A librarian, whose name is Raden Roro Hendarti in Indonesia’s Java island, is lending books to children in exchange for trash they collect in a special way to clean up the environment and get the kids to read more.
Each weekday Raden Roro Hendarti fills up her three-wheeler with books, and then she rides it to Muntang village. There she exchanges books with the children for plastic cups, bass and other waste that she carries back. She told Reuters (路透社) she is helping develop reading in the kids as well as make them aware of the environment. As soon as she shows up, little children, many accompanied by their mothers, surround her “Trash Library” and exchange for the books.
They are all carrying trash bags and Raden’s three-wheeler quickly fills up with them as the books fly out. She’s happy the kids are going to spend less time on online games as a result. “Let us build a culture of reading from young age to reduce the harm of the online world,” Raden said.
She collects about 100 kg of waste each week, which is then sorted out by her colleagues and sent for recycling or sold. She has 6,000 books to lend and wants to take the mobile service to neighbouring areas as well. She hopes that more and more people can do something to help protect the environment.

Earthquakes are common natural disaster. No matter where you are, knowing how to protect yourself and your family during an earthquake is necessary.
Some expert propose that when you feel the ground is shaking, drop down, take cover under a desk and hold on. Most earthquake injuries are the result of being hit by something falling on you. You should stay indoors until the shaking stops. If you are outdoors, don’t stay near building, trees or power lines. Many people think that in case of an earthquake, they should “get under something” like a doorway or desk, in order to avoid being hurt by falling objects.
Rescue experts now say this is the wrong thing to do. For example, in the 1985 Mexico City earthquakes, they found hundreds of children in schools, crushed by their desks. However, they could have survived by lying in the aisle (通道,走道) next to their desks.
So find a nice piece of furniture, a chair, a sofa, and lie down, or curl up next to it. A falling roof may compact the furniture, but will still leave a space for you to survive next to it. This also holds true if you are in a hotel room, especially at night. Get of the bed, and lie down next to it.
In San Francisco’s 1989 earthquake, the upper freeway fell on the lower one. People who drove along were crushed in their cars. But they had time to get out and lie down next to their cars. Yes, their cars were cashed bur there was space from top to bottom next to the vehicles for people to survive and await a rescue.
Doorways and stairways are very unsafe Slay away from those.
What can we do to keep ourselves safe Saying calm is the first and most important rule when facing accidents.
8. What should you do first when accidents happen according to this passage
A. Get under buildings B. Stay near trees.
C. Keep calm D. Drop down
9. What can we learn from the text
A “Get under something” can avoid being hurt

C. Earthquakes cause great damage.
D. Don’t drive on the upper freeway during an earthquake
10. Which of the following is the closest meaning of the underlined word “crushed” in Paragraph 3
A. hidden B. protected
C. killed D. supported
11. How can we probably get a narrow escape from an earthquake
A. Lie down next to a strong piece of furniture or a car
B. Lie down under a table or desk
C. Run out of the house and stay under a big tree.
D. Shout out loudly and ask for help

A group of second-year college students have discovered hidden writing on a page from a book from the 1500s, using a special camera system they built.
Surprisingly, finding hidden writing on very old documents isn’t all that unusual. In fact, there’s even a special name for documents like this: a palimpsest
Long ago, writing was done on parchment — thin, dried animal skins specially prepared for writing. But parchment wasn’t easy to make and wasn’t cheap. So it became common to erase the old writing off a parchment and then reuse it for another piece of writing. That’s what creates a palimpsest.
The writing erased off the parchment can’t be seen directly, but scientists have learned ways to use special lighting to reveal the original writing. But it’s unusual for young college students to discover palimpsests.
Last year, first-year students at the Rochester Institute of Technology took part in a class that brought together many students to take on a project as a group. The project was to build a special camera system that could take pictures using different kinds of light.
Over the summer, the students working on the imaging camera managed to finish it. When they were done, they borrowed several old parchments from the collection at the school’s Cary Graphic Arts Collection. When they put one of the pages under their camera system with UV light, the hidden writing suddenly appeared. Under the UV light, handwriting in French could easily be seen behind the fancy writing and decorations normally visible on the page.
Zoe, a student involved in the project, said, “This was amazing because this document has been in the Cary Collection for almost 10 years and no one noticed it.” The students are even more excited because even though the parchment is no longer part of a book, they know where 29 other pages from the same book are. The students, who are now working with others to locate the other parchments, hope these, too, will have hidden writing and that they can figure out what it means.
12. What was parchment designed for in ancient times
A. Writing. B. Decorating.
C. Imaging. D. Collecting.
13. What does the underlined word “reveal” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Heat up. B. Bring out.
C. Adjust to. D. Clear away.
14. What are the students expecting to do according to the last paragraph
A. Make a handwriting-recognizing camera.
B. Identify what the parchments are made of.
C. Track the origin of the palimpsests in the Cary Collection.
D. Discover hidden writing and its meaning on more parchments.
15. What’s the purpose of this text
A. To tell about a new discovery. B. To recommend a special book.
C. To explain a cultural phenomenon. D. To introduce an old document.

