Dragons, a famous imaginary beast born from fantasy, are often present in stories in the west and east. In both cultures, dragons are generally recognized as massive creatures capable of flight. They have great power and are often associated with magical abilities. However, due to their different cultural roots and images, there exist significant differences in the way dragons are regarded in the west and east, particularly in China.
Chinese dragons most resemble snakes, and have four claws and no wings. They often have features of other animals, including carp, tigers, and eagles. In the contrast, Western dragons look like huge lizards with big claws and large bat-like wings, and are often shown with spines or rough scales.
In traditional Chinese culture, a dragon is a symbol of luck, power and high status. They can cause weather changes and bring rainfall to the fields to ensure rich harvests. They are considered divine (神圣的) creatures, which hold an important position as the head of the four spirits. Therefore, to symbolize their power, ancient Chinese emperors decorated their clothes with dragon patterns. These clothes are known as dragon robes. Many Chinese view the dragon as a national symbol, proudly referring to themselves as “descendants of the dragon”. In the west, however, a dragon symbolizes an evil creature that spreads violence and terror throughout the land. They are believed to be transformed by the devil, with the ability to breathe fire or spit poison. Many western tales show dragons being defeated and killed to protect people from danger.
Today, dragons continue to evolve, exceeding traditional boundaries and finding new significance in global culture. They are no longer associated with evil or good, but rather as complex characters with their own unique personalities and motivations. For example, Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon begins as a dangerous dragon but evolves into a misunderstood being with love and compassion. This challenges the idea of dragons as naturally evil, presenting them as complex beings with emotions and motivations.
24. What do western dragons and eastern dragons have in common
A. They have rough skin. B. They are huge and powerful.
C. They are in the shape of snakes. D. They have big claws and wings.
25. What do we know from paragraph 3
A. Western dragons are a symbol of authority.
B. Dragons in China can protect people from danger.
C. Chinese dragons can control rainfall and breathe fire.
D. Dragons are believed to cause chaos in western culture.
26. What is new about dragons in today’s global culture
A. They are regarded as adventurous creatures.
B. They are closely associated with evil or good.
C. They have more diverse emotions and personalities.
D. They tend to represent human spirits facing challenges.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The Dragon Elements in Global Culture
B. The Origin of Dragons in Chinese History
C. The Magical Animals in Different Countries
D. The Images of Dragons in Western Traditions

