On the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, some villagers cut down trees in a special way. If a tree is too large to be cut down with an ax (斧子), they try something else—yelling (喊叫) at it. Woodsmen with special powers
climb up a tree at dawn and yell at it at the top of their voices. They continue doing this for 30 days. After 30 days, the tree dies and falls over. It seems like the yelling kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works.
It’s too bad they don’t have the advantages of modern technology and a scientific mind.
No matter how true the story actually is, it reminds me of something. I often yell at my wife, the telephone and workers. And sometimes I even yell at the TV, the newspaper and my children. I have been known to shake my fist (拳头) and yell at the sky at times.
The man next door yells at his car a lot. And this summer I heard him yell at a ladder for most of an afternoon. We modern, educated people often yell at traffic, bills, banks and machines. Machines and relatives get yelled at the most.
It doesn’t do much good. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking it doesn’t usually help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to (有做……的倾向) kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.

第六部分 阅读表达(共3小题;1题2分,2题2分,3题3分,满分7分)
请认真阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题。
Why are so many people so afraid to fail Quite simply because no one tells us how to face the failure. In fact, failure can become experience that means growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.
Most parents work hard to prevent failure or protect their children. One way is to lower standards. Nearly 60% of the parents choose this way: When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as “perfect” even though it doesn’t stand still. The other way is to blame(责怪) others. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.
There’s a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for the real life if they don’t meet enough failure. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time. The young should be allowed to experience failure.
Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both grown-ups and children. But it can be really good to your life
when you learn to use it.
54.How many ways do most parents choose to prevent failure and protect their children
55.What should young people be allowed to experience

Dear Tom,
I'm glad to hear that you will come to Suzhou for winter vacation. Different countries have different customs and table manners. In China, you should smile and shake hands with your friends or relatives. If you're invited to dinner, you must be on time. While eating, you should not eat too much at a time. It's good manners to say “thanks” to the host when he asks you to help yourself to some food. When you are full, but the host still asks you to help yourself to more food, you should say, “Thank you. It's delicious, but I'm full.” It's polite to say thanks while leaving.
Have a good trip!
Best wishes.
