In 1968 Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson set an intelligence test for a class of primary school children at "Oak School" (an invented name) in San Francisco. The teachers were told that the intelligence test bad two purposes. Firstly, it would measure the IQ of the children and secondly it would predict 20% of students who, no matter what their performance to date was like, would be likely to make the most progress during the next school year. The teachers were then told who the predicted top improvers would be.
At the end of the school year, eight months later, the intelligence test was carried out again and, perhaps not surprisingly, the results showed that the 20% of children who had been predicted to improve the most, did in fact do so. They showed, on average, an increase of 12 IQ points on the test, compared with an increase of only 8 points for the other children.
But the fact is that no results of any test were used to predict who would be the top performers. Instead, the lucky children who the teachers were told would be the top improvers were given this label as a matter of chance. This study shows that the label that you are given, and your interaction(互动) with others who notice that label, can have a big influence on the results that you achieve. This phenomenon(现象)has been called the Rosenthal effect. It is also known as the Pygmalion effect, related most famously to the George Bernard Show play Pygmalion , which shows the effect that two men have in changing an untidy flower girl into a well-spoken lady.
For ethical (道德的)reasons the researchers at "Oak School!" only concentrated on trying to produce positive results in the children's performance. However, it is worth asking yourself what the effects on 20% of students considered least likely to improve in the following school year might have been. A frightening thought.
4. What did the study find about the predicted top performers at the end of the school year
A. They showed more interest in tests. B. They really made the most progress.
C. They became less confident than before. D. They were as intelligent as the other children.
5. How were the top performers chosen
A. According to the teachers' judgement. B. Based on the test results.
C. By chance. D. Openly.
6. What can we infer about the 20% of students mentioned in the last paragraph
A. They might be willing to accept positive results.
B. They would likely have frightening thoughts.
C. They would likely make the least progress.
D. They might work much harder than before.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. The Rosenthal effect B. A play by Bernard Shaw.
C. A school in San Francisco. D. The labels given to children.
B 5. C 6. C 7. A

Over the next 20 years, we are going to send more and better robots to Mars. Those robots will send back better pictures, maps, samples, and weather reports. There is a limit to what robots can tell us, though, so eventually we will have to send people to study the planet. Before people can visit Mars, we need to invent a spaceship that can take us there. Mars is very far away. Depending on where Mars and Earth are in their orbits (轨道) around the sun, it could take between six months to a year to get there.
The moon is much closer, and we were there, 25 years ago. Over the next 10 years, we are going to work on building a new spacecraft that can go to the moon. Using this craft, we will practise the skills we need to go to Mars.
Once we get to the moon, we are going to build a station so that people can live and work on the moon for months at a time. This is important so that we have a place to start from when we want to visit Mars, but it is also important because it gives us practice with living away from Earth.
By the time you are old enough to be an astronaut, we will have people spending months on the moon. By the time you are old enough to be a commander of a space mission we will be taking trips to Mars. By the time your kids are old enough to be astronauts, we may have people living on Mars. Wouldn’t it be cool to get a postcard from someone who was building a house on Mars Wouldn’t it be cooler if it was you who sent the postcard
8. We eventually have to send people to Mars because_________.
A. the pictures that robots have sent back are not very clear
B. robots can’t tell us all we want to know
C. robots are controlled by us humans
D. the samples robots have sent back are not good enough
9. From the first paragraph we can see the distance between Earth and Mars________ .
A. is not always the same
B. is nearly the same
C. is unchangeable
D. never changes very much
10. A space station on the moon is important because________ .
A. people can learn to adapt to living on other planets
B. people can practise planting crops in it
C. the new spacecraft can only land in it
D. astronauts can practise skills they need to go to Mars
11. The author of the passage________.
A. thinks that trips to the moon are an unrealistic dream
B. encourages kids to be astronauts
C. hopes to receive a postcard from Mars
D. is sure people’s dream of living on Mars will come true
B 9. A 10. A 11. D

