ZeeZee some well-deserved rest, and that's exactly what her daughter,
Stevie, is doing with her new brother. It looks as though she's taken a real shine to him, which is
great to see.”
Western chimpanzees are a medium-sized( 中 等 大 小 的 ) subspecies of the common
chimpanzee. They grow to around a metre in length from head to rump and weigh as much as
45kg. They can live for more than 40 years and are well-known for their unusual behaviours.
These include the use of spears(矛) to hunt and catch prey, and a strange habit of throwing large
rocks against trees or into hollow tree stumps.
They are the first subspecies of chimpanzee to be declared critically endangered by the
International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It is estimated that there are just
18,000 individuals left, living from Senegal to Ghana in West Africa. Previous populations in
Benin, Burkina Faso and Togo are now extinct due to habitat loss.
“In the last 25 years alone the world has lost 80 per cent of its western chimpanzee
population, so the arrival of a healthy baby here at Chester is very delightful, which offers us real
hope that we can help turn things around for this species,” said Mike Jordan, animal and plant
director at Chester Zoo.
56. How many chimpanzees are kept in Chester
A.22 B.23 C.24 D.25
57. What's the relationship between Stevie and Justin
A. Mother and son. B. Sister and brother.
{#{QQABQQSQU14owgCKoYAgJNAQAAACRJh5CaAQUlkAQCCwgiQGkQIMkASCLCIoAGIoRGQQABAAuMAwoADASBJFiBAFFAIAB=A}A#=} }#}
C. Wife and husband. D. Babysitter and baby.
58. Which of the following statements about western chimpanzees is TRUE
A. Western chimpanzees don't live in groups.
B. Western chimpanzees are of the biggest size in the chimpanzee family.
C. Male western chimpanzees are responsible for caring for baby chimpanzees.
D. Western chimpanzees are so intelligent that they can hunt animals with spears.
59. What leads to the decrease in the number of western chimpanzees in Benin
A. Less and less food. B. Natural disasters.
C Smaller and smaller habitat. D. Climate change.
60. According to Mike Jordan, why is the birth of Justin so delightful
A. Because it is hard for a western chimpanzee to have a baby.
B. Because it proves that humans can protect this species.
C. Because it was named after the pop star Justin Biber.
D. Because male chimpanzees are rare.

It was at high school that Peter tried running. Recently, he started running again because his
wife, Linda, needed company in her recovery(恢复 ) after injuring her left foot.“We were just
walking at the beginning,”he says.“And I was heavy. I weighed over 100kg.”But as time went by,
the weight fell away, Linda recovered—and Peter’s abilities grew. At the age of 62, he ran 50km,
and at 69, he ran through the night to complete a 100kmultra-marathon(超级马拉松).
So how does someone with no sporting experience become an ultra-distance runner in his
60s Linda had run marathons before her injury. But for Peter, the turning point came when
Linda's Fleet Feet running group took to the trails(路线) in the Sierra Nevada foothills near their
home in Citrus Heights, California.
Peter went out to visit Linda's group, and“the trails were a terrible mess. It had been raining.
And I was running in my road shoes. Slipping and sliding and falling. I was struggling. I thought,
well, I like this a lot but I could do better.”
What he liked above all was the feeling of“being enveloped(包住 ) by the trail, being so
close to nature. I was walking where native people had walked for thousands of years and where
miners(矿工) had walked on their way to gold.”
Running the 100kmultra-marathon took Peter 16 hours. When Peter crossed the finish line
at 3 am, Linda handed him a 100kmsticker to put on the back of his truck. He already had a 50km
one on there.“It is a public proclamation( 声 明 ) that you are part of this community,”he
says.“Wherever we park, I see a line of vehicles with a range of stickers and I feel that we are a
group.”
Peter suffered arthritis(关节炎) before he started running and was advised to replace his knee.
But for now, he is holding off on(推迟) the operation. It could put an end to the running —but
the“sense of accomplishment(成就) will carry me on forever”, he says.“If I can't run,I will walk.”
61. Why did Peter start running again
A. Because he wanted to lose weight.
B. Because he had to exercise his foot.
C. Because his wife encouraged him to do so.
D. Because his wife needed his company in her recovery.
62. The first time Peter visited Linda’s group in the Sierra Nevada foothills, he ________.
