It is read as pi. Pi is a very special irrational number(无理数). In the pi calculation(计算), no two same numbers show up next to each other. Pi isn’t just for math—it shows up in nature, too. You can find it in circles like the sun, the spiral(螺旋) of DNA and the eye’s pupil(瞳孔). We can also find pi in the rivers.
Every year on March 14, students celebrate Pi Day by enjoying pies. Can you guess why The date marks the first three digits(数字) of pi—3.14.
In 2019, UNESCO set the day as the International Day of Mathematics. The day is to celebrate the beauty and importance of math.
Pi Day in China honors Chinese mathematician(数学家) Zu Chongzhi (429-500AD). He calculated pi as being between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927. No one could work out a better calculation for it for over 800 years.
In 1988, US physicist(物理学家) Larry Shaw started the Pi Day celebration. During the first event, Shaw and his friends walked around a circular(圆形的) space because pi helps us know about calculations of circles. Nowadays, people celebrate Pi Day in fun and interesting ways. For example, students in the US usually eat pies and throw pies toward each other. In Japan, Fukuoka High School brings pi memorization(记忆) competitions into its Pi Day celebrations. “We compete to recite(背诵) as many digits of pi as we can. It shows our memory skills,” said Ai Akasaki, 16, from the school.
Some schools let students show their artistic(艺术的) side through artworks about pi. Recently, Johanna Elisabeth Senst, a 15-year-old German girl, built a building model with Lego about pi. One day in July when I was completely well again, I put some food and water in a bag and went exploring(探究).
I walked along the coast until I got to a small river. Then I followed it across the island. The land on both sides of the river was very nice. It was flat and green and many different plants were growing there. I looked for things to eat, but I didn’t find anything. The next day I decided to go further. I was curious(好奇的) to see more of the green valley(山谷). I walked for many hours and finally I arrived in a place with many trees. I could see oranges and lemons on them. I also saw grapes and melons too.
“The north side of the island is better than the south,” I thought. “There are lots of things to eat. The weather is better here too. I chose the bad side for my house.”
I didn’t go back to my seaside house that night. I slept in a tree and continued exploring the next morning. Before I left that place, I filled my pockets with fruit.
“I must come back with bags and get some more,” I thought. “But I must hurry because the wet season starts in August.”
I made several more trips during the following weeks and took back as much fruit as I could. While I was there, I built a small tent to sleep in. Now I had my second house—a country house!
It rained more or less every day between the middle of August and the middle of October and I had to stay in the seaside house. But when the weather changed, I often went to my country house.
There were lots of small animals in the woods and turtles(龟) on the beach, so I was never without meat. I also found that turtle eggs were very good to eat too. I dried some of the meat in the sun and kept it for the wet season. I dried the grapes too. They were very good and I usually kept some in my pockets.
One day when I was standing on the top of a hill, I saw land far away. “Was it the mainland or an island ” I asked myself. Another day I caught a parrot and took it home with me. I called it Poll and I taught it to speak. The first word it learnt to say was its name. Then I taught it to say “Robinson”. It was strange to hear another voice after so many months. Poll was very good company(陪伴) and relieved(缓解) my loneliness.
