The U. S. is in the midst of a “loneliness epidemic”. For a lot of people, the feeling is even more noticeable during the holidays. In addition to the emotional impact of chronic loneliness, it has some dramatic health consequences: increased risk of heart disease and stroke, infections, cancer, even death.
People may feel lonely when their social needs are not met by the people around them. Laetitia Mwilambwe-Tshilobo, a social cognitive neuroscientist at Princeton University, says loneliness epidemic captures two distinct groups: first, people with a low number of social connections; second, people who feel they have poor quality existing relationships.
Elisa Baek, a social neuroscientist at the University of Southern California, co-authored a study that looked at whether lonely people view the world differently than non-lonely people, specifically among college freshmen. Baek found that while non-lonely people were all similar in their neural responses, lonely people had responses that were really different — not just from the non-lonely group, but also from each other. Baek says that these idiosyncrasies (特性) in how lonely participants process the world, “may pose challenges in how these people are able to achieve social connection and feel connected with others.”
To study these changes to the brain, Baek’s team collected fMRI data — a measure of blood flow changes in the brain — while first-year college students watched short videos to measure how similarly participants’ brains responded to the videos. The videos ranged from dramatic and comedic clips to instructional demonstrations in order to reproduce experiences participants might have in daily life. She says it’s the closest they could get to study people’s brain activity — and how they process the world — while they were going about their lives.
Mwilambwe-Tshilobo, who is not involved in the study, says the research accurately highlights how individual differences affect people in experiencing loneliness. “Trying to connect more deeply with one or two or three other people may be more important than to try to get to know everybody and being on good terms with everybody. It doesn’t have to be someone who is like-minded. It’s more like: How can we get on the same page with people who we might not start off on the same page with, but that might form deeper connections afterwards ” she adds.
4. Which description best characterizes the “loneliness epidemic”
A. Harmful mentally and physically. B. Exclusive to people with few friends.
C. Striking throughout the year. D. Spreading between people.
5. What can be inferred from the study conducted by Elisa Baek
A. Its findings focus on the differences between lonely and non-lonely people.
B. It targets freshman students at the University of Southern California.
C. It casts light on how lonely people perceive the world.
D. It challenges lonely people to be more social.
6. What is required of the videos for the study
A. To monitor the response speed. B. To model everyday situations.
C. To study the recreational activities. D. To look into the brain structures.
7. What advice might Mwilambwe-Tshilobo give to lonely people
A. Expand the social network. B. Befriend with those in high places.
C. Seek out friends who think alike. D. Deepen connections with patience.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. D

The 24 solar terms (节气) originated and was firstly used in China. It was created thousands of years ago on the basis of practical needs of agriculture. After returning from his job as a cultural relics protection worker 10 years ago, Wang Yongxian kept his love for ancient Chinese architecture (建筑) through teaching.
Now aged 73, he still teaches a course named “Conservation and Restoration of Ancient Chinese Buildings” at a University in Shanxi province. His main interest is Dougong, a construction method that uses interlocking (紧密连接的) wooden pieces to form structures. The method is one of the most important features of ancient Chinese architecture.

