On March 22nd, World Water Day is a day to celebrate water and make a difference for people who do not have the water they need.
The truth about the world
The truth is that we are lucky enough to have clean water whenever we want, but this is not the case for many people around the world. Did you know that around 750 million people do not have clean water to drink That’s around 1 in 10 people in the world.
But what does this mean
If we drink dirty water, we can catch diseases from the bacteria (细菌) and become ill. Every year over 500,000 children die from dirty water. That’s around 1,400 children every day! In Ghana, 85% of all disease are from dirty water, and in Nicaragua, 75% of the people don’t have clean drinking water. Also, in some countries children walk many kilometres every day to get water, they can’t go to school so they don’t learn how to read and write and don’t get an education.
Water for everyone
In 1993 the United Nations decided that March 22nd is the World Day for Water. On this day every year, countries around the world hold events to educate people about the problems of dirty water. People organize events to raise money.
For World Water Day, some people in the UK walk, run or cycle 10 km, others climb mountains or even jump from an aeroplane and skydive to the ground. At one school, children between the ages of 10 and 15 walk 6 km with 6 litres of water, so they can see how it feels to walk a long distance carrying heavy bottles of water. It wasn’t until the nineteenth century, though, that gas lighting was used in Europe. The first gas streetlights appeared in London in 1807. There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often the whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains had been their favourite relatives. This was the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved by them.
I had always travelled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly enjoy the long train journey and had brought along a dozen newspapers and magazines to read and reread.
It was not long before the train was rattling across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Bahru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately, I came alive and decided to wave back.
From then on, my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I had been looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 p.m. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful.
I looked forward to the return journey, by train.

But nobody believed him. The rich man couldn’t understand why they didn’t believe him. One day he went for a walk by the lake. Under a tree he happened to hear a pig and a cow talking. The pig said to the cow, “Why does everybody like you and nobody likes me After I die, I provide people with pork, ham and so on. I give three or four things to them. But you give only one thing—milk. Why do people like you all the time and not me ” The cow said, “Look, I give them milk while I’m alive. They see that I am generous with what I have. But you don’t give them anything before you die. You give them ham, pork and so on only after you’re dead. People don’t believe in the future; they believe in the present. Protecting the environment is crucial, and it starts with us.
First, let’s reduce plastic use by bringing our own water bottles and lunch boxes. This will cut down on waste. Also, remember to turn off lights and electronics when not in use to save energy.
We should plant more trees around the campus for fresh air and to fight climate change. Additionally, set up recycling bins and learn what can be recycled to create a culture of recycling.
Encourage sharing and repairing instead of throwing away. Spread the word about the importance of a green lifestyle to our friends and family, affecting our community too.
To sum up, going green isn't just a one-time thing; it's a lifestyle. It takes small, consistent actions to make a big difference. Let's work together to build a sustainable campus now for our future.
