(中华优秀传统文化) Guqin is an about 1,000-year-old instrument from the Tang dynasty. At first, guqin’s name is “qin”. As many western instruments came into China, people added the “gu”, meaning “the ancient”. The history of guqin started from 3,000 years ago in the Zhou dynasty. At first it had five strings (弦), with two added later by the emperor of the Zhou dynasty.
In ancient times, guqin was considered as an important part of Chinese high culture. It was a matter that only noblemen (贵族) would be able to play it. It is no doubt the most important shown-up subject matter in Chinese culture.
Many stories and idioms (成语) came from Chinese guqin music. For example, the idiom “high mountains and flowing water”, which is used to describe a pair of friends, is about the story of Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi. Their friendship was set up by the same understanding of guqin music.
Guqin has three types of sounds. They are Sanyin, Fanyin and Anyin. All these sounds are believed to have one thing in common: giving people a sense of peace. If you listen to them, you will be calm and quiet.
The Chinese believe that guqin has included the sounds of the universe (宇宙). When the Voyager 2 was launched into space, a record was taken. It included a piece of guqin music Flowing Streams played by a Chinese guqin master.

The loveliest house that I’d ever lived in was the one that I lived in with my grandparents when I was a child. And the name of the house was Crosslands.
It seemed so huge to me as a child. It had a lovely living room with a piano in it. And there was a strange room. It was the drawing room. 我们只在周末时使用它. I used to be amazed about this room because it had the best furniture in it but it was covered with sheets—it was as if all the furniture was wearing clothes——and it seemed to me crazy that we couldn’t enjoy this beautiful furniture all the week through really.
Now, I went back to it a few years ago and it was a big mistake. They’ve modernized (现代化) it inside, and they’ve taken away that lovely furniture. And they’ve knocked a wall down so the drawing room and the living room have become one big room.

Today, people still follow Confucius’ lessons. He told us that each person has something worthy to learn and teach. “When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I choose their good qualities and follow them. I take their bad qualities and change them in myself. ”
He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. “All study but no thinking makes people puzzled. All thinking but no study makes people lazy.”

Before you go to another country, it is a great help if you know the language and some of the customs of the country.
When people meet each other for the first time in Britain, they say “Hello!” or “Nice to meet you.” and shake hands. Usually they do not shake hands when they just meet or say goodbye. But they shake hands after they haven’t met for a long time or when they will be away from each other for a long time.
Last year a group of German students went to England for a holiday. Their teacher told them that the English people hardly shake hands. Earthquakes happen very often in Tokyo, but Tokyo is not an unlucky city. Many special parks have been built in Tokyo to keep people safe during earthquakes. These parks look nothing different from the other parks, but when earthquakes happen, they become life saving places.
Many useful things in those special parks can meet people’s basic needs. For example, it is usually hard for people to get water after earthquakes. In the special parks, people can get drinking water from the water pump (泵). If people need to use toilets, they can choose special toilets that can be used without water. Also, the helicopter (直升机) can land on squares or baseball fields and bring food or other things to people. What’s more, if people need to cook in the parks, some special benches (长凳) can become cooking things.
However, those useful things are not enough for people to face earthquakes. The most important part lies in training people. The parks, together with fire stations and the police, will train with local people at the usual time. This will let people think and move faster during real earthquakes and let them protect themselves better.
(1)So what can we do to protect ourselves from getting hurt in earthquakes First, we need to check our furniture and make sure they won’t fall down easily. 第二,当地震发生,我们需要待在饭桌或书桌下,保护我们的头部。Third, we can keep our door open and wear comfortable shoes during small earthquakes in order to get out safely.

In the 1930s, Saudi Arabia was one of the poorest countries in the world, but the discovery (发现) of oil changed this, and now it has become one of the world’s richest countries.
America is now the world’s biggest producer of oil and gas (燃气). However, it still buys a lot of oil from other countries, because it is the country that uses the most oil in the world as well. In fact, oil provides about one third of the world’s energy.
By 2040, the world’s energy use will increase about 30%. The clean energy must be used more if humans want to avoid weather change and serious global (全球) warming.
China is the world’s largest user of coal (煤) and the second largest user of oil, but it also leads the world in clean energy. One third of the world’s new wind power and solar panels (太阳能电池板) are in China, so it makes China become the biggest country which uses clean energy around the world. Also, it sells more electric cars than any other country.
We will run out of oil in the world, so it’s necessary for us to turn to clean energy. Of course, the change will face new challenges. For example, it is very expensive to develop clean energy.

Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history Many people would think of Confucius (孔子), whose birthday was on September 28th. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remember and respect him.
Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only 3. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn’t give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time, only children from noble (贵族的) families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they
wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.
孔夫子不仅是一个伟大的老师,也是一个对世界和社会有明智想法的思想家。His most important teachings are about kindness and good manners. “A kind person should care for others. Be strict with yourself, but be kind to others.”

So when they met their English friends at the station, they kept their hands behind their backs. The English students had learned that the Germans shake hands as often as possible, so they put their hands in front and got ready to shake hands with them. 这个行为使得大家都笑了。

There are some traditional arts that are connected with animals in China, like paper cutting, Chinese carving, Chinese clay and so on. Paper cutting in the shape of animals is one of the most common examples.
Paper cutting is an amazing art. People use scissors to cut paper into different shapes of animals, flowers, cute babies and so on. During the Spring Festival, people put them on windows, doors and walls as symbols of good luck. This art sounds easy but it can be difficult. For example, some works are about the twelve zodiac sighs (十二生肖). 2024 is the Year of Dragon, so people like to cut the red paper into dragons. When we see the masters cut paper, it only takes them a few minutes to complete everything, but for green hands, they need to practice for a long time.
4.剪纸有着悠久的历史。 It has been around for over 1,500 years. But it didn’t become popular until the 6th century. With the development of the art, it attracted many people. Even ladies in royal (皇家的) families were also judged by the ability in paper cutting. In the 21st century, red paper cutting which means good luck can be often seen in the new year or weddings.
All these pieces by hand look very real. Without doubt, they show the wisdom of Chinese people, and some products in the shape of animals reflect the relations between humans and animals. But it’s a pity that fewer and fewer young people show interest in it. 5. When they understand the real spirit of the art, they will finally fall in love with it.

China’s 15-year-old Chen Ye won gold in the men’s park final of skateboarding (滑板男子碗池决赛) at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sept 25th.
Chen started getting into this sport in 2016. “I remember one day I went to a sports store, and by chance, I saw a skateboard. I decided to give it a try and I found it very interesting,” Chen told China Youth Daily.
Gradually, Chen needed a better skatepark for training. To meet the need, his father decided to make a skate bowl himself. “He would work on it late into the night, sometimes until three or four in the morning,” said Chen. “I’m really thankful for my father’s support.”
As a junior high school student, Chen needed to find a balance between his schoolwork and skateboarding. His only “privilege (特权)” was being free from PE classes, during which he would do schoolwork because he needed to practice in his own skate bowl for hours after returning home. 在老师的帮助下,他早上训练,下午学习。
While getting ready for the competition this year, Chen even disagreed with his father over his study schedule.
He wanted to train for more hours at night to avoid influencing his daytime classes.
Looking at the seven years of learning skating, Chen said this experience made him stronger and more determined (坚定的) to do something he truly loves.
