Recently I've been drawn to books which motivate me to look at myself, and hopefully make me a better "me". The Courage to Be Disliked, by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koya, has a title I just can't go past.
The book has taken Japan by storm, using the theories of philosopher Alfred Adler to create conversations between a fictional philosopher and a young man. The conversations cover many broad, interesting and sensitive topics. The philosopher character sticks by the theories of Adler, and explains how we are competent to determine our own lives, and be free of the influence of past experiences and others' expectations. It's a way of thinking that allows us to develop the courage to change and to ignore the limitations placed on us.
These often complex topics are played out in a conversational style between the two men. While it's easy to follow the conversations, the topics will knock around in your own head as you work out whether you sit on the side of the philosopher, the young man, or somewhere in between. The book is well-received by readers primarily owing to the fact that it presents two well-balanced viewpoints in the arguments. You'll find yourself doing household chores, or at your keyboard, unpacking all the information in your mind and coming to your own conclusions.
You will wholeheartedly agree on some points and want to throw the book at the wall at others. Its content is polarizing (两极分化) and I certainly don't agree with everything the philosopher or the young man says, but I think that's the point. The Courage to Be Disliked is there to start a conversation with yourself and do some slightly uncomfortable soul-searching.
31.Which category does the book belong to
A.Self-improvement. B.Philosophy theory.
C.Collection of experiences. D.Biography of Alfred Adler.
32.Which statement might the fictional philosopher agree with
A.People are free of their past influence.
B.People can take charge of their life course.
C.People should live up to others' expectations.
D.People ought to take their limitations seriously.
33.How does the book develop
A.By listing sufficient data. B.By making comparisons.
C.By following the time line. D.By presenting dialogues.
34.Why is the book popular with readers
A.It shows ideas in plain language.
B.It displays the scientific statistics.
C.It offers balanced sides to the topics.
D.It avoids the use of philosophic terms.
【答案】31.A
32.B
33.D
34.C
Recently I've been drawn to books which motivate me to look at myself, and hopefully make me a better ‘me'. The Courage to Be Disliked, by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koya, has a title I just can't go past." The Courage to Be Disliked is there to start a conversation with yourself and do some slightly uncomfortable soul-searching."《被讨厌的勇气》可以激发你和自己的对话,做一些稍微不舒服的自我反省。 故选A。
The philosopher character sticks by the theories of Adler, and explains how we are competent to determine our own lives, and be free of the influence of past experiences and others' expectations."
These often complex topics are played out in a conversational style between the two men."
The book is well-received by readers primarily owing to the fact that it presents two well-balanced viewpoints in the arguments."

