Born in a musical family in 1925 in New Orleans, Renald Richard spent his childhood filled with music. At the age of 13, he went to see a band perform at a church where he fell in love with the trumpet. So he started lessons on it, and later played it in the high school band. After high school, he was sent into military service and played his trumpet in the United States Navy Band. After ending up studying music at Xavier University of Louisiana, he played the trumpet on the famous Bourbon Street and also toured with many bands.
In 1954, Richard was approached by Jeff Brown, the manager of musician Ray Charles. He invited Richard to join Ray Charles' new band. “To be selected by Ray Charles was an honor to me. Ray Charles was exacting,” said Richard. “He was a perfectionist and was rather demanding about his music.”
Renald Richard toured all over the South and West with Ray Charles. Sitting in the back seat of the car on the way to a concert, Richard wrote the song “I Got a Woman” for Charles, which became Ray Charles' first radio hit. In 1954, Renald Richard left Ray Charles' band. However, he stayed friendly with Ray Charles over the years. He became the high school's band director in his hometown until 1962. Four years later, he moved again to New York City. Over the years, Richard has written many other songs that have been recorded by artists including Joe Turner, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley, to name a few. Living now in Southern Florida, Richard is still active at the age of 92. As you can see, Renald Richard's musical days are by no means near an end.

Little brain stimulation at night appears to help people remember what they learned the previous day, a study of 18 severe epilepsy(癫痫) patients has found.
During sleep, brain cells fire in rhythmic patterns. When two brain areas synchronize(同步) their firing patterns, they are able to communicate. During non-rapid eye movement sleep, the hippocampus(海马结构), found deep in the brain, synchronizes its activity with the prefrontal cortex, which lies just behind the forehead. This helps transform memories from the day into memories that can last a lifetime.
Dr. Itzhak Fried at the University of California and his team gathered 18 epilepsy patients who already had electrodes(电极) in their brains for medical evaluation. This offered the scientists a way to both monitor and change a person's brain rhythms. They used a “celebrity pet” test in which participants were shown images matching a particular celebrity with a specific animal. They were expected to remember which animal went with which celebrity.
Patients saw the images before going to bed. In order to assess how the patients' memory during sleep was enhanced, the researchers gave some of them tiny electrical stimulation through the wires in their brains while they were sleeping. In patients who got the stimulation, rhythms in the two brain areas became more synchronized. And when they woke up, they scored higher in the test.
The experiment was based on decades of research done by scientists, including Dr. Gy rgy Buzsáki, a neuroscientist at New York University. But changing rhythms in healthy peoples' brains might not improve their memory, he says, because those communication channels are already in superb condition. The epilepsy patients may have improved because they started out with sleep and memory problems caused by both the disorder and the drugs used to treat it.
Even so, he says, the approach has the potential to help millions of people with damaged memory. And changing brain rhythms probably plays an important part in many other problems. “It is not specific to memory. It is doing a lot of other things,” Buzsáki says, “like regulating moods and emotion.”
28.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The basis behind the research.
B.The forming process of memories.
C.The analysis of a patient's sleeping patterns.
D.The advantages of studies in brain activities.
29.Why was electrical stimulation delivered to some patients at night
A.To observe non-rapid eye movement sleep.
B.To compare their medical examination results.
C.To monitor how their brain areas synchronized.
D.To see if there was improvement in their memory.
30.What can be expected of the approach used in the research
A.It may help people with memory problems.
B.It can help reduce epilepsy patients' drug use.
C.It will strengthen healthy people's memory.
D.It may enhance people's communication skills.
31.According to the passage, what's Buzsáki's attitude toward Fried's approach
A.Disapproving. B.Favorable.
C.Negative. D.Unconcerned.
D
A large amount of evidence suggests that children whose parents are involved in their academic achievements are more likely to be higher-achieving students than those whose parents are not involved in their academic lives. Parental involvement in children's school achievements can also decrease the likelihood that these children will use drugs, be suspended from school or engage in violent behavior.
Parental involvement in the academic achievements of their children increases achievement levels. Parents' expectations of their children's academic achievements, a structured household, and a shared respect and appreciation for learning all contribute to positive achievement outcomes in children. Additionally, it is more costly for schools to provide resources to increase students' academic achievements than it is for parents to be more involved at home.
Parents' involvement in children's academic achievements conveys the message that those accomplishments matter, which positively affects a child's sense of self-worth. Parents' self-respect is also increased as they become more involved in the academic achievements of their children.
Primary school students whose parents are actively involved in their educational lives have fewer behavioral issues in school. Parental involvement increases students' enjoyment in academic activities, too, which can contribute to better behavioral outcomes. Students might also tend to behave better if they know their parents will visit the school if they have any behavioral issues.
Children whose parents are involved in their academic achievements will have better health as adults, will be more likely to receive post-secondary education and will likely be better parents than others whose parents are not involved in their academic achievements. Parents who are involved in children's academic achievements model this behavior for their children, which teaches them to value education, and ultimately influences these children to do this behavior as parents.
32.What can we infer about parental involvement from Paragraph 2
A.It's a replacement for school activities.
B.It promotes the home-school relationship.
C.It increases parents' expectations of their children.
D.It's a cheaper way to improve students' performance.
33.What do children think of parental involvement in their study
A.It means parents are making an unnecessary move.
B.It can force them to make efforts.
C.It may confuse the responsibilities of teachers and parents.
D.It shows that the family attach great importance to their study.
34.Which of the following is the best description of parental involvement
A.A lifelong effect on children.
B.Alternative care from the old.
C.A teaching method of public schools.
D.A family tradition passed down through generations.
35.Who might be the target readers of this text
A.Teachers. B.Students.
C.Parents. D.Sociologists.

