Mary O’Connor and her husband Bobby Hughes had been in Letterkenny for a
couple of days, when they decided they would spend an afternoon at Rathmullan
Beach.
Bobby is a diabetic(糖尿病患者)and needs to take insulin(胰岛素) regularly. On that morning, he had checked his blood sugar levels, which were fine. He ate breakfast without any difficulty. However, an unlucky incident happened. Mary said, “Ten minutes after we were there he just completely collapsed. It was just scary and it was so sudden and urgent. I think the really severe heat was a key factor, but it
reflected how quickly things could change.”
A few moments later, two women from Derry noticed that and rapidly came over. One called Sara who was also a similar patient recognized without delay what was going on. She said, “I had a bottle of glucose gel( 葡萄糖凝胶)that I kept for
emergencies and I was rubbing it onto Bobby’s gums.”
Mary said, “Some young lifeguards were able to call an ambulance and another lady called Emma, who was a nurse, stopped to help us as well. Eventually we got him into the ambulance and I started to shake from the shock of it all. A nice man, Liam McAteer, whose mum owns the pub in Rathmullan, offered to drive me to the hospital and even took me back again to get my car.” Mary said that the paramedics at the Letterkenny hospital were so brilliant in treating Bobby that he was able to be
discharged later that day at 6:30 p.m.

First aid means what it says: the aid, or help that can be given to an injured person first and which is before any other help. Usually, the first thing we should do if a serious accident happens is to telephone for an ambulance, but sometimes quick and
practical actions by us may save someone’s life.
Shock:People often suffer from shock after receiving an injury. The face turns grey and the skin becomes damp and cold. They breathe quickly. They should be kept
warm. Cover them with a blanket and give them a warm drink.
Broken Bones: Don’t move the person. Send for an ambulance at once.
Poison: A person who has swallowed the poison should be taken to hospital at once. With some poisons, sleeping pills, for example, it is a good thing to make the person sick by pushing your fingers down his throat. But if he has swallowed some kind of acid, or anything that burns, it would be a bad thing to make the person sick by pushing your fingers down his throat. The poison would burn his throat as it comes up. It is, therefore, best to find out what the person has taken so that you can call to
tell the doctor.
Suffocation: This means not being able to breathe. For example, a drowning person will have his lungs full of water. Lay him down with his head lower than the rest of his body so that the water will drain out. If a person has something stuck in his throat, try to remove it with your fingers, or by hitting him on the back. When a person has stopped breathing because of drowning, electric shocks, breathing in a
poisonous gas, etc. you can help him to begin breathing again.
Remember: When an accident happens, send someone to telephone for an
ambulance at once. Keep the injured person warm and quiet. Give him plenty of air.
Do not let other people crowd around him. If you see an injured person who is being
looked after, keep away.
5.When someone is seriously injured, what should we do first
A.Keep him warm with a blanket.
B.Send for an ambulance at once.
C.Make him sick by pushing your fingers down his throat.
D.Lay him down with his head lower.
6.What do the underlined words “drain out” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Leave out.
B.Squeeze out.
C.Flow away.
D.Let out.
7.What is the passage mainly about
A.The importance of first aid.
B.The symptoms of shock.
C.The types of injuries.
D.How to offer first aid.
8.Where would this article probably appear
A.In a safety booklet.
B.In an advertisement.
C.In a newspaper.
D.In a popular magazine.
Every child should know some basic first aid techniques. This is true whether
your child is four or fourteen. 1 .
Calling for help
Once your child reaches the age of four, he should know all about calling 911 in the event of an emergency. 2 . For example, he should call 911 if an adult asks him to, if an adult passes out and cannot be woken, if there is a fire and he can’t find
an adult, or if people are hurt.
As I am typing this, I just realized that although my kids are taught about 911,
the telephones in the house are out of reach for all but my oldest child (to prevent the
other two from playing with the phone). Don’t make this mistake yourself. You do
hope your children can get in touch with the police in time.
3
Teach children about basic care for cuts and scrapes. In my house, the kids all know that cuts must be cleaned and know where the bandages are. 4 . Asking an adult for help is necessary. Also they should know a bit about self-care. Believe it or not, I had to help a teenage neighbor once who had no idea what to do when he cut his
hand on broken glass. He just ran around in a circle.
Burns
Tell your child that if he ever gets a burn, he should immediately call for help. Meanwhile, he should run the cool but not cold water for the burn. Getting the burn
cooled down quickly can reduce the damage to the skin. 5 .
A.Cuts and scrapes
B.Tell them what 911 is about
C.Set an example to your children
D.Explain all about what a real emergency is
E.You should teach your children something useful
F.This is important if no adult is with your child when a burn occurs
G.They also know how to put pressure on a cut to make it stop bleeding

1.victims 2.technique 3.loose 4.electric 5.radiation
Ⅱ.1.at ease 2.sticking to 3.sense of touch
4.depending on

be urgently
Ⅳ.1.if necessary 2.to ease his pain 3.there is an urgent need 4.a minor mistake

a variety of 意为“各种各样的” 。

根据第一段中的 “spend an afternoon at Rathmullan Beach”和最
根据第二段中的“the really severe heat was a key factor”可知,酷
故选 A。
1.regularly adv.
3.emergency n.
5.brilliant adj.
从句中又含有 so...that...
根据第一段第二句 中 的 “the first thing we should do...is to telephone for an ambulance”可知,若一个人受伤严重,首先应立即打电话叫救护车。

故选 A。

sick v.
第一个 分句中,we should do 是一个省略关系词的定语从句,修饰先行词 the first thing,从
Calling for help”“Burns”
3.A 主旨句。 该段的第一句“Teach children about basic care for cuts and scrapes.”
故选 A。
“They”和上文中的“the kids”对应。
1.emergency n. 3.get in touch with...
与……取得联系 4.set an example to...
1.but prep.
1.pass out 昏迷;失去知觉 2.bandage n.
