People have paid a lot of attention to the importance of getting enough sleep. It is usually believed that a common person should get about eight hours of enough sleep per night, though young children need more and the elderly generally require less. On the other hand, they pay less attention to this — the quality of one’s sleep and the effect that it has on health. Then a new study by researchers at the Center for Circadian and Sleep Medicine at Northwestern University in the United States has attracted people’s attention to this problem.
The sleep experts at Northwestern University carried out experiments (实验) including two groups of young adults, putting heart monitors (监视器) on them to see how different levels of light in a room at night influenced their physiological (心理) states. The results showed that bright light in one’s bedroom has a negative influence on their health.
In the study, one group of people slept in a room that was lit only by very weak light for two nights. The other 10 people slept one night under the same type of light and the second night in a room with a brighter light placed overhead. Besides monitoring their hearts, researchers recorded the sleepers’ brainwaves and drew their blood. The group that had slept under a brighter light on the second night showed higher heart rates during that time. Their
bodies also showed that they had trouble with their blood sugar levels.
The study suggests that sleeping in a room with bright light may have certain influence on health. Therefore, to make sure of a good night’s sleep, you can start by creating a bedroom without unwanted light at night.

6.What is Paragraph 3 mainly talking about

C.Who the research was for. D.Why the research was important.
7.What do the results of the research from Northwestern University suggest
A.Light at night can lead to terrible dreams.

The Tang dynasty ruled China for almost three hundred years. During the Tang dynasty, China was the biggest and richest country in the world. For a long time, clothing has been designed and chosen based or gender (性别). However, in recent years, these gender differences have become less clear.
According to a May report by Bilibili, views of videos about non-gendered fashion went up by 270 percent in 2023. Most of the viewers were born in or after 1995 — also known as Generation Z.

While writing this book, I once asked an expert how he kept from worrying. He replied, “I have always tried to follow the advice: when you have a lemon, make a lemonade (柠檬汁).”
That is what a wise man does. But the fool does just the opposite. If he finds that life has given him a “lemon”, he gives up and says, “I’m beaten. I haven’t got a chance.” Then he starts to develop a sense of self-pity. But when the wise man is handed a “lemon”, he says, “What lesson can I learn from the bad luck How can I improve my situation How can I turn this lemon into a lemonade ”
Here is an interesting story of a woman who did just that. Her name is Thelma. “During the war,” she told me about her experience, “my husband was sent to an Army training camp near the Mojave Desert. I went there to live with him. But I hated the place. I had never felt so terrible before. My husband was ordered out for training, so I was left alone most of the time. Not a friend to talk to but only the local people who couldn’t speak English. The wind never stopped blowing. All the food I ate and the air I breathed were filled with sand, sand, sand! I was so sorry for myself that I wrote to my parents. I said I couldn’t stand it one minute longer. My father answered my letter with just two lines—two lines that completely changed my life:
Two men looked out from prison bars (监狱铁窗).
One saw the mud (烂泥),the other saw stars.
I read those two lines over and over. I was ashamed of myself. I made up my mind I would find out what was good in my present situation. I would look for the stars.”

“Welcome to our new ‘classroom’!” said Chen Dong, one of the three astronauts of the Shenzhou XIV mission.
They were giving a science class 400 kilometers above Earth on Oct 12, 2022. It was the third space class from the Tiangong space station, but the first one from the Wentian module. The first two classes were held in the Tianhe module.
What does the new “classroom” look like Chen, together with Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, showed us around. “The beds in the Wentian module are kept upright,” said Liu. That means astronauts in the Wentian module need to sleep standing up! But as Liu explained, people don’t feel any difference because there’s no gravity (重力) in space.
The astronauts also showed their “space farm”, where lettuce, wheat, thale cress and rice are grown. “Take a picture!” “Send the picture!” Through a voice-controlled camera, Chen has already sent a picture of the thale cress to scientists on Earth. Then he used scissors to cut a sample (样本). “I’ll put it into a fridge at -80℃ and later give it to scientists on Earth,” said Chen. Scientists will study how the environment of space affects the growth of plants.
“Can you see the water drops coming from the leaves This is called ‘guttation’ (植物吐水).” said Liu, holding the well-grown rice. In space, the water drops are much bigger than those on Earth. So people can clearly see the guttation.
“We hope in the near future, we can harvest the food grown on our own,” said Chen. “Maybe one day, we can grow food on the moon or even on Mars!”
34.How do astronauts in the Wentian module sleep
A. B. C. D.