___19___. They have regular schedules and get up early to study. They squeeze as much into the schedule as they can. More importantly, they learn a way of managing time well and efficiently.

She advises how to write our tasks in a set order on a to-do list.___20___ , because, “Mental health is as important as our physical health.” To White, dancing is something she takes as a reward after completing everything on the list. The summer vacation had just begun, and Alex and Maria were ready to spend all day outside. They decided to walk to the neighborhood park, where there was a river that they liked to swim in when it was particularly hot.
When they got to the river, they saw that it was too deep to swim in. Alex and Maria were disappointed. On the other side of the river, about fifty yards away, there was a fountain from which the water is flowing out. “We should go to play in the fountain,” Maria said. “How will we get there ” asked Alex.
Maria looked around the grassy riverbank and noticed a few logs and branches lying close to the water. “We could build a bridge!” she said. She ran over to a thick log that looked long enough to be placed across the river. Together, she and Alex lifted the log onto their shoulders and walked to the water. Here, they stopped. How would they get the log across
Maria suggested throwing it down into the water and seeing if it reached the other side. That seemed improper to Alex-what if the log did not reach the other side of the river, and got stuck or swept away by the water Then they would be unable to walk all the way across the river.
Maria wondered if they could measure the distance from the riverbank they stood on to the other shore. They put the log carefully down and decided to test the distance with lighter, thinner branches. They found a few branches and they tied the branches together using hair bands.
At their first attempt, they tied two branches together and went back to the river to test the length. The branches only reached the center of the water. After tying two more branches together to the initial branches, Alex and Maria were able to get the thin model bridge to touch the far bank, “Hooray!” Maria said. “Now we know how long the log needs to be.”
They set the tied branches on the ground next to the log.

So find a nice piece of furniture a chair, a sofa, and lie down, or curl up next to it.

根据第三段的“However, they could have survived by lying in the aisle (通道,走道) next to their desks”(然而,如果他们躺在桌子旁边的过道里,就有可能活下来)可知,那些躲在课桌下的孩子被压死 了,因此crushed意为“killed”,故选C。

故填however。
故填which。
which can contribute greatly to making their children feel safe and ___8___ (love)已有谓语can contribute且无连词,动词love用非谓语形式,逻辑主语their children和动词love是动宾关系,此处用过去分词形式表被动,作系动词feel的表语。
故填have done。
on a regular basis为固定搭配,意为“定期”。故填on。

That seemed improper to Alex-what if the log did not reach the other side of the river and got stuck or swept away by the water Then they would be unable to walk all the way across the river.

They set the tied branches on the ground next to the log. The log was luckily the exact length of the tied branches. Seeing that, Alex and Maria were more than delighted and they placed the log across the river with great care. They made it! Then they fixed their side of the log with branches and rocks before they walked across it to reach the other side of the river. Being sure of the log’s firmness, they started to journey their way to the other side of the river as slowly as possible.
Alex and Maria managed to get to the other side of the river. When they got there, they secured the other side of the log with branches and rocks, too, and looked back at their handiwork. It had been a good day’s work, and they were indeed proud of that. It really felt good that they finally succeeded in solving the problem by using their intelligence. Now they were free to enjoy the cool water in the fountain. Despite being wet to the skin, they were as happy as Larry.