There are some people, who remind us that age is just a number. Johanna Quaas is a 97-year-old German woman who was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest active competitive gymnast in 2012. Over the years, Quaas has made waves online after videos of her routines are posted from time to time.
The latest of those is a short video shared by Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis with the message “You are my spirit warrior (战士)!! Wow!! GOALS!!!” The video was shot at the German Gymnastics Festival in 2017, when the gymnast was 91.
Although the video shared by Davis has earned over 400,000 likes, this is far from being her most widely-spreading performance. Quaas first won the hearts of the world after user Lieve Daffy shared two videos of the gymnast’s floor and parallel bars (双杠) routines at Tournament of Masters in 2012, within six days of posting, they had gained over 1.1 million views each. Now, both short videos have over 3.5 million views. Her abilities have also impressed the greatest athletes in her field, such as Simone Biles, who said her parallel bars routine left her speechless.
Born in 1925, Quaas began her gymnastics training at an early age and entered her first competition when she was 10. While she spent most of her life as a gymnastics coach and handball player, she returned to active gymnastics at the age of 56. In 2015, she received the Nadia Comaneci Sportsmanship Award from the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame, before retiring from competition due to an injury in her arm in 2018.
However, that hasn’t stopped Quaas from sharing her amazing moves on Instagram, especially how she still has the ability to stand on her head. If that isn’t enough, she also stretches and plays soccer. However, the most heartwarming part of it all is the warm messages she gets from people around the world. “You’re such an example, Ms. Johanna!” writes one user, while another says, “Wishing the Best of Health to an AMAZING woman, who is my biggest inspiration! Much love.”
20. What can we learn about Johanna Quaas
A. She is 91 years old.
B. She won the Oscar Prize for playing the role of warrior.
C. She shared videos of surfing online.
D. She won popularity online.
21. What does the author want to show by offering numbers in paragraph 3

In today’s world of fast-paced games and short videos, people are spending less and less time on things. For example, research has shown that the average visitor spends just 15 seconds on a website before moving on to other things. But the Internet is a huge and busy place, with millions of sites to choose from. You might expect people to slow down a bit more when they’re in museums full of great works of art. But you’d be wrong.
Several studies have shown that the amount of time for people to spend looking at a piece of art is ten seconds. Many people may spend more time, but not much more — the average is about 28 seconds. At the Tate Modern Museum in London, it’s even worse. People there spend an average of just eight seconds on each artwork. And in that short period of time, the visitors are also managing to do another important thing — take selfies!
In recent years museums have been working to change this behavior. Today, over 170 museums around the world are celebrating “Slow Art Day”. They are asking their visitors to spend at least 5-10 minutes looking at just one work of art. More and more people are using crowd-funding to pay for their projects and create new products. Crowdfunding is when a per-son or business gets many small payments from a large number of people. Usually, the way to do this is to use the Internet. In-stead of trying to get a few people to give thousands of dollars, you get hundreds of people, maybe thousands, to give a few dollars. But this is still not easy. You want people to see the value of your idea. How will you get them to give the dollars they earn to you
*Successful projects are those that got the money they wanted.
There are websites that make this opportunity possible. Kickstarter and GoGet-Funding are popular. You create a short video to explain your project. The most important part is getting your message across. Just because you’ve made your idea known doesn’t mean you will get the money you need. You still need to sell your idea. Many people begin by explaining what the product is and then telling why people need it. For example, one of the most popular crowdfunded products is a watch. The Pebble watch connects with in-formation on a smartphone that will send information to the watch. More than 65,000 people gave money for this product.Crowdfunding raised $10.3 million for it.However, it’s not just products that people use crowdfunding for. People use it for their music, film, art, or writing projects.
Projects usually get from 25 to 40 per-cent of their money from crowdfunding sites. Who is giving all the money When people need money, they often ask their friends and family. Crowdfunding often works the same way, but once you create your video and message, your friends share it with their friends. If you’ve created a message that people can connect to, you get many more people to give. Why do these people give First, there is the “feel-good” factor. Giving money makes people feel good. Second, many small businesses offer rewards to people. Third, sometimes the reward is simply getting to use the product. And this is part of the success of crowdfunding. You could make a difference.

The U. S. is in the midst of a “loneliness epidemic”.

Slow Art supporters believe that when visitors spend more time looking at and studying the work of art, they admire it more. Studying a work of art for more time can also help people get a better understanding of the artist’s ideas and what the artist went through to create the work.
Most of the museums taking part in Slow Art Day are choosing just a few works for their visitors to see. Some of the museums are offering chances for visitors to talk about the artworks and share their ideas.

35. Where do people usually get crowdfunding