Soon after we arrived, the whole family sat down at the table for dinner. The farmer put me on the table, with some small pieces of bread and meat. I was very afraid of falling off the table. The farmer and his family were happy to watch me eating with my small knife and fork.
But when I started walking across the table to the farmer, his youngest son, a boy of about ten, picked me up by the legs. He held me so high in the air that my whole body was shaking. Luckily his father took me away at
once, and angrily hit the boy hard on the head. But I remembered how bad children can be to small animals. So I decided to forgive him. I fell on my knees and asked them not to punish the child any more. They seemed to understand.
Just then I heard a noise behind me. It sounded like twelve machines running at the same. I turned my head and saw a huge cat, three times larger than one of our cows. The farmer’s wife held it in her arms, so that it could not jump at me. But in fact, because I showed no fear, there was no danger, and the cat even seemed a little afraid of me.
At the end of dinner, a servant came in with the farmer’s one-year-old son in her arms. He immediately started crying, because he wanted to play with me. His mother smiled and put me in his hand. When he picked me up and put my head in his mouth, I shouted so loudly that he dropped me. Luckily, I was not hurt, but it showed me how dangerous life was going to be in Brobdingnag.

Humans are getting away from the nature gradually because of the developing technology. But now Digital Technology is offering us an opportunity to listen to the sounds in the nature in powerful ways, making us get closer to the worlds of animals and plants.
All around the nature, there are sounds that we struggle to pick up and understand. Elephants, for example, communicate with each other using infrasound, a sound far below our human hearing range. Coral in the ocean also communicates with each other through sound waves, with one purpose of attracting baby coral to areas where it can successfully grow. This is a shocking fact as coral doesn’t have any ears!
To pick up sounds humans are normally unable to bear, scientists have placed listening devices in these environments. Researchers have attached tiny microphones to honeybees and turtles, and stuck listening posts that can receive different sound waves from coral reefs and trees. These devices are controlled by computers and networked with digital sensors and satellites. When interconnected, they work like a hearing aid: enabling humans to observe and record nature’s sounds beyond the limits of our own listening ability. After the sounds are recorded, AI is then able to determine their meanings.
With this technology, humans can not only understand the animals, but also communicate back to them. For example, a team of researchers in Germany decoded the honeybees’ behavior with AI. Then they taught tiny robots how to do the honeybee dance. Using these dancing machines, the scientists were able to order the honeybees to stop moving, and to communicate where to fly to collect a specific nectar. In addition to the possibility of speaking with animals, the research could also be used to create a form of healing for animals and plants. That’s to say, in the near future, scientists might be able to get coral to grow in certain areas by playing “healthy reef” sounds, which could help to heal some of the damage we have caused.
Now, Digital Technology provides a new way for humans to listen to the vivid sounds all around us. The dream of allowing humans to socialize with different animals and plants throughout the nature is being on its way.
42.According to the passage, now people can use Digital Technology to ________.
A.see coral’s ears B.listen to the sounds of trees
C.play with elephants D.dance with honeybees themselves
43.What does “they” refer to in paragraph 3
A.devices B.computers C.trees D.satellites
44.What could most probably happen with the help of Digital Technology
A.More people will choose to live in the nature.
B.There will be much fewer animals in the nature.
C.People can protect the environment more easily.
D.Robots can be used to communicate with anything.

How was your sleep last night Sleep is important for health. How can we have a healthy sleep Take a look at some advice.
Wake up naturally
Waking up to a ringing alarm is never fun. Studies show that when you get shocked by the alarm, your breathing will go up, your heart will have more beats and your blood pressure will rise.
“This is a very unhappy way to start the day,” sleep scientist Whitney Roban said. “You’ll feel worse if you go back to sleep a few more minutes. It’s important to follow your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.”
So what should we do Try to use an alarm with softer and lower sounds. Or leave a crack (缝隙) in the curtains (窗帘)—the rising sun will wake you up.
Sleep early and get up early
Some young people may go to bed late and get up late, such as sleeping from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. They think as long as they have eight hours of sleep, everything will be fine.