Applied Ethics
Although ethics classes are common around the world, scientists are unsure if their lessons can actually change behavior; evidence either way is weak, relying on contrived laboratory tests or sometimes unreliable self-reports. But a new study published in Cognition found that, in at least one real-world situation, a single ethics lesson may have had lasting effects.
The researchers investigated one class session's impact on eating meat. According to study co-author Eric Schwitzgebel, a philosopher at the University of California, Riverside: students' attitudes on the topic are variable and unstable, behavior is easily measurable, and ethics literature largely agrees that eating less meat is good because it reduces environmental harm and animal suffering. Half of the students in four large philosophy classes read an article on the ethics of factory-farmed meat, optionally watched an 11-minute video on the topic and joined a 50-minute discussion. The other half focused on charitable giving instead. Then, unbeknownst to the students, the researchers studied their anonymized meal-card purchases for that semester — nearly 14,000 receipts for almost 500 students. "It's an awesome data set," says Nina Strohminger, a psychologist who teaches business ethics at the University of Pennsylvania and was not involved in the study.
Schwitzgebel predicted the intervention would have no effect; he had previously found that ethics professors do not differ from other professors on a range of behaviors, including voting rates, blood donation and returning library books. But among student subjects who discussed meat ethics, meal purchases containing meat decreased from 52 to 45 percent — and this effect held steady for the study's duration of several weeks. Purchases from the other group remained at 52 percent.
"That's actually a pretty large effect for a pretty small intervention." Schwitzgebel says. Strohminger agrees: "The thing that still blows my mind is that the only thing that's different between these two cases is just that one day in class." She says she wants the effect to be real but cannot rule out some unknown confounding variable. And if real. Strohminger notes, it might be reversible by another nudge: "Easy come, easy go."
Schwitzgebel suspects the greatest impact came from social influence — classmates or teaching assistants leading the discussions may have shared their own vegetarianism, showing it as achievable or more common. Second, the video may have had an emotional impact. Least rousing, he thinks, was rational argument, although his co-authors say reason might play a bigger role. Now the researchers are probing the specific effects of teaching style, teaching assistants' eating habits and students' video exposure. Meanwhile Schwitzgebel who had predicted no effect — will be eating his words.
35. Paragraph 2 is mainly about ____.
A.Research reasons and process
B.Research subjects and findings
C.Research topic and significance
D.Research data collection and analysis
36. Which of the following doesn't lead to the researchers' investigation into meat-eating among students
A.Students' knowledge of the topic.
B.Students' easily-measured behaviors.
C.Students' changeable and unsteady attitudes.
D.Students' unawareness of ethics lessons' impact.
37. What does the underlined phrase "blows my mind" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Convinces me. B.Upsets me.
C.Alarms me. D.Amazes me.
38. What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To prove Schwitzgebel's prediction is wrong.
B.To show teaching works in behavior changing.
C.To explain students are easy to make a change.
D.To justify investigation into ethics is worthwhile.
【答案】35.A
36.D

38.D
The researchers investigated one class session's impact on eating meat. "研究人员调查了一节课对吃肉的影响;以及"Half of the students in four large philosophy classes read an article on the ethics of factory-farmed meat, optionally watched an 11-minute video on the topic and joined a 50-minute discussion. The other half focused on charitable giving instead. Then, unbeknownst to the students, the researchers studied their anonymized meal-card purchases for that semester — nearly 14,000 receipts for almost 500 students." 故选A。
根据第二段中的"students' attitudes on the topic are variable and unstable, behavior is easily measurable, and ethics literature largely agrees that eating less meat is good because it reduces environmental harm and animal suffering. "学生对这个话题的态度是多变和不稳定的,行为很容易衡量,伦理文献基本上同意少吃肉类是好的,因为它可以减少对环境的伤害和动物的痛苦。可知,学生对该主题的了解(相关伦理文献)、学生易于衡量的行为和学生多变和不稳定的态度都是导致了研究人员对学生吃肉的调查,"学生不知道道德课的影响"未提及。故选D。
37.考查词义猜测。根据第四段中的"‘That's actually a pretty large effect for a pretty small intervention.' Schwitzgebel says. Strohminger agrees: ‘The thing that still blows my mind is that the only thing that's different between these two cases is just that one day in class.'""对于一个很小的干预来说,这实际上是一个相当大的影响。"Schwitzgebel说。Strohminger对此表示赞同:"blows my mind的东西是,这两种情况之间唯一不同的地方就是上课的那一天。"可知,很小的干预有很大影响,这反差令人震惊,Strohminger也表示同意。可推知,划线短语blows my mind应该是"令我震惊",故选D。
38.考查推理判断。根据第一段"Although ethics classes are common around the world, scientists are unsure if their lessons can actually change behavior; evidence either way is weak, relying on contrived laboratory tests or sometimes unreliable self-reports. But a new study published in Cognition found that, in at least one real-world situation, a single ethics lesson may have had lasting effects. "尽管伦理学课程在世界各地都很常见,但科学家们不确定他们的课程是否真的能改变行为;无论哪种方式的证据都很薄弱,依赖于人为的实验室测试或有时不可靠的自我报告。但发表在《认知》杂志上的一项新研究发现,至少在一种现实世界中,一堂伦理课可能会产生持久的影响;第四段中的"‘That's actually a pretty large effect for a pretty small intervention.' Schwitzgebel says. ""对于一个很小的干预来说,这实际上是一个相当大的影响。"Schwitzgebel说;以及最后一段中的"Schwitzgebel suspects the greatest impact came from social influence — classmates or teaching assistants leading the discussions may have shared their own vegetarianism, showing it as achievable or more common. Second, the video may have had an emotional impact. Least rousing, he thinks, was rational argument, although his co-authors say reason might play a bigger role. Now the researchers are probing the specific effects of teaching style, teaching assistants' eating habits and students' video exposure."(Schwitzgebel怀疑最大的影响来自社会影响——领导讨论的同学或助教可能分享了他们自己的素食主义,这表明素食主义是可以实现的或更普遍。

