In the last two weeks, the only things that have been thrown by Esther Penarrubia have been a broken toy, an old T-shirt used to clean shoes, a balloon from a party and the backing from a sheet of stickers. Ms Penarrubia, who has a PhD in agricultural engineering, realized that her lifestyle was called “zero waste” after watching a TED talk in November 2015.
It was when Ms Penarrubia moved house that she decided to remove single-use plastic from her life to reduce her family’s waste and thus changed her lifestyle.
Bulk (批量) buying, reusing old materials, searching second-hand shops and minimizing products which use plastic have been the key factor to her lifestyle, which sees her family send just one piece of rubbish to landfill every fortnight. Ms Penarrubia tries to remove all plastic products but if she does purchase any, like olive oil, she will bulk buy in a five-litre bottle and will recycle when finished. This also applies to cleaning products. Glass jars and containers are repurposed after use and kitchen leftovers go in the compost (堆肥) bin. The family grow their own tomatoes, cabbages, broccoli and herbs at home and also have orange and apple trees, while she buys fresh fruit, vegetables and bread in bulk from local suppliers for the week.
Ms Penarrubia believes changing to a zero-waste lifestyle is easier and cheaper than per-ceived, but admits the challenging part in convincing others that it can be achievable. She said, “If you think and organize your buying habits, consume less things from better quality, choose reusable alternatives, buy everything you can in quantity from the second-hand market—then it’s not more expensive and you can save money. “Zero waste” culture doesn’t only consist of the reduction of our waste, it involves a more conscious lifestyle and way of consumption.
4. What has Esther thrown during the past two weeks?
A. A balloon and an old T-shirt.
B. A broken toy and a pair of shoes.
C. An old T-shirt and some stickers.
D. A balloon and some glass containers.
5. When did Esther begin to live a zero waste life?
A. Two weeks ago.
B. After watching a TED talk.
C. When moving into the new home.
D. After running a second-hand shop.
6. How did Esther live a lifestyle of zero waste?
A. By eating less.
B. By running a second-hand shop.
C. By recycling and shopping smartly.
D. By making all the daily goods by herself.
7. What does Esther think of practicing the zero waste?
A. It’s too expensive. B. It’s within easy reach.
C. It’s unlikely to work. D. It’s much more demanding.