The situation of the world’s plants is not good. One fifth of the kinds of plants are in danger of disappearing, according to a report.
“Plants are very vital to human beings,” said Kathy Willis, who led the new report. “Plants provide us with everything—food, fuel, and medicine, and they are very important for our climate controlling. Without plants we would not be here.”
The good news is that deforestation rates around the world have dropped largely since the 1950s. However, this report on the health of plants around the world shows that there is much more to be done.
The report predicts that there are now 390,900 kinds of plants. And about 21 percent of those plants are in danger of disappearing. “The good side is that we’re still discovering lots of new plants, about 2,000 each year,” said Dr. Willis. “The bad side is that we’ve seen a huge change in land cover, mainly caused by cultural activity, with a little bit of climate change in there as well.”
Human activity has a great effect on the danger of plants disappearing. As humans cut down forests to make room for agriculture, towns and cities, biodiversity is lost. This could not only affect our own food supply directly, but also affect the food web.
12. What does the underlined word “vital” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Useless. B. Friendly. C. Equal. D. Important.
13. Which of the following does Dr. Willis agree with
A. New plants are more than ever before. B. About half the plants will disappear soon.
C. Many new plants are found every year. D. Plants mustn’t be used to produce medicine.
14. What can we learn from the third paragraph
A. We have made little progress. B. There is a long way for us to go.
C. We have achieved our goal. D. There will be nothing we can do.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Biodiversity Being Lost B. Human Social Activity
C. Environment Protection D. Nature Climate Change
【答案】12 D 13. C 14. B 15. A

根据第三段中“However, this report on the health of plants around the world shows that there is much more to be done.(然而,这份关于世界各地植物健康状况的报告表明,还有很多工作要做)”可知,我们还有很长的路要走。
根据最后一段“Human activity has a great effect on the danger of plants disappearing. As humans cut down forests to make room for agriculture, and towns and cities, biodiversity is lost. This could not only affect our own food supply directly, but also it could affect the food web.(人类活动对植物消失的危险有很大的影响。当人类为了给农业和城镇腾出空间而砍伐森林时,生物多样性就消失了。这不仅会直接影响到我们的食物供应,还会影响到食物网)”结合文章主要讲述植物物种面临消失,植物对人类非常重要,植物所面临的险境会导致生物多样性丧失,这种变化最终将会危害到人类自身。可知A选项“生物多样性正在丧失”符合文章标题。故选A。

故填which。
根据后文“but also a record”可知,该空也是泛指,需要填不定冠词a/an,且artistic为元音音素开头。故填an。
根据“Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949”可知,后文需要用到现在完成时,every possible means与use是逻辑动宾关系,应用被动语态,主语是单数概念,助动词使用has。故填has been used。
故填to train。
固定搭配introduce sth. into sth. 引入……”。故填into。

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let's go and see!”
“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and he ran. Henry went straight home and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together. Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored (忽视) the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Everyday after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.
注意:
1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Robert was fast sinking.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Thus, Robert’s life was saved.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Robert was fast sinking. It seemed as if Robert would be drowned only with his hands sticking out of the water. Just at the moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the screams, Henry ran quickly to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He reached Robert just as he was sinking at the last moment. By great effort, and with too much danger to himself, he brought Robert back to the shore.
Thus, Robert’s life was saved. Robert and his new friends were ashamed at having called Henry a coward. They realized that Robert had true courage. And it was Henry who was the true friend worth making. They said sorry to Henry for their rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Henry forgave them happily. He and Robert were friends again and they went home together as usual. From this, Robert learned what true courage was: never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.

B They would likely have frightening thoughts.
C. They would likely make the least progress.
D. They might work much harder than before.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. The Rosenthal effect B. A play by Bernard Shaw.
C. A school in San Francisco. D. The labels given to children.
C
B encourages kids to be astronauts
C. hopes to receive a postcard from Mars
D. is sure people’s dream of living on Mars will come true
However this report on the health of plants around the world shows that there is much more to be done.