When we are tired or injured, we often go to bed earlier to recharge and mend our bodies. That's because we often think that night is a golden time to deal with stress or injuries. But is it true
Nathaniel Hoyle, a scientist of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, has been leading a study into this topic. The team discovered that fibroblast cells(成纤维细胞) in the body switch off at night. These cells help close up a wound after the skin is broken and lay a foundation for new skin to grow. Why exactly are these cells less active at night
It's all to do with your body's circadian (昼夜节律的) rhythm—a 24-hour internal clock that helps your cells do their jobs on time. New Scientist reported that a group of 30 genes that control the fibroblasts worked only daytime shifts, causing the slower healing process at night.
To test its theory, the Cambridge-based team examined data from the International Burn Injury Database, which records details of burn victims around the world. This analysis revealed that nighttime burns, on average, took 11 more days to heal than burns during the day.
A similar result occurred while experimenting using live mice. Those that were cut during night-time hours recovered more slowly than those during the day. "You can see by eyes, when the cell is wounded only 8 hours apart from each other, in a different circadian periods, the daytime wounded ones take off, and the nighttime ones drag," research team member John O'Neill told Science Alert.
He added, "The time-varying response may be an evolutionary adaptation. As people are more likely to sustain injuries when awake than when sleeping, perhaps our bodies are prepared to respond more quickly in the daytime." He went on to say that it could be beneficial to schedule surgeries in time with people's circadian rhythms, earlier for early birds and later for night owls, in order to lessen recovery time. However, in any case, it might be best not to use anything sharp once the sun goes down.
39.What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To explain how we recharge our bodies.
B.To arouse the interest of the readers in the topic.
C.To prove that everyone suffers stress and injuries.
D.To introduce a new discovery for dealing with stress.
40.What do the researchers find during their research
A.Burns take the same time to heal regardless of their cut time.
B.Fibroblast cells boost the healing by working nighttime shift.
C.Mice respond differently in the healing process from humans.
D.A body's circadian rhythm matters in waking up fibroblast cells.
41.What can we learn according to John O'Neill
A.People tend to bear pain more when they are asleep.
B.Sharp knives are not suggested in the middle of the day.
C.Night owls operated on in the nighttime may recover sooner.
D.Evolution adaptation causes people's time-varying responses.
42.What can be a suitable title for this passage
A.Why We Heal Injuries Better in the Daytime
B.A Research Offers Clues to Treating Injuries
C.How We Heal Wounds and Injuries Effectively
D.Scientists Unlock the Secret to Avoiding Injuries
【答案】39.B
40.D
41.D

When we are tired or injured, we often go to bed earlier to recharge and mend our bodies. That's because we often think that night is a golden time to deal with stress or injuries. But is it true "当我们累了或受伤时,我们经常早点上床睡觉,为我们的身体充电和修复。
The team discovered that fibroblast cells(成纤维细胞) in the body switch off at night." Why exactly are these cells less active at night ("为什么这些细胞在晚上的活性会降低?;以及第三段中的"It's all to do with your body's circadian (昼夜节律的) rhythm—a 24-hour internal clock that helps your cells do their jobs on time."
The time-varying response may be an evolutionary adaptation. As people are more likely to sustain injuries when awake than when sleeping, perhaps our bodies are prepared to respond more quickly in the daytime. "时变反应可能是一种进化适应。由于人们在清醒时比在睡觉时更容易受伤,也许我们的身体已经做好了在白天更快反应的准备。可推测,进化适应使得人产生时变反应。故选D。
42.考查标题归纳。根据第二段中的"The team discovered that fibroblast cells(成纤维细胞) in the body switch off at night. These cells help close up a wound after the skin is broken and lay a foundation for new skin to grow. Why exactly are these cells less active at night "研究小组发现,人体内的成纤维细胞在夜间会关闭。 故选A。

