When I was a kid, my siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I used to have ice cream for dessert. Every day, we would choose which ice cream flavor to have, whether to eat it in a cone or a bowl. Then we would happily wolf down our treat (款待) as fast as we could.
Once, though, when I was probably about 10 or 11, our grandpa came to visit us. Grandpa always had a unique view on things. On this particular occasion, my sister and I were making bets as to who could finish our ice cream first. With a smile, Grandpa said, “Why would you want to finish first If you eat slowly, it will last longer. You should have a competition to see who can finish last.” Even now, I always try to taste my ice cream, but of course this is about more than just dessert.
Too often, kids want to scramble (争夺) for more, whether it’s more ice cream, more toys, or more friends. This habit persists into our adult years, and we end up constantly scrambling for more. We never develop the skill of appreciating what we have. If we learn to recognize this pattern and change it, we can raise our kids a little differently, giving them the tool of tasting their widely known dessert, which could lead to a happier life for them.
What my grandpa taught me that day was really that if you take the opportunity to enjoy what’s in front of you, the pleasure will last longer and be more rewarding than if you rush through life always trying to get the next treat. It’s a lesson that, I think, has made my adult life happier, as well. These days, when I want something, I wait as long as I can before I allow myself to have it. Then, when I finally get it, I make sure to treasure it as long as possible, because I know that, no matter what it is, it will be gone all too soon.

European researchers say they have created a process that can produce oxygen from moon dust. The process could provide a major source of oxygen for humans taking part in moon exploration activities in the future.
Researchers from the European Space Agency, or ESA, carried out the experiments at a laboratory in the Netherlands. They reported their results in a study published in Planetary and Space Science.
The team says ESA’s experimental “plant” was able to successfully produce oxygen from simulated moon dust. The dust is part of a material known as regolith (月壤),a top layer of dirt and rock pieces that sit on the surface of the moon.
Samples of regolith from the moon have confirmed that the material contains about 45 percent oxygen by weight. However, the oxygen is chemically locked in the form of minerals or glass, so it is not easily available for use. Having real samples of regolith from the moon made it possible for the researchers to create the simulated moon dust material used during testing.
The oxygen extraction (提取)process is carried out using a method called molten salt electrolysis (熔盐电解). This involves first placing the regolith in a metal container. Calcium chloride salt is added to the mixture, which is then heated to 950 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, the regolith remains solid. Next, an electrical current is passed through the material. The researchers say it is this step that results in oxygen being extracted from the regolith. The study reported that up to 96 percent of oxygen in the simulated moon dust was extracted during the experiments.
ESA’s long-term goal is to design an oxygen -producing “pilot plant” to operate full-time on the moon. The first technology demonstration of the system is expected to take place in the middle of 2020s.
The researchers reported that “as a bonus”, the process also results in the production of usable metallic materials.
28. What can benefit from the process
A. The treatment of some patients. B. The environment of the moon.
C. Future moon exploration activities. D. Future experiment in the laboratory.
29. Why is oxygen in the regolith hard to use
A. It exists in the form of solid. B. It only exists on the surface.
C. It is mixed with other materials. D. It is locked in a metal container.
30. What step makes oxygen extracted from the regolith
A. Adding calcium chloride salt to the mixture.
B. Placing the regolith in a metal container.
C. Passing an electrical current through the material.
D. Heating the metal container to 950 degrees Celsius.
31. What does the underlined word “simulated” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean
A. Mixed. B. Copied. C. Exposed. D. Abandoned.