Do you have a good memory Can you remember English words you learnt last week Or have you forgotten the deadline of your project Many of us often say “My brain doesn’t work well”. Maybe you can try a new way of training your brain-learn with your team members.
“Teamwork makes our brains work better. The memory expert, Jonathan Hancock said, “Being part of a team has many advantages for remembering things.” In his memory research, he finds that the participants (参与者) in a team always behave better than people who work independently. That’s because they have less personal pressure, more time to think over each question.
But there’s even more going on according to Canadian researchers, who’ve shown that our brains get a natural
improvement when they’ve got company (陪伴). Their study suggests two reasons. First, when we’re with people who are trying to remember something, we can easily feel that tip-of-the-tongue feeling, so we also want to join in to challenge ourselves. Second, after knowing others can remember things well, we can be encouraged to make it too.
To make better use of the power of team learning, you can use the contagion (传染效应) to awaken and improve memories. For example, go over new words together with your partners. Believe it or not, you’ll be amazed at your magic memory. Also, you can share the duty together. If you have many tasks to remember, ask your partner to remember the date of school play while you’re in charge of remembering project deadline. In this way, both of you will remember things more easily and deeply.
64.How does Jonathan Hancock support his opinion in Paragraph 2
A.By doing a research. B.By giving an example.
C.By providing a form. D.By listing numbers.
65.Which of the following situations matches “tip-of-the-tongue feeling” best
A.You bite your tongue and lose words.
B.You lose the control of the tip of your tongue.
C.You come up with an answer and express it quickly.
D.You think of something but can’t find a word to express it well.
66.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Ideas of learning English new words.
B.Ways of sharing memory duty with partners.
C.Advice on improving memories by teamwork.
D.Research about remembering the deadline of project.
67.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage
A.To introduce the results of some memory research.
B.To encourage people to use their brains more often.

A student project has discovered another power of AI: It can be good at locating (定位) where photos are taken.
The project is called Predicting Image Geolocations (or PIGEON). It’s the work of three Stanford students. They designed it in order to recognise locations on Google Street View (谷歌街景). The team showed the AI a few personal photos it had never seen before, it could tell where they were taken.
PIGEON works well because it can pick upon all the little things in photos. It can notice small differences in leaves, soil and weather. The group says the technology can be used in many ways. It could recognise roads or power lines that need fixing. It may also help researchers do surveys of invasive (入侵的) plants in an area.
However, this new power is likely to be a double-edged sword. It could be used to reveal people’s private, personal information, says Jay Stanley, an expert at the American Civil Liberties Union.
Stanley worries that companies might soon use AI to find out where you’ve traveled. Governments might check your photos to see if you’ve visited certain countries. Stalking (跟踪) is also a possible threat, he says. People have long been able to remove GPS location information from photos they post online. That may not work any more. Luckily, the Stanford students are well aware of the risks. Because of these worries, they haven’t given the public entry to their program.
Stanley thinks the use of AI for identifying locations will become even more powerful in the future. What will that mean Well, be very careful about what’s in the background in the photos you post online, he says.
68.What can PIGEON do according to the passage
A.It can tell where the photos were taken.
B.It is able to tell who took the photos.

D.It is able to tell the weather when photos were taken.
69.What can we infer from the passage
A.Nobody is interested in the new project PIGEON.
B.It’s not safe enough for the public to use PIGEON.
C.Only governments can check the countries we visited.
D.The project PIGEON is widely used in many ways now.
70.What is Stanley’s advice on sending pictures online
A.Governments should help to stop using PIGEON.
B.Teachers should teach students how to use PIGEON.
C.Parents should stop their kids from sending photos online.
D.Internet users should think twice before posting photos online.
71.What’s the best title for the passage

