It was raining like nothing before when Ehdaa Bujeldain, an English teacher living with her family in the mountains of Derna in eastern Libya, heard a loud noise that sounded like an explosion. Later they learned that a dam in Derna had broken down under the pressure of running water. For the next four days, they had no power or internet, and it was only recently that they have started to fully understand the damage caused by the floods.
“Half of the city has been destroyed. My mom’s relatives, my friends, my coworkers — they are all gone. Now we, the survivors, are just ghosts in shells,” says Bujeldain, whose sadness can be easily told from her blank expression.
Five days have passed since the terrible flooding in Derna. Libya’s Red Crescent organization estimated that 11,300 people have died, while the city’s mayor believes the number of deaths could be as high as 20,000.
Derna is a coastal city with a seasonal river called the Wadi Derna. Though it rained unusually heavily, people living near the river had little warning before the floodwaters came rushing in on that terrible morning. United Nations aid chief Martin Griffiths described the scale of the flood as “appalling” (令人惊骇的) and blamed the flood partly on sudden climate change.
Now international aid teams are arriving in Derna, but they face challenges due to damaged roads, and lack of access to power, water, and fuel. Tarhoni, doctor of the rescue team, warns that the most difficult weeks lie ahead. “One disaster is done and there is another to come,” he says. “There are thousands of people who lost everything now needing comfort. They need company, and they need psychological support.”
29. What do we know about Bujeldain’s family from paragraph 1
A. The explosion they heard led to the destruction of the dam.
B. Bujeldain saved her family from the floods with her bravery.
C. Bujeldain immediately recognized the outbreak of the floods.
D. For days, they didn’t fully realize the seriousness of the floods.
30. What does Bujeldain mean by saying they are “just ghosts in shells” in paragraph 2
A. They run out of energy and are very tired.
B. They feel lucky as they are safe and sound.
C. They are completely saddened and shocked.
D. They are sorry for the loss of their homeland.
31. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the cause of the loss of lives
A. The absence of warning. B. The damage to environment.
C. Unexpected climate change. D. The extraordinary rainfall.
32. What might be the main focus of international aid efforts in Derna
A. Dealing with mental problems. B. Providing immediate medical care.
C. Conducting climate change research. D. Rebuilding roads and access to resources.

Chinese Teapot Escaping from British Museum Goes Viral
Chinese state media has praised a viral video series, Escape from the British Museum, which tells the story of a jade teapot coming to life and escaping from the British Museum to make its way back home.
In the video series released online on Sept 5th, a female vlogger plays the role of an ancient Chinese jade teapot, while her male partner acts as a journalist who helps it return to China.
The plot line taps into growing criticism of the British Museum after reports last month that more than 1,500 priceless objects, including gold jewelry, gems and glass items, were missing, stolen or damaged, which made headlines around the world. Also, the jade teapot’s reaction reflected the “casual attitude of the British Museum toward Chinese cultural relics, as many of them are crammed into just one cabinet for exhibition”. Problems in the management and security of cultural objects in the British Museum exposed have led to the doubts about a long-standing and widely-spread claim that foreign cultural objects are better protected in the British Museum.
The video series stirred up the emotions of Chinese people after first being released by independent vloggers on Douyin by showing how the teapot experienced the happiness of returning to China to see pandas and watch a flag-raising ceremony on Tiananmen Square. Many netizens expressed their eagerness for cultural artifacts overseas to return home with dignity and honor.
In August the state media Global Times also called for the return of Chinese artifacts from the museum “free of charge” in the wake of the controversy. It strongly supported the video series for touching on a “powerful message” about the importance of cultural heritage and reflecting “Chinese people’s strong and emotional desire for the repatriation of the Chinese cultural relics”.
State broadcaster CCTV gave the short films a glowing review saying “We are very pleased to see Chinese young people are passionate about history and tradition. We are also looking forward to the early return of Chinese artifacts that have been displaced overseas.”
What is the writing purpose of paragraph 3
To discuss the problem in management.
To introduce the content of the video series.
To express criticism to the British Museum.
To provide background of the video series.
34. What does the underlined word “repatriation” (Para. 5) probably mean
A. Return. B. Reserve C. Repair D. Reflection.
35. What can we learn about the video series from the text
A. Chinese netizens expressed anger towards it.
B. The Chinese media showed appreciation for it.
C. The British Museum took it quite seriously.
D. The viewers were eager to learn history from it.
Where may the text be taken from
A. A guidebook. B. A story book.
C. A news report. D. A book review.