Kids need to move in school
Many years ago, when my girls were in primary school, they were crazy about the dance breaks they would occasionally have during the school day. Their teachers would put on a video, which encouraged the kids to get up and dance, and then they'd get back to work. My kids' teachers are certainly not alone. 36
The recent research, published in the journal Pediatrics, involved more than 10,000 children between the ages of 4 and 13. 37 Susan Kamin, the leader of the research, said, “Activity breaks during the school day also lead to fewer behavioral issues, not to mention cutting down on stress and anxiety.”
Breakthrough Magnet School, Connecticut, is in its third year working with the National Association of Physical Literacy. Principal Julie Goldstein said her third and fourth graders who are actively engaged in the physical program are the highest-scoring students in math and reading in the district. 38 For this school year, not one student from this group has been referred to her office for a conversation. Before the program, she might have had one or two office conversations with some of them every month.
39 “I know lots of teachers who say, ‘Yeah, I wish I had more time to do this’,” Kamin said. “Even in schools that can find the time, there is still some opposition because it's a departure from the way things used to be. 40 They're not sure whether to make that leap. Yet the schools that have made the change see tremendous results. So how do you move the needle ”
A.It's a big change for some of the teachers.
B.The challenge, though, is persuading more schools to take action.
C.Many teachers are including some forms of movement in the school day.
D.Teach children the basics of movement so that they can stay active for life.
E.Beyond the academical benefits, there are benefits outside the classroom.
F.It shows that kids who get extra physical activity in school do better in cognitive performance.
G.Anything that keeps education on the front burner is good.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was an extremely shy third grader and didn't make friends easily. My teacher, Mr. Doocy, called my mother and explained that I hadn't spoken a single word in class, and we were more than halfway through the school year. Even as a third grader, I knew this was unusual. I watched admiringly the free interaction(互动) of my classmates.
Mom tried to excuse my behavior as something that I would outgrow. But Mr. Doocy would not agree. He asked Mom if I had something at home that I liked. He said he would arrange show-and-tell for the class if I brought it to school.
Playing right into Mr. Doocy's hands, Mom told him about my cat who'd had a litter of kittens about three weeks earlier. I was crazy about those kittens.
Bingo! Mr. Doocy suggested that I bring the kittens to school the next day. I supposed Mom was hoping to dissuade him when she explained that I would have to bring the mother cat along with the six kittens because they were too young to be separated from their mother. She probably thought this would put an end to the plan. But Mr. Doocy said that it was fine.
I normally walked to school, but my mother drove me the next morning along with a big brown cardboard box. I staggered toward the classroom under the heavy load.
In no time, the chorus of kittens drew curious classmates to the mysterious box. Their eyes lit up in wonder when they caught sight of my tiny treasures. My little heart thumped (怦怦跳) against my chest as I felt myself swell with pride. I had never felt so important in my entire nine years of life!
Mr. Doocy instructed me to sit on the steps outside the classroom so everyone could get a good look inside the container. Soon, the school bell rang, but no one moved—not even Mr. Doocy. He allowed us to sit there until each student had a turn touching the kittens.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
“Can I hold one for a minute ” a little girl squealed with excitement.

Then,Mr. Doocy accompanied me to the front of the classroom and waited for the students to sit down.

第四部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
One day, a hungry tiger came out in search of food. He happened to catch a fox. But the fox said he had just been appointed by God to be head of all animals.
“Who are you trying to fool ” said the tiger.
“Why not walk behind me and see how frightened the other animals will be when they see me ” said the fox.
The tiger agreed. So he went along with the fox to find out whether it was true. All the animals really ran away the moment they saw the fox followed by the tiger indeed. How stupid the tiger was! He didn't even realize that it was him that all the other animals were really afraid of.
第二节
One possible version:
“Can I hold one for a minute ”a little girl squealed with excitement. Then all the other children gathered, begging to hold one of the kittens. “Yes,” I said, “but only for a minute. It will make them sick if they're passed around too much. And the momma cat won't be happy when she realizes her babies are missing.” Every single one of them held the kittens gently, flashing a bright smile. My heart was overflowing with joy. The only things in my mind were my little friends.
Then, Mr. Doocy accompanied me to the front of the classroom and waited for the students to sit down. When everyone was silent, he glanced my way, nodding his approval, and I began to tell the students about the six tiny kittens and their mother. It never occurred to me that they were all staring at me or I was talking in front of the class. My heart swelled with pride and confidence that I could not have imagined before my sweet cats rescued me. For the rest of the day and the days that followed, I proudly sat among my classmates with a sense of worth and importance.