There are some sounds most of us acknowledge are annoying — the chewing of chips, the low noise of air conditioning or a screaming baby. These noises, for many people, act as a mere inconvenience that can distract them from the task at hand. However, there are some amongst us who have a much more severe response to these noises. Has a noise ever made you feel so angry that you could explode with rage If the answer is yes, you may be suffering from misophonia (恐音症).
The word “misophonia” literally means “a hatred of sound” and is sometimes called Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome. There are some experts who doubt the existence of the condition. However, for those who claim to suffer from it, the experience can be painful. Certain sounds could set off intense emotional or psychological responses that may seem over the top compared with a non-sufferer’s complaints.
The sound of people chewing their food could trigger sufferers’ anxiety, or make them feel panic. It may even activate their fight-or-flight response, making them want to run away. In extreme cases, that feeling of panic may result in intense anger and even end up expressing rage physically.
Sadly, there’s no known cure. But tinnitus retraining therapy, cognitive (认知的) behavioural therapy and counselling could help sufferers tolerate noises and manage the condition. According to James Cartreine, a clinical psychiatrist, the condition can lead to separation. Sufferers use coping strategies that include avoiding places with lots of noises, like restaurants, or moving away when they feel like raging against someone due to their breathing.
So, the next time you see someone fly into a rage because of a sound that is driving them crazy, it may be due to a difficult condition they are trying to manage, and not just because they hate a certain sound.
28. What is the purpose of paragraph 1
A. To lead in the topic of misophonia.
B. To introduce different annoying sounds.
C. To show ways of preventing a severe disease.
D. To present the harm of noises to human health.
29. Who is most likely to suffer from misophonia
A. Jane who usually has lunch alone.
B. Nancy who often screams at her baby.
C. Peter who is always worried about his studies.
D. Henry who is annoyed at the sound of book pages turning.
30. What does the underlined word “trigger” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Control. B. Cause. C. Predict. D. Relieve.
31. What can be inferred about misophonia from the last two paragraphs
A. It happens mostly in restaurants.
B. Any sound around can drive sufferers crazy.
C. Staying away from noises is a potential solution.
D. It may greatly influence sufferers’ cognitive ability.
【答案】28. A 29. D 30. B 31. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了恐音症以及恐音症患者的表现。
【28题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“There are some sounds most of us acknowledge are annoying — the chewing of chips, the low noise of air conditioning or a screaming baby. These noises, for many people, act as a mere inconvenience that can distract them from the task at hand. However, there are some amongst us who have a much more severe response to these noises. Has a noise ever made you feel so angry that you could explode with rage If the answer is yes, you may be suffering from misophonia (恐音症).(我们大多数人都承认有些声音很烦人——咀嚼薯片的声音、空调的低噪音或婴儿的尖叫声。对于许多人来说,这些噪音只是带来不便,可能会分散他们对手头任务的注意力。然而,我们当中有些人对这些噪音的反应要严重得多。是否曾经有过一种噪音让您感到非常愤怒,以至于怒不可遏?如果答案是肯定的,你可能患有恐音症)”可推知,第一段主要是引出恐音症这一话题。故选A。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Has a noise ever made you feel so angry that you could explode with rage If the answer is yes, you may be suffering from misophonia (恐音症).(是否曾经有过一种噪音让您感到非常愤怒,以至于怒不可遏?
根据划线单词下文“It may even activate their fight-or-flight response, making them want to run away. In extreme cases, that feeling of panic may result in intense anger and even end up expressing rage physically.(它甚至可能会激活他们的战斗或逃跑反应,让他们想要逃跑。
根据倒数第二段中“Sufferers use coping strategies that include avoiding places with lots of noises, like restaurants, or moving away when they feel like raging against someone due to their breathing.(患者使用的应对策略包括避开噪音很大的地方,比如餐馆,或者当他们因为呼吸而想对某人发怒时就走开)”可推知,对于恐音症来说,远离噪音是一个潜在的解决方案。故选C。

Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have developed an AI algorithm(算法) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations for the predicted earthquakes.
The research team believes their method succeeded because they stuck with a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background rumblings(隆隆声) in the Earth.
This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. “You don’t see earthquakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (TexNet). “It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and has the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”
While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet hastions and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location 300 earthquake sta for these purposes.
Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
32. How does the AI forecast earthquakes
A. By identifying data from the satellites.
B. By analyzing background sounds in the Earth.
C. By modeling data based on earthquake recordings.
D. By monitoring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
33. What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 3
A. The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
B. The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
C. The significance of developing the AI prediction.
D. The limitation of AI algorithms in earthquake prediction.
34. What does the follow-up research focus on
A. Conducting tests in different locations.
B. Applying the AI approach to other fields.
C. Building more earthquake stations in Texas.
D. Enlarging the database to train the calculation accuracy.
35. Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology
A. Stable but outdated.
B. Effective but costly.
C. Potential and economical.
D. Pioneering and promising.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help crying sadly when she thought of the scolding (责骂) from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was impossible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller noticed the young girl and asked “Hey, do you want to have the noodles ”
“Oh, yes ... but I don’t have money on me ...” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of tasty noodles. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it ” asked the man kindly.
“I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled “I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her ”
Jenny sat there, speechless, she remembered mother’s familiar face. “Why did I not think of that I appreciated a bowl of noodles from a stranger, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realising that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I’ve been looking for you, she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’s arms.” Mum, I’m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me. She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled patting her back gently.

B. They are closely associated with evil or good.

D
“You don’t see earthquakes coming” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (TexNet).
