To learn to think is to learn to question. Those who don’t question never truly think for themselves. Advancements(进步) are made when thinkers start to question. Unfortunately, it is often the great and respected thinkers who end up slowing the progress of human thought.
Aristotle was an ancient Greek philosopher and scientist whose ideas explained much of the natural world, often incorrectly. He was so respected by the scientific community that even 1,200 years after his death, scientists were still trying to build upon his mistakes rather than correct them! Brilliant minds can make up and coming thinkers believe they are not as good as the minds of giants such as Aristotle, leading many to accept current ideas instead of questioning them.
I like many thinkers of the past, once believed in my mental weakness. I was certain that my parents, my teachers were always right. They were like a textbook to me; I didn’t question what was written on those pages. I respected them, and accepted whatever they told me. But that attitude soon changed. My mind’s independence was first developed in the classroom.
Astem, a 65-year-old science teacher, once told me that light is a type of wave. I confidently went through years of school believing that. One day, however, I heard the German exchange student mention that light could be made of particles(粒子). I started to question my beliefs. I went to the library, read about Einstein’s discovery that puzzles the world’s greatest thinkers—Light behaves as both a particle and a wave. I realized I had gone through life accepting only half of the story as the whole truth.
Each new year brought more new facts, and I found myself in the library after school trying to find my own answers to gain a more complete understanding of what I thought I already knew. I discovered that my parents and teachers are good tools in my quest for knowledge, but they are never the final word. That’s how I developed my independent mind.
Questions are said to be the path to knowledge and truth, and I plan to continue questioning. How many things do we know for sure today that we will question in the future At this moment, I know that our sun will burn for another five billion years, and I know nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole. This knowledge, however, may change in the next 20 years — maybe even in the next two. The one thing we can control now is our openness to discovery, which is the key to making progress for human beings!
24.In this passage, Aristotle is taken as an example to show that ________.
A.he is the greatest and respected scientist of all
B.huge influence of great thinkers may stop human thought from developing
C.advancements are made when thinkers start to question
D.great thinkers make mistakes and then correct them
25.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 has an adverbial clause which expresses ________.
A.reason B.purpose C.result D.time
26.Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage
A. B. C. D.
27.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.The author is not quite sure about his future.
B.We human beings are afraid of dreaming about the future.
C.The things about black holes will change in two years.
D.Questioning is necessary to intellectual advancement.

Years ago, I interviewed a successful advertising man. ____28____ I never believed he could make it. About ten years later, however, I was surprised to see the man on TV, holding up his new book. He has published more than 100 best sellers.
His ability to see himself as a writer shows a concept (理念) known as “possible selves.” It describes how people picture their future life: what they may become, or want to become, or even fear to become.
____29____ What you imagine can come true if you build a bridge from your “now” self to your possible self. But how do we build that bridge Here are a few steps you can try.
First of all, just take action. If you’re dreaming of a certain job, attend a course, follow someone who does what you want to do and start by taking up that type of work as a hobby or a side job. You should tell yourself that these are the steps you can take to achieve that goal (目标).
A study of adults aged between 23 and 72 found that more than 70 percent of those who sent weekly progress to a friend completed their goals, twice the percentage of those who didn’t share written goals. So secondly, when you have a goal, share it. ____30____ That finding held true for all goals.
Finally, try looking toward people you know only by chance for advice, or those with whom you haven’t spoken in years. A lot of research has found that when you’re asking for valuable advice, people in your larger network are more likely (可能) to help you than those closest to you. ____31____
A. Ask your best friends to share their goals.
B. A possible self can take you beyond daydreams.
C. He told me that he dreamed of being a writer in fact.
D. So, reach out to your weak connections for it when needed.

How do we know about things that happened thousands of years ago when there were no videos or photos One answer is written records. The earliest written records of Chinese civilization (文明) are known as oracle bone inscriptions (甲骨文).
More than 3, 000 years ago, people in the Shang Dynasty (about 16th—11th century BC) liked to ask fortune tellers (占卜师) about the future. For example, what will the weather be like next week Where should I go to make money Will my wife give birth to a boy or a girl From work to love, people asked questions about many topics. The fortune teller would write the question on an oracle bone, heat it up, and then read the cracks (裂纹) in it to find an answer.
Tens of thousands of oracle bones have been found so far. They can tell us a great deal about how people lived during the Shang Dynasty. “They help us understand the origins of Chinese philosophy (哲学) and thought, and figure out where our culture comes from,” Song Zhenhao, a leading oracle bone expert, told China Daily.
In addition to (除了) telling us about ancient Chinese culture, the oracle bones are also key to understanding the growth and development of the written form of the Chinese language. Many of the characters (汉字) we use today are similar to those used 3, 000 years ago. “The or cte bone inscriptions, as the earliest-known mature (成熟的) form of Chinese characters, represent the beauty and uniqueness (唯一) of a language that has been passed down,” said Chen Nan, a professor at Tsinghua University.
In 2017, UNESCO added oracle bone inscriptions to its Memory of the World Register (“世界记忆”名录). They are indeed a valuable memory of ancient China.

Karlsson, a Swedish teacher at Beijing Union University (BUU), has lived in China for over 15 years. The seeds (种子) of his China journey were sown when he joined in a program for East Asian studies at Lund University in Sweden in 1997. Back then, cellphones and the Internet hadn’t yet come into wide use. Learning Chinese meant using textbooks, heavy dictionaries and audio tapes. He would read the dictionary carefully for hours to understand a one-page Chinese article.
“In those days, it was a real challenge,” he said.
In 2006, with a high score in the official Chinese language test, he won a scholarship for a five-week summer program at Beijing Language and Culture University.
After finishing the study program, Karlsson was offered a Beijing-based job as a market researcher. In 2008, the year Beijing succeeded in hosting the Summer Olympic Games, he got married. In the next year, he started to teach business at BUU.
Life in Beijing has been a wonderful adventure (异乎寻常的经历), especially as a witness to the great achievements China has made. It has offered him many chances for personal growth. Today, thanks to high-speed broadband and 5G, he can connect with students at BUU’s partner universities in Russia, Montenegro or Mexico while riding on the Beijing subway.
“When you open your eyes to these great projects, it is impossible not to want to be part of them or at least support them somehow,” he said.
Although he was busy on teaching days, Karlsson applied for a full-time scholarship at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. In 2023, at 45 years old, he got his Ph.D. in economics. “I am quite interested in blockchain technology, and I know that China is quickly becoming the leader in blockchain applications outside the cryptocurrency space. So, I always write my articles in this area,” he said.
“There is always time to follow your dreams unless you decide to give up,” he said. “Taking on seemingly impossible challenges and also helping those around you are what makes life worth living.”
