Let's look at some vocabulary and pronunciation differences in different regions of the US.
Vocabulary
One of the main features of different regional varieties of American English is vocabulary. Different words can be used for the same idea or concept, depending on the region of the US.
Sugary, carbonated drinks have different names depending on where you are from.
In the Midwest, the western part of the state of Pennsylvania, and parts of the Appalachian Mountains, especially in the state of West Virginia, people call the drinks “pop”.
In parts of the Northeast and the West Coast, they are called “soda”. In addition, people in some southern states use one name for all those kinds of sugary, carbonated drinks. They call it “Coke”, which is short for Coca Cola.
Pronunciation
In the US, people say some of the same words in different ways, depending on where they grew up.
One pronunciation variation is a difference in how many syllables(音节) make up the word “caramel”. Syllables are the parts a word is naturally divided into when pronounced.
“Caramel” (two syllables) or “caramel” (three syllables) is a light brown candy made from butter, sugar, and milk. In much of the Northeast and parts of the South, this word is pronounced with three syllables, / k r m l/. In parts of the Appalachian Mountains and much of the Midwest, many Americans pronounce this word with two syllables, / kɑ m l/.
These two pronunciations can have different meanings depending on the speaker or region. Caramel (two syllables) may mean a mixture of just sugar and water that turns brown when boiled. Caramel (three syllables) may mean the light brown candy.
Today we look at some differences in vocabulary and pronunciation in regions of the US. If you like learning about these variations in American English, please write to us in the comments. We would love to share more about this subject!

My family and I never talked about school as a ticket to the future. I was in the classroom, but I wasn't there to learn to write, read or even speak. When it was my turn to read, I wanted to hide. I was only 13 years old, but I had already hated being who I was.
I had an English teacher, Mr. Creech, who knew I couldn't read. In one of my first lessons the teacher said that anyone who had a reading age below six had to stand up. I felt so embarrassed, but at the same time, it made me realize that I needed to change the situation. I was determined not to let it happen again. Later that day, Mr. Creech encouraged me and promised he would try his best to help me learn to read. From then on, I never gave up practicing reading.
Now I am 41 years old. One day, I planned to fly back to Texas to visit my friends and family. On my way home from the airport, I saw Mr. Creech buying himself a drink. I rushed over and reached into my pocket to pay for him. “Do I know you ” he asked. “Yes, sir, you do know me,” I answered excitedly. “My name is Anthony Hamilton. You taught me English.” The look on his face told me that he remembered the boy he'd once encouraged.
“I'm so glad I have a chance to see you,” I said. “And Mr. Creech, I have great news to share.” I told him I had learned to read. But that wasn't all. I had become a published author and an active speaker. “Next time you get another Anthony Hamilton in your classroom, please encourage him to read as well,” I added.
The experts say what once worried me has a name: dyslexia(诵读困难症). But I can tell you it was a lack of desire for education.

27.What can we infer from the passage
A.Mr. Creech taught two students called Anthony Hamilton.

