Have you ever had such an experience When chatting on WeChat, you sent someone a voice message where you thought your voice was clear and moving, but when you heard your own recorded voice, you couldn’t help wondering: Is this really my voice Why is it so ugly
It’s not your fault. The discomfort we have over hearing our voices in audio recordings is probably due to a mix of physiology(生理学)and psychology.
For one, the sound from an audio recording is transmitted differently to your brain compared with the sound made when you speak. When listening to a recording of your voice, the sound travels through the air and into your ears—what’s referred to as “air conduction”. However, while some of the sound is transmitted through air conduction, much of the sound is internally conducted directly through your head when you speak. Thus, people generally learn their voice as deeper and richer. The recorded voice, in comparison, can sound thinner and higher, which many find annoying.
Another reason why hearing a recording of your voice can be so discomforting is that it really is a new voice—one that exposes a difference between your self-perception and reality. Dr. Silke Paulmann, a psychologist at the University of Essex, says, “we sound more high-pitched than what we think we should, which makes us uneasy as it doesn’t meet our internal expectations; our voice plays a massive role in forming our identity and I guess no one likes to realize that you’re not really who you think you are.”
So if the voice in your head criticizes the voice coming out of a recording device, it’s probably your inner critic overreacting—and you’re judging yourself a bit too harshly.
24.What does the author think of the fact that people dislike their recorded voices
A.Confusing. B.Instructive. C.Reasonable. D.Ridiculous.
25.What does the underlined word “transmitted” mean in paragraph 3
A.admitted B.declared C.guided D.passed
26.What would the author agree about the recorded voice
A.People don’t have to care about its difference.
B.Scientists can make it meet our expectations.
C.It travels in the air faster than our own sound.
D.It narrows the gap between self-expectation and reality.
27.What problem does the author focus on in the text
A.How do people chat politely on WeChat B.What do the recorded messages contain
C.Why do you hate your own recorded voice D.How do people change their recorded voice

Maijlis Jonsson is a 73-year-old living in the centre of Sweden’s capital Stockholm. She leads an active life with her friends, travelling around the city and meeting in coffee shops. However, one issue causes her stress.
Sweden has been steadily moving towards a completely cashless society for a number of years. Cash is now used in less than one in five of all cash transactions(交易)in stores—half the number as five years ago. The law says shops can refuse to accept cash. Life can be hard for those unwilling or unable to adapt to the changes. Not everyone hates cash. Majlis Jonsson is one such person. She must go to a bank in order to pay her friend back for a train ticket bought digitally. “I just don’t know how to do it.”
Niklas Arvidsson, Sweden’s leading expert on the payment system, acknowledges that some people are in danger of being left behind, like the elderly. “We’ve also got a problem with smaller businessmen in rural areas where perhaps the telecommunication systems are not working,” he says.
Is Sweden benefiting from all this According to Arvidsson, it is. “Electronic transactions are quicker and cost less in general and make the payment system more efficient.” He also points out that “it is a little bit more difficult in general for the people to get away with not paying taxes or making small thefts without cash.”
Of course, with an increase in digital transactions, the question of data security comes into play. As we freefall through an increasingly virtual world—and payments over the cloud instead of payments with paper—who has access to our information It is a global problem with no easy solution.
But Arvidsson remains largely positive about cashless transactions. “It’s like a virtual infrastructure is being built... if a highway or a railroad has the capacity to bring people in business closer and increase output, the same thing will happen with technology. I really do believe that once the technology genie(妖怪)is out of the bottle, how do you put it back ”
28.What upsets Majlis Josson
A.She owes her friend some money. B.She has to pay without cash.
C.She has to draw money from the bank. D.She knows little about the mobile phone.
29.What’s mentioned by Arvidsson as an advantage of digital transactions
A.They make paying taxes convenient. B.They help reduce some illegal acts.
C.They improve telecommunication systems. D.They save the cost of printing paper money.
30.According to the text, what problem will digital transactions bring about
A.They will charge extra fees. B.They will stimulate overspend.
C.They will destroy the computer system. D.They will pose a threat to data security.
31.How does Aridsson show the importance of technology
A.By using study results. B.By providing examples.
C.By quoting a famous saying. D.By making a comparison.
D
We’ve had waves of panic around technology for decades, whether it is comic books or video games. Now it happens to be social media. And the fact of the matter is that parents and teachers, who are trying to raise their kids in the face of these panics, are being poorly served by the government when it comes to getting meaningful advice.
It’s not that social media is good or bad for people. It’s that the science of social media and mental health is broken. We need to do research, but we shouldn’t be approaching it from the perspective that the world is ending. We need to be curious and open to the possibility of its effects, positive and negative.
The danger for policymakers or parents is that if you pretend that social media is a problem, without having evidence, and you take steps to regulate it, the intervention could end up being really bad for young people. You might be taking away a lifeline for vulnerable(脆弱的)kids or free them of their human right to play, which is morally wrong at the best of times, let alone during a pandemic.
So that’s why I’m not going to tell you that I know social media is bad. It’s perfectly reasonable for parents and teachers to be concerned about social media, but it’s unavoidable and young people are going to encounter it sooner or later. So what would you rather do: keep them in the dark and leave them ill-equipped to deal with it or let them learn about social media with your help and support It’s a little like learning to ride a bike. Bikes can be huge fun to ride, but you can also hurt yourself on them, which is why you don’t just give your kid a bike and a helmet and wish them good luck. You help them learn to ride. Similarly, you’re not asking your 14-year-old daughter to choose between telling you someone scary is messaging her or losing her phone. You need to treat it like anything else that can hurt you, but can also connect you.
32.What does this wave of panic refer to now according to the passage
A.Social media B.Technology C.Comic books D.Video games
33.What should we do to help our children
A.Go to the special treatment center B.Give them some instructions
C.Ask the experts for help D.Free them of their human right to play
34.What is the author’s attitude towards the social media
A.Indifferent B.Supportive C.Neutral D.Disapproving
35.Which of the following statements does the author agree with
A.Parents should let children learn about social media on their own.
B.Parents should be cautious when regulating children’s using social media.
C.Parents are advised not to give kids helmets when they learn to ride a bike.
D.The world is ending as a result of the negative effects of social media.

