There are places in North America where great cities once stood. There were gardens, trees and grass. But now these places are like deserts. Scientists began to study this land to find out what had happened. Many of them believe the land died when the trees were cut down.
Trees help other plants grow. Tree roots (树根) hold the soil in place. They keep the wind from blowing away the soil. Leaves on the ground keep rainwater from running off. Trees near
farms can help to stop strong winds.
Once there were hundreds of farms in the northwest of the US. Then the farms turned into fields of dry land. This was because few trees grow there.
Now we try to save trees. In many places, when a tree is cut down, a new tree is planted in its place. We don’t want the land to die.

Do you know why different animals or pests (害虫) have their special colors Colors in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts (蝗虫). But birds cannot easily catch them. Why It is because locusts change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color as crops have. Some other pests with different colors from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of coloring is protecting themselves. Bears, tigers and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be seen by hunters.
This is because they have the colors much like the trees.
Have you ever noticed an even stranger act An octopus (章鱼) can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over, the enemies cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it isn’t strong at all.

On my recent trip to Sydney with my parents, we visited the Wildlife Park.
The Wildlife Park has lots of different animals and birds. Some are native (当地的) toAustralia and can only be found there. There are over 600 animals there, including kangaroos, koalas and crocodiles (鳄鱼). They are kept in their natural environment. I like the
Wildlife Park better than a zoo where most of the animals are in cages (笼子).
We first spent some time with the kangaroos. We were allowed to touch and feed them. It was very exciting to be so close to them. There were koalas there too. They looked very cuddly (令人想拥抱的). Although we were not allowed to carry them, I got to take a photo with one. It is a wonderful souvenir (纪念品) of my holiday in Sydney.
The Wildlife Park has plenty of freshwater and saltwater crocodiles. Some of them arereally big and scary (吓人的) with huge teeth! I did not want to get too close to them.
There was also a bird show. The keepers showed us different species (种类) they had. I saw an old parrot which could “talk”. It made a great impression on me.

Once there were many thousands of Gourma Desert (沙漠) elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred.
Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly On the one hand, the elephants’
main lake, their only water source (来源), dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans.
To protect the elephants’ living environment, the Mali Elephant Project (MEP) was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland.
However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching (偷猎) and illegal trade in the elephants increased rapidly. Eighty-three elephants were lost in 2015 alone, and another fifty-one elephant were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,” said a member of MEP.
Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations (组织) have joined together to educate the local people that trading elephants is against the law. People already know a lot about animals. However, there are still some things about
animals that may surprise you. Here are some facts about animals you probably didn’t know.
Cows do have best friends and feel stressed when they are separated. Scientists have found that cows are very social animals and a cow always makes friends with other cows. When a cow is with its friends, it feels relaxed, compared with when it is alone.
During breeding season, a male penguin (企鹅) will offer a small stone to a female penguin as a gift. If she takes it, they will become partners. When the female penguin lays an egg, she and her partner may carry it on their feet, because some penguins don’t build nests (鸟巢).
Crocodiles (鳄鱼) swallow (吞) stones. Crocodiles always swallow their food instead of eating it like other animals. They swallow stones which break the food into very small pieces in their stomachs. These stones may stay in their stomachs all their lives.
Elephants use plants to treat pain or other illness. Scientists once found a pregnant (怀孕的) elephant in Africa who ate a kind of plant which was not part of her normal food. Four days later, she gave birth to a baby elephant. The same plant was used by the local pregnant women.

Green Home campaigners (发起者) really love the nature world. In fact, we love it so much that we’re determined (决心) to do our best to protect it. 46 For that, we need money too. GreenHome can be strong only with the support from people like you. 47

48 So take action right now! Even a very small amount, like $1 a month, will soon build up into a valuable contribution (贡献) to protecting the natural world we love so much. 49 We’ll also use it to develop ways to deal with environmental problems.
Think about it in another way. If you want a future where you can continue to do the things
you love in the great outdoors, you need to make sure you’ve got a great outdoors to do them in. 50 And this way is simple enough—that’s got to be worth $1 a month.

B.But determination alone will not protect the environment.

The giant panda is one of the most popular animals in the world. A giant panda can grow up to 1.5 meters tall and weigh up to 160kg. People think the giant panda is very lovely. ①So it is not surprising that the World Wide Fund for Nature chose the giant panda as its symbol. The WWF tells people about animals that are in danger and raises money to save them.
The giant panda only lives in the wild in China. In the early 1980s, there were only 1,000 left in the wild. The main reason why pandas are endangered is that the area where panda can live has become smaller.
The WWF works to help giant pandas in the wild in many ways. One of the ways is to increase the size of panda reserves(自然保护区). Some reserves need to be joined together by planting bamboo between them to make “corridors”. These are paths that lead from one reserve to another. No one may harm the pandas in these areas. The corridors let pandas move from one habitat(栖息地)to another to look for food. ②People are working very hard to make sure the giant panda does not die out.