Bee protection is a big issue these days in America, with people planting native pollinator(传粉者) gardens, setting up bee houses, and taking part in scientific activities to monitor local bee populations. And this is for good reason—in North America, a quarter of native bee species are at risk of extinction. Bees pollinate 35 percent of our global food supply and many of the wild plants our ecosystems depend on.
No Mow May, a movement that began in the UK, is now rapidly spreading throughout the US. Its popularity lies in its being simple: Just give bees a help during the crucial spring-time by removing a chore from your list and letting your lawn(草坪) grow for the month of May. This lets "lawn flowers" such as dandelions(蒲公英) grow at a time when bee foods rare.
Dandelions, despite being pretty and useful, are non-native. Then why do we promote a movement that encourages their growth Here's the basic answer-don't let "perfect" be the enemy of "good". Sure, it'd be great to turn your entire neighborhood into a bee kingdom of native plants, but that can take lots of time and money.
While dandelions have become the poster child for No Mow May, other plants—including native species—may also appear in your lawn. "Besides dandelions, there are many other plants that are going to be there," says Dr. Claudio Gratton at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
In Massachusetts, scientists found 63 species of plants in lawns, 30 percent of which were native to the state. Most of the Americans probably loved dandelions as children but have tended to hate them as adults because of American lawn culture, which allows no flowers. "No Mow May forces us to think about our relationship with nature. We should reflect on the way we have made nature suit our needs, and realize flowers play really important roles," says Dr. Claudio Cratton.
46.What is the background to No Mow May in the US
A.Native bee species are increasing.
B.There is a tendency to protect bees.
C.Bees mainly depend on garden plants.
D.More people have no time to cut lawns.
47.What do we know about the No Mow May
A.It needs almost no cost.
B.Few Americans support it.
C.It is aimed at growing dandelions.
D.It appeals for careful attention to the lawns.
48.What does the underlined part "poster child" in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Slight element. B.Rare exception.
C.Typical example. D.Difficult problem.
49.Which of the following agrees with American lawn culture
A.A bee-friendly lawn. B.A regularly cut lawn.
C.A lawn growing naturally. D.A lawn with native flowers.
【答案】46.B
47.A
48.C
49.B
Bee protection is a big issue these days in America, with people planting native pollinator gardens, setting up bee houses, and taking part in scientific activities to monitor local bee populations. And this is for good reason—in North America, a quarter of native bee species are at risk of extinction. Bees pollinate 35 percent of our global food supply and many of the wild plants our ecosystems depend on."
No Mow May, a movement that began in the UK, is now rapidly spreading throughout the US. Its popularity lies in its being simple: Just give bees a help during the crucial springtime by removing a chore from your list and letting your lawn grow for the month of May. This lets‘lawn flowers' such as dandelions grow at a time when bee food is rare." 故选A。
根据第四段中的"other plants-including native species — may also appear in your lawn"可知,蒲公英是"No Mow May"运动扩展后常见的花,而这项运动也会让草坪上长出其他种类的花。
Its popularity lies in its being simple: Just give bees a help during the crucial springtime by removing a chore from your list and letting your lawn grow for the month of May." Most of the Americans probably loved dandelions as children but have tended to hate them as adults because of American lawn culture, which allows no flowers."

38. What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To prove Schwitzgebel's prediction is wrong.
B.To show teaching works in behavior changing.
C.To explain students are easy to make a change.
D.To justify investigation into ethics is worthwhile.

A.It needs almost no cost.
B.Few Americans support it.
C.It is aimed at growing dandelions.

A.Slight element. B.Rare exception.
C.Typical example. D.Difficult problem.
49.Which of the following agrees with American lawn culture
A.A bee-friendly lawn. B.A regularly cut lawn.
C.A lawn growing naturally. D.A lawn with native flowers.