Going against the tide of flocking to well-known tourist destinations on vacation, a growing number of holidaymakers in China tend to spend their leisure time at lesser-known attractions. Reverse tourism (逆向旅游) has appeared as a new trend among young holidaymakers in China.
According to data from an online travel agency, the number of rooms booked at hotels in less-traveled cities during the holiday was up 30 percent year-on-year. Bookings for four-star or five-star hotels in less-traveled places all increased
ten times at a minimum. Some lesser-known scenic spots posted double-digit (两位数的) growth during the holiday. Baimaiquan Park in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, received 52,100 visits in the seven days, up to 15.78 percent year-over-year.
Besides crowds, some vacationers chose less-traveled places to save on the cost of trips to popular destinations. In addition, lesser-known attractions are not as “commercial” as developed ones and are able to offer more actual experiences and natural encounters.
Essentially speaking, total relaxation is becoming a real expectation for many people when they travel. Changes in demand may be the fundamental reason for the popularity of reverse tourism. COVID-19 is another key factor fueling reverse tourism. As preventive measures continue, traveling has an unpredictable quality. Travelers have thus become more cautious and tend to choose local attractions or places with fewer tourists.
“The rise of reverse tourism is not a bad thing,” said Zhengzhou Daily. It means that vacationers now have more options, which brings more possibilities to the tourism market. More importantly, it noted, the trend is set to force popular destinations to improve themselves instead of resting on their past honor.
Jiang Han, a senior researcher, said that reverse tourism will become one of the future directions for the market. To give a real boost to the tourism market, Jiang suggested that more efforts be made to tap the potential of underestimated, lesser-known destinations. It is necessary to dig deeper into the local customs and highlight the local characteristics to improve the quality of local tourism.
32. What do the statistics in paragraph 2 tell us
A. The popularity of travel agency in China.
B. The high income of hotels during holidays.
C. The contributions of tourism to the economy.
D. The increasing trend of reverse tourism in China.
33. What may be the root cause of the rise of reverse tourism
A. The impact of COVID-19.
B. Holidaymakers’ changing needs for travel.
C. The lower cost of heading to less-traveled places.
D. The lack of innovative improvements in famous attractions.
34. What does Zhengzhou Daily think of reverse tourism
A. It will drop with the recovery of economy.
B. It benefits both tourists and the tourism market.
C. It is beneficial to spread local culture to tourists.
D. It blocks the development of some popular resorts.
35. What is Jiang Han’s advice on developing the tourism market
A. Upgrading the supporting facilities in tourist areas.
B. Improving the management rules of tourist attractions further.
C. Exploring the potential and features of lesser-known attractions.
D. Promoting the local characteristics of China through online media.

It is believed that it’s dangerous to have plants in the bedroom. Plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and produce oxygen (氧气) in the day. 36 . The build-up of CO2 is a real problem for indoor air quality, which has been shown to influence health, so it is easy to see where the concern comes from. But to consider whether sharing our bedroom with our plants can harm health, we should consider three things.
Firstly, how much CO do plants produce at night compared with what they take in during the day 37 For the answer depends on everything from species to light levels and even room temperature.
Thankfully, in 2015, researchers at Turkey’s Kastamonu University found that large houseplants take in between six and eight times as much CO2 in the day as they produce at night.
38 A single human breath contains around 40, 000 ppm of CO2, more than 10 times the effect a plant could have in 8 hours, so you might want to throw your partner out before your plants.
Finally, we don’t live in the sealed (密封的) boxes in which these studies are carried out. 39 The air is even exchanged when we move around. According to one recent review, we need houseplants to keep indoor air fresh, and to fight some pollution. 40
Let’s enjoy houseplants whenever we like, because if sleeping near plants were bad for our health, camping in a forest would be deadly.
A. This is hard to answer.
B. So, they are quite necessary.
C. The question has more than one answer.
D. Besides, we often share a room with someone else.
E. Indoor air is being exchanged through doors and windows.
F. At night they compete with us for the air we breathe while asleep.
G. Secondly, compare the influence of a plant with that of a person sharing a room.