The legal age to drive a car in the United States is 16. Getting a driver’s license on the day you turn 16 has long been a major life event for many young people in America.
But interest in driving among today’s teenagers has dropped sharply over the past 35 years. In 1983, 80 percent of 18-year-olds in America had a driver’s license — the document that permits a person to drive a motor vehicle. By 2018, that number had dropped to 61 percent. Among 16-year-olds, the number decreased from 46 percent in 1983 to 25 percent in 2018.
Young people say they have many reasons for delaying or avoiding getting a driver’s license. Some choose more environmentally friendly transportation choices. Others find driving to be stressful. And some simply do not care about cars at all.
Carmakers want to make their vehicles more attractive to young people. They seek to make cars more interesting to a generation raised on technology.
Mark Rushbrook is global director of Ford Performance Motorsports. “A big screen” is what today’s teen drivers want he said. “I think what is important to them is staying connected in a safe way,” Rushbrook said. “The vehicle is an extension (延伸) of their iPhone or their screen device, they want to stay connected and bring their music and everything else with them into the car.”
Mark Reuss is president of General Motors. He said he believes there is still a market for young people who care about more than just their music and connectivity “You still have to deliver connectivity in something people love to look at and be seen in.” he said. “That generation has not been lost. They still want a great looking car...” He added, “There’s lots of different ways to make cars appealing and that doesn’t go away.”
8. How is paragraph 2 developed
A. By giving examples. B. By following the time line.
C. By giving reasons. D. By making comparisons.
9. Which can be a reason for young people avoiding getting driving licenses
A. Feeling anxious when driving. B. Lacking a sense of direction.
C. Not caring about the environment. D. Hating public transportation.
10. What can be inferred from Rushbrook’s words
A. Smarter cars will attract teens more.
B. Cars with iPhones are being expected.
C. Music connectivity is the most important for teens.
D. The car screen will be bigger and bigger.
11. How does Mark Reuss say about young people
A They are not the biggest customers. B. They prefer to drive in different ways.
C. They still want good-looking vehicles. D. They will never change their driving taste.
D
Movies about the future often show people travelling around in flying cars. Last Tuesday that vision came a step closer to reality for a Japanese company called SkyDrive, as it showed off its new flying car, the SD-03, in action. The small car flew around for four minutes, staying about 1-2 meters off the ground.
The SD-03 is powered by batteries and has 8 motors, which lift it straight off the ground. What made this test flight special was that a pilot was on board. Toraohiro Fukuzawa, who leads SkyDrive, said, “Of the world’s over 100 flying car projects, only a handful have succeeded with a person on board.”
Many groups worldwide are working to develop flying cars. Some governments, including Japan’s, are supporting the idea, hoping that in the future, flying cars will be useful for short trips like taxi rides in cities. Flying cars could also help reach places that can’t be reached by road.
What happens when a motor fails If flying cars are crossing a city, an accident could hurt not just people in the car, but people on the ground, too. That’s why the SD-03 has eight motors—as backups.
Some people believe flying cars reduce traffic jams. But new systems will be needed to help control traffic in the air. With many cars flying around, these systems would be too complicated to be managed in real time by humans. Besides, flying cars are expensive. When it’s ready, SkyDrive’s flying car is expected to sell for between $300,000 and $500,000.
However, people who believe in flying cars point out that cars and airplanes faced challenges at first, too. With time, many of the big problems were solved. By 2050, Mr. Fukuzawa hopes people will be able to fly anywhere inside Tokyo in just 10 minutes. “I think flying cars will become normal in the near future.” he says.
12. What was special about this test flight
A. The car flew higher. B. The car was cheap.
C. The car flew on its own. D. The car carried a driver.
13. Why is the SD-03 equipped with eight motors
A. To ensure its safety. B. To increase its flying speed.
C. To make it look cool. D. To enable it to carry more weight.
14. Which aspect of the flying cars is mainly discussed in paragraph 5
A. Their design. B. Their application.
C. Their cost. D. Their disadvantages.
15. What is Mr. Fukuzawa’s opinion about flying cars
A. They can be easily bought. B. They have a long way to go.
C. They have a promising future. D. They are environmentally friendly.

A Surprise Job
Tiegan always liked to sing. Her earliest memories all have songs in them. Tiegan liked to sing in the bath tub when she was getting ready for bed, and she liked to sing in the morning while she walked to school.
Sometimes, though, Tiegan’s family liked the house to be quiet. Mom liked to solve crossword puzzles, and Dad liked to watch the news on TV each night. “It’s quiet time, Tiegan,” they would say. Then Tiegan had to find something else to do. She had plenty of puzzles and games, but she didn’t like them as much as singing.
One summer day, Tiegan was singing her favorite songs in the living room, Dad came downstairs and said, “Tiegan, I have a headache. Can you go outside and play I really need it to be quiet so I can take a nap.”
Tiegan sighed and went outside. It was a sunny day, and many people were outside riding bikes and walking their dogs. She sat on the roadside and looked around. Then she started to hum(哼歌). She was careful to be quiet at first, but soon the humming turned to singing. “Dad probably can’t hear me anyway,” she thought, ”so it’s probably okay to sing outside.“
The sun was very warm, and Tiegan took off her baseball cap. Now she could feel a cool breeze across her forehead, which felt nice. She dropped her hat on the sidewalk and kept singing.
Just as Tiegan finished one of her favorite songs, a man with a small dog stopped in front of her. ”That was a beautiful song," he said. And he dropped a dollar into her hat. Before Tiegan could say anything, the man walked away with his dogs.
Tiegan wasn’t sure what to do with the dollar, but she did want to keep singing. As she started her next song, their neighbor Mrs. Maudslay came out of her house and looked over the fence.