One Dollar a Night in New York
When it comes to finding a place to stay for a night in New York, things don’t always come cheap. However, artist Miao Jiaxin, a Shanghai native who moved to New York in 2006, is offering people the chance to stay in his apartment in Brooklyn. 36
Guests can easily book Miao’s room on the Internet. Nevertheless, although they will be housed in his apartment, it appears to have more in common with a jail cell than a regular bedroom as a cage in the center of the room is where guests will stay.
37 Guests must stay in the cage for three hours each morning. “From 9 a. m. to 12p. m., you can’t access the Internet, and there are no electronic devices, books, radio, pens or craftwork. You can’t talk to anybody. You can’t do Yoga or any other exercises. And you can’t even sleep,” writes Miao.“ 38 ”
Meanwhile, the cage is monitored and recorded by two cameras and the activity of guest s is filmed for the whole time they stay in the cell.
39 They can enjoy great views of New York on the roof deck outside the room.
The room is inspired by the alienation(疏离感)Miao felt as a new immigrant —feelings he believes are universal. “It’s not for fun. It’s for an experience. 40 ” said Miao.
A.It’s too expensive for common people to afford.
B.It’s only one dollar a night.

In our weekly staff meeting, our editor Ashley was not pleased with the quality of our reporting. “Our readership is way down. We need better stories for this Thursday’s school newspaper. Does anybody have any ideas ” she said.
I handed her my article about our basketball team beating Deerfield High School the previous night by one point. “Sports stories are fun,” she said, “but not good enough for the front page. We need something to really get people’s attention.”
After our meeting, we left the newsroom together and heard someone screaming, “Perry is missing!” Perry was a big red parrot and had been our school mascot(吉祥物)for ten years. He played an important role in students’ lives, both in and out of class. He had also been a constant presence at school events, inspiring a sense of unity among students.
Everyone gathered around Perry’s empty cage, heartbroken. Suddenly, a student from the crowd came over and showed me a photo. “You’re a reporter for the school paper, right I happened to take this yesterday,” he said. In the photo was a Deerfield High School basketball player with something large hidden under his shirt around the size of a parrot.
“He must have stolen Perry to get back at us for winning the game!” Ashley cried. We hurried back to the newsroom, agreeing to run the photo on the front page with the headline “Deerfeld Stole Perry.” “This is just the story we need. Everyone will read it,” Ashley said confidently.
After she left, I took a closer look at the photo. The clock in the background read 4:15pm, but our game against Deerfield hadn’t started until 4:30 pm. Why would the boy have taken Perry before we even played An uneasy feeling came over me that we might have falsely accused someone.
I went to Perry’s usual caretaker to ask if he knew Perry was missing. “He’s not missing. He’s retired. He’s ready for some quieter days,” he said. Learning the truth, I immediately told Ashley and suggested writing a story to say goodbye to Perry.