①There is really no reason for my writing the life of Su Tungpo except that I want to do it. For years, the writing of his biography (传记) has been at the back of my mind, but the regret is never quiet down. Now that I am able to apply myself to this task, I am happy, without any reasons.
②A vivid personality isn’t that easy to be understood. One might say that Su Tungpo was an unchangeable optimist (乐观主义者), a friend of the people, a prose master, an original painter, a great calligraphist, an experimenter in wine making, an engineer, a secretary to the emperor, a dissenter in politics, and a poet. And yet that might miss the sum total of why people like Su Tungpo. Su Tungpo’s complex personality gives a reason. Always deeply stuck in politics, he was always greater than politics. Without trick and without purpose, he went along singing, composing, and criticizing, to express something he felt in his heart, paying no attention to what might be the results of himself. He wrote just because he enjoyed writing, and today we enjoy his writing just because he wrote so beautifully, generously, and out of the clearness of his heart.
③As I try to find the reasons why for a thousand years in China each generation has a crowd of crazy admirers of this poet, I come to the second reason, which is the same as the first, stated in a different way. Su Tungpo had charm. The chief charm of Su Tungpo was a force of character (that could not be stopped by anyone), a force (that started at the moment of his birth, had to run its course until death closed his mouth and stopped his laughing chatter). He wielded his pen almost as if it were a toy. He could be curious, or humorous or serious, very serious, and from his pen we hear various human emotions of joy, happiness, worry and love.
④On the whole, we get the impression that he played and sang through life and enjoyed it greatly, and when sadness came and unluckiness fell, he accepted them with a smile. That is the kind of charm which I am trying to describe in my way and which has made him the favorite poet of so many Chinese experts.
72.What does the underlined words “this task” in Paragraph1 refer to
A.read the life of Su Tungpo B.read Su Tungpo’s poems
C.write the life of Su Tungpo D.write down Su Tungpo’s poems
73.What can we learn from the passage
A.Su Tungpo’s works were all full of joy and love.
B.Su Tungpo had a crowd of fans at home and abroad.
C.Su Tungpo was good at many things except making wine.
D.Su Tungpo always expressed himself without caring about the results.
74.What’s the meaning of the underlined word wielded in Paragraph 3
A.Cut B.bought C.used D.broke
75.What’s the structure of the passage (P① = paragraph ①)
A. B. C. D.
76.Which words can best describe Su Tungpo according to the passage
A.Beautiful and clear. B.Sad and changeable.
C.Serious and unlucky. D.Optimistic and charming.

Their bodies also showed that they had trouble with their blood sugar levels.
The study suggests that sleeping in a room with bright light may have certain influence on health. Therefore, to make sure of a good night’s sleep, you can start by creating a bedroom without unwanted light at night.
4.What does “this problem” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A.Difficulties in falling asleep. B.Not having enough sleep.
C.Quality of sleep and its effect. D.The importance of eight-hour sleep.

A.Pauline, an old professor who slept in the lab for two nights.
B.Kevin, a primary student who wrote down their thoughts about light.
C.Fannie, a young engineer who slept while his heart rate was recorded.
D.David, a college student who suggested sleeping with some light on.
6.What is Paragraph 3 mainly talking about
A.When the research was done. B.How the research was done.
C.Who the research was for. D.Why the research was important.
7.What do the results of the research from Northwestern University suggest
A.Light at night can lead to terrible dreams.
B.Light at night can influence blood sugar level.
C.Leaving a soft light on in a room can bring benefit to sleep.
D.Sleeping in a completely dark room can affect one’s health.

