25. Have your mom or grandma ever made embroidered(刺绣的)clothes for you People in the past often embroidered on handkerchiefs(手帕),bed covers and dresses. Girls would embroider on a sachet(香囊)as a gift for their lovers.
Shu embroidery comes from Sichuan. It is the oldest kind of embroidery in China. People began to make it during the Han Dynasty(206 BC-220 AD). They sold it to other countries along the South Silk Road.
Embroidery takes time. It might take as long as a whole day to finish just 10cm. By the 1970s, Sichuan had as many as 5,000 embroiderers. But since modern machines can make cheaper embroidery products today, fewer people are buying handmade Shu embroidery products. Young people aren't learning the skill. To protect this skill, Shu embroidery was added to China's intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产)list in 2006.
Meng Dezhi, a national-level inheritor(国家级传承人)of the skill, has been making Shu embroidery for 40 years. After her factory closed down in 2005, she didn't give up loving this form of art. So she decided to teach others to make Shu embroidery. The work is hard and the pay is low. Not many people want to learn it. But Meng wants to change that. She now teaches it in universities and communities.
Shu embroidery stands for(代表)thousands of years of Sichuan culture. We should try to save it.
(1) Where does Shu embroidery come from
(2) How many embroiderers did Sichuan have by the 1970s
(3) Are many people buying handmade Shu embroidery products today
(4) How long has Meng Dezhi been making Shu embroidery
(5) What does Shu embroidery stand for
26. Yuan Longping is a Chinese agricultural scientist and educator. He is known for developing the first hybrid rice(杂交水稻). He was born in Beijing in 1930. He loved playing the erhu, swimming and motorcycling. He graduated from the Southwest Agriculture College in 1953. Then he began teaching at an agriculture school in Anjiang, Hunan Province.
In 1960, a very serious food shortage happened in China. A large number of people died of hunger and illnesses. Yuan Longping could hardly fall asleep at night. He thought it was time for him to do something for his country and people. He decided to find a way to solve the problem. Since then, he had devoted himself to the research of a new kind of rice.
In 1964, Yuan found a natural hybrid rice plant by accident. It had more advantages than others. He worked very hard with other scientists on it for many years. In 1973, the first hybrid rice appeared. It yielded(出产)20% more than that of common rice. Chinese people solved the food problem by their own efforts.
But Yuan Longping didn't stop. He kept on his research. Now the "Super Rice" yields over 1,100 kilograms each mu. Chinese people have enough rice to eat, and hybrid rice has also brought good news to the people of many other countries all over the world.
By the achievements, Yuan Longping is called "The Father of Hybrid Rice".
(1) Was Yuan Longping born in Beijing or in Hunan ______
(2) When did Yuan Longping develop the first hybrid rice ______
(3) How many kilograms does the "Super Rice" yield each mu now ______
(4) Can hybrid rice help the peoples in other countries ______
(5) What is Yuan Longping called because of his achievements ______
27. A Pioneer for all People Though he was one of China's most famous scientists, Yuan Longping considered himself a farmer, because he worked the land to do his research.
Known as "Father of Hybrid Rice (杂交水稻)", Dr Yuan graduated from Southwest Agricultural (农业的)College in 1953. From then on, finding ways to grow more rice was his life goal. As a young man, he saw the great need for increasing the rice production. At that time, hunger was a serious problem in many parts of the countryside. Dr Yuan searched for a way to get more rice with the same size of the fields. In 1974, he became an agricultural pioneer in the world to grow rice that has high production and that is called super hybrid rice. In the 1980s, he went around the world and gave advice about growing rice to farmers in other countries. In 2004, he won the World Food Prize for his work.
Dr Yuan was quite satisfied with his life. He would much rather keep time for his hobbies. He enjoyed playing the violin, swimming and reading. Spending money on himself meant very little to him, so he gave millions of yuan to help some researchers with their research in farming.
Long ago Dr Yuan had a dream about rice plants as tall as sorghum (高粱). With his hard work, he grew the rice that could feed more people. President Xi Jinping praised him for his great contributions(贡献) to China's food safety and world corn development.
Answer the questions according to the passage. (必须使用完整语句作答)
(1) Why did Dr Yuan consider himself a farmer?______
(2) What is Dr Yuan known as? ______
(3) When did Dr Yuan win the World Food Prize? ______
(4) How did Dr Yuan help other researchers? ______

28. Rice is one of the most commonly eaten basic foods around the world. Buying it and cooking it is a daily matter. Yet for many, its presence has been a matter of life and death. It is a main food because it is easy to grow, besides low cost and convenience. A poor community in the developing world may find it difficult to bring in foreign fruits or raise cattle for meat, but it can almost certainly use the land it has in order to grow plenty of rice.
This was the great achievement of Yuan Longping, who passed away on May 22 this year. A great Chinese scientist, Yuan successfully developed what is known as "hybrid rice" which can produce up a 30% higher output. Yuan Longping was born in the year 1930, a time when China was very different. It was a nation, without modern industry, depending on the rice which they grew. The first few decades (十年) of his life were met with major social events, and a rapidly growing population that made food supply not last all the time. This experience left its mark on Yuan Longping, which made him focus on(关注)farming science and work on his research of hybrid rice.
His achievement would see the rice supply in China increasing from 56.9 million tons in 1950 to 194.7 million tons by 2017. By 1991, 20% of the world's rice output came from hybrid rice, even if only being planted in 10% of fields.
Always remember, human development begins first with the most basic and sample things, such as developing rice. We should be thankful for scientific thinkers like Yuan.

(2) What did Yuan develop successfully
(3) When was Yuan Longping born
(4) What made Yuan focus on farming science
(5) How many tons was the rice supply in China by 2017
29.
This year is the Year of "Niu" or the Ox. Many Chinese people believe it's a good year because they love the animal so much.
In Chinese culture, "laohuangniu" is a symbol of hard work and selflessness(无私), because it works hard but asks nothing for itself. People love the animal so much that they write poems about it and paint pictures of it.
But in the West, people have a different opinion about the animal. "Bullheaded"(固执的)people will not listen to advice. If someone behaves "like a bull in a china shop", people say he or she is clumsy when he or she should be more careful.
We hope that all the teenagers can work just as hard as the OX does. Avoid "a red flag to a bull"- something that may make you very angry. And we also hope that you will always "take the bull by the horns(不畏艰险)" when you run into difficult situations.
(1) Why is "laohuangniu" a symbol of hard work and selflessness?
(2) How do Chinese people express their love for "niu"
(3) Which word describes people who will not listen to advice

30. On May 22, 2021, people in China and around the world felt sad because China's "father of hybrid rice (杂交水稻)" Yuan Longping died.
Yuan worked as a teacher at an agriculture (农业)school in An Jiang, Hunan after graduation. Seeing many people die of hunger from 1959 to 1961, he decided to study hybrid rice.
Yuan spent four years looking for a wild rice strain (品牌) that could be crossed (杂交). In 1964, he found it!
Yuan put all his life into creating hybrid rice, which ended hunger for millions of people not only in China, but around the world. Hybrid rice is grown in 57 percent of China's rice fields. It is also grown in over 40 countries, including India, the US and Brazil.
In 2020, Yuan's team set a new world record in growing hybrid rice.
Yuan was not only a great scientist but also a talented man. He had many hobbies, such as volleyball, swimming and violin.
Though he has left, we will respect and remember him forever.
