Learning Objectives
2
1
What do they have in common and what are their functions
They all contain tag questions to show that the speaker is unsure about what he or she is saying or to make sure of their opinion.
Look and discuss
You can swim, can’t you
But you like swimming, don’t you
Everything is ready, isn’t it
You have told me that you were fond of swimming, weren’t you
Adam: That sounds interesting, doesn't it

Lin Tao: Sorry, I can’t. I’ve got to meet my
adviser. By the way, our school soccer team won at last, didn’t they
Han Jing: No, they didn’t. It’s too bad.
Underline the tag questions and their answers.
What functions do the tag questions have
Amy: It's not a real sport, is it
Shen Qi: Yes, it is.
Perceive and Discuss
The tag questions are used to show that the speaker is unsure about what he is saying and would like to ask others to make sure whether what he or she thinks is right.
A tag question is a special construction in English.
It is a statement followed by a min-question.
We use tag questions to ask for confirmation.
They mean something like: “Is that right ” or “ Do you agree ”
They are very common in English.
Explain and Analyze
Definition
auxiliary verb + subject
We use the same auxiliary verb in the tag as in the main sentence. If there is no auxiliary verb in the main sentence, we use do in the tag. You live in Spain,
don’t you
If the auxiliary verb in the sentence is affirmative, the tag is negative. You’re Spanish,
aren’t you
If the auxiliary verb in the sentence is negative, the tag is affirmative. You’re not Spanish,
are you
Explain and Analyze
Form

Check whether something is true.

· You won't go without me, will you
Explain and Analyze
Meaning
That film was fantastic, wasn’t it ↘
If we don’t know the answer, it is a real question and we use a rising intonation with the tag question.
If we know the answer and are just confirming the information, a falling intonation is used with the tag question.
Explain and Analyze
Intonation
You don’t know where the boss is, do you ↗
I’m sitting next to you, aren’t I