The Tang dynasty ruled China for almost three hundred years. During the Tang dynasty, China was the biggest and richest country in the world. It ruled other lands, including Korea, Iran, and a large part of Vietnam. The Japanese admired China and its culture so much that they copied much of it, even the written language.
________
The Tang emperors loved the arts, and especially poetry. Twenty-seven-year-old Xuanzong became emperor. He was skilled in music, poetry, and the art of beautiful writing. He liked poets, including two of the most famous poets in Chinese history: Li Bai and Du Fu. Li Bai took life easier while Du Fu was a very serious and hardworking young man who always wanted to be a government official.
A Period of Glory (荣耀)
During the Tang dynasty the country was full of creative energy. Foreigners were more welcome than ever before, and the mix of cultures and ideas made China an exciting place.
Tea became very popular during the Tang dynasty. Everyone loved to drink it. Tea was grown in China, and the traders who sold it became extremely rich. So much money was being used that China was running out of coins. The traders invented a kind of paper money that they called “flying money”, perhaps because the money flew so fast from one person to the next. This was the first type of paper money in the world.
A number of other inventions also took hold. At the end of the Tang dynasty, the invention of printing led to the creation of books. Hundreds of years would pass before printing was invented in Europe.
An Explosive (炸药) Discovery
An even more explosive discovery took place in China during the Tang dynasty. For many centuries, Chinese
scientists had tried to create gold and find the secret to living forever. The results of their experiments surprised them—the mixture exploded! The Chinese scientists had discovered gunpowder.
Under the Tang dynasty the Chinese used the gunpowder not for wars but for creating fireworks. It seems fitting that the wonderful Tang dynasty should be remembered for giving to the world the wonderful gift of fireworks.

C.To introduce their information. D.To show the influence of China.

A.books were first found in Europe
B.the way to create gold was discovered that time

For a long time, clothing has been designed and chosen based or gender (性别). However, in recent years, these gender differences have become less clear.
According to a May report by Bilibili, views of videos about non-gendered fashion went up by 270 percent in 2023. Most of the viewers were born in or after 1995 — also known as Generation Z.
Eric Liu, a fashion blogger in Shanghai, is a fan of non-gendered fashion. He told Jing Daily that he often buys from the women’s bag section because men don’t have many choices for bags. “As a straight man, I don’t feel embarrassed about carrying a bag designed for women because no one has pointed that out,” Liu said.
As society has become more open, people can choose from a greater number of styles. Women and men share more similar lifestyles these days, which means they need clothing that goes with their lifestyle.
“The wearer and the clothes together tell people who you are.” Jerry Zhang, founder of a Beijing lifestyle marketing company, told CGTN. It’s not your gender that makes you different, but your personality (性格). Zhang added.
Clothing can be a good way to show your personality. Yao Qing, a 24-year-old in Hangzhou, is a big fan of sports like skateboarding and skiing. She often wears shirts and jeans. “I feel more myself that way,” Yao told China Daily.

The first two classes were held in the
Tianhe module.
A. B. C. D.
35.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.The sample of the thale cress. B.The scissors.
C.The picture of the thale cress. D.The voice-controlled camera.
36.What can we learn from the text
A.The third space class took place in the Tianhe module.
B.Astronauts can send pictures to scientists on Earth through a camera.
C.In space, the water drops are much smaller than those on Earth.
D.We will soon grow food on the moon and Mars.
37.Why did the writer write the passage
A.To show us how to sleep in space.

Luckily his father took me away at once, and angrily hit the boy hard on the head.
After eating, the farmer went back to his work in the fields. ________, because she put me on her bed and closed the door. I was very tired, and slept for two hours.

Two years ago, I was sitting in my car waiting in line for paying the toll (通行费). When I finally reached the toll station, the toll station worker told me that the person in front had paid for me and I was free to go. I was so shocked. I didn’t need to save the 5 dollars. I would never know who he was. I was tired of the heavy traffic and the long line, and that behavior was surprising and unbelievable, which really touched my heart. So I decided to pay for the next car waiting in line.
The first time I tried to pay forward the toll, I kept looking into my rear-view mirror (后视镜) to see who I’d be paying for. In the mirror, I saw a tired-looking taxi driver. And I felt satisfied that my money would be going to a good place. But before we got to the toll station, the taxi driver had suddenly changed his way and now there was someone else behind me. She looked upset and was gesturing (打手势) angrily in a conversation with her friend. I wasn’t willing to be paying for a woman like that and was certainly judging her by what I was seeing in the mirror. Anyway, I paid the toll for both of us and left.
Thirty seconds later I was surprised to hear a honk (汽车喇叭声). It was the woman and her friend waving at me from the other way! She looked cheerful and happy. She wasn’t what I thought she was like. This was a valuable lesson that I shouldn’t judge people so quickly. After all, I don’t know their stories.

But in fact, our bodies can tell time. They use light and temperature to do so. If we wake up too late, our bodies might feel stuck between sleep and being awake. That’s why sometimes we feel even more tired after oversleeping.

