Four Truly Unique Canadian Camping Experiences
Mount Robson Provincial Park, British Columbia
Named after the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies, this park gives you breathtaking views of mountains along with lakes, waterfalls, canyons, and caves. The Berg Lake campground is located right at the northern base of the 3,954-meter peak

If you’re looking for even more entertainments, the park
also hosts music and cultural festivals each summer and has its own golf course.
Kluane National Park and Reserve, Yukon
From May to September, the Kathleen Lake campground sees visitors come from far and wide to camp, hike and fish. Mountaineering is especially popular as Kluane is home to 17 of Canada’s 20 highest peaks. Having attended a first-aid-at-work course, Brian Cracknell soon found himself
responding to two emergencies in a week.
Brian was at work in his bus company office in Weston-super-Mare on May 18 when a colleague called to say there had been an accident at a bus stop nearby. He ran to the scene with his first-aid kit and found an old lady sitting at the bus stop. When
boarding the bus, the old lady painfully hurt her left leg, which was bleeding.
He introduced himself, and asked some basic first-aid questions to get a general picture of her health. Then he put his jacket on the floor, using the lady’s coat as a pillow, and gently laid her down so he could raise her legs and apply some bandages. Brian said, “At first I was a bit worried about remembering to do all the right things. I made sure she was as comfortable as possible.” When he had nearly finished, he told
the lady that she was his first one. The lady said he was doing a great job.
Nearly a week later, Brian got a second call-out to help another lady at a bus
stop.
Having used his new skills twice within a short time, Brian has decided to sign up as a Red Cross first-aid volunteer. He said, “I just thought: What’s the point of having this knowledge if I’m not going to use it It felt really good to help those
people. I was so proud of myself afterwards, so I’m going to join the Red Cross.”

We all know that a healthy life means getting both plenty of exercise and enough good-quality sleep, but reality often gets in the way. The new research indicates that doing enough exercise could make up for some of the unhealthy impacts of bad sleep. While the health benefits of exercise and sleep are nothing new, it’s the relationship between them that is interesting in this particular study—it could even give doctors
another option to deal with patients’ sleep problems.
“We found those who both had the poorest sleep quality and exercised the least were most at risk of death from heart disease, the stroke, and cancer,” says
epidemiologist Bo-Huei Huang, from the University of Sydney in Australia.
Participants were grouped into three levels of physical activity (high, medium or low) and were also given a sleep quality score from 0—5 based on the amount of
shut-eye they got, how late they stayed up, insomnia, snoring and daytime sleepiness.
Those with the highest risk of dying from cancer or heart disease during the study period were those with the worst quality sleep and who didn’t meet the exercise guidelines recommended by WHO. That risk went down for people with poor sleep
quality but who did meet the exercise guidelines.
In the case of all forms of cancer, for example, those at the unhealthiest end of the sleep and exercise scale had a 45 percent higher risk of dying from cancer than those with good sleep scores who kept physically active. However, that risk just about disappeared for those who didn’t score well on sleep but did score well on physical
activity.
For now, it’s not clear why more exercise might make up for poor sleep, as far as our health goes. It could be that the increased activity is counteracting inflammation( 炎 症), or reducing irregularities in glucose metabolism, suggest the
researchers.
“Considering that physical activity is perhaps more modifiable than sleep, our study offers people more health incentives to be physically active,” says population
health researcher Emmanuel Stamatakis, from the University of Sydney.
8.This research is of particular interest in that .
A.it’s in this study that exercise is known to be beneficial to sleep
B.this study offers people more health treatments to be physically active
C.it could enable doctors to cure patients of their sleeping condition
D.the relationship between exercise and sleep is updated in this study
9.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage
A.Those who had the poorest sleep quality were most at risk of death from heart
disease.
B.Those scoring lowest on sleep and exercise scale were more likely to die from
cancer.
C.There’s no risk of cancer for those who didn’t sleep well but did score well on
physical activity.
D.It’s evident that in terms of health why more exercise could make up for poor sleep.
10.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 6 mean
A.Promoting. B.Increasing.
C.Preventing. D.Causing.
11.Where can this passage most probably be taken from
A.A research findings report.
B.A medical examination report.
C.A report on sleep quality.