Texting walkers aren't just an annoyance to other walkers. Australian researchers armed with movie special-effects technology have determined scientifically that they're threats to themselves. Using motion-capture technology similar to that used for films, researchers concluded that texting while walking affects not only balance but also the ability to walk in a straight line.
“Some people like checking emails while walking to work in the morning,” said the study's co-author Hoorn,“but they may not know it has a serious effect on the safety of themselves.” Other facts have also proved this. A tourist walked along a pier near Melbourne last month while texting, bringing a sudden and icy end to a penguin-watching visit. Another person who was too wrapped up in his phone to notice dangers walked straight into the fountain in front of a shopping mall.
The Australian study involved 27 volunteers, a third of whom admitted having knocked into objects while texting. They were asked to walk 8.5 meters three times—once without phones, once while reading a text and once while writing a text, when eight cameras recorded their actions.
They found the volunteers using the phone walked slower, and, more seriously, they locked their arms and elbows in like “robots”, which forced their heads to move more, throwing themselves off balance. “In a pedestrian environment, inability to maintain a straight path would be likely to increase potential for traffic accidents,”said Mr Hoorn. “The best thing to do is step aside and stop, or keep off the phone.”
Authorities worldwide have taken note. Signs on Hong Kong's subway system advise passengers in three languages to keep their eyes off their phones. Police and transport authorities have highlighted the danger in Singapore, where The Straits Times newspaper recently declared cell phone-distracted road crossing as “the No. 2 bad habit” contributing to the rising number of road deaths. Some US states, including New York and Arkansas, are considering bans on what they're calling phone jaywalking.
28.Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “wrapped up” in Paragraph 2
A.Annoyed. B.Absorbed.
C.Confused. D.Absent-minded.
29.What can we learn from the Australian study
A.Ten volunteers admitted having knocked into objects while texting.
B.The volunteers using phones while walking moved normally.
C.The volunteers were divided into three groups during the study.
D.Texting walkers are exposed to greater possibility of traffic accidents.
30.What's the official attitude to people texting while walking in most countries
A.Neutral. B.Negative.
C.Unclear. D.Supportive.
31.What's the main idea of the passage
A.Various walkers will get different social evaluations.
B.Communication devices greatly improve people's lives.
C.Texting regardless of time and occasions brings huge risks.
D.Texting has become the preferred communication method.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Chris looked at the clock again. Only five more minutes before school let out.
Just now, his Creative Learning teacher, Mrs. Griswell asked them to be prepared for sharing their favorite hobby with the class on Friday. And they were supposed to bring samples for show.
Chris sighed. “No way am I going to talk about my favorite hobby,” he thought. His elder brother, Wes, laughed at him about it enough, and his dad didn't think much of it, either.
On the bus, Chris heard others talking about the “hobby”. Brian said he was going to bring his bowling trophies(保龄球奖杯). Chris turned around in his seat so that he wouldn't have to talk to them anymore.
“Don't believe him,” Nick whispered. “He's the worst bowler I've ever seen. He borrows the trophies from his dad, I guess. He's really a fake.”
At home, Chris pulled out his baseball cards. He liked baseball, and even played some. But his real hobby let him express things from his imagination, and that was what he liked most. Sorting through his cards, Chris began choosing some from the best ones. Yet he did not feel right about what he had decided.
Tuesday passed. Chris gathered his baseball supplies and put them in a grocery bag marked “My Favorite Hobby”. He was ready for Friday, but still felt something was wrong. He walked out of his room, ignoring the sketchbook(写生本) on his desk.
On Wednesday after school Chris sat at the kitchen table with a sandwich, but he wasn't hungry. He didn't want to be a fake like Brian, but he wasn't sure he had the courage to tell everyone his real hobby. What would the guys think of him
He chewed his sandwich slowly, thinking of Grandma. She was the reason he'd got interested in his hobby in the first place. “You have talent,” Grandma had told him proudly, admiring his work. And that felt really good.
Suddenly, Chris knew what he had to do. He dropped his sandwich on the plate and rushed to the phone. “Hi, Grandma, this is Chris. I need your help.”
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
“Are you ready,Chris ”Mrs. Griswell asked and everyone in the class turned to look at him.

When Chris pulled out a headband(头带)he designed, the class became quiet.

第二节
One possible version:
“Are you ready,Chris ”Mrs. Griswell asked and everyone in the class turned to look at him. Chris walked to the front of the classroom, clutching his grocery bag. His heart was pounding, and his legs felt shaky. “Go ahead,” Mrs. Griswell said, smiling. Chris nodded. So he began. “I design things. I mean...I design clothes and accessories.” There were giggles and sneers. “I'm a fashion designer.” He brought out his sketchbook and flipped through pages showing his designs for jackets, caps, pants and shirts. There were still a few snickers.
When Chris pulled out a headband(头带)he designed, the class became quiet. He designed a black and blue pattern in the band and attached a small stone in the place of the forehead. For girls, it was pink and purple with a small seashell. He heard someone say, “Cool!” A few of the classmates nodded enthusiastically. “My grandma designs clothes, too,” he explained, feeling a burst of hope. “She helped and we made headbands for everyone!” The whole class buzzed with excitement. Chris grinned. Now things finally felt right!