But there’s even more going on according to Canadian researchers, who’ve shown that our brains get a natural improvement when they’ve got company (陪伴).

It can notice small differences in
leaves, soil and weather.
C.It can tell which company made the power lines.

74.What’s the meaning of the underlined word wielded in Paragraph 3
A.Cut B.bought C.used D.broke
75.What’s the structure of the passage (P① = paragraph ①)
A. B. C. D.

A.Beautiful and clear. B.Sad and changeable.
C.Serious and unlucky. D.Optimistic and charming.

People think children should play sports. Sports are fun, and children stay healthy while playing with others. However, playing sports can have negative influence on children. It may produce feelings of poor self-pride or
aggressive (攻击性的) behavior in some children. According to research on kids and sports, 40 million kids play sports in the US. Of these, 18 million say they have been shouted at or called names while playing sports. This leaves many children with a bad impression of sports.
Many researchers believe adults, especially parents and coaches, are the main cause of too much aggression in children’s sports. They believe children copy aggressive adult behavior. Parents and coaches are powerful teachers because children usually look up to them. Often these adults behave aggressively themselves, sending children the message that winning is everything. At children’s sporting events, parents may shout at other players or cheer when their child behaves aggressively. As well, children may be taught that hurting other players is acceptable, or they may be pushed to continue playing even when they are injured. Children watch adult sports games and see violent behavior replayed over and over on television.
As a society, we really need to face up to this problem and find out the causes behind them. Parents and coaches should act as better examples for children. They also need to teach children better values. They should teach children to enjoy themselves whether they win or not. Winning is not everything. In addition, children should not be allowed to continue to play when they are injured. Sending a child with an injury into a game gives the child the message that health is not as important as winning. If we make some basic changes, children might learn to enjoy sports again.
84.How many children said they had some negative experience when playing sports
A.All of the children. B.More than half of the children.
C.Less than half of the children. D.About ten percent of the children.
85.What does the writer suggest

Companies these days spend thousands of dollars on their computer security. They buy the best firewalls and computer programs. However, Kevin Mitnick thinks the biggest danger these days is not a weakness in technology.
In the 1990s, Kevin Mitnick was an infamous hacker (黑客). He hacked into government and corporate computer systems. After being punished and sent into prison, Mitnick decided to use his skills in a different way. He started his own computer security firm. He now advises people on how to keep their computers safe.
According to Mitnick, the biggest danger to security is people. However, by this he doesn’t mean hackers. In fact, he means the people using the programs. “If an attacker can get one trusting person to give his or her information, the attacker gets in. All that money spent is basically wasted.” A hacker can get around everything with just one person within the company.
Unfortunately, people are still too trusting. In a recent test of the US tax office (the IRS), security experts called 100 managers. They posed as IRS computer technicians. The experts were able to fool 35 of the managers. They gave both their passwords and IDs. In the hands of real hackers, this would have been a disaster!
88.What is the main idea of this reading
A.Managers need to be more careful about who they talk to.
B.Technology is not helpful if people aren’t careful.
C.Hackers can help us make our computers safe.

Music festivals are a big part of British youth culture. Glastonbury Festival, also called Glastonbury or Glasto, is one of the largest outdoor music and performing arts festivals in the world, and all the most popular music artists play there.
The festival takes place at Worthy Farm in southwest England. It was Michael Eavis and his daughter Emily Eavis, local farmers and owners of Worthy Farm, who organized (组织) this huge event. The festival was first hosted in 1970 and had only 1,500 visitors at that time. Since then, it has been held almost every year at Worthy Farm in southwest England and has attracted more and more people every year.
The festival is held over three or four days in the open air. That means performers and audience (观众) must either live in tents or in caravans. Also, the fine weather is especially important. For some people, they will hardly sleep for 3 days so they can listen to all their favorite or new bands! The festival is quite funny because it is often very rainy in England, and sometimes thousands of people will wear wellington boots (威灵顿长筒靴) and even dance in the rain!
Glasto is still growing with varied kinds of music at the festival, such as rock, dance, world music, folk music and hip hop. It has grown into a huge event that attracts many of the world's top musical acts, including singers, dancers, comedians, circus acts and so on. All of the performers prepare very well before the festival to “strut their stuff” on over 80 stages, so that they can attract more people.
Today, tons of people who visit the Glastonbury Festival do so for the music, art, and dances. Visitors have a lot of fun enjoying the festival and many excellent performances. It is amazing that tickets for the festival always sell out within an hour or two of going on sale each year!