Movies about the future often show people travelling around in flying cars. Last Tuesday, that vision came a step closer to reality for a Japanese company called SkyDrive, as it showed off its new flying car, the SD-03, in action.
D 13. A 14. D 15. C

根据第四段“What happens when a motor fails If flying cars are crossing a city, an accident could hurt not just people in the car, but people on the ground, too. That’s why the SD-03 has eight motors—as backups.(当电机发生故障时会发生什么?如果飞行汽车穿过城市,事故不仅会伤害车里的人,还会伤害地面上的人。这就是为什么SD-03有8个引擎作为备份。)”所以,SD-03有8个引擎是为了保障不发生因引擎失败而导致的意外事故。故选A项。
根据第五段“But new systems will be needed to help control traffic in the air... Besides, flying cars are expensive.”
根据最后一段“By 2050, Mr. Fukuzawa hopes people will be able to fly anywhere inside Tokyo in just 10 minutes. “I think flying cars will become normal in the near future.” he says.”

根据后文“That is, you need to go to bed earlier and get up earlier. Start off by going to bed 15 minutes before your usual turn-in time and setting your alarm the same number of minutes earlier the next day. Gradually reset your sleep cycle until you get to your desired wake-up time.(也就是说,你需要早睡早起。从比平时提前15分钟上床睡觉开始,第二天也把闹钟提前15分钟。逐渐重置你的睡眠周期,直到你达到你想要的起床时间)”可知,后文提到了改掉坏习惯的两件事情,故B选项“实际上它涉及两件事”符合语境,故选B。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Before you even open your eyes, stretch every extremity for 15 seconds. Lift your arm and begin by stretching each fingers, next your hand, and then your arm.(在你睁开眼睛之前,伸展四肢15秒。抬起你的手臂,伸展每一个手指,接着是你的手,然后是你的手臂)”以及后文“End with a neck and back stretch that gets you out of bed. By doing this, you will increase the flow of blood through your system, providing your tissues with extra oxygen.(最后伸展脖子和背部,让你起床。通过这样做,你会增加血液在你身体系统中的流动,为你的组织提供额外的氧气)”可知,上文提到要伸展四肢,且提到了伸展手臂,故本句是在说明伸展下肢,故C选项“继续练习你的脚趾、脚和腿”符合语境,故选C。
【18题详解】
根据后文“The fewer choices you have to make first thing, the better. Before going to bed, decide what you’re going to wear, work out which route you’ll take to work and pack your bag.(你首先要做的选择越少越好。在上床睡觉之前,决定好你要穿什么,确定好上班的路线,然后整理你的包)”可知,本段主要是关于决定第二天穿衣服的建议。故E选项“前一天晚上把衣服准备好”符合语境,故选E。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Hang a large whiteboard in your kitchen. On it, write down all you need to know for that particular day, from doctor appointments to what you’re doing with your friends. Check it carefully while you sip your first cup of coffee or tea.(在厨房里挂一块大白板。在上面写下当天你需要知道的所有事情,从看医生到和朋友在一起做什么。当你喝第一杯咖啡或茶时,仔细检查它)”可知,本句为本段最后一句,应承接上文说明在白板上写下事情的作用:帮助你安排你的一天。故D选项“它会帮助你安排你的一天”符合语境,故选D。
【20题详解】
根据后文“But if you can get yourself into the habit, exercising in the morning can give you energy to jump-start your day.(但是如果你能养成这样的习惯,早上锻炼可以给你能量开始新的一天)”可知,本句是在建议早期锻炼,G选项中jogging early对应后文中exercising in the morning。

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
“Are you busking(街头卖艺), Tiegan ” Mrs. Maudslay asked. “No. I’m just playing and singing,” answered Tiegan. “I think the man must have mistaken me as a street performer, because I have my hat out there. It is really funny.” Tiegan added. She hadn’t meant to start a new job, but since her hat was already out, she decided to keep singing. Soon enough, people walked past and stopped to listen. When they were ready to move on, they dropped some money into her hat.
By the end of the afternoon, Tiegan’s hat was full. Tiegan felt happy, because she not only got a lot of unexpected dollars, but also proved that her songs were recognized by people. Singing didn’t feel like work to her, but it was certainly a good way to earn money. It suddenly occurred to her that with this money, she could take Mom and Dad out for ice cream just as soon as Dad was feeling better. After all, her singing had disturbed the peace of their home for so long.