Looking over the top of the book, I glanced across at the new girl named Rochelle. She only joined our class at the beginning of the week. It must be hard starting a new school in the middle of the year.
At last, the bell went for the end of the day. I spotted Rochelle running towards a tall woman who must be her mum. Then I saw a surprising thing. Rochelle’s mum was waving her arms round and making shapes with her fingers, and Rochelle was doing the same with hers. It was like they were talking to each other with their hands. Oh, could her mother be deaf My mind was filled with questions.
The next day, I was reading this week’s words when I felt a tap (轻拍) on my shoulder. I looked up and Rochelle was standing in front of me. “Shall we test each other ” she asked, pointing to my spelling book.
“Yes, of course,” I replied. But I was still wondering how to ask the questions that had been tumbling (翻腾) around in my head since yesterday.
“So, um, that hand thing you did with your mum…”
“Signing.”
“Yeah, signing. Is it because she’s, um, deaf ”
“Yes, both my parents are deaf, so I communicate with them through sign.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. That must be really difficult.” I could tell by the frown on Rochelle’s face that I’d said something wrong, but I didn’t know what. “So, did your parents need someone to help them look after you when you were a baby ”
“Of course not” Rochelle got annoyed. “Why would being deaf mean they can’t look after me Being deaf doesn’t mean they’re stupid,” she was almost shouting. “In fact, they’re much cleverer than most people I know.” Hearing that, I got bet all over. I didn’t say her parents were stupid. But before I could explain, the bell went and she strode (阔步行走) out of the classroom. 【答案】范文
After school, I saw Rochelle and her mother moving their hands quickly. Up and down, their hands moved in the air with fluent changes and occasionally, her mother would gesture towards her mouth and ears. A little far though I stood from them, I could keenly sense Rochelle’s agitation while her mother was wearing a tender smile. Guilty and curious, I halted my steps to spot carefully while wondering, “Are they talking about my impolite question ” Before I could find an answer, Rochelle glanced around as if seeking something. In that moment, our gazes locked.
All of a sudden, Rochelle was coming over to me, with her eyes watery and red. As she stood before me, her voice was sincere, “Mom signed to me that you meant no harm but only curiosity and concerns. I need to say sorry to you.” “Never mind, Rochelle. It’s I who should apologize for my impolite assumption. And, thank you and your mother, for your kindness.” I replied while feeling a warm gaze fall on me-it was from Rochelle’s mother, the tall woman, who, with her wisdom, helped unravel our misunderstanding. It was a life lesson that I should never judge others solely by their actions and appearance because prejudice is a poison that hurts the very foundations of equality and mutual respect, values that should always prevail among humanity.

W: Yeah, but even though she was married to him, she is independent and she didn’t always share his opinions. (14)
M: Really
W: Yeah. She spoke up for the poor and minorities. In fact, she has a great record of human rights achievements. President Truman once called her the “First Lady of the World”.
M: How long does your report have to be (15)
W: It has to be ten pages long, (15) but I already have twenty pages of notes!
M: Well, you should probably figure out what major points you want to make and then only include evidence about them. (16) It’ll be too much to include everything from her life.
W: Yeah. That’s good advice… Hey, by the way, can I use your computer to write it (17)
M: Of course. But I lent it to my roommate earlier. I think he’ll be done using it soon. I’ll go to his room and get it, and then bring it to your apartment, OK (17)
W: Thanks. I really appreciate it!
Text 10
A man woke up one day and surveyed his lands. “I need to buy another horse to help with the harvest,” (18) he said to himself. And so the man set out for the market. He looked long and hard at the animals offered for sale before finally making an agreement with the owner of an expensive horse. The man would buy the horse on one condition: the owner had
to allow the man to try out the animal before paying the money. The owner was puzzled. He had never heard of such a deal before, but he agreed to the man’s request. (19) The man walked the horse home and put him in the straw yard with his other horses. He watched the animals to see how they would behave. Almost immediately, the new animal left the others and joined the laziest, fattest, and sleepiest-looking horse under the shade of a large tree. Seeing this, the man quickly led the horse back to the market. He gave the horse back to the owner and refused to buy it. (20)

【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中Grandpa always had a unique view on things. On this particular occasion, my sister and I were making bets as to who could finish our ice cream first. With a smile, Grandpa said, “Why would you want to finish first If you eat slowly, it will last longer. You should have a competition to see who can finish last.”
What my grandpa taught me that day was really that if you take the opportunity to enjoy what’s in front of you, the pleasure will last longer and be more rewarding than if you rush through life always trying to get the next treat.