The earth is now covered by space junk after nearly 70 years of space exploration. An accident in 2023 made the clean-up more difficult to start.
According to the European Space Agency (ESA), scientists plan on testing their “junk truck”, ClearSpace-1, in 2025. It’s a spacecraft with four arms that can catch debris (碎片) and bring it back to the earth. One of its tasks is to bring back VESPA, a 113-kilogram, two-metre-wide rocket part.
But it was hit by another piece of space junk in August 2023, creating new pieces. The ESA is now changing its clean-up plan. “We must … reduce the creation of new space debris and begin to actively reduce the influence on other objects,” said the agency.
Most satellites today are sent into the earth’s low orbit (轨道), which reach up to around 2,000 kilometres above the earth. There, spacecraft are most likely to hit each other. There may be as many as 170,000,000 pieces of space junk in orbit, according to the ESA.Big or small, any of the pieces can cause harm to a spacecraft. For example, if an object as large as 10 centimetres hits a satellite, the satellite will break apart.
____▲____ One popular plan is to send a spacecraft carrying harpoons (鱼叉) and magnets (磁铁). The craft would shoot the harpoon to stick into the debris before “throwing” it back to the earth. Magnets could move the
debris, changing its direction. The debris would burn after entering the earth’s atmosphere (大气层) so there wouldn’t be much left when it reaches the earth. Scientists are also considering shooting lasers (激光) from the spacecraft to heat up the debris surface, creating a small push that would change the debris’ orbit. This change would allow the debris to be caught by the earth’s gravity.
Space junk can be very dangerous, and space agencies around the world are testing and planning the clean-up. But why haven’t they done anything yet One reason is the high cost. But they will still keep on testing the cheap and fine clean-up.
99.What is the main purpose of ClearSpace-1
A.To test the junk truck in orbit.
B.To bring VESPA back to the earth.
C.To avoid the accidents in space.
D.To clean up the debris from the earth’s orbit.
100.Why is the ESA changing its cleaning plan now
A.Because it was hit by a satellite.
B.Because it discovered more debris in orbit.
C.Because it will create new space junk.
D.Because more satellites are sent into the earth.
101.Which of the following can be put in “____▲____” in Paragraph 5
A.As for the clean-up, scientists have some other ideas.
B.It is too difficult to clean up all of the space debris.
C.Scientists are trying hard to create more useful spacecraft.
D.Scientists have met many difficulties in cleaning up the debris.
102.What can we infer from the passage
A.The lasers from the spacecraft are to burn the debris.
B.Space debris is dangerous and harmful to astronauts.
C.Scientists have been doing research to clean up the space debris.
D.The high cost of space cleaning will stop scientists from testing.

Beth received a piano as a gift from her neighbour Mr. Laurence. It had belonged to his late granddaughter.
Beth liked it very much and tried it. Her sisters said it was the greatest piano they had ever heard.
“You’ll have to go and thank him,” said Jo, Beth’s elder sister.
Yes, I mean to. I guess I’ll go now before I get frightened thinking about it.
Though Beth was shy, she also decided to show her gratitude. To her whole family’s surprise, Beth walked towards Mr. Laurence’s house.
“Mr. Laurence became cross (易怒的) after his granddaughter died. Beth is such a shy girl; how dare she talk with him ” cried Hannah, her mum, staring after her, while the girls became quite speechless by the miracle (奇迹) they saw later.
Beth knocked at the door before she gave herself time to think. A gruff voice called out, “Come in!” She did go in, right up to Mr. Laurence, saying in her low voice, “I came to thank you sir, for…” But she didn’t finish, for Mr. Laurence looked so friendly that she forgot her speech, only remembering that he had lost the little girl he loved. After a while, she put her arms round his neck and kissed him.