A new study has found the amount of antibiotics(抗生素)given to farm animals is expected to increase by two-thirds over the next 15 years. Researchers are linking the growing dependence on the drugs to the increasing need for meat, milk and eggs. However, the drugs could quicken the development of antibiotic-resistant infections( 感染). Such infections are already a major public health concern in the
United States.
The World Health Organization notes that when people stop living in poverty(贫 困), the first thing they want to do is eat better, rather than earn more money. For most people, that means their diet should contain more meat. With the rapid development of Asia, people there are eating nearly four times as much meat, milk
and other milk products as they did 50 years ago.
To meet the need, farmers have put many animals into smaller spaces. As the animals are crowded together, the easiest way to deal with some of the problems of crowding is to give them antibiotics. It’s clear that antibiotics help animals stay healthy in a crowded environment and grow faster. But bacteria can develop
resistance to the drugs gradually.
Nowadays, doctors find antibiotics that once worked against the infections no longer work. The bacteria have learned ways to fight against the drugs. The heavy use of antibiotics in animals is responsible for the growth of antibiotic resistance worldwide. In the United States, at least two million people get drug-resistant
infections each year and at least 23,000 die from an infection.
Europe has banned the use of antibiotics to increase animal growth. And the United States is hoping to persuade farmers to stop using antibiotics for that purpose.
12.What accounts for the increasing amount of antibiotics given to farm animals
A.The desire for new drugs.
B.The less effective antibiotics.
C.The outdated farm technology.
D.The need for more various foods.
13.What do most people want to do first when they get rid of poverty according to
WHO
A.Make a lot of money.
B.Focus more on health.
C.Have more meat in their diet.
D.Live in a better environment.
14.What can be inferred from the passage
A.Antibiotics do harm to animals.
B.Antibiotics make animals more nutritious.
C.Antibiotics are used heavily in Europe.
D.Antibiotic-resistant infections spread to people.
15.What’s the passage mainly about
A.A new way of raising farm animals.
B.The advantages of using antibiotics.
C.The reason for banning the use of antibiotics.
D.The negative effects of the heavy use of antibiotics in farm animals.

Most people actually do not know how to do basic first aid on mild burns. It is normally taken for granted since most people think that soaking( 浸泡) the burn in
water is the way to go. 16
Once the burn appears, you will surely feel much pain on the actual burned skin. Technically, this is the time to stay calm. 17 Finding a source of running water is recommended. However, if there is none, any source will do. If there is running water, simply place the burned area under it and allow it to soak in the water for about 5 to 10 minutes. 18 If you have access to ice or a cold compress(冷敷布), you can use that as well. You can place the ice or cold compress on the affected area and leave it there for about 15 to 30 minutes. The ice will numb the pain and will also stop more
injuries to the skin.
After soaking in water or cooling the area with ice, remove from the water source and allow the moisture(水分) to dry naturally. You may also consider patting it dry with a towel or napkin;however, this could damage the burnt skin even more.
19
As soon as the area dries completely, get a bandage( 绷带) or a strip of cloth. 20 This will protect that area from infection caused by outside dirt and dust getting
into the open burn.
A.Calling a doctor may as well help in most burn cases.
B.The thing is that treating a mild burn goes more than just soaking the affected part
in water.
C.It is best to dry it naturally instead.
D.Wrap it around the burn to cover the open area of skin.
E.The truth is that soaking is the last thing to do to deal with mild burns.
F.The first thing you need to do is find a clean water source.
G.This will relieve some of the pain, cool the skin, and stop the additional burn.

第二节(满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的
短文。
I was in my 30s and my wife left me last month. I had no work and was on my way to the city center to find a job. I had no umbrellas, and I could not afford one. I sat down in the streetcar and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a
silver handle.
I examined the handle and saw a name. The usual procedure would have been to turn in the umbrella to the conductor, but somehow I decided to take it with me and find the owner myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name on the umbrella
and found it. I called and a lady answered.
Yes, she said in surprise that it was her umbrella, which her parents, now dead, had given her for a birthday present. But she added that it had been stolen more than a year before. She was so excited that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her small house. She took the umbrella, and her eyes filled with tears. We talked
for a while, and I must have given her my address. I didn’t remember.
The next six months were tough. My last job ended the day before Christmas and my thirty-dollar rent was soon due, but I had only fifteen dollars. When I walked from the streetcar to my small apartment, the air was full of the sound of Christmas merriment. But there should be no Christmas for me. Unless a wonder happened, I
would be homeless in January, foodless and jobless.
Peggy, my daughter, had proudly set our kitchen table for our evening meal and put pans out and three cans of food which would be our dinner. When I looked at those pans and cans, I felt broken-hearted. We would have only hamburgers for our Christmas dinner tomorrow. I stood in the cold little kitchen and the coldness in my
heart was colder than ice.
注意:续写词数应为 150 左右。
Paragraph 1:
The doorbell suddenly rang and Peggy ran quickly to answer it, calling that it
must be Santa Claus.
Paragraph 2:
Our dinner that night was the most delicious meal I had ever eaten.

One possible version:
Dear Jim,
Since you asked about the Red Cross First Aid Club, let me tell you something
about it.
The club was founded last year to promote health education among students. So far, it has attracted over 100 students who are interested in health-related issues. Recently, we have just received CPR training. I have gained a lot from the club. It has taught me some life-saving skills and provided me with a chance to see medical
professionals work.
What clubs are you in I am looking forward to hearing from you.

第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
The doorbell suddenly rang and Peggy ran quickly to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus. Then I heard a man talking heartily to her, so I went to the door. He was a deliver man and his arms were full of parcels. “This is a mistake,” I said, but he read the name on the parcels and they were for me. When he had gone, I could only stare at the boxes. Peggy and I sat on the floor and opened them. A huge pair of doll gloves. Candy. A beautiful leather purse. Incredible! I looked for the name of the
sender. It was the lady.
Paragraph 2:
Our dinner that night was the most delicious meal I had ever eaten. I forgot I had no money for the rent and only fifteen dollars in my purse and no job. My child and I ate and laughed together in happiness. We decorated the small Christmas tree with the gifts that we received. Then Peggy fell asleep. Looking at her, I felt some sweet peace
flooding me. I had some hope again.