Video conferencing has been around for more than 20 years. Until the COVID-19 pandemic, though, you would find that many people needing to attend a meeting remotely would be called from a real conference room full of their teammates. Today, we’re regularly holding video conferences that are 100% virtual, that is, entirely carried out online. And this is creating a problem that technology can’t fix.
The problem is us, who haven’t evolved (进化) socially to the point where we can deal with much separation. So much of our well-being and work productivity is decided on how close we are physically. The removal of that for any period of time can be severely damaging. One surprising destructive effect of social distancing is laughter.
Normally people laugh about 18 times per day. And 97% of that time we’re laughing with others — we are 30 times more likely to laugh with others than to laugh alone. Think about it: how often when you and your friends laugh at something that is actually funny Research shows that 80% of what people laugh at is really not that funny.
So why do people laugh They laugh in order to laugh with others. Just as everyone starts yawning (打哈欠) when just one person yawns, most people can’t help but laugh when those around them do. This is why TV comedy shows often use prerecorded laugh tracks.
Laughing in response to other people’s laughing is not just a behavioral phenomenon. When we laugh, our body produces two key chemicals: endorphin which helps relieve pain and sets off feelings of pleasure, and dopamine which can improve learning, motivation and attention. In fact, studies show that people can stand 15% more pain simply by laughing for a few minutes beforehand. Laughter is also related to higher motivation and productivity at work.
In today’s home-alone, virtual-team world, this is exactly what you as a team leader should be doing: for your team members to stay healthy and productive, you need to get them to laugh more and stress less.
37. What is the problem mentioned in the first two paragraphs
A. A distant relationship. B. Unexpected social evolution.
C. Decreased laughter. D. Removed social distance.
38. What can be inferred from the article
A. Laughing alone is normal. B. Laughing is for fun.
C. Laughing starts with yawning. D. Laughing comes more in groups.
39. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The mechanism of laughter. B. The benefits of laughter.
C. The motivation behind laughter. D. The chemicals regarding laughter.
40. What would the author most probably discuss next
A. How to increase laughter. B. How to better a team.
C. How to reduce stress. D. How to promote productivity.

Learning a language doesn’t happen in a day. 41 To get to the point when you can communicate with native speakers, you should pay attention to the following top tips given by successful language learners.
Study a little bit every day but efficiently
When you organize to learn a lot of vocabulary or study several grammar patterns that are pretty challenging, your mind can’t take all of them simultaneously (同时地). Therefore, it is better to start with little steps and learn a little bit every day. It is often more efficient to learn 10 new words every day instead of learning 100 new words in a day. 42
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes
No one likes making mistakes. It affects your confidence and you are embarrassed especially if there are more people around you. But when you learn a foreign language, making mistakes is something quite normal and expected. If you make mistakes, it isn’t the end of the world. Try to learn from your mistakes. 43 Look at them as a learning tool that helps you never make those mistakes again.
Track Your Progress
Checking weekly or monthly progress against your language goals is highly-recommended. You might track the sentence structures learned, the phrases memorized, or the lectures followed. Realizing your progress can help you see how much your efforts pay off. 44 This strategy will keep you motivated to continue learning.
45 You, just like them, one day can be proud of yourself and your achievements in language learning.
A. Make them useful experience.
B. Try hard, and you will finally succeed.
C. It takes a lot of time, organization, and effort.
D. You won’t remember all those words, after all.
E. So you will find fun like other advanced learners.
F. You can also treat yourself with a small gift when you reach a new level.
G. The previous tips are from successful language learners who gladly shared them with you.

In order to enrich students’ school life and arouse their interest in learning English, an English dubbing competition intended for Senior One students at our school was held in the school lecture hall on November 16th.
The competition, with 9 teams from different classes, was a result of months of hard work and devotion by students. Under the guidance of teachers, each team selected a 3-minute video clip from famous films, where they showcased their English proficiency and dubbing talents. What won the loudest applause was the show of a dubber from Class 6, who could play multiple roles all by himself. Lastly, Team 1 and Team 4 left the deepest impression on everyone with their outstanding performances and were therefore awarded first prizes and great applause.
Participants expressed their excitement and amazement, saying that not only did the event serve as a platform for students to display their dubbing skills but an opportunity for them to cultivate language skills and cultural appreciation.

M: What about exercise Have you been able to get any exercise during midterm exams
W: No, I've been studying so much that I haven't had time.

M: My family left Budapest in 1986, and settled in Canada where a lot of my friends’ parents were highly successful businessman. It seemed so cool, so in high school I started a web designed company, and learned a lot from that experience.

W: Thank you for your cooperation.
听下面一段独白,回答第8-10题
It may seem strange that it should be like this, but when you have an interview, your education, knowledge, and experience may be less important than the impression you make on the people interviewing you.
Do you know what 90 percent of the interviewees never remember to do when they go into the interview room The answer is smile. So make eye contact and smile as soon as you enter the room, but follow the interviewers’ lead on whether or not to shake hands. Wait to be told where to sit, and don't use first names unless the interviewer expects you to.
Believe it or not, the colors you choose to wear may also contribute to the impression you make. Color analysts tell us that people wearing red show that they have confidence, while wearing yellow shows openness. If you choose to wear orange, this tells people that you're happy. A navy blue suit isn't bad for an important job interview because this color suggests that you're trustworthy. If it seems a bit dull, then add something in another color, perhaps a tie, or a scarf. Purple is a good choice for this.
When the interview was over remember that people from the company may still be evaluating you even after you have left the interview room. So don't forget to say goodbye to the receptionist or anyone else you spoke to when you arrived. Ignoring someone might cost you the job you've tried so hard to get.

A 15 year old boy was seriously injured in a car accident, after he was hit by a car at 2:30 this afternoon. He was crossing the street then. Suddenly a car appeared and hit him. The boy was thrown ten feet away from where he was walking. The driver didn't stop his car, but ran away. Luckily, some people walking by called 911, and the boy was taken to the hospital in about 10 minutes. The boy was now out of danger, but he was so seriously injured that he might be unable to walk again. According to the people on the spot, the driver of the car was a man with long hair in his forties. He was wearing a pair of brown sunglasses.
